This episode begins a two-part series where we dig into the shows at the Borgata in Atlantic City from 2005. These shows were unique for the band because of the small venue size holding a little over 2,500 people, but also due to the general admission area which was something that they had not done very often since the Roskilde tragedy in 2000. After a year of touring in Canada and testing out new songs and setlists on the road, this show has it's fair share of surprises and rarities for the time. Recently we saw Porch get played as the second song in Wrigley Field, and we'll get to talk about that when it comes to this show. Songs like Sad, Low Light and Man Of The Hour are in their early infancy, so we'll chat about how those songs were continuing to evolve at the time into the big performances that we're familiar with today. We'll dive into excellent versions of Save You, Crazy Mary and Rearviewmirror as well. Javier joins in on this episode and will talk about some of the different things you're hearing at these shows including Cameron playing with an open snare and Mike's guitar featured behind in the mix. And we'll talk about our favorite performances of Dark Matter songs from this tour! When proposing an episode for this week's show, the goal was to put focus on a tour that we haven't discussed a whole lot on this podcast - the 2011 Canadian tour. The question here was which show would be the one to cover. So we crowd sourced it and got some great answers, but the best answer was a suggestion to do the episode in tribute of former Calgary Flames star, Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew, who were tragically killed recently. This made the Calgary 2011 show a no brainer to talk about. There is a big storyline that looms over this show. This happened to be the same day that R.E.M. called it a career. Hearing the band react to the news and play a very impassioned touching tribute to them with the song It Happened Today has been the consensus call back moment from this show. Pearl Jam could have made a decision to play one of their more well known radio singles like Losing My Religion, Everybody Hurts or Man On The Moon, but we'll talk about how they selected the right song for the right moment. There are also songs in this setlist that connect to something that the band has done recently such as Brain Of J, Rats, Crazy Mary and even something relevant in concerns to Johnny Guitar! The Dark Matter tour keeps trucking along as we now have four shows under our belt and are looking forward to a big weekend in Las Vegas where anything can happen! To get you even more excited for that, this week's episode goes back to the Vegas show during the mighty 2003 Riot Act tour! Coming off of an absolutely legendary performance for their 10th anniversary show in 2000, this crowd came in with a ton of excitement and never let down all night. This show will feature two guests who are vital to the existence of Pearl Jam - Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart. They'll join the band for a fun rendition of Rockin' In The Free World, but before that we'll get into a conversation about why if it wasn't for Nancy, Pearl Jam may not have been able to fund Ten following the death of Andy Wood. It's a story that doesn't get told often and it never got a mention in PJ20, but we'll share how it all went down for you here in the episode. This show should be recognized as a Mike McCready explosion! Mike was on fire the entire night putting on a clinic during such songs as Even Flow, Go, Love Boat Captain, Breath, Crazy Mary, Fuckin' Up and that just scratches the surface. Javier will join us for two segments to gush over the tone of Even Flow and Crazy Mary for this one! As we continue our ode to the 30 years of the Vs. tour this November, we're stopping at a show that's known for both what happened during the concert, and then what happened in the aftermath. The show is an unforgettable night from this tour highlighted by a very early rendition of Crazy Mary in which original songwriter, Victoria Williams, joins them to play guitar and sing, and long-time Pearl Jam producer, Brendan O'Brien, is called upon to play the B3. It's a moment that's etched in history, but perhaps gets overshadowed by the events that took place the following night. After a dispute with a fan in a New Orleans bar, Eddie Vedder was arrested for public drunkenness and disturbing the peace after spitting in the man's face. We'll take the early portion of the episode to discuss about the incident as we'll invite the 1993 American League Cy Young award winner, Jack McDowell, onto the show, who was there during the occurrence. We'll talk to Jack about his relationship with Eddie and how they met through their ex-wives, how Pearl Jam got his band V.I.E.W. bumped off a gig at CBGB's, how he and Ed convinced TV reporters that Ed was a White Sox call-up, and of course the