On this episode, we're joined by author and international human rights barrister Philippe Sands to talk about his latest book, 38 Londres Street, a gripping exploration of justice, memory, and impunity through the intertwining stories of Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet and Nazi fugitive Walter Rauff who spent decades in Chile avoiding extradition. We consider the groundbreaking legal concept of universal jurisdiction through the lens of Pinochet's dramatic 1998 arrest in London—a defining moment that transformed international justice—and what it means for the complex geopolitics of today. Drawing inspiration from literary figures like Roberto Bolaño, Bruce Chatwin, and Ariel Dorfman, Sands blends detective-style nonfiction with profound moral complexity, tracing the ominous echoes among Nazi Germany, fascism, and the Cold War. He also tells us about the book's sensational reception in Chile, where the effects of his reporting have reignited long-suppressed debates about accountability and national memory. In typical fashion, we also cover everything from Pinochet's visit to Hatchards a few days before his arrest—where he reportedly bought every book he could find on Napoleon—to his compulsive viewing of Star Wars films while awaiting trial.

Ele estudou Teatro no Teatro Escola Célia Helena, cursa Interpretação na Academia Internacional do Cinema (AIC) e integra a Laia Do Teatro. Rebecca and I both worked together at GSA on our public show Widows by Ariel Dorfman and Tony Kushner, and it was a pleasure to learn from her techniques and rehearsal activities to help myself and my peers immerse ourselves in the play, and find the inner journey of our characters. She is also incredