Federal Tech Podcast: Listen and learn how successful companies get federal contracts
Connect to John Gilroy on LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/john-gilroy/ Want to listen to other episodes? www.Federaltechpodcast.com Many people deceive themselves when moving systems to the cloud, thinking the same precautions used for an on-premises system can be used in the cloud. Neil Carpenter from Orca Security dispels that notion right out of the box. He details that when a system is moved to the cloud, it operates under a shared responsibility model. While the Cloud Service Provider may be able to serve a solid infrastructure, that does not mean the applications and data are protected as well. Further, the popularity of virtual systems means that workloads can spin up and down rapidly. This means a one-time scan is just that: a photograph of a moment; only continuous monitoring can provide the reassurance that federal systems managers demand. While we know that cloud systems can scale rapidly, many do not understand that scaling also widens the attack surface. Michael Hylton from Orca Security recommends investing in a system that can provide continuous scanning in a dynamic environment. How is this accomplished? During the interview, Neil Carpenter defines agent vs. agent-less systems. When Orca Security established an agent-less system, it allows them to scan, speeding deployment and reducing the risk of coverage gaps.

Many companies are adopting cloud computing technology, and cloud-based services have been predominantly enriching in recent years. Small and medium-sized businesses actively use cloud solutions instead of maintaining heavy infrastructure. But maintaining cloud security is a shared responsibility between the organization and the Cloud Service Provider. Cloud Security Best Practices
Cloud Service Providers have no problem sharing with you the number of data centers they own, the flexibility of options, and the ease to start in the cloud. However, what is never overtly stated is that the federal technology manager is responsible for the security of their data if it is on the server down the hall or in the cloud. The conversational phrase is, “they are not on the hook for the security of your data.” Today, we have several perspectives on understanding how to protect federal data in the cloud. Experts from three areas provide their views on data protection, standards, and working in a cloud environment. When it comes to protecting data in the cloud, Skip Bailey from the U.S. Census Bureau thinks that one needs to approach it strategically first. Each of the three main Cloud Service Providers has proprietary ways of handling aspects of data control. If you think you are going into a multiple cloud environment and plan or relying on one set of rules, you are mistaken. You will need staffing to support these multiple clouds. As in other endeavors, standards bodies can provide guidance that can assist in coming to terms with handling heterogeneous environments, in this case, varying cloud providers. Craig Hurter from the State of Colorado suggests that one should get comfortable with ISO specifications like the ISO 17789 as well as some of the general guidelines from the Cloud Security Alliance. That way, you can compare the terms of service for each Cloud Service Provider with whatever standards you choose. It seems likely that a multi-cloud world is where federal data lives. If that is the case, then it would behoove managers to be able to evaluate each Cloud Service Provider's capabilities. Each cloud may have options to allow control, the key is to understand how those cloud provider's proprietary offerings compare to commercial ones. Sterling Wilson suggests that you start with three questions. What happens if you delete data. How easy is it to deploy Multi-Factor Authentication? What about the security of data in transit? One concept that Craig Hurter brings up is the idea of architecting data storage in depth. The idea is that the initial system is solid, but, over time, something called “drift” takes place. Updates may not all be installed promptly; other maintenance can be delayed. What may happen is you can lose security over time, while still holding to the initial design specifications. You may have “drifted” without knowing it.

https://go.dok.community/slack https://dok.community/ ABSTRACT OF THE TALK There is confusion amongst Kubernetes users as to when you should make a Deployment with a PVC and when you should use a StatefulSet with a PVC. There is also a general lack of understanding when it comes to disk access policies, what RWO/RWX mean and what they allow you to do. These concepts are complicated and require a deep level of understanding in order to avoid users making bad decisions that they come to regret later. In this talk we will explore when you should use each type and what things you need to think about before making a decision. We'll also explore in detail how to safely deploy a multi-replica application with persistence using Portainer. As part of the talk we will explore disk access policy, understand what RWO really is and how RWX disk access changes the equation in regards to persistence. TAKE-AWAYS From this talk delegates will learn the difference between persistent disk and StatefulSet. They will learn when to use each (and when not to) and what are the pitfalls they should be aware of when deploying multi replica apps. They will also learn what is disk access policy, what is RWO and how RWX disk access changes the equation in regards to persistence BIO Neil is the CEO and Co-Founder of Portainer.io, based in Auckland New Zealand. Neil is a career consultant, having spent 25 years in the roles of systems engineering, IT consulting, and more recently IT management. Neil started his career with 12 years at IBM as his foundation, where he had a leading role in Server, Storage, and Virtualisation systems engineering. Neil moved from IBM into self-employment with two business partners, who together created one of NZ's (and later ASEANs) leading VMware consulting practices, ViFX. During this time, Neil was based in Singapore, and was responsible for the design and deployment of the largest and most complex VMware deployments in Asia Pacific. This experience saw Neil consulting to CIOs, CISO's and CTO's all over the region, picking up a vast array of intelligence on what these senior IT leaders expect from a product before it can obtain widespread adoption in their organisations. Neil then moved into a CEO role at a start-up Cloud Service Provider, whereby he grew that business from nothing to $8M ARR in just 2 years. Neil's exposure to Docker technologies came 4 years ago, when at the helm of the Cloud Service Provider, he wanted to bring a “Containers as a Service” offering to market (well before many of the hyper-scales had such offerings). Neil attempted to find self-service portals that could be deployed by the service provider as a way to help his customers consume the service, but there were none available, so Neil had Portainer built. Portainer has now grown into an entity of its own right, and using Neil's knowledge of the CIO's requirements, knowledge of the technology, and knowledge of infrastructure management, Neil has crafted Portainer into a strong contender in the Container management space. Neil now runs the Portainer.io business, and is responsible for the overall product strategy and the team entrusted to deliver on that strategy.