New Orleans situation. Get to hear what he thought of the whole ordeal and how his night ended up after getting into it with the friend of the agitator that Ed had to deal with. There was only so much time that we had to share of his interview in this episode, but check out Patreon this week for the director's cut of the interview featuring stories about his band's V.I.E.W. and stickfigure, Pearl Jam's relationship with baseball and his current frustrations with baseball analytics that he likes to write songs about. As for the show, there are excellent performances that we'll get to dig into from Why Go, Footsteps, Porch, Rats, Blood and of course, Crazy Mary. We'll also discuss Release being an OTOTO Daughter tag and a wild sequence that featured Ed singing lyrics from Michael Jackson song "Ben" into a fierce, unrelenting rendition of Blood. Our Gear Guru segments this week will focus on some of the slide guitar features of Rats, and of course, the contrast of this version of Crazy Mary compared to what we know of it now. It had a female supervisor and a lower level male manager. This was a lab for physicians to send in sick patient specimens to try and find out what's wrong with them. Males would come in, do their job, and go home. Some of the females were like evil children who had no regard for patients' health. Their behavior was borderline criminal. The female who I shared the work with would grab the smaller workload and then spend four hours of an eight hour shift in the breakroom talking. After I had been working the entire shift, she would try to time it so we sat down to enter results at the same time and then would ask me to help her with her typing. I wouldn't help her and started doing my work in random order so she couldn't tell how much I had left. This pissed her off. I've noticed it's a common female tactic where they'll accuse others of whatever they themselves are doing. She told the male manager I wasn't doing my share of the work. She didn't think it far enough ahead that he could just pull up the productivity reports. He told her I was doing eight times the amount of work as her. The Consequences for her? None. I changed shifts and it got worse. One girl didn't like another who was always bragging about the new clothes she bought. She hid all the patient specimens the girl was working on. The female supervisor was going to let it go but the male medical director who was over everything heard about it. He told the supervisor “Either she gets fired or you get fired”. Another time two girls were caught running a scam. They would collect money from everyone to buy lunch. They would then buy a bunch of cheap pizzas and use the rest to go to an expensive restaurant. When work would provide food they got caught stealing that food. I overheard one girl giving another tips about getting pregnant and riding the government gravy train for life. She herself was going to have her tubes untied so she could get pregnant again and get more government money. We suspected one woman had Munchausen By Proxy and was making her kid sick to get attention. We suspected that she was taking bacteria specimens home and infecting her kid because he kept coming down with weird infections in places they don't usually show up. She was trying to have another kid but was too overweight so she got her stomach stapled in order to lose weight but burst the staples eating an entire bucket of KFC. There was an older woman who we called Crazy Mary after the song. Besides stealing people's lunches, she was caught pretending to work but wasn't doing anything with her patient specimens. She was constantly telling the male manager that somebody else wasn't doing their work when it was her. She finally got fired because she let a positive meningitis test for an infant sit around all weekend without calling the physician. A positive meningitis test requires a physician call because of its high potential for being fatal. Especially with an infant." The City Of Brotherly Love has been home to countless legendary Pearl Jam shows and moments throughout their history. As a matter of fact, the night after this show was the show in which they they played the album Ten in full. Which makes some people forget about night 1 from 2016 due to the magnitude of the Ten banner being raised. But what good are we if we can't give every great show a spotlight on this podcast? Because there is no reason why this one shouldn't be discussed as an all-time classic show, and we're here to prove that. With the knowledge of the album getting a run, this show was constructed so that Philly people would get to see some rarities, including three that haven't been played since that date - Gonna See My Friend, In The Moonlight and Education. But it didn't matter what they played, because the crowd was on fire the entire night. Right from the top when opening up with Once (including the Master/Slave