They kick things off with his early life and the founding of his crypto exchange Quadriga that quickly became the biggest cryptocurrency marketplace in Canada. Then, they get into his sudden death in India, and the circumstances that led to being millions of dollars worth of crypto to just vanish. The story of Gerald Cotten is either one of a very sad tragedy...or one of the greatest scams ever pulled off. When Gerald suddenly died while on his honeymoon, a lot of people were shocked, he was young, wealthy, and seemed like a great person. ¡Hola! Welcome to Spanish in Five. Today, I'll tell you the strange story of Gerry Cotten, the founder of Quadriga, a cryptocurrency exchange. Here are some of the words I will use: criptomoneda, which means cryptocurrency; contraseña, which means password; luna de miel, which means honeymoon; estafa, which means scam; testament, which means will, the document a person uses to distribute their estate when they die. Algunas historias reales son más extrañas que la ficción. La historia que les voy a contar hoy es un ejemplo perfecto. Esta es la historia de Gerald Cotten, el Canadiense que fundó Quadriga, un sitio web para comprar y vender criptomonedas como Bitcoin. Upon checking into a luxury resort in India, Gerald Cotten complains to staff he's feeling ill. He and his wife are taken to a hospital and within 24 hours the young CEO is declared dead. A month passes before word gets out to customers that QuadrigaCX's CEO is gone — along with their money.

