Darryl Plecas, former Speaker of the Legislative Assembly comments on Craig James being found guilty on breach of trust
We've got an important interview for you. Darryl Plecas is a former Member of the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia for Abbotsford South from 2013 to 2020, and served as Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia from 2017 to 2020. He blew the whistle on bizarre and questionable spending by staff in the B.C. Legislative Assembly, with a series of bombshell reports sparking resignations and ongoing change in Victoria. Our B.C. Director Kris Sims spoke with him about the reports, and what changes should be made in the B.C. Legislative Assembly for full transparency. The Canadian Taxpayers Federation has called for further transparency by making all employees at the legislature subject to freedom of information requests, and requiring all expenditures using taxpayers’ money to be publicly posted online. Darryl Plecas' final report from the Speaker's Forum and Trudeau's fiscal update. The post Ep 218: Darryl Plecas’ last hurrah appeared first on PolitiCoast.
The Speaker of the B.C. Legislature makes his voice heard.
Chapter 1
The Auditor General's report on the expense scandal involving the BC Legislature clerk and sergeant-at-arms is out, and Carole Bellringer has found multiple examples of weak rules that govern legislature spending. Her report also found that travel expenses by speaker have increased three-fold, from $20,000 to $60,000, since Darryl Plecas took office. Guest: Keith Baldrey Global's BC Legislative Bureau Chief
Chapter 1
A report by former Supreme Court of Canada Chief Justice, Beverley McLachlin, has found that one of two men in the BC Legislature, accused of misconduct did in fact violate employment rules. Government house leader Mike Farnworth says Clerk Craig James violated 4 of 5 rules. It was determined there was no misconduct on the part of Sergeant-at-Arms Gary Lenz. He'll remain on administrative leave with benefits and pay. The pair were suspended with pay in November last year. Guest: Alan Mullen, Chief of staff to Darryl Plecas
Chapter 1
That was just some of what the speaker of the BC Legislature, Darryl Plecas, told the Lower Mainland Local Government Association on Wednesday night in Harrison Hot Springs. His speech to municipal politicians focused on the lack of political leadership and what he called a crisis in the lack of trust the public has for elected officials. In an effort to underscore his point about a void of political leadership, Plecas said the Hells Angels, Mafia, and organized crime in general have good leaders. Those comments and others didn't sit well with some elected officials. He was interrupted several times including one Councillor telling him she felt insulted, and talked down too. Our Richard Zussman has just spoken to Darryl Plecas in the past 10 minutes or so. He joins me now. Guest: Richard Zussman Global News Online Legislative Reporter
Chapter 1
The B.C. Speaker's office is promising more reports looking into activities by the clerk and sergeant-at-arms at the B.C. legislature. The Legislative Assembly Management Committee has agreed to hire a retired judge to probe more allegations, the latest of which were made public just last week. Gary Lenz and Craig James have denied all wrongdoing. And the new reports on questionable spending in the B.C. legislature has defense lawyers wondering about how the public nature of the accusations might affect the chances of a fair trial. I spoke to Darryl Plecas for about 15 minutes just before we came on-air, and put some of these concerns to him. Guest: Darryl Plecas Speaker of the BC Legislature
Within the hour, the Legislative Assembly Management Committee will meet, and they'll hear from the Speaker of the House, Darryl Plecas. He's hoping his second report will be made public so that taxpayers can know more of the evidence he's been gathering on the expenses scandal at the legislature. Guest: Richard Zussman Global News Online Legislative Reporter
Chapter 1
MLAs are doing their best to return to the house today for a throne speech that sets the political agenda for the coming months. But there's a dark cloud over the legislature, as the allegations revealed by Darryl Plecas have all three parties searching for answers. Sergeant-at-arms Gary Lenz and clerk Craig James have denied any wrongdoing after they were escorted from the legislature last November. Today's throne speech will lay out the minority NDP government's priorities for the next session of the legislature, a week before Finance Minister Carole James delivers her next budget. Guest: Richard Zussman Global News Online Legislative Reporter
Another busy week in BC politics, with Darryl Plecas giving his first broadcast interview since his bombshell report - that was right here on the Simi Sara Show on Wednesday - new data on the deferral accounts being used by BC Hydro, and Global News polling showing support for a public inquiry into BC's money laundering. On the Jon McComb Show this morning, Attorney General, David Eby, outlined why there has been no announcement yet on a public inquiry. Guest: Keith Baldrey Global BC's Legislative Bureau Chief

Chapter 1
It's a little over two weeks since Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, Darryl Plecas, released his bombshell report that alleged a litany of extravagant and flagrant overspending by staff at the BC Legislature. Sergeant-at-Arms, Gary Lenz, and Clerk of the House, Craig James, have not been charged with any crime and have denied all wrongdoing. They have until tomorrow to respond to the Legislative Assembly Management Committee, and we may learn their response in public then. Now, in his first broadcast interview since the publication of that report, Darryl Plecas spoke to us on the Simi Sara Show this morning just before we came on-air. Here's our conversation. Guest: Alan Mullen Special adviser to the Speaker of the House, Darryl Plecas
Darryl Plecas dropped his laundry list of concerns that led to the dismissal of the Clerk and Sergeant-at-Arms last November and it’s all anyone in bcpoli is talking about, so it’s basically all we’re going to talk about. BC Liberals leader, Andrew Wilkinson, has been speaking to the media in the past 10 minutes or so. He says that there are three things he would like to see the government do to address the expenses scandal at the legislature. He was asked specifically about his own MLA, Linda Reid. In a few moments we'll be speaking to Andrew Weaver on the program - and Weaver has called for Reid to step aside as assistant deputy speaker. Wilkinson was also asked if he accepts that the speaker, Darryl Plecas, has now been validated by the publication of his report.
