peaking in tongues, also known as glossolalia, is an activity or practice in which people utter words or speech-like sounds, often thought by believers to be languages unknown to the speaker. One definition used by linguists is the fluid vocalizing of speech-like syllables that lack any readily comprehendible meaning. In some cases, as part of religious practice, some believe it to be a divine language unknown to the speaker. Glossolalia is practiced in Pentecostal and charismatic Christianity, as well as in other religions. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/maranatha-ministries/support

Did Paul say Christians shouldn't speak in tongues during church services? Some critics of Pentecostalism make this claim, citing 1 Corinthians 14:23. Dr. David K. Bernard responds to this assertion with a biblical defense of speaking in tongues during corporate worship. If you enjoy this podcast, leave a five-star rating and a review on iTunes or your preferred podcast platform. Though Dale is known as the long-time drummer for Washington sludge-metal band Melvins ('88-present), he's also a guitarist and singer who led the band Altamont though four alternative rock albums ('97-'05) and has now released his third full-length, stylistically varied solo album. We discuss "I Quit" from Glossolalia (2024), "Bad Move" from The Fickle Finger of Fate (2017), and "The Bit" by Melvins from Stag (1996). End song: "El Stupido" by Altamont from The Monkees' Uncle (2005). Intro: "Spread Eagle Beagle" by Melvins from Houdini (1993). More at dalecrover.com. Hear more Nakedly Examined Music. This week we're discussing Glossolalia, the latest solo album by Melvins drummer Dale Crover. Not only that, but he was kind enough to do an interview with us talking all about it, as well as tons of other great insights. While known primarily as a drummer, Crover is actually quite the songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. Oriana Fox interviews artist Chinasa Vivian Ezugha about her recent projects and the role her early work and upbringing in Nigeria have played in encouraging her political voice. Fittingly, she is currently developing an ambitious, multidisciplinary project speaking out against the use of food scarcity as a weapon of war; and is culminating her practical and doctoral research on glossolalia. Importantly, she also discusses her tenure as co-director of the Live Art Development Agency in London and the lessons she gleaned about creating safe spaces and the personal boundaries required to enable them. Chinasa Vivian Ezugha is a Nigerian-born, British performance artist, scholar and PhD candidate at University of Exeter, United Kingdom. Currently, she is the Assistant Professor of Live Art/Art as Social Practice at New York University, Abu Dhabi. Her current research focuses on the voice of glossolalia and aims to expand this vocal practice beyond the walls of a church. Speaking in tongues, or glossolalia, is a spiritual phenomenon rooted in the New Testament, where believers speak in languages unknown to them through the Holy Spirit. The Apostle Paul distinguishes between two types: tongues as a sign for unbelievers and tongues for personal edification. Historically, this practice was present in the early church, mentioned by figures like Irenaeus and Tertullian, but declined by the fourth century. It experienced a resurgence in the 20th century with the Pentecostal and Charismatic movements, notably at the Azusa Street Revival. Paul's teachings emphasize the importance of love and orderly worship, advocating for interpretation in congregational settings to edify the church. #swindonchurch #brendonnaicker #swindon #churches #tongues #glossolalia #azuzastreet #HolySpirit

Christianity is grounded in God's revelation, and so in theology, and so in doctrine. But Christianity is not mere doctrine. It is a life, a life that can be felt and experienced. J. Rodman Williams was a Presbyterian theologian who experienced the profound presence of God's Spirit. He articulated what that meant for believers. I explain the whats and the whys of speaking in tongues (glossolalia) from the New Testament and for our twenty-first century context. Moreover, I explain why I pray in tongues. Along the way I also ask, "is Tik Tok the devil?" Why is our government seeking to ban Tik Tok? We also probe NYC's having installed the National Guard down in their subway system; what is going on with that? Oh, and did you see the State of the Union address? What kinds of things did we learn through that speech? Join me in this episode and examine all of reality, reality which falls under the Lordship of Christ.

