Chatting with Dams Denna Dan Madsen has had an amazing life. His fandom has become his work and has taken him to the worlds of both of his favorites, Star Wars and Star Trek. Dan has not only been tagged by both George Lucas and Gene Roddenberry to run the official fan pages of their respective universes, but he has also been able to work in Back to the Future and Lord of the Rings universes. Not to mention his cameo in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace as Dams Denna. We also talk about his work with Ashley Eckstein, the voice of Ahsoka Tano, on her clothing line - Her Universe, which celebrates fandoms from the female perspective. And still, this only scratches the surface of the career of Dan Madsen. Maniac Mansion: "The 10th Anniversary Special" In quite possibly the only time we'll ever cover a pilot episode on this podcast, Chris Cummins of Sci-Fi Explosion joins us for this forgotten, but subversive and smart Eugene Levy-helmed Canadian sitcom and its bizarre first episode – a fake clip show celebrating its 10th anniversary. Seriously! We talk about this show's deep connections with Schitt's Creek, Freaks and Geeks, and the hugely influential improvisation powerhouse Second City and SCTV. Plus, a dive into this show's origins as a LucasArts video game adaptation, a brief history of The Family Channel and its religious ties, and the clip show parodies, dream sequences, anniversary special tropes, JFK assassination jokes, and meta references that this truly daring episode offers.Watch Sci-Fi Explosion on TwitchFollow Sci-Fi Explosion on InstagramA proud part of The Glitterjaw Queer Podcast CollectiveTip us on Ko-Fi | Gimmicks WebsiteEmail: gimmickspodcast@gmail.com | Bluesky | InstagramTheme song: "Disco Tears" by Raven | Creative Commons Attribution 3.0Sources: 1992 Entertainment Weekly piece on “SCTV” alumni are working on the show, Benjamin Scetskey writing for Entertainment Weekly, January 1992The Weird and Wonderful History of Maniac Mansion, Ian Howard writing for Fandom, November 2022Exclusive Interview with Eugene Levy: Creating the Comedy for Maniac Mansion, Dan Madsen writing for Lucasfilm Fan Club Magazine, August 1990. It's an exciting moment for Into A Larger World Project as Kara brings you this interview with Dan Madsen, Star Wars fandom legend. Dan was present at some huge moments in Star Wars history, whether it's the 10th anniversary convention in 1987, spending time at the helm of the Star Wars Fan Club, founding the magazine Star Wars Insider, and even on set (and on screen!!) in The Phantom Menace. Most notably (and most excitingly for Kara), Dan was the producer of the original Star Wars Celebration in 1999. Dan tells Kara all about his Star Wars history, the wild times in fandom leading up to Episode I, and of course the whole timeline of that first Celebration.Find Dan on Instagram (https://instagram.com/madsen8973?igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA== ) or in this awesome Facebook group (https://www.facebook.com/rememberswcelebration1?mibextid=LQQJ4d ) where tons of Celebration memories are shared!Into A Larger World fully supports SAG-AFTRA in their fight for a fair contract. Show notes provided by Joe Peluso If "one is the loneliest number" (apologies to Three Dog Night), then two has to be better. Right? Sure it is. The number two is the smallest, and only, even prime number, but more importantly, it's a symbol of teamwork, service, love, and friendship. Now after two years, and more than 150 episodes of The Secret Origins of Mintcondition wending its way through digital media, the 2nd anniversary episode has arrived! The welcoming, warm, fun spirit of Mincondition Comics lives on for all to enjoy! Join your hosts, James, Chris, and Joe as they recollect a year's worth of pop culture professional appearances (Michael Jan Friedman, Jeremy Adams, Keith Williams, Dan Madsen, and Larry Kenney), and recurring, treasured friends (Richie. Arco, Jack, Keith, Adrienne, and Josh) popping up to share their nerdiness. Personal highlights for the past year are shared (including the special episode with Tom Payne), and thanks to the Mint Community are joyfully acknowledged. Back of the Store Chats, Comics' Corners, Sports Shorts, rants (someone please remind Joe to take his medication) raves and more are the stuff that made for a successful and fun-filled 2nd year. And as with every reminiscence, some new information is always unearthed. Learn why "the chipper" haunts Chris, and why Joe will never let go of his obsession with The Brooklyn Nets. See what you started, James? Two years in the books, folks! It's been a blast! And we could not have done it without you--our loyal friends and followers. And so from Three Dog Night to Frank Sinatra--The Best is Yet to Come!!