At the height of its success, Canada's QuadrigaCX was the largest cryptocurrency exchange in the country, perfectly positioned to ride the booming mainstream interest in Bitcoin and altcoins. On the backend, the operation was largely run by a single man: Gerald William Cotten. Yet there was more to the story; facts that, once revealed, indicated Quadriga was a Ponzi scheme. As the authorities closed in, Cotten took a trip to India in Decamber of 2018, where he suddenly passed away, taking with him access to millions of dollars in crypto. Coinbase and Gemini are reportedly the bank's first clients. This is the first time JPMorgan has taken clients from the crypto space. Coinbase and Gemini's accounts were approved last month, and transactions are now starting to be processed, per the report. JPMorgan is reportedly providing cash-management services to the crypto exchanges and handling dollar-based transactions for their U.S.-based customers. It will process wire transfers, and deposits and withdrawals through the Automated Clearing House (ACH) network. "It's quite significant news in my opinion," a banker told The Block. "There is little business in fees associated with processing wire and ACH payments, I would expect that there are other associated benefits to JPM from any associated banking services, additional collaboration with both of those firms, potential for winning any future IPO or another angle such as JPM coin being offered on either of those platforms." The banker added that the whole of Wall Street will notice this news, and it may lead to further doors being opened for crypto firms at other banks. "In the same way, the Paul Tudor Jones news gives macro hedge funds a justification to look at bitcoin, the largest bank offering crypto exchange services means a lot of credibility for the space."TON is officially dead. - Telegram founder Pavel Durov wrote in his public channel Tuesday that the Telegram Open Network (TON) project would be discontinued due to the company's ongoing legal fight with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). "Today is a sad day for us here at Telegram. We are announcing the discontinuation of our blockchain project. Below is a summary of what it was and why we had to abandon it," he wrote. An accompanying blog post said the SEC's winning of a preliminary injunction in a U.S. court led to the decision because it barred Telegram from launching TON or distributing its gram tokens. The move is an abrupt shift for Telegram, which said less than two weeks ago it would be launching the network in April 2021. Telegram announced at the end of April its investors could receive 72% of their funds back immediately, or 110% back in a year, once TON had launched. U.S. investors would not be able to take the latter option, Telegram said in a later update. In Tuesday's post, Durov did not say whether all investors would be immediately refunded or how much they'd receive. "Sadly, the U.S. judge is right about one thing: We, the people outside the U.S., can vote for our presidents and elect our parliaments, but we are still dependent on the United States when it comes to finance and technology (luckily not coffee)," he wrote. The dollar and its influence on the global financial system give the U.S. immense power, Durov said, adding that the country can also influence Apple and Google to remove apps from their respective app stores. "So yes, it is true that other countries do not have full sovereignty over what to allow on their territory," he wrote. Durov closed his post with an appeal to decentralization. "I want to conclude this post by wishing luck to all those striving for decentralization, balance and equality in the world. You are fighting the right battle," he wrote. While there Gerald fell sick and a few days later died from complications related to his Crohn's disease. Gerald was the only person who held the private keys to Quadriga's cold storage wallet, leaving an estimated CA$250m ($190 US) of customer deposits unrecoverable. In January 2019 QuadrigaCX, Canada's largest cryptocurrency exchange shut down for business, filing for bankruptcy in April. While initially it was suspected the loss was down to gross incompetence and failure to structure a contingency plan, conspiracies quickly started to circulate:  Had Gerald faked his death in India as an elaborate exit scam? When Gerald lost $millions of Ethereum in a smart contract bug a couple of years earlier, had he used customer funds on other exchanges to try and trade his way out of this hole? Had Gerald lost funds he was harbouring for criminal gangs and escaped to avoid repercussions? To add to the mismanagement of funds and keys the events leading up to and following his death were equally suspicious:  Just days before the trip Gerald had signed a new will leaving his entire estate to his wife.  Following his death, Gerald's wife did not request an autopsy and removed the body from the hospital.  His death was announced on January 14th, Despite dying on December 9th. Whatever the course of events in India, the death and mismanagement of the exchange and private keys raise many questions, and there are likely parts of the story we may never know. In this interview, I talk to author Nathaniel Rich about his investigation into Quadriga for Vanity Fair. We discuss the suspicious death of Quadriga's CEO Gerald Cotten, the missing $250m of customer funds and the FBI's investigation. The lawyer representing the clients who bought into Quadriga crypto essentially want the body to be exhumed. Many fear that Gerald Cotten had faked his death, and hundreds of millions of dollars are essentially missing. Our next guest has dug deep into this story. In January 2019 QuadrigaCX, Canada's largest cryptocurrency exchange shut down for business, filing for bankruptcy in April.While initially it was suspected the loss was down to gross incompetence and failure to structure a contingency plan, conspiracies quickly started to circulate:- Had Gerald faked his death in India as an elaborate exit scam?- When Gerald lost $millions of Ethereum in a smart contract bug a couple of years earlier, had he used customer funds on other exchanges to try and trade his way out of this hole?- Had Gerald lost funds he was harbouring for criminal gangs and escaped to avoid repercussions?To add to the mismanagement of funds and keys the events leading up to and following his death were equally suspicious:- Just days before the trip Gerald had signed a new will leaving his entire estate to his wife.- Following his death, Gerald's wife did not request an autopsy and removed the body from the hospital.- His death was announced on January 14th, Despite dying on December 9th.Whatever the course of events in India, the death and mismanagement of the exchange and private keys raise many questions, and there are likely parts of the story we may never know.In this interview, I talk to author Nathaniel Rich about his investigation into Quadriga for Vanity Fair. It comes to very little of a shock to people that have read the stories on coin telegraph that this guy is just doing an exit scam from what was biggest Canadian exchange, built upon fake trading, as many people on Reddit correctly surmised.

On this edition of the Crypto.IQ Daily Radio Show we do a deep dive market analysis. Bitcoin (BTC) is trading near $9,300 this morning, and it appears it could be testing resistance near $9,400-$9,500 sometime today. Increasing tension with Iran may be fueling Bitcoin (BTC) demand. Additionally the stock market is at its long term resistance level, and if history repeats itself and stocks go down from this level, it may fuel increased Bitcoin (BTC) demand. We discuss how the Founder of QuadrigaCX, Gerald Cotten, was making fake accounts on the exchange and loading them with fake money, and then buying real cryptocurrency with the fake money. Cotten then withdrew the cryptocurrency for margin trading and lost tens of millions of dollars due to multiple trading account liquidations. This disproves the original story that QuadrigaCX lost all their money because Cotten died with the private keys for the cold wallet. Hear about how Algorand, which is somewhat like a Proof of Stake version of Ethereum (ETH), has raised $60 million in an ICO. Some people are overstating the market cap of Algorand at $24 billion. Only 0.25% of all Algorand tokens were sold, and as more of the supply is distributed the price will drop significantly.