intro that they would of course repeat again the following night), you knew that the crowd was going to make this a night to remember. We'll go in depth on Love Boat Captain, In My Tree, Jeremy, Crown Of Thorns and Crazy Mary where the crowd is at the top of their game. Also, how about a concert wedding up in Suite 225? This episode's question of the week is based off of the rare songs that we'll talk about. We came up with a system for scoring your rarest songs you've seen, and we'll calculate the numbers and share them with you! On that note, our Gear Guru, Javier, tackles a different approach to rare songs and discusses what the musical reason for not playing them is. It's been quite a long time since we've covered something from down in South America, but thankfully we rectify our mistake in this episode. We're going down to São Paulo, Brazil to cover a show from Pearl Jam's first tour in the continent that took place back in 2005. This was a Patreon requested episode from Mike Radtke, and we'll tell his story about how he came across this when collecting official boots and why it's stuck with him ever since. As it goes for shows in Brazil, the crowd is the big highlight. Now the crowd wasn't fully developed into the traditional Brazilian crowds where everybody sings along to the melody of a verse or chorus, but they certainly did their part to stand out. Crazy Mary is a full fledge sing-along, Black has a powerful moment that leaves Ed mesmerized, and during Daughter the crowd takes it open themselves to start an It's OK tag. All of this from the very active crowd, along with an incident dealt with by security during Alive. In our question of the week, we asked our Facebook and Twitter followers how often they go back to South American bootlegs, we run through every answer before taking a dive into the set! Pearl Jam has such a rich history in the city of Boston and it's surrounding parts. Between there, plus Mansfield and Worcester, they've played the area a total of 24 times in their 32 year history. From the famous Ten Club show at The Orpheum in 1994, to the three night stay where they made the attempt to play every song in their catalog at Mansfield in 2003, to more recently when Fenway Park has become the crown jewel venue for them to play, there are a lot of absolute classics to take away from this region. In this episode, we won't be talking about a show that was considered a classic. If there was consideration for one, it would probably be the follow up night 2 show in 2006. But as a night 1 show that didn't have a set topping moment like Leash did the next night, it's easy to misplace it within that massive group previously mentioned. Is it time to get this show back on some people's minds? We invite in our Patron, Joe Ierachi, who requested this show for us to do as an episode. He joins us here to tell his story featuring his memory from what was an unforgettable crowd, being at a show with his sister and friend who has since passed away, and a story about a fantasy football bet and how it pertains to Even Flow! It's Joe's pick, and he'll tell you why night 1 is more meaningful to him than night 2. As mentioned, this crowd had an excellent night. We'll talk about their impact on songs such as Release, Love Boat Captain, Jeremy, Why Go and Crazy Mary. This is also a big night for Mike solos, but Stone has a big moment towards the end of the night as well when an orange shirt gets tossed on stage bearing his name. Is this gonna be a good episode? You're darned tootin! With many Cohn Brothers movie quotes aside, this is our final episode of our OTOTO states month emanating from Fargo, North Dakota in 2003. This is the first instance in 188 official episodes and 224 shows in total that we've covered that we get to talk about Arc. Arc is one of their more fascinating songs due to the weight that it holds being the tribute written for the Roskilde victims. The band would go on to play this nine times, the same number of victims from the tragedy, and none of the official bootlegs include any performance of this. We'll get into the unique presentation that it had live and how impactful it was, even as a show opener, in it's short stay that year. Another big point of conversation from this one is a version of In My Tree being played for the first time in 69 shows. This song having not been played for that long mixed in with an illness from Ed meant it was never going to be as crisp of a version that we would've heard in 1996. This became a little bit of an improv where the lyrics and music weren't exactly linear. Ed has some things on his mind and comes up with some beautiful improved lyrics for the end. We'll talk about how this set the tone for other versions of In My Tree that year, especially the version that everyone remembers from Madison Square Garden.  