Doing Divorce Different A Podcast Guide to Doing Divorce Differently
In today's episode, we are joined by Stephanie Raffelock, an author on aging well and the creative surge that begins in midlife. Stephanie discusses the awakenings and transformation that come with getting older. We discuss what aging looks like in today's society, where we live in a culture that values youth and beauty. We discuss how re-imagining and awakening go hand in hand with divorce. Stephanie talks about how thinking of doing divorce with an attitude of ‘what's in the next chapter?' will enrich life in ways that couldn't be done before. We close the episode by discussing how all women should tell their stories and how self-knowledge reveals all things. Tune in to learn how to embrace aging, divorce, and how going through something hard in life can change life for the better with some curiosity and gratitude. In this episode: [1:55] What led Stephanie to write books about aging. [4:40] Stephanie discusses how health & vitality are sexy and what opens up for us as we age. [5:55] She discusses the third act of one's life and how rewarding it is. [6:30] Stephanie talks about how her book and thinking can be applied to someone going through a divorce or a life-changing shift. [10:15] Why are people so afraid to age? [12:00] Stephanie's thoughts on empowerment and courage. [14:12] As we get older, how do we fit into this youth-oriented culture? [16:54] Journaling and how/why each woman's story is important. Key Takeaways: Aging is absolutely beautiful, it's the third chapter in life, and this final chapter is where all the incredible transformations happen. Divorce (and other complicated things in life) are an opportunity to restructure your life and awaken to the things you can do now that you were afraid to do while you were married. It's a second chance at life and creating who you are. Use curiosity and gratitude to get through divorce. Have gratitude that you made it this far; you made it through the difficult situation, which means you can make it through anything! What can you learn and see with new eyes? Quotes: “Empowerment is really something that grows up from the center, from the gut, of the woman, I believe, and it's something that needs to be claimed, examined, and understood as not a polite and pretty process but a powerful process.” “When you are healthy, there is a sexiness to it because there is a vitality to it, there's juice to it.” Guest Bio: Stephanie Raffelock is the author of Creatrix Rising, Unlocking the Power of Midlife Women. For Stephanie Raffelock, reinvention runs in the family. After her parents divorced when she was four, she watched her mother constantly reinvent herself as a single woman in the ‘50s, moving across the country every year. At just 17, Raffelock dropped out of school and moved to LA, where the drug-laden culture of the ‘60s and ‘70s led to self-medicating and homelessness. A passion for writing inspired her reinvention and she became a college freshman at 35. But life intervened and it would be three decades before she wrote her first book. In her conversation with CoveyClub founder, Lesley Jane Seymour, Raffelock explains how it's never too late to reinvent–she attended a Buddhist college, interviewed luminaries such as Allen Ginsberg, and ultimately began her publishing career at 63. FREE GIFT! Don't start your reinvention without downloading CoveyClub's starter guide called “31 Badass Tips for Launching Your Reinvention Without Fear!” Bio: Stephanie Raffelock is the author of Creatrix Rising, Unlocking the Power of Midlife Women. Something often happens to women around the age of 45 - we get a sense of something rising. Whether you frame that as "wisdom", or "spiritual awakening" or something else, it's fascinating to explore what it could mean. In this 100th episode of The Midlife Movement Podcast, Jo is talking to author, Stephanie Raffelock, whose latest book, "Creatrix Rising" argues that we need to consign the male-imagined "crone" archetype and replace her with the Creatrix - the power-full, dynamic feminine responsible for a surge in creativity and energy. This is a stage in life when women transform "from quiet strength to a resounding voice". You can buy this fascinating book via Stephanie's website, where you can also find out more about the author, who herself embodies the beautiful spirit of the Creatrix. The Midlife Movement is a friendly community which aims to challenge outdated stereotypes around midlife and ageing through the sharing of stories and 121 personal coaching. Stephanie Raffelock is the author of Creatrix Rising, Unlocking the Power of Midlife Women. She also penned the award-winning book, A Delightful Little Book of Aging A graduate of Naropa University's program in writing and poetics, Stephanie was a contributor to the Rogue Valley Messenger in Oregon. She has blogged for Nexus Magazine, Omaha Lifestyles, Care2.com, as well as SixtyandMe.com A recent transplant to Austin, Texas Stephanie enjoys an active life with her husband, Dean, and their Labrador retriever Mickey Mantle Raffelock. For Stephanie, writing is an encore career! Stephanie is passionate about her work and sees midlife as a bridge from one part of your life to another. What we