What is QuadrigaCX? QuadrigaCX is a Canadian Crypto Exchange that has been under controversy over $136 million dollars worth of missing customer assets. Earlier this month Quadriga was granted creditor protection while law enforcement and regulators sort out the mess of the missing funds. What really makes this story interesting is to this day no one has much of an idea what happened to the missing funds. What happened In January of 2019 the QuadrigaCX CEO, Gerald Cotten had died while in India. News of Gerald’s death came a month afterwards with a statement that he was the only one with access to the companies private keys and nearly all the exchanges assets were gone forever. Strange Backstory QuadrigaCX was completely compliant in 2015-2016 with Canadian regulatory laws and would provide audits available to the public. They hired a legal firm to completely handle their compliance and according to the firm QuadrigaCX was very open and transparent about all transactions. Things took a strange turn in 2016 when the CEO Gerald Cotten fired the regulatory team and began to manage Quadriga as “lawless” company. Weird Twists Quadriga was the first exchange to provide cold wallet insurance for its customers, provide public audits, and was a public listed company (comprised of four separate entities and several investors). There is little paperwork for financial transactions and allegedly Quadriga had no bank accounts. Quadriga often appeared to always have financial difficulties, despite having over 100,000 customers and 150 million in assets. They claimed to barely make any profit even when bitcoin was at an ATH of $20,000 and they were receiving a commission from every trade. The only person with access to the cold storage was the CEO Gerald Cotten. When his laptop, which held all the private keys was cracked, investigators discovered the cold storage wallets were emptied. Some of the funds have been traced to exchange “Hot wallets” on several different exchanges such as Kraken, Binance, and Bitfinix. The Quadrig Co-founder, Michael Patryn, is assumed to be a convicted money launderer named Omar Dhanani Quadriga would allow customers to withdraw $2,500 from their accounts, but could only pick it at physical stores that were considered “third parties.” A month before his death, Gerald Cotten signs a will leaving all his assets to his wife including: several properties, an airplane, a 51’ yacht, and a 2017 Lexus. Cotten was pronounced dead at a hospital in India, but the embalmer refused to work on the body since it was going to be brought in from a hotel rather than the hospital. No one has seen Cotten’s body since his death. His wife only presented a death certificate to the Canadian Government and his burial service was kept private. A month after the death of Cotten, several Quadriga customers complain they cannot withdraw funds from the exchange. As soon as Quadriga was given creditor protection it “inadvertently” $500,000 worth of Bitcoin to the dead CEO’s cold wallet that only he had access to. Cotten only purchased materials for the orphanage and in its current state it is failing financially.

A Halifax court heard yesterday about difficulties accessing 180-million dollars in digital assets believed to be locked in Gerald Cotten's laptop. The sole director of the trading platform Quadriga C-X was travelling in India December 9th when he died suddenly from Crohn's disease complications. His wife says she has searched their home in Fall River, Nova Scotia and has been unable to find any passwords or business records.( So how could this have happened, and what regulations should government be considering to avoid something similar happening in future? Many companies have CEOs who pass away, unfortunately, but they usually have other leaders who can step up. Think of Apple. The issue here is that this is a crypto exchange and one person, the CEO controlled this exchange's funds. One of the biggest attraction to crypto is the fact that you are your own bank. You control your security keys which means no one can take your crypto for you. The issue is if you forget your keys, there isn’t a customer Service number to complain to; your funds are gone. Instead of using a custodian or third party, QuadrigaCX decided to manage the funds themselves, but since they are handling the funds of their clients, they should have had continuity planning. This story highlights the importance of managing your crypto and having continuity and estate planning. What good is being the only person who knows your private keys if you pass away?

QuadrigaCX, one of Canada’s leading cryptocurrency exchanges, last week filed for creditor protection saying it was unable to retrieve almost $200m worth of deposits belonging to clients because its CEO Gerald Cotten, the only one able to do so, had unexpectedly died.
