Send us a textPeter Duffy's message is plain: The pace of mergers will get fatter and it will involve credit unions of all sizes, from the small to the mega institutions. First Tech and DCU may seem an outlier but now there is ENT and Wings and the pace will keep up, says Duffy who now has joined SRM.Will the chaos and uncertainty in Washington DC slow the merger pace? Duffy thinks not, indeed the pace may quicken. That's because, says Duffy, economies of scale are now the Holy Grail of financial institutions.  Bigger is a competitive advantage, he says.He does make one surprise prediction: he believes the number of credit unions deals with banks will decrease.  Listen to hear why (and it doesn't have much to do with ICBA's caterwauling).Listen up.Listen up.Like what you are hearing? We've seen a lot of shifts and change this year—the continued uptick in check fraud, the election, credit union acquisitions, etc.—but we community bankers are as steadfast, scrappy and resilient as ever. In fact, we show no signs of slowing down. According to Rebeca Romero Rainey, ICBA president and CEO, we've had a very successful year for ICBA's advocacy and grassroots efforts.   Take the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau's Section 1033, for example, where ICBA helped secure an exemption for community banks under $850 million. “What this this exemption tells me is that we've been very effective and have been heard that the challenges for some of our smaller institutions when it comes to working, for example, with the corporate service providers and being able to provide these solutions with while not completely increasing the cost to do is an incredible challenge,” says Romero Rainey. “It's an example of what we've been able to achieve over the years.”   ICBA's pushback against Section 1033 is just the tip of the iceberg. In this episode, Romero Rainey and host Charles Potts reflect on 2024 advocacy and look ahead to the wins we are likely to see in 2025, thanks to the past year's efforts.   This episode is sponsored by FIS.   Links Advocate for your industry by writing and speaking to your members of Congress. As the holidays approach, it's time to stay even more vigilant against fraud. That's because fraudsters are more likely to seek out vulnerable, lonely or busy people at the end of the year. How can community bankers get ahead of year-end fraud and raise awareness among consumers?   “I think that's the responsibility of community banks,” says Kausar Kenning, global head of payment systems intelligence for VISA. “Make sure that you're taking all those safety precautions, make sure that you're being proactive in your effort, and you're helping to prevent it from before it even begins.”   As Kenning points out, proactivity is key to fraud prevention. With hundreds of millions of cyberattacks happening each year, it's critical for community banks to fortify their cybersecurity operations. While it may be tempting to go after the hottest new cyber protections, it's important not to forget the basics, says Adlumin Inc.'s CEO, Robert Johnston.   “If you get the blocking and tackling done correctly, 85% of threats you can take off the table,” he says. “Get that right and you will save yourself a lot of pain from just brilliance in the basics.”   It can be daunting to figure out how to best keep your cybersecurity defenses strong, but partnering with a fintech can remove some of the heavy lifting and grant your bank and its customers extra protection and peace of mind.   Johnson and James Anderson, VP, information technology manager of Kitsap Bank in Port Orchard, Washington, talk to host Charles Potts about the cyberthreats community banks should look out for and how to prevent and mitigate them.   Independent Banker podcast is sponsored by FIS and this episode is sponsored by Adlumin Inc.   The October issue of Independent Banker features tips and guidance on what you need to know about cybersecurity today.   The heart of a community banker is a real thing. I remember it from my childhood, growing up in a community where my family was involved in the local community bank. My grandfather's and father's friends were bankers and they were passionate about the community and what the bank could do to help it thrive. Not everyone has had that experience, but Brad Bolton has, and he lives it by example every day in his community in Alabama and at his bank, Community Spirit Bank.  He also lives it through his involvement in the ICBA (Independent Community Bankers of America), where he was recently Chairman, and traveled the country meeting with his fellow community bankers.  It was an inspiring and insightful conversation to hear about his journey, his perspective and his passion for community banking. And I'm also excited about his resolve for how community banks will continue to effectively serve their communities from coast to coast. It's been a wild year so far for banks, and Brad's thoughts on what it means for community banks is worth a listen. Enjoy! Thanks to BankTech Ventures for sponsoring as well.

It was great to have Wayne Miller on the podcast and record our conversation, which wasn't far from a typical one we have all the time. Wayne recently joined ICBA to continue and expand the great work he's been doing with bank technology innovation and startups, and he's a key enabler of the future of community banking. Wayne and I talked a lot about what is on banks' agendas for the new year and how we're all working together to help them. I consider Wayne sort of a "founder whisperer" as he's worked with well over 100 of them in the last 6 years through a couple accelerator programs he oversaw. And with a focus on business development for the startups going through the program, it has been true business acceleration for them, and a big reason why it was named the fintech accelerator of the year a couple of years ago.