Chapter 1
The spotlight is on the BC Liberals as the expenses scandal at the BC Legislature continues to spark so much conversation today. The man identified as an anonymous whistleblower in the speaker Darryl Plecas' report into alleged misconduct by the clerk and sergeant-at-arms in B.C.'s legislature says the matter of questionable expenses goes beyond the two accused senior staff members. Speaking exclusively to Global News, Connor Gibson says he was asked by Liberal MLA Linda Reid to file what he describes as inappropriate expenses. Gibson was identified only as ‘AB' in the Plecas report. Guest: Richard Zussman Global News Online Legislative Reporter
Keith Baldrey joins us to talk about today's LAMC meeting, and the upcoming byelections in Burnaby and Nanaimo. Guest: Keith Baldrey - Global BC Chief Political Reporter
Chapter 1
A recall campaign is in the works against the Speaker of the Legislature, Darryl Plecas. The Vancouver Sun this morning is reporting that a man called Robin Roy plans to submit paperwork to Elections BC at the end of January. He'll need to collect signatures from over 40 per cent of the eligible voters in the riding of Abbotsford South within 60 days in order to be successful. A short time ago, our Legislative Reporter, Liza Yuzda, spoke to Robin to find out why he's doing this. Guest: Liza Yuzda Global News Legislative Reporter
B.C. Premier John Horgan has called the Nanaimo byelection for January the 30th. The seat opened up when newly-elected Nanaimo mayor, Leonard Krog, resigned his provincial seat in November. The byelection is one of the most important in the province's history. If the Liberals win the seat from the NDP it will create a tie in the B.C. legislature, with speaker Darryl Plecas being required to break any tie. Guest: Richard Zussman Global News Online Legislative Reporter
Chapter 1
Unparliamentary language is threatening our democracy in BC but thankfully Darryl Plecas is there to save us from such profanity. Plus, what does peacekeeping even mean anymore, particularly in light of Ukraine’s request that the UN intervene on their behalf against Russia. And the conversation about supply management we know you’ve been dying to hear.... The post Ep 61: Minister of Silly Names appeared first on PolitiCoast.
The BC Liberal leadership candidates went to Prince George and it was a real roller coaster for Dianne Watts: she picked up the endorsement of Lucy Sager as Lucy left the race, and then she got whacked by the Prince George Citizen's Neil Godbout for her performance in Saturday's debate. Chris Gardner and Jordan Bateman break down the week that was for Watts, the leadership race, Darryl Plecas, Site C, Kinder Morgan and more on a Friday morning edition of the ICBA Cast.
On today's Inside Politics Shane Woodford talks Darryl Plecas taking the Speaker job, marijuana politics, the latest on the Site C dam, the carbon tax, and this week's BC Budget with his political panel Global BC's Keith Baldrey and the Vancouver Sun's Vaughn Palmer. After that the interim leader of the BC Liberal Party, Rich Coleman, is on the show. And in a podcast bonus we also talk legal marijuana with BC's Public Safety minister Rich Coleman.

The pair later discuss Darryl Plecas's decision to become speaker. Later, Kirk LaPointe and Hayley Woodin talk with Jock Finlayson, chief policy officer, Business Council of B.C. about the NDP budget update and what it means for B.C. businesses. See more of Kirk's commentary as well as Tyler's and Hayley's reporting at www.biv.com/
