Welcome to Gene-ology, where we explore the earliest TV writing works of Gene Roddenberry, the creator of Star Trek! It's a more light-hearted return to the old west as Gene-ology examines Gene Roddenberry's only script for Sam Rolfe's Hotel de Paree series. But can even a comedy script shortchange one of its central characters? Join us as we dig into the Roddenberry archives and discuss how Gene's early writing shaped the groundbreaking worlds he would later bring to our screens. Hosted by Earl Green and Ashley Thomas Guest starring Brendan Berndt as Sundance, and Crystal Allen as Annette Devereaux

Join authors Pam Courtney, Andrea Loney, and Crystal Allen as they discuss one of the most pressing issues of our time: climate change. This impassioned #HFGather will explore the power of storytelling to inspire meaningful change for our future. Through this conversation, we hope to connect ways that children's books can offer a deeper understanding of the interconnectedness between social justice, racial equity, and caring for our planet. Our children are grappling with pollution and climate-related disasters, stories can help them find hope in their world. Our storytellers will share their personal experiences and offer insight into considerations other storytellers may make, especially when it comes to the many ways in which communities of color are disproportionately affected by climate change, and how it is all of our responsibilities to support our children in creating a safe and more equitable planet! The Highlights Foundation is proud to learn from and work alongside Knology to amplify Black Storytellers in STEM. BlackRep4Kids is a National Science Foundation-funded project led by Knology, in collaboration with the Highlights Foundation, the National Black Child Development Institute, and the Association of Children's Museums. The project brings together Black researchers and practitioners from a variety of fields (including climate science, developmental psychology, informal learning, and children's media) to collaboratively develop methods and strategies for creating children's climate media that helps Black families and their children discuss, prepare for, and respond to a multitude of environmental threats.

In 1936, the Clare Booth Luce play The Women debuted on Broadway to rave reviews and packed audiences which featured 45 speaking parts for women, while no man is either seen or heard. (Though all of the husbands are spoken about constantly!) The plot revolves around a group of privileged women who live in New York City and busy themselves with shopping, spa days, and gossip. (60 years before Sex & the City!) Keeping husbands happy unless they “fall in love” with a salesgirl, these women fight for what is theirs.  Back in the day, one could move to Reno, Nevada for six weeks to gain residency and garner a quickie divorce. (Check out the Trashy Divorces podcast to learn all of the old rules for ending matrimony.) Our lead Mary (Mrs. Haines) dearly loves her husband but he is having an affair with a perfume salesgirl, Crystal Allen which means he has to make a choice. Stay with the wife and daughter or remarry ASAP and give his wife a huge settlement.  Off in Reno, Mary and a gaggle of friends and other women meet to gain residency and commiserate in this farcical look at marriage and friendship.  The 1939 film directed by Book Vs Movie alum George Cukor has over 130 speaking parts for women (even the animals were females!) Led by Norma Shearer, Joan Crawford, Rosalind Russell, and Paulette Goddard it happened to come out in an insanely good year for movies (Gone With the Wind, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, The Wizard of Oz, Of Mice and Men to name a few) it did earn any Academy Award nominations--but the film has become a classic along with several Broadway revivals.  So between the original play and the film--which did we prefer? Before she became the first woman television mogul, Lucille Ball was queen of the 'B' pictures in RKO studio. Beauty for the Asking might have a low budget, but it carries a far more subversive message than many prestigious 'A' pictures. Loosely based on the life of Helena Rubenstein, it shows how Lucy moves from beauty operator to a business magnate once she invents a cold cream. Just imagine what The Women (1939) would have been like had Mary Haines and Crystal Allen joined forces and showed Stephen the door. That's what we find here in this little gem.

Crystal Allen and D'Nesh. Enterprise brought back Orion slave girls, which we had not seen since the Original Series in "Whom Gods Destroy." And as Enterprise did with so many things from TOS, this appearance put a very interesting twist on a familiar theme. In the fourth-season episode "Bound" we're introduced to three Orion slave girls, the sisters Navaar, D'Nesh, and Maras. Through their interactions with Archer, the NX-01 crew, and their supposed owner Harrad-Sar, we learn more than we had ever known about these exotic women and their role in Orion society. In this episode of Warp Five we're joined by one of these three sisters—or at least the actress who portrayed her—Crystal Allen, who, as D'Nesh, bent a member of the Enterprise's crew to her will. We talk to Crystal about getting into acting, her pre-acting career as a dancer and model, how she landed the role of D'Nesh and what it was like working on the set, and even her love of cooking.

We’re pleased to announce the eighth episode of our “Life After Trek” podcast, featuring Crystal Allen. Many of you will remember Crystal from her role as D'Nesh in the Enterprise episode "Bound". D'Nesh was one of the Orion Slave Girls used to gain control of the Enterprise and subdue Captain Archer and his crew. Crystal was also involved in the Tim Russ helmed fan film "Star Trek: Of Gods and Men" were she played Conqueror Navigator Yara.We originally met Crystal at last year's Starbase Indy convention, but unfortunately ran into technical difficulties and were unable to record the interview live. Crystal was a great sport and called in to provide you guys & gals with insight into her time spent in the Trek universe. If you haven't checked out "Of Gods and Men", be sure to do so. You can find more info here on the official website. We hope you enjoy listening to this episode as much as we did recording it. Be sure to stop by the official Crystal Allen website here to see what projects she has in store.