All this and good discussion on 1/2 Full, I Am Mine, Better Man, Thumbing My Way, Rearviewmirror, I Am A Patriot and Crazy Mary. One of our favorite Pearl Jam years to discuss on this podcast is the 2003 Riot Act tour. So many memorable moments from tons of shows spread across the map. In this episode we head to Alpine Valley where the band last played back in 2000 to freezing cold temperatures appropriately dubbed The Ice Bowl. They return to East Troy, Wisconsin during Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year. In beautiful weather and a great mood, the band plays an inspired show in front of a top notch audience. Deep cuts were heavily infused from the beginning of the main set with songs such as Sometimes, God's Dice, Faithfull, Immortality and Insignificance taking place within the new Riot Act songs while heavy hitters such as Better Man, Jeremy, Even Flow, Daughter and Rearviewmirror all hit in that order to end the set. On top of that, take the last two of that group, both songs from Vs., and add the first four played in the encore - Go, Animal, Elderly Woman and Glorified G and you have an extremely rare instance where six songs are being played off the record right in a row. We also have fun moments from this night, some that get a bit political, some that involve a random fan running out onto the stage during Crazy Mary. But as Ed says in the show, tune in to see 'what American is gonna get a blowjob tonight' We'll also discuss a little bit of the Earthling record as well as a special dedication that happened at the Chicago show Visit the Pearl Jam Concertpedia - http://liveon4legs.com Donate to the Show - http://patreon.com/liveon4legs

Not Boston, but Woostah! This episode hits up an early show from the Lightning Bolt tour in which the band was playing their first of two nights in the Massachusetts town. Most Boston area shows are going to give you something memorable like a special crowd or a deep dive into the back catalog. This show has all of those things. It's a great crowd, and Fatal is played for the first time in years. But with the hosts not having attended this one in person, it is a bit of a struggle to grab onto an overall narrative for this 32-song set. Is it the brand new album songs that the band continues to adjust to on the live stage? Is it the 20-song main set that lasts about a dollar short of 2 hours? Is it Ed being so drunk that he forgets how to spell L-O-I-T-E-R-I-N-G in Crazy Mary? Those are all nice talking points, but when you put everything together, what kind of show are you looking at in hindsight? Don't let that detract you from what this episode has to offer, because although we struggle with pieces of it, we ultimately enjoy this one. If you were to take a guess as to what venue Pearl Jam has frequented the most over the last 30 years, would you think Shoreline Amphitheater is the correct answer? If not, then you're wrong. 17 of the performances in the San Francisco area amphitheater came from the Bridge School benefits, but this episode will happen to cover a show played there in 2003. As of most nights from this era, there are some politically motivated moments seeped into this evening. From a pro-activism speech during Porch to a few references to some of the bay area war protests that happened that February, it's not difficult to see what's on the band's mind. However, it being the second leg of this US run following the Nassau Coliseum incident, things are a lot more composed. As long as people didn't fuck with The (Dixie) Chicks, Ed was in good spirits. Tune into this episode to check out great versions of Long Road, You Are, Daughter, Thumbing My Way, Present Tense, Love Boat Captain and an out of this world Crazy Mary. Hawaii has always had an important place within the history of Pearl Jam. From Ed's love of surfing to discovering and connecting with B3 organist Boom Gaspar, a lot of important moments have developed from the islands and in this episode we'll talk about a 2006 show that acted as the end of an era for one of their most important touring years. To join us on this one is former Live On 4 Legs host Matt Helbig to talk about a few of his go-to songs. This episode is gonna be all about the love for Boom who got a warm hometown welcome on this night. We'll talk about his introduction to the band and how he didn't even know who Ed was before meeting him, but fast forward into the future and Boom has been a sixth-man staple of the live act. We'll get to hear some of the classic Boom songs in this show such as Love Boat Captain, Wasted Reprise and Crazy Mary. We'll also chat about how good of a mood the band was in on this night being able to finish out a monstrous touring year on such a positive note. We get performances closely representing some Hawaiian and beach themes such as Oceans, Big Wave, Ed ukulele song You're True and a cover of Hawaii 78. Berkeley, California's Counting Crows seemed to become overnight sensations with their debut album August