Kia ora e te whānau. Jasmin Paris was rocketed into the wider consciousness when she became the first woman to finish Barkley Marathons, with 99 seconds to spare. Ironically, for a race that eschewed publicity for so long, the photos of Paris sending the final 100 metres or so to the yellow gate are arguably more famous than the Barkley itself.  Whilst this may be Jasmin's best known achievement, it's far from her only one. Spine winner, Bob Graham Round holder, fell running champion, senior lecturer in veterinary science, Mother and partner. Jasmin's life is full. Ali and Matt spoke to Jasmin about all this, and Green Runners, the organisation she co-founded with Damian Hall to advocate for, and address climate issues related to the sport of running and the wider world. Running 44@60 Podcast - plotting Trevor Lee's journey to the 2021 44 mile Cornwall Classic Quarter

Send us a textOne of the things I'm always trying to do on this podcast is have people on it who have completed running challenges that we've not covered before and indeed many of the listeners might not have heard of.I first met Martin Elcoate at the Cornwall Running Show in 2023 when he was one of the volunteers on The Green Runners stand. And then earlier this year Martin appeared in a whole page article in Runners World featuring the amazing challenge he had undertaken starting at the beginning of 2024 involving a bespoke Ordinance Survey map and the 400 km² that surrounded where he lived.Essentially Martin's plan was to run through every one of the 400 squares all of which are 1km x 1km. Martin's dairy can be found on Instagram @martinelcoateMartin shares details of the challenge and also gives us an update on what's happening with The Green Runners including a crowdfunding campaign they have launched to enable them to employ a couple of people to help them massively expand their work. You can access and download the previous 156 episodes of this show via your usual podcast app or on the Running 44@60 podcast page. I ran my first, and so far only, ultra marathon in 2021 - the 44 mile Classic Quarter - to celebrate a landmark birthday which was a few weeks before the run. This podcast started as a way of me learning how to do that - hence why it's called Running 44@60. The adventure then turned into a book and as a business consultant it became both a business and running book and is available on Amazon via this link: 12 Business Lessons from Running an Ultra Marathon. My run raised over £7000 for Childrens Hospice South West Music Therapy programme and every book bought on Amazon generates another £5 for the programme.    The Running 44@60 podcast began as a learning / motivational tool for host Trevor Lee in his quest to run a first ever ultra - the Classic Quarter in 2021 - here's the story of Running 44@60 It now has over 140 episodes and is aimed at those thinking about and committing to their first ever ultra.Trevor wrote a book : 12 Business Lessons from Running an Ultra Marathon - all proceeds go to the Children's Hospice South West

In Frozen Lake State Park, Tennessee, Jasmin Paris completed the 100-mile course with just 99 seconds to spare, and saw supporters quite literally on the edge of their seats willing her to reach the yellow gate at the finish line.Jasmin is the co-founder of The Green Runners, and she uses her platform to speak out on green issues and help other runners make more sustainable choices, with the races they might choose, or how they train for runs.We talk about things that helped her complete the Barkleys, including how she trained, what she ate, what kind of support she received and how she mentally prepared. We cover what it was that helped her complete this year's race over and above other years. She tells me how she always believed it was possible - and she did it to prove it to herself, but also to show that it could be completed by a woman. We also talk about her biggest moment of doubt.Although she eats a healthy diet at home, we talk about the kind of calories needed to get through the miles, and Jasmin talks me through what a typical training week might look like.We talk about how nostalgic Jasmin is now about her training and looking forward to getting back into it ready for new things ahead.Jasmin touches on the changes race directors could consider to encourage more female participation, including pregnancy deferral and better facilities generally.Taking action on green issues is something that Jasmin is passionate about, and we talk about her platform and how she has to combat her anxiety about social media to promote what she believes deeply about.Pledging to fly less, reuse kit, eat less dairy and speak out, we talk about what The Green Runners represents. Jasmin has turned down opportunities to races in Australia and Mexico due to her pledge not to fly.We discuss how policy change at a higher level is crucial, and although individual responsibility is important, collective change is crucial. She's ready for her next challenges and May brings more races for Jasmin. If you're interested in fell running, Jasmin gives her advice on how to get started too.Listen in to hear first hand from a record breaker and all-round superwoman!Find out more about The Green Runners at www.thegreenrunners.comFollow Jasmin on X @JasminKParis

Try running for a few miles, and then a few miles more, and then several hundred few miles more. That's proper endurance that is, the kind demonstrated regularly by Damian Hall: ultrarunner, climate activist, author, and all-round lovely chap.  He's the holder of the men's record for the 268-mile Spine Race, so he knows a thing or two about keeping going when things look grim.   And when it comes to climate change, heaven knows we need a bit of that. What can running very long distances teach us about perseverance despite increasingly grim climate news? What has Damian learned about climate activism from running up mountains all day long? And is running REALLY as bad for the planet as Formula 1? (Spoiler: no).   Damian is the co-founder of the Green Runners. Run? Join. So, who better than to invite to the party to get our new season off to a flyer than the fella with the 2nd best mohawk in running, the one and only Damian Hall. After our usual intrepid intro Damo joins us and we cover plenty enough to get yir lugs tingling with glee. From his first foray into running right through to his most recent adventure at the Barkley Marathons. We get to the bottom of his running story; you did know he ran his first mara dressed as a toilet, right? With time spent on discovering ultras and the realisation that his body was capable of much much more than he first imagined. Damo lets us in on how he found adventuring ultra-addictive, bimbling along often with pals soon becoming his preferred leisure pursuit. Spine Races, the Barkley Marathons take centre stage for our middle segment before we move on to more important matters like bendy bodies, favourite trail snacks and of course his wee bromance with the tea dodger John Kelly. Lastly, yet most importantly Damo discusses his role within the Green Runners movement and shares his concern about environmental matters that he works so hard to raise awareness of and seek action against. It's something we can all do a little (or a lot) to help with even if that's just sharing a lift to the next race you're running. It feels over in a flash, and yet we have so much more to chat about. I finally caught up with Jasmin Paris on the Isle of Jura the day before the eponymous race to chat about some of her more recent achievements. We start off with the iconic Isle of Jura Fell Race and what it means to her, before moving on to talk about The Green Runners. This is a new group set up with the aim of connecting runners concerned about the Climate Crisis, and helping to give them a united voice to try and foster change within running culture (in terms of reducing personal footprints of travel, kit and food) and the wider world (by speaking out and political change). Jasmin's running CV has a depth to rival the deepest Jura bogs (!) so I've tried to focus on a few of her more recent feats, namely The Spine Race and the Barkley Marathons. The Spine Race crosses a humungous 268 miles along the Pennine Way in mid winter, and in 2019 Jasmin bagged the overall record of just over 83 hours. There was rightly a massive media interest in this globally, celebrating Jasmin the mum as well as Jasmin the ultrarunner. I try to get into her process a bit; what gives her the grit and determination that she clearly has in bundles. We also discuss what it means to be a top woman in sport and how she balances running with family life. We finish by talking though some of the highs and lows of the Barkley Marathons ultra that Jasmin completed the 'Fun Run' 3 lap version of in March this year. This event has developed a reputation as a gruelling and esoteric 100mile+ event that only 15 people have every completed the full 5 laps version of in its 27 year history. With bush wacking in the dark, snowstorms and difficult navigation it's a full psychological assault, and we examine what resilience tools and tricks Jasmin employed.
