Dr. David Coyle joins the RockneCast to discuss the joro spider, a venomous and invasive species that is currently spreading throughout the Southeastern United States. He is currently an Associate Professor of Entomology at Clemson University in the extension division. Dr. Coyle will discuss the spiders, how venomous it is, how it got here, how it "flies", and its anticipated reach in the United States. We also discussed a possible entomological enemy that might reduce the populations, but more research its needed to determine that answer. Dr. Coyle is at the cutting edge of this area of research. We'll also discussed his career path to becoming a PhD in Entomology along with his current research on the joro spider. Dr. Coyle and I played football for one year at Luther College and we also graduated in 1997 from Luther College. Loved doing this one!!

Shoot us a Text.Today is Tuesday! Things are happening in the auto industry, like how lower used car prices are driving down inflation, VinFast is forming a US dealer advisory board and Rivian is pressing ahead on future plans.Show Notes with linksUsed car prices have plummeted over the past year, reaching their lowest level since 2021, and are now the leading category reducing inflation, according to CoPilot's analysis of CPI data.Cox Automotive reports that the average list price for a used vehicle is now $25,251, down 7% from last year and the lowest since summer 2021.The June CPI report shows a 10.1% drop in used vehicle prices over the past year, with a 1.5% decline in the last month alone. The previous surge in used car prices was driven by a supply crunch in new vehicles.CoPilot CEO Pat Ryan explains that the supply of new vehicles has increased by about 50% since July 2023, easing pressure on the used market.“Consumers have finally found themselves with more options to buy new, rather than used,” Ryan noted.EV manufacturer VinFast is strengthening its presence in the U.S. by forming a Dealer Advisory Board to navigate the American market.VinFast aims to expand its U.S. dealership network with strategic advisory board members including David Coyle of Leith VinFast in NC, Damian Mills of VinFast Triad in NC, David Sansing, Elie Hanna, Bill AuffenbergVinFast has received 70 applications from dealers and plans to establish 125 third-party sales points by the end of 2024.David Coyle, Dealer Principal of Leith VinFast commented “This board represents a great opportunity for open communication and collaboration, ensuring VinFast remains at the forefront of the EV market.”Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe recently sat down with the Verge to cover the EV maker's future plans, why every EV looks like a Tesla, and the joint venture with VW.Rivian announced five new models this year: R2, R3, R3X, and updated versions of R1T and R1S. The R2 is set to launch in 2026 and already has 100K pre-orders.Scaringe believes that the slowdown in EV growth is not due to a lack of demand but rather a lack of variety in available models. He believes there is significant latent demand for EVs that meet diverse consumer needs. “Because of the Model Y's success, you have a lot of incumbents that have built products that look and feel and are shaped a lot like a Model Y.”The $5 billion joint venture with VW focuses on co-developing Rivian's streamlined electronic architecture, which reduces the number of ECUs (electrical control units) in vehicles, simplifying software updates and cost efficiency. VW aims to leverage Rivian's advanced technology across its brands, including Porsche, Audi, and Bentley.Rivian also just launched an EV Charging Outpost near Yosemite National Park, converting an old gas station into a rustic charging site, featuring a lounge area, complimentary librarHosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email

A team of researchers at University College Dublin and the Insight SFI Research Centre for Data Analytics at UCD have secured funding to build a Digital Youth Mental Health network in Europe and beyond as part of the EU's COST Action funding stream. The YouthDMH COST Action will be led by Dr Andreas Balaskas and Dr David Coyle and will run over four years, with the aim of supporting inclusive and innovative research on technology-enabled youth mental health. It will address issues including online help-seeking, information and misinformation, the role of social media, and the potential impact of emerging AI technology on mental health support. The project will emphasise the direct involvement of young people in the design of new technologies. It will also emphasise collaboration across disciplines and between academia and industry. The Action will provide policy guidance and recommendations for government, civil organisations and funding bodies. Project co-lead Andreas Balaskas, a research fellow at UCD School of Computer Science and a Postdoc with the Insight SFI Centre, explains the goal of the network. 'YouthDMH will consider how we can support mental health from the point at which young people first become aware of the difficulties through to the delivery of large-scale evidence-based interventions. It will do so in a way that ensures young people and marginalised communities have a voice in envisaging the future.' Dr Coyle commented, 'Our core aim is to understand how technology can complement and integrate with existing services and help to ensure that more young people have access to appropriate mental health support.' COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology) is a funding organisation for research and innovation networks. COST 'Actions' are interdisciplinary bottom-up research networks that bring researchers and innovators together to investigate a topic of their choice for four years. The success of the YouthDMH proposal is particularly noteworthy given the competitive landscape this year - the success rate for applications was 11.5%. For further information, click here.