and Everything After. Lead man and pianist Adam Duritz and guitarist David Bryson came out of a group called The Himalayans, originally starting as a duet. Over time they formed the group, adding keyboardist Charlie Gillingham, guitarists Dan Vickrey and David Immergluck, bassist Millard Powers, and percussionist Jim Bogios. In a time when grunge was on the ascendancy, the Counting Crows drew inspiration more from Van Morrison and the coffee house than from Kurt Cobain and Seattle. Duritz' lyrics are a powerful draw for the band. Ironically, despite the fame-chasing lyrics of their breakthrough single, "Mr. Jones," Adam Duritz was never very comfortable with the fame that came with the success of the Counting Crows. We hope you enjoy this lyric-rich album. Round HereThe first track on the album describes a man walking away from a home and a woman, only to discover that he is walking away from himself. The lyrics talk about all the things he can now do, but while these freedoms are important to children, they are not very significant to adults.OmahaThis is a deeper cut off the album, and was tried by Duritz in many previous bands before finally feeling like he got it right with this iteration. In April 1994, the city of Omaha, Nebraska designated this song the “official song of the city.”Anna BeginsAnother deep cut, this song was inspired by a relationship Duritz had with an Australian named Anna. The relationship could not survive the geographic distance. “She's talking in her sleep, it's keeping me awake, and Anna begins to toss and turn. And every word is nonsense but I understand, and Oh Lord, I'm not ready for this sort of thing.”Rain KingA big hit off the album, "“I've been here before, and I deserve a little more.” The song was written in 40 minutes after watching the film “Dr. Zhivago.” ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:“The X-Files” by Mark SnowThe long-running science fiction television series featuring Mulder and Skully began in 1993. The truth is out there!STAFF PICKS:“Creep” by RadioheadBrian features the ultra-depressing lyrics of Thom Yorke. The song was inspired by an obsession York had with a stranger. When he confessed his obsession, the result was decidedly not a good one.“I Would Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That)” by Meat LoafBruce features the longest single in history to make it to #1 on the charts, clocking in at 7:58. Meat Loaf won a Grammy for this song from the sequel album to 1977's “Bat out of Hell.”“My Sister” by The Juliana Hatfield ThreeWayne brings an alternative track that was big on the radio, but didn't make it to the charts. It is told from the perspective of a little sister or brother looking up to a big sister, with the love-hate relationship that comes with it.“Crazy Mary” by Pearl JamRob's staff pick was originally a folk song written by guitar player Victoria Williams. Pearl Jam put this cover on a benefit album for Williams after she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Williams sings in the background. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:“Food Innuendo Guy” by Adam SandlerThis song really mashes our potatoes.

Walter Steding(born in Harmony, Pennsylvania) is an American musician and visual artist. Steding made his debut in New York City during the late seventies playing as a one-man band(predominantly as an opening act at CBGB's for bands such as Blondie, Suicide and The Ramones). During the eighties, Steding worked as painting assistant for Andy Warhol, who eventually became his producer. A violinist, Steding first played with The Electric Symphony where he developed his own electronic instruments-namely a synthesizer triggered by a biofeedback device that coordinated his music with light up goggles. He later performed as a soloist at art galleries and eventually at clubs such as CBGBs and Max’s Kansas City. He has worked as a recording artist and performer with Blondie, Jim Carroll, David Byrne, Chic, Robert Fripp and Panther Burns. Steding was eventually dubbed "Doc Steding", the orchestra leader on Glenn O’Brien’s T.V. Party and subsequently, in 1980, he formed his band, Walter Steding and The Dragon People and released records on Red Star and Animal Records. Steding met Warhol at a discotheque on lower Broadway called Infinity. After having spoken with Warhol about his music, Warhol invited Steding to perform at The Factory and he henceforth became friends and painting assistant to Warhol. Andy Warhol later acted as producer for Steding's musical exploits, even producing a music video for his single "Secret Spy" from his 1982 release, Dancing in Heaven. Steding currently lives and works in New York City. He is a successful painter and has written, directed, scored and acted in films and plays including Not Quite Love, Time Capsules, Polyester, Union City, and ''Downtown 81''. He is currently a member of the rock band, Crazy Mary.