Show notes provided by Joe Peluso We wouldn't be here, on this podcast, if we weren't fans. We are dedicated enthusiasts of comics, Sci-fi, TV, movies, games, music, and of course, sports. No one in our circle denies the reality of our passion, but can anyone in our sphere call themselves a super-fan? Ponder that question as you are about to spend an hour with writer, producer, publisher, and marketing genius Dan Madsen. The progenitor of both Star Trek and Star Wars fandoms joins your hosts James, Josh, and Joe to offer up a master class in fandom history. Make sure those "inertial dampeners" are online before you make the "jump to light speed" because you are about to go where no fan has gone before!
The Smugglers Three are back with episode 300 of Wookiee Radio. On this special anniversary episode we are joined by the original Star Wars uber-fan Dan Madsen. We discuss how he started Celebration 1. How did he start the official Lucasfilm & Star Wars Fan Clubs? What was it like working directly with Lucasfilm? What is […]
We are joined by the illustrious DAN MADSEN, the founder of the Lucasfilm Fan Club in the 80s which rebranded as the Star Wars Insider. As the professional fan inside the Lucasfilm apparatus, he was in a unique position to witness the creation of the most anticipated films of all time. Josh has a great conversation with Dan as we discuss the delicate balance between business and fandom, why it was a bad idea to have only one pair of socks at the first Star Wars Celebration in 1999, and what the legacy of the prequels is today. On our final episode before we hit the road for Anaheim and Celebration 2022, we bring on the man who started it all - Star Wars legend Dan Madsen!
The first Star Wars Celebration took place in Denver, Colorado ... and it almost didn't. In this special episode (an edit and remix of Episode 63 from 2020), Scott Chernoff and Dan Madsen tell the story of how they brought it to life. From the tragedy of the Columbine shooting just days before to a 100-year rain that turned Wings Over the Rockies into a muddy mess to Lucasfilm considering pulling the plug at the last minute, Dan and Scott give you the inside scoop. Dan Madsen is a former president of the Official Star Wars Fan Club and the founder and former publisher of the Star Wars Insider magazine. A journalistic writer, he contributed many of the interviews and pieces to the Lucasfilm Fan Club Magazine as well as writing the "Making Of" book for The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles TV series. He made a cameo appearance in Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace as a kaadu handler, dubbed Dams Denna in Star Wars Legends. Scott Chernoff is a writer, editor, and performer who has worked extensively for official Star Wars publications, most notably Star Wars Insider magazine, where he was a writer and Managing Editor. He also wrote regularly for Star Wars Kids and contributed to Star Wars Galaxy Magazine and StarWars.com. He is the author of the 2002 book The Stars of Star Wars and has served as an onstage host at three Star Wars Celebrations.Chernoff is also a comedy writer and performer known for his work on Rick and Morty, BoJack Horseman, Hot Streets, Conan, and School of Rock, among others.Link to the photo site we discuss in the episode: http://www.buckwildbill.com/denver.htmlATGcast.comPatreon.com/ATGcast@ATGcast(c) 2022 Pete in the Seat Studios

We go back to 1987 with Dan Madsen! Over Memorial Day weekend in 1987, Star Wars was celebrating its 10th Anniversary. To commemorate such a milestone, Starlog Magazine held a convention in Los Angeles called, “Starlog Salutes Star Wars–A 10th Anniversary Tribute to George Lucas and the Galaxy Far, Far Away Which He Created!” We prefer the title – Star Wars Celebration 0. Only a few thousand fans attended, as opposed to the tens of thousands that attend these past Celebrations. I was there and, another big Star Wars fan was there, a fan who would rise in the ranks to become the founder and president of the new Star Wars fans club and publisher of the upcoming Lucasfilm Fan Club magazine, Dan Madsen! On this episode we will listen to a selection of the George Lucas Q&A Panel, and comment on his answers. What predictions and statements came to be? What was George's answer to a pointed question, "Why is there only 1 woman in Star Wars?" George's answers may blow your mind. Harp musician (and sci-fi/Star Trek fan) Erin Hill explains how she merges sci-fi fandoms with music creations. Dan Madsen (the creator of the Star Trek Fan Club and Newsletter) shares stories and memories from his life in Star Trek, including a funny (and maybe a little embarrassing) first interview, a memorable Star Trek contest winner and an Original Series episode that changed his life.