Glossolalia is a noun that refers to the practice of speaking in an unknown language. Our word of the day comes from two Greek words: glossa (GLOSS uh) for ‘language' and ‘lalia'(la lee AH) which means ‘speech.' It's been part of the English language since the late 19th century and is sometimes used in a religious context to describe the practice of ‘speaking in tongues.' Here's an example of glossolalia in use: Ted was so upset, he couldn't string together a coherent sentence. All that mumbling and bumbling seemed to resemble some strange form of glossolalia.
We discuss speaking in tongues. Is there a place for it in public worship? Or should it only be exercised in the privacy of your own home? Also we have more on retreats, a lot of love for the Song of the Chiffchaff, and we ask why there aren't any global conferences for people who put the chairs out. Some modern translations, including the New International Version, include the following note after Mark 16:8: “The earliest manuscripts and some other ancient witnesses do not have verses 9–20.” A similar insertion is found at the end of John 7. It reads, “The earliest manuscripts and many other ancient witnesses do not have John 7:53—8:11. A few manuscripts include these verses, wholly or in part, after John 7:36, John 21:25, Luke 21:38 or Luke 24:53.” Considering this, should Mark 16:9-20 and John 7:53-8:11 be included in our Bibles? Dr. David K. Bernard explains the reasons why some modern translations include these textual notes, and why we can trust the authenticity of both Mark 16:9-20 and John 7:53-8:11.For a more detailed discussion of this topic, see Dr. Bernard's book God's Infallible Word, available at PentecostalPublishing.com.If you enjoy this podcast, leave a rating and a review on iTunes or your preferred podcast platform. Luther Wissa is a lifelong practitioner of glossolalia, an American businessman, and author. He first started speaking in tongues at age 11, while attending a retreat in his birthplace of Egypt. Wissa describes glossolalia as a kind of meditation that anyone can practice, regardless of their religious beliefs or metaphysical commitments. The conversation ranges over esoteric spiritual practices, evolutionary explanations for glossolalia, and how accessing an alternative state of consciousness helped Wissa write his first book, "The Race: What's Wrong With Capitalism and How to Fix It".
Speaking in tongues, also known as glossolalia, has long been a subject of curiosity as well as vigorous theological debate. A worldwide phenomenon that spans multiple Christian traditions, glossolalia is both celebrated as a supernatural gift and condemned as semiotic alchemy. For some it is mystical speech that exceeds what words can do, and for others it is mere gibberish, empty of meaning. At the heart of these differences is glossolalia's puzzling relationship to language. Glossolalia and the Problem of Language (U Chicago Press, 2021) investigates speaking in tongues in South Korea, where it is practiced widely across denominations and congregations. Nicholas Harkness shows how the popularity of glossolalia in Korea lies at the intersection of numerous, often competing social forces, interwoven religious legacies, and spiritual desires that have been amplified by Christianity's massive institutionalization. As evangelicalism continues to spread worldwide, Glossolalia and the Problem of Language analyzes one of its most enigmatic practices while marking a major advancement in our understanding of the power of language and its limits. One of the things I love about this podcast is the variety of filmmakers I can find. Low-budget filmmaking is a diverse topic ranging from people just running and gunning, to folks running kickstarters to just get that extra little bit of cash to help bring their vision to life. I've talked to filmmakers who have been doing this half their lives and people just starting out. This week, I had the pleasure to chat with Justin Rodriguez, a Texas based filmmaker who is early on in his career, but has a vision and eye for what he's doing that captured my imagination. We talked about the importance of forming a community, finding a rawness in your process, working with new people on every project, and kinds of art we surround ourselves with. If you like this episode, make sure to go check out Justin's film GLOSSOLALIA on Amazon Prime and follow Justin as he continues to make movies in 2021. Cheers,Josh
The Crowd on the day of Pentecost were perplexed when they heard the 120 (Spirit Filled) Disciples praising God in the Languages of the foreigners visiting in Jerusalem for the feast. Holy Spirit had not only filled the town with the sound of a Hurricane or Tornado, Sent Tongues of Fire from heaven upon the believers in the upper room, but now He had given them the foreign languages of men and Angels with which to glorify and worship Jesus. The promise of the Father that Jesus had told His disciples about, would be poured out on those who waited and tarried until they would receive the Holy Spirit into their lives in Pentecostal Fulness. Jesus had told them that the Spirit that had empowered them to witness and serve the King, would not only be "with" them, but would be "in" them. There was definitely an outpouring of the Holy Spirit that John said Jesus would bring upon all who believed. This outward (with) baptism/anointing, would come into them and "fill" them with His Presence. From that moment on, the Pentecostal Experience would no longer be called just an anointing or Baptism, but would be referred to as the Infilling of the Holy Spirit. 33 years after this day of Pentecostal outpouring, Paul would ask the Christians in Ephesus if they had RECEIVED (in not on) the Holy Spirit since they believed. Their answer was that they had not even heard about the Holy Spirit. However we know that they could not have even been saved unless the Holy Spirit had baptized them into the body of Christ (I Corinthians 12:13). The anointing of the Holy Spirit, the "with" of the Holy Spirit, the baptism of the Holy Spirit is present for every one who comes into the body of Christ. However the Holy Spirit that was "With" them had not come "into" them until Paul explained, laid hands on them and they were "received" and were "filled" with the Spirit and began to speak with Other Tongues just as on the day of Pentecost, just as had happened in Samaria, when Simon the sorcerer tried to buy this Matter/"Logos" (speaking in other tongues) that was evidenced when the believers were filled, or just as it was in Cornelius' home when the disciples heard them all speaking in tongues as Peter preached about Jesus. In every case in Acts, when believers were baptized or anointed with Holy Spirit and they "received/ were filled" with the Spirit, they all spoke with Tongues as the Spirit gave them the utterance. This sermon is a celebration of this initial gift of Glossolalia (praying, worshiping, singing, speaking in tongues). Why does this seemingly strange gift hold such importance and how do we receive or become filled with Holy Spirit?