Cloud migration is challenging, cumbersome, and risky for traditional organizations relying on in-house custom-built systems to support achieving revenue from years on years. Today I will be discussing a wide variety of challenges organizations are facing while planning for cloud migration. These typical challenges are talks of every board room and the agenda of the meetings. However, there is no doubt that workloads migration to the cloud is helping organizations to reduce operating costs and build integrated, automated IT infrastructure. Some Facts on Public Cloud: The global public cloud computing market is continuing to grow, and according to the Statista report of August 4, 2021, it will $482 billion in 2022. IDG's 2020 Cloud Computing study reveals that 92% of the organizations are somewhat in the cloud. According to the worldwide enterprise cloud strategy 2017-2020 report by Statista, 82% of the respondent reported that they had deployed hybrid cloud strategy in their organizations. Gartner's global forecast for public cloud end-user spending will grow 23.1% in 2021 to reach $332.3 billion, compares to $270 billion in 2020. (read diagram/table for podcast) Canalys report for the year 2020 that “total cloud infrastructure services spending grew 33% to US$142 billion, up from US$107 billion in 2019.” IDC's report on global public cloud services $312 Billion in 2020 Cloud computing market report published by marketsandmarkets “The global cloud computing market size is expected to grow from USD 371.4 billion in 2020 to USD 832.1 billion by 2025” Share of corporate data stored in the cloud in organizations worldwide from 2015 to 2021 “As of 2021, around 50 percent of all corporate data is stored in the cloud. This share reached 30 percent in 2015 and has continued to grow as companies increasingly shift their resources into cloud environments in the hope of improving security and reliability next to advancing business agility.“ How to Secure and optimize your cloud migration You have a daunting task in hand to migrate to the cloud and do it securely and efficiently. If it is not fully optimized and performed correctly, your dream of digital transformation in an organization can hit roadblocks/pitfalls. Now I will share some of the common challenges which I see the cloud migrations; these are based on observation, reading a wide array of articles, and discussion with fellow IT friends/colleagues in the extended & broader community of IT professionals. What I will be doing is to mention all the typical challenges, and then I will also try to share the perspective of how you can overcome or what could be the strategy to address them. These could be starting from which workloads to be moved to what should be the order of migration to how we will have reliability and performance of business-critical services on the cloud. How I will implement required levels of security controls and regulatory compliance to who is my cloud vendor and this cloud migration must not disrupt my existing IT services, so on… Gartner, in an article published, has beautifully categorized into six ways of cloud migrations challenge You'll Learn: Common Cloud Migration Challenges and How to Overcome Them: Why cloud migration is challenging? For more than a decade, agencies have heard from both industry and federal experts that one of the best things about commercial cloud services is that you can "pay by the drink." Like electricity, you only pay for what you consume. More than a decade after the Cloud First policy, that consumption based model is still difficult to achieve for most agencies. In his weekly Reporter's Notebook, executive editor Jason Miller has exclusive details about why buying cloud services off the GSA schedule may finally meet the long-held goal of paying only for what you use.

The Federal Risk Authorization Management Program, gold old FedRAMP is one of those initiatives that agencies, contractors and lawmakers love to hate. Knowing that, the FedRAMP program management office also is the envy of many other federal programs for its ability to listen, learn and evolve. In his weekly feature, the Reporter's Notebook, executive editor Jason Miller writes about FedRAMP's latest evolution, which was sparked by last summer's ideation challenge. Jason joined the Federal Drive with Tom Temin to discuss.
Though many companies have short-term needs or a current project in mind when selecting a vendor, the long-term viability of the cloud service provider (CSP) cannot be overlooked. While the CSP selected a few years ago may have been an economical or strategic decision at the time, that same CSP could be a challenge to integrate into your future environment and ultimately be a burden.
For SlashCloud Podcast No. 3 of the SlashCloud Podcast, following the shock shutdown of Nirvanix late last year, Gartner predicted that in 2014 one in four cloud service providers would go out of business or be consolidated. The implications of that prediction are huge for SMB/SME's trying to navigate the cloudosphere who are just trying to help add some intelligence to how they go about their day-to-day business.