After a burn injury, many survivors and their loved ones seek to gather resources of all kinds—and for many, legal counsel is an area that may be sought out to understand if the injuries sustained warrant legal action. While there may be a lot happening for a survivor and their family during this early recovery time, many may have questions about what legal action after an injury may look like. In this episode, we talk about commonly asked questions regarding legal action after a burn injury, seek to understand and learn more about the complexities of a personal injury case, and take real-time questions from burn survivors who seek to understand more about hiring a legal attorney. With the help of our guest host and Courage Rising member Hailey Boyce, we talk with our Season One sponsor, Pritzker Hageman, and learn more about Hailey's recent Mt. Kilimanjaro climb! About Our Guests Eric Hageman and David Coyle are burn-injury lawyers at Pritzker Hageman, P.A., a national law firm that helps burn survivors obtain justice. Eric has been a plaintiffs' lawyer, exclusively representing injured people, for over 27 years, while David has almost ten years of experience. Along with the other lawyers at Pritzker Hageman, Eric and David work together with their clients to pursue accountability for people who have been harmed through the negligence of others. Hailey Boyce is a burn survivor and a member of Team Courage Rising. Hailey's accident happened in 2016. Her vaporizer malfunctioned and blew up, causing 2nd & 3rd-degree burns on 30% of her body. In June, she summited Kilimanjaro. The trek up Kilimanjaro was organized so seven other survivors and Hailey could help raise funds for the new Arizona burn center. The team at Valleywise did an amazing job taking care of me during my recovery, I wanted to give back in any way I could. There is also a documentary being released in April about survivorship, recovery, & the Kilimanjaro hike. Howdy bug lovers! We're back after our 100th episode celebration and the Arthro-Pod gang is joined by Dr. David Coyle of Clemson to talk about some problematic invasive species. The first is Asian longhorn beetle, a wood boring pest that can cause extensive issues for city landscapes and forests. David ended up with this big beetle in his state last year during the early stages of the pandemic, further complicating the problem. We also discuss the latest on the Joro spider, a problematic arachnid that seems to like the state of Georgia. Will it be the next "murder hornet" that captures everyone's attention? Driving across our state we've all seen places where invasive species have overwhelmed our woodlands. In the upstate, kudzu or English ivy are most likely the culprits. In some Midlands forests, trees are completely engulfed by Asian wisteria – still sold and planted to this very day. One of the recent workshops offered by Clemson Extension at its Women Owning Woodlands events was options on controlling these plants that diminish the financial value of timberland and severely impact the environmental value of these tracts of land. Some of the options discussed were mechanical, using grazing animals to control these unwanted plants, especially on slopes or near water sources, and straight talk on the use of herbicides. If you search Southern Forest Health glyphosate David Coyle, you can find a reasonable article discussing this topic.

Trees that grow in a natural setting, like the forrest, aren't subjected to the same kinds of stress you find in urban or suburban trees. And the stress on a suburban tree is not the same as the stress of an urban tree. If the same type of tree was in 3 different environments, the overall health and growth would be markedly different. On this #treechat episode, we welcome Dr. David Coyle, assistant professor in the Department of Forestry and Environmental Conservation at Clemson University. David discusses how stress affects trees in different environments, how tree pests seem to know no boundaries, the impact of urban and suburban stress on trees, identifying risks and things property owners need to consider before planting trees in their landscape. We’ve been smitten with The Mitten for as long as we’ve loved beer, because Michigan just might be the best beer state in the Midwest. We stick to the western coast of MI as Craig gathered four interviews and five beers for this 11th stop in our ongoing State Show series. You’ll hear from John Lustina from Beer Church about how sometimes a good concept needs to be rushed; David Coyle from Arclight on their hopes for Chicago distribution; David Cockell from Watermark on how his biochemistry degree helps him keep yeast happy; and Mitch Ermatinger from Speciation on deriving character from patience. We also do our best to review these beers before Ryan succumbs to death by heartburn and before the new Pudgy Craig gets audibly winded. There’s also talk of communion wafer smells, cheesecake love, and an update on Ryan’s brewery concept. If you seek a pleasant state show, listen about you. What is forest health? How do we protect them from invasive species (and what are they?). Dr David Coyle (http://davidcoyle.uga.edu) from the University of Georgia explains! Presented by Dr Alexie Papanicolaou of the Hawkesbury Institute for the Environment (Western Sydney University, Australia), Science in a Cup is a short interview-style podcast where a scientist explains one word related to science. Sometimes it is a jargon but more often this is a word we use every day but scientists may have a different meaning.

This show has at least 3 shows worth of material. THIS WEEK: Michelle Maynard and Teena McClelland the ladies of Death by Design Co. talk about gore, guts, and their show at Gallery 400! Duncan, Richard and Amanda, rise above the fray and avoid saying snotty things about people related to a certain gallery space, once again, basking the entire time in the soft, warm glow of our moral superiority. Cassie Thornton checks in from NYC! We review Daniel Blanco's show at Flatfile. AND the year end wrap up. Duncan apologizes to the OODA group for being a jerk. We throw down the gauntlet to Liz Armstrong who is writing the Chicago Anti-Social column in the Reader. Duncan hates Anne Goldstein. More singing by all. People name dropped: Daniel Blanco, Michael Asher, Michael Workman, Philip von Zweck, Paul Klein, David Coyle, Mark Booth, Naughty Candy, Bruce Campbell, Jim Faulkner, Jasper Johns, The Booms, David Robbins (WHO IS NOT connected to Death by Design, honest, really, seriously, no foolin'), Readymade Magazine, Stan Shellabarger, Dan Flavin, Scott Speh, Brittney Spears, and Richard offers free legal assistance to Kevin Federline, as he will need it and so so much more. NEXT WEEK: The always controversial and busy Michael Workman, New City art critic, NOVA front man, Art Fair impresario, freelance writer and 92 other things talks about the art biz, pissing people off, the state of the Chicago art scene, and what the future holds, not to be missed! Duncan, Richard and Amanda talk about Maximum Wage! We might even have a piece by a second NYC contributor despite the fact they are too damn rude to spend 1 second and figure out what my name is before they write to us. Links may follow eventually, Duncan has gone back to the motherland.