Dan Madsen is the man who launched Star Wars Insider Magazine, created Star Wars Celebration and ran the official fan club. He even had to the opportunity to do what most fans dream of when he appeared in THE PHANTOM MENACE as Dams Denna. His footprint on Star Wars fandom is undeniable and we are honored to welcome Dan back to RFR. Dan shares great stories about his interviews with George Lucas and Rick McCallum, the excitement of the hype leading up to the release of Episode I, and the challenges of running the first-ever Star Wars Celebration. Plus, an Outrageous Unthinkable news story featuring an angry ex-boyfriend seeking revenge via Chewbacca impersonations, and we present the world premiere of a killer industrial metal tribute to Saw Guerrera.
Young Indiana Jones buys the popcorn for the final time! We reflect on our 3 years of watching Indy grow up and mash-up our favorite moments from all the episodes. Featuring new information from Dan Madsen's 1991 Book "On the Set and Behind the Scenes", adventures with Old Indy, and exclusive interviews.

If you've ever read an issue of the Star Wars Insider or attended Star Wars Celebration, you've got today's guest, Dan Madsen, to thank. Founder of the Lucasfilm Fan Club, Mr. Madsen got his start as the president of the Star Trek Fan Club, eventually coming to LFL in a time when there were no new Star Wars movies being made. Whether talking about those early days of the magazine, his cameo in The Phantom Menace, or the rainy start of Star Wars Celebration Denver, Mr. Madsen’s love of the fan community and his passion for projects like Her Universe is evident in every answer. It really is an honor to have Mr. Madsen on the show, if only to thank him profusely for the Insider articles that are still some of the best, most comprehensive resources out there, for Star Wars fans. In 1999 the very first Star Wars Celebration took place in Denver Colorado. It was not without it's challenges. From torrential 100 year rains to the tragedy at Columbine days before. However, Dan Madsen of the Lucasfilm Fan Club and Scott Chernoff of Star Wars Insider led the charge and it became one of the most memorable and important Star Wars fan events of all time. @THEDanMadsen and @ScottChernoff on Twitter Watch new episodes of #AroundTheGalaxy every Tuesday at 12:00 noon EST / 9 PST at YouTube.com/BeyondTheBlastDoors Original Dan Madsen episode: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/episode-30-dan-madsen/id1460815340?i=1000449194616 Original Scott Chernoff episode: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/episode-25-scott-chernoff/id1460815340?i=1000446226110 Around the Galaxy online: www.BeyondTheBlastDoors.com www.Patreon.com/BeyondTheBlastDoors.com @ATGcast Our host: www.PeteFletzer.com ATG Swag: www.TeePublic.com/users/AroundTheGalaxy Theme Music: Apollo’s Ghost, Available on iTunes Please subscribe, like, share, rate us 5 stars and review us. Today Dan Madsen is the head of PR & Marketing for HerUniverse, the Ashley Eckstein (Ahsoka Tano) fangirl fashion line. But before that he was better known as the president of the official Star Wars fan club and publisher of Star Wars Insider from 1987 to 2001. Dan shared stories with us about meeting with George Lucas, being charged to reignite the fan club, the first Star Wars Celebration and the bit part he played in The Phantom Menace. Hi fellow Star Wars action figure collectors and Star Wars fans! April 2019 marks the 20th anniversary of Star Wars Celebrations and in only a few weeks (May 3rd) we'll celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Episode 1 toy line! In order to celebrate this truly iconic moment I dug in the archives and pulled out an interview with Dan Madsen, which a few years later I am still fascinated by. There are not many people who have contributed to Star Wars fandom as much as Dan, his passion for Star Wars and hard work laid the foundation for this generation's Star Wars fandom. His stories about running the Lucasfilm Fan Club in the 80's and 90's, the Star Wars Insider, exclusive fan club Star Wars figures, organizing Star Wars Celebration I in 1999, meeting George Lucas, secret knocks on doors inside Skywalker Ranch, being an extra in Episode I, watching George Lucas cut the Episode I trailer, and the excitement inside Lucasfilm before Episode I was released, all those stories are truly exciting and not to be missed!

"The Get-Together" is a podcast about the nuts and bolts of community building. Hosts Bailey Richardson and Kevin Huynh of People & Company ask organizers who have built exceptional communities about just how they did it. How did they get the first people to show up? How did they grow to thousands more members? In this episode we interview Dan Madsen, the secret sauce behind the Star Wars Fan Club and the first Star Wars Celebrations. After a fan zine he created as a Denver teenager was noticed by George Lucas himself, Lucasfilm asked Dan to help them. He was tasked with “[keeping] Star Wars in front of people. I had to keep it alive and vibrant, keep the excitement up,” Dan told us, and man did he nail it. Dan took over the Star Wars Insider magazine, growing it to 500,000 subscribers at its peak). Eventually he also took the reins of the official Star Wars Fan Club (growing it to 180,000 members), ran a $20 million collectibles business and hosted the very first Star Wars Celebration, bringing tens of thousands of Star Wars fans from around the world together for the first time. In our interview, we ask Dan about his lifelong devotion to Star Wars and its fans. We’ll dig into how Dan made that first Celebration a success, and also about how he grew his relationship with Lucasfilm from that first zine to a global fan enterprise.