On the 21st anniversary of one of the band's most legendary shows at Madison Square Garden, we are back to our year long MSG series taking a look at every show the band performed at the World's Most Famous Arena. Today's episode we cover Night 1 of 2010 - a show that gets overshadowed by the magic of the following night, but in its own right has its memorable moments. Randy was in attendance on this night, and although it was over nine years ago and the memories have faded a bit, there are big moments that still stick out to him as some of his favorite live moments to this day. Most of the moments were courtesy of the red hot crowd that poured their heart and soul into this show. Renditions of Elderly Woman, Once, Crazy Mary and Indifference as the closer have incredible crowd participation, so much so that you can hear the crowd better on the boot than you can Ed. But with all of this show's ups there were also some downs from this night. While the crowd and overall performance of the band was a huge strength, the meaty part of the first set left a little to be desired. They got off to a hot start, but after Even Flow the set lacked a powerful punch and defining moment. As John mentions in the episode, it felt like they randomly chose tracks from different albums and blindly placed them in the set. Lots of topics to cover here for all you set list nerds! This week we tackle Philadelphia 2005, but Matt had to take the week off to learn some disco music so we introduce you to our guest co-host this week Pete Griesbach from the Pearl Jam tribute band Last Exit. Pete attended this show back in 2005 and we'll hear a story in this episode about how he avoided the dreaded Philly parking lot porta potties. This show is a tale of three very different sets. There is the first set - a tight and fast paced killer run with the high point featuring the "man trilogy". Then the first encore takes on the role of the campfire set featuring four performances that were incredibly rare for the time period. And then there is encore two... a mish mosh of collective songs played without a distinct flow with far too many stops in-between songs for that late in the set. Although there's a lot going on here, the most memorable moment of the night belongs to the ghost of Crazy Mary who was so disturbed during this performance that one of the amps busted mid-song. It was a crazy moment that led to the band putting together one of the strongest performances of the song in their history. An incredible collaboration from Mike and Boom brought the song back to life after nearly averting disaster. Through 32 episodes we've covered emotional moments, historical moments, legendary moments. Band defining moments such as the push for Breath at MSG, Immortality with original lyrics at The Orpheum and when the stage shook during Do The Evolution. Throughout all three of these iconic moments, one of us on this podcast shrugged them off and downplayed their impact. I was worried that Matt would never get to break out and enjoy the emotions of a performance instead of critiquing the sound... That is until this episode! We continue our coverage of the MSG series with the second night of 2003, one of the earliest show's that Matt attended. For years and years and years Matt talked about how Crazy Mary was one of the band's best openers, only for the band having ever done it twice. I shrugged him off and called him... Crazy... due to the song being a staple in the encore act. Low and behold we finally get to talk about it and while it has emotional impact for Matt, I find a way to make good logical sense of the decision. Overall the band had to follow a tough act from the night before where they were greeted with special guests and rocked so hard that the stage shook. They put together a great mix of the old and the rare tracks that were uncommon in 2003 such as Deep and Glorified G and spliced in some Riot Act songs that still to this day remain rarities – including Get Right that hasn't been played since that tour. We've been promising a new Patreon episode and we're gonna make good on it! Sometime this weekend our Live At Easy Street episode will finally be released. Hey! Ho! LET'S VOTE! We flashback to 2004 to focus on the first show from the Vote For Change tour that took place in six different swing states prior to the Presidential election. The message on this night was one that can be reiterated in our current political climate - Every. Vote. Matters. While we attempt to stray from our personal beliefs (yet at some points can't hold back), we take the overall message from this time period as a wake up call for today. As for the show, it's an intimate set featuring a total of 10 covers (if you count Last Kiss and Crazy Mary) including some that are no longer in rotation today. On top of that, we discuss the pacing of songs played that night such as Given To Fly and how they've changed up their playing style during current live performances.
