The IARC Perspective on the Effects of Policies on Reducing Alcohol Consumption New England Journal of Medicine In 2020, alcohol use was responsible for over 740,000 new cancer cases worldwide. In response, The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) released a two-part handbook assessing the effectiveness of public policy measures in reducing alcohol-related cancer risk. The report found that reducing or stopping alcohol consumption lowers the risk of certain cancers and that several policy interventions, such as increasing alcohol taxes; setting minimum pricing; restricting sales by time, place, and age; implementing total sales bans; and enacting strong marketing restrictions, effectively reduce alcohol consumption. Government-run alcohol monopolies and coordinated national strategies were also associated with decreased use. However, bans on alcohol discounts produced inconsistent results. These findings align with the WHO's Global Alcohol Action Plan and SAFER initiative, highlighting the importance of targeted, enforceable strategies to reduce alcohol-related harm globally. Want to stop drinking, binging, overspending—or whatever habit you wish you had more control over? What if the key to real, lasting change is something as simple (and powerful) as breathwork? I know, I know—we've been breathing our whole lives. So how could this possibly be the game-changer? Our guest today says it's not that we breathe—it's that we've never used our breath intentionally. And that difference might be what's been missing in your journey toward healing. We dive into breathwork, but we also go deeper: Have you ever asked why you numb out with food, alcohol, shopping, or scrolling? Not just surface-level reasons—but the real root causes. What if that nightly glass of wine isn't just about stress, but about grief, disappointment, or feeling stuck in life? What if your habits are quietly helping you avoid loneliness, conflict, or painful self-reflection? Today, we're exploring the neuroscience of change, the habits we lean on to cope, and how small intentional shifts—like breathwork—can open the door to a different life. You're not a lost cause. (Yes, I say that a lot—but maybe this time, you'll finally believe me

In this episode of "Ditch the Lab Coat," Dr. Mark Bonta welcomes Dr. Behnam Banihashemi, a cardiologist specializing in cardiovascular prevention, wellness, and longevity. Dr. Banihashemi discusses the concept of Medicine 2.0, which includes advancements in pharmaceuticals and interventions that have extended life expectancy in the Western world, along with a focus on improving lifestyle choices to further enhance longevity. However, he emphasizes that the real key to living a longer, healthier life lies in addressing lifestyle factors such as fitness, nutrition, sleep, and mental health.Dr. Banihashemi explains that although cardiac procedures like stents can be life-saving during heart attacks, they do not necessarily improve life expectancy for those with stable angina. Instead, lifestyle changes have a more significant impact. He highlights the influence of pharmaceutical funding on medical research and practice, leading to an emphasis on treatments rather than preventive care. The conversation also covers the limitations of the Canadian healthcare system, which does not incentivize primary prevention, and the potential benefits of certain quick fixes like metformin or supplements like protein and creatine. Dr. Banihashemi stresses that small, consistent actions, despite not being marketable, are essential for longevity and that the healthcare system often focuses more on managing diseases than preventing them. Ultimately, individuals hold the power to take charge of their health through day-by-day lifestyle decisions, adding life to their years, not just years to their lives.Get Dr. Banihashemi's 8 Steps to Conquer Chronic Pain: A Doctor's Guide to Lifelong Relief : https://www.amazon.ca/Steps-Conquer-Chronic-Pain-Lifelong/dp/0778807118 Episode Highlights:Longevity Myths Debunked: Dr. Ben sheds light on the widespread misconception that a magic pill exists for living longer. Recent research has sparked a significant conversation about the health implications of alcohol consumption. A comprehensive study featured in The Lancet, one of the world's leading medical journals, has concluded that there is no safe level of alcohol use. This study, which analyzed data from 195 countries, challenges the long-standing belief that moderate alcohol consumption could be beneficial or at least harmless. Instead, it underscores that any amount of alcohol increases the risk of health problems, including a range of diseases from cancer to liver issues. This finding is a wake-up call for anyone who has considered alcohol consumption as part of a healthy lifestyle.Ready to quit drinking? Imagine, no more hangovers! In this episode of Daily Value, we look at how paternal alcohol consumption before conception could influence offspring health, longevity, and even accelerate aging. Referencing studies from Andrology (PMID: 38044754) and Aging and Disease (PMID: 39122451), we examine how sperm RNA modifications and mitochondrial dysfunction may persist long after alcohol cessation—potentially programming offspring for metabolic disorders, reduced NAD+ levels, and faster cellular aging.Discussion Points:Sperm Epigenetics: what rodent data tells us baout alcohol exposure altering small RNAs in sperm, disrupting gene regulation in the developing embryo.Mitochondrial Dysfunction: newer rodent data showing lower SIRT1/SIRT3 levels, and lower NAD+ in offspring whose parents were exposed to alcohol.Practical Takeaways: How long should alcohol cessation be before conception could help restore sperm quality and reduce the risk of accelerated aging in children for people who drink regularly.https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/39122451/ https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/38044754/ Support the show

Breaking news: Surgeon general calls for cancer warnings on alcohol. This headline generated a lot of messages and conversations with my family, clients and colleagues. It's happening! Maybe... It's been nearly four decades since Congress approved the first government warning label on alcohol, the one that says pregnant women shouldn't drink and warns about the dangers of driving while drinking. No updates have been made since then. Any effort to add a cancer warning label to alcohol would face significant push-back from a well-funded and powerful beverage industry, which spends nearly $30 million every year lobbying Congress. In this episode of The Sober Edge Podcast, I share more about the New York Times article. It will most likely take a long time for the outcry to result in changes in the labeling legislation. For cigarettes, it was 20 years after the first alarm bells were sounded before full labels warning of cancer were mandated. The good news is that this push may impact the guidelines about 'safe' drinking amounts, which are due to be reevaluated this year. Full Show Notes Here

How ya feeling? Stressed? Tapped out? Wired and tired at the same time? Weird cravings or swings in hunger? Let's talk about it and how this may be a sign that it's time to change your habits. Your host, William Grazione will go over ways to combat the adrenal insufficiency that can stem from being overstimulated and other consequential habits to help you live a life without being trapped in a cycle reliant on caffeine and alcohol.
We have long heard the claims that a glass of red wine is good for your heart, but it turns out that the research that fueled this wisdom was actually skewed. Some studies made it appear like moderate drinkers were healthier than people who didn't drink at all, leading the public to believe that alcohol was healthier than it is. While drinking alcohol occasionally might not have catastrophic effects on your health, the data shows that even moderate drinking will reduce your life expectancy. In this episode, we speak with Tim Stockwell, a scientist at the Canadian Institute for Substance Use Research and a professor of psychology at the University of Victoria. Stockwell has reviewed hundreds of studies that he claims embellished alcohol's effects, and he explains how the new science of drinking is changing the public perception of alcohol. Today, trends like sober-curiosity and “Dry January” are on the rise, and some countries around the world are even implementing new policies around alcohol regulation.