have seen in society over the years is the message that when you hit midlife, you're done! Stephanie is here to say that this messaging is not true! Not only are women finding their voices, but they are also raising them! This has become her work, to write about women and aging. How we see ourselves as we age and how we get stuck in the stereotypes of aging and how to break free from those stories! We begin by discussing her book, Creatrix Rising! Creatrix comes from the three Greek fates. There was the spinner, the weaver, and the cutter. The weaver was the creatrix. The word means a woman who makes things. Stephanie felt that was a great word for what happens to us in midlife as we move out of the motherhood phase ( whether or not we've had children) We can then move into a phase of creativity. We become women who make things, whether that's leadership, gardening, or cooking. Creatrix is a positive archetype that gives power and empowerment to women at midlife. Stephanie shares one-story in her book about a woman named Austin. Austin lived life to the fullest until the very end. She knew what it was to be a woman who makes things and never stopped. She goes on to share that women need to reassure themselves in life that they grow psychologically and spiritually until the day they die. There is no endpoint! We just need to change the way we talk to ourselves and how we perceive ourselves moving forward. Our discussion continues to focus on the importance of staying curious and having gratitude in our life. Stephanie feels that you grow old the day you stop feeling impassioned by the things you love and what you stand for in life. We discuss a lot about how important mindset is moving forward into this next chapter and how we need to treat ourselves kindly and be careful on how we speak to ourselves! Perhaps look in the mirror each day and tell yourself, “hello gorgeous! You got this! “. What a beautiful way to start the morning! Stephanie's insights on unleashing your Inner Creatrix is going to change the way you look at change - and change forever, the way you see your BEYOND! “We need to revise how we think of aging. The old paradigm was: You're born, you peak at midlife, and then you decline into decrepitude. Looking at aging as ascending a staircase, you gain well being, spirit, soul, wisdom, the ability to be truly intimate and a life with intention.” Jane Fonda Zentangle: https://www.zentangle.com More About Stephanie Raffelock: Stephanie Raffelock is the author of Creatrix Rising, Unlocking the Power of Midlife Women. What is a creatrix, you might ask? According to Stephanie Raffelock the word creatrix is defined as “a woman who makes or creates things.” Stephanie suggests that creatrix may be a good replacement for crone when it comes to selecting an archetype for women to age into. We love the idea of a woman continuing to “make things” beyond the biological clock of fertility. Stephanie Raffelock herself is a creatrix. She is a storyteller and writer who published two books after she was 50. Creatrix Rising is her latest, and we were thrilled to speak with her about it on this week's Twisting the Plot Podcast. Listen as Stephanie shares her story, the plot twists, and the role models who inspired her along the way. There is the poet Richard Blanco, her grandmother Julia, and the magical neighbor Austin. Relationships matter to Stephanie. And now she matters to us. We need to remind ourselves that as with all kinds of evolution, there is no destination point, no complete, all-the-way healing, but rather more unfolding, more work to be done. We grow psychologically and spiritually until the time we die. Stephanie Raffelock, The Creatrix Rising Learn more about Stephanie Raffelock at https://www.byline-stephanie.com/

With all the changes in the role women play in society over the last several decades, new archetypes need to be explored. The traditional archetypes are extremely outdated which is why Stephanie Raffelock has written her latest book, Creatrix Rising. She joins me on Women Worldwide to share her story and inspire women all over the world. In light of the Women's March, #MeToo, and the general shift in the power and purpose women have and play in the world, new ways of looking at the world are emerging. Women no longer, if they ever, identify with the roles of the maiden, mother and crone to describe their life and purpose. More than any other generation, women today are encouraged to share their stories. But how should they go about it? Blast them on social media? Share in small social groups? Create movements? This is what Stephanie is helping women to do. Share their stories in a way that is authentic and helps others to do the same. — Each woman has a unique history that's made up of many small stories. Sharing your chronicles with others is a way of sharing your heart and your soul. It's also the way in which you've been growing into the archetype of the Creatrix. Your narratives are what connect you to other women and to your shared humanity. Every woman I've ever known has a tale to tell that is brave and beautiful, sad and sweet. Knowing your stories and those of women around you can change the way you see the world, and even change the world, as you become the Creatrix.