Before the Internet, there was Dan Madsen. Star Trek and Star Wars fan experiences would not be the same if not for Dan. For twenty-five years, Dan was publisher and president of the Official Star Trek Fan Club Newsletter, providing fans with information about actors, writers, artists, and crew. In a similar vein to producer/director, J.J. Abrams, Dan’s career has taken him into both of sci-fi’s greatest franchises.**In the early 1970s, the attention Dan garnered over at Paramount Studios, propelled him into the first ever licensure for a fan magazine, and for 150 issues, The Star Trek Communicator Magazine, was, for most fans, the go-to place for Star Trek news. Dan also went on to publish the LucasFilm Fan Club and Star Wars Insider magazines. *While his business life and experience lay within the world of scifi fandom, Dan has a unique and intrinsic view of alternative history and the paranormal. He also appeared in the films, Free Enterprise (1998), Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999) and Star Trek 25th Anniversary Special (1991). He is now part of www.HerUniverse.com, licensing clothing and merchandise to the “fan girl” sci-fi and fantasy fans, with licenses in nearly all pop cultural realms of the sci-fi and fantasy fan world. Looking for par'Mach In All the Wrong Places. Sometimes love is staring you right in the face, and other times you have to search for it. Both were the case when Grilka, Quark's ex-wife, came aboard the Station. Smitten with the unattainable and “glorious” Klingon Lady, Worf decided to win her heart by proxy when he concocted a plan to help Quark reconnect with his lost love. To pull it off, Worf employed the help of the woman whose heart he could have, if only he'd wake up and smell the raktajino. In this episode of The Ready Room we're joined by Matthew Rushing and Will Nguyen to discuss Deep Space Nine's foray into romantic comedy, “Looking for par'Mach In All the Wrong Places.” We explore its basis in Edmond Rostand's Cyrano de Bergerac, the comedic timing of Michael Dorn, Terry Farrell, and Armin Shimerman, why Worf is riddled with contradictions, and, of course, the blossoming romantic tendencies of the other O'Briens. In our news segment we discuss the Certificate of Commendation Star Trek Fan Club and Communicator founder Dan Madsen received from Colorado State Representative Paul Rosenthal, and Paramount's upcoming release of The Wrath of Khan as a steelbook. Join Marc B. Lee as he sits down with Dan Madsen, the creator of the Star Trek and Star Wars fan clubs.
We’re pleased to announce episode 24 of our “Life After Trek” podcast featuring Dan Madsen. Dan is know for forming the first official Star Trek fan club, creating Star Trek Communicator Magazine, and running the official Lucasfilm Fan Club for nearly 20 years, just to name a few. Being a longtime fan of Star Trek, starting with TOS syndication in the 70s, Dan started his jaunt into the fan club scene with a small ad in Starlog Magazine in 1979. The fan club grew with leaps and bounds until 1982 when he was approached by Paramount to head the first officially licensed Star Trek fan club. Dan has been a major force in Trekdom for over 30 years and has continued his work today with the extremely popular Her Universe clothing and collectibles company We had an amazing time talking to Dan and reliving his journey through both Star Trek and Star Wars fandom. To be honest, there's too much to fit in just one episode. Hopefully we can have him back in the very near future. This is a gem of an episode that you don't want to miss.
Matter Stream: Science, Creativity, and the World Inspired by Star Trek
Dan Madsen. As Star Trek fans we all dream of finding ourselves right in the middle of it all—on the set, covering the biggest moments in franchise history as they happen. For Dan Madsen, that dream came true when Gene Roddenberry told Paramount that what started as a fan newsletter should become official. When Paramount Pictures approached Dan Madsen in 1982, what had begun as a simple newsletter about Star Trek: The Motion Picture grew into one of the largest endeavors in fan history. With the backing of Gene Roddenberry himself, The Official Star Trek Fan Club was born and this newsletter evolved into the magazine that came to be known as Star Trek Communicator. It set Dan Madsen on a lifelong journey with Star Trek, and the nature of this story could not be more fitting to the core of what Star Trek represents. In this episode of Matter Stream we’re joined by Dan to talk about this journey and what Star Trek has meant to his life.
