In addition to covering the importance of estate planning, our conversation explores the influence of our ancestors and the process of living true to our passions, preferences and mission. In the four year's since George Floyd's murder we've seen some progress in how policing is done in the United States. The issues underlying the disparate treatment of Black men by police are complex and entrenched. This episode is a newly edited reworking of prior episodes that focused on various guests responses to questions related to experiences with law enforcement. Many brothers have shared positive stories. They are not all negative just as all police are not racist. However the stories compiled in this episode are meant to shine a light on the excessive pattern of stopping Black men. There are two positive stories at the end.

Every 365 Brothers interview includes stories of the variety of experiences Black men have with police. While there are definitely tales of the full range of experiences with law enforcement--positive, negative, funny and otherwise--the pervasiveness of the harms that come with structural bias, racial profiling and excessive force prevail. Perhaps we need to change the language. Excessive force is being roughed up. Why isn't killing a man without trial or sentencing a "lynching by state actors?" Language matters! In the hospital recovering from surgery, Leroy Mitchell was depressed and without purpose. The NFL was the long game. There was no back-up plan that interested him. Fortunately the well-timed gift of a Bell Hooks' book from his mentor changed his life. It offered a new way to view his life, his maleness, his future. The conversation on colonial masculinity has opened up my eyes to how much it defines our view of our gender roles, regardless of our sexual identity. Powerful conversation. After Greg Hall, M.D. started volunteering in his community, he was tapped by the Governor's office to join the Ohio Committee on Minority Health. That was the beginning of his growing expertise on the health disparities between African-Americans and other racial groups. Reading research study after research study, he noticed a correlation between the nutritional deficits most common among African-Americans and the diseases that have the most devastating impacts on Black life expectancy. His research lead to the creation of Sequence Multi-Vitamins specifically designed to enhance African-American health. His book, Patient-Centered Care for African-Americans is a trailblazer in providing guidance to doctors, medical school students and hospital residents. A second edition is already being prepared. Most recently, Dr. Hall was named Medical Director of University Hospital's Cutler Center for Men and will oversee a multidisciplinary approach to improving all men's health. Raised in Temple Hills, Maryland, just outside of Washington, D.C, a young Eric Archer frequently visited the Smithsonian museums. He fondly remembers standing underneath an iconic (now defunct) whale exhibit at the Museum of Natural History. It left quite an impression. He's now a Marine Biologist based in San Diego where he researches whale family genetics and taxonomy. He also loved visiting the Nation Air and Space Museum. Yep, he's also a pilot. And a 3rd Degree Black Belt. And plays bass. A few of his other hobbies include sailing, kayaking, scuba diving, woodworking, camping and hiking. He also drops a few jokes here and there, so maybe comedian is his next opportunity to test the limits of mastery. Favorite song: Woman in Chains by Tears for Fears. The lifespan of a dollar in the Black community is about six hours. Melvin Graham is committed to extending that time and to the economic empowerment of Black businesses and the Black community. His media production company is set to release the Black Business Los Angeles series documenting LA's Black business scene on Amazon Prime this September. This is no surprise since his favorite books are Alex Haley's The Autobiography of Malcolm X and PowerNomics by Claud Anderson. Corey Ponder enjoyed policy and politics as a subject, but when terrorist bombs went off near his London classroom while studying abroad, he formally switched majors and left his pre-med courses and M.D. plans behind. He hasn't looked back. After holding multiple positions as a Security Analyst with the CIA, including as a quantitative methodologist and Liaison Officer, he left government service for the corporate world. As noted, he's worked at Google, Facebook and Meta Platforms, including a stint in Facebook's Privacy Program Management. In addition to working with Silicon Valley heavyweights, he also owns and runs his own social impact company, em|PACT, helping organizations build inclusive communities by prioritizing empathy as a skillset.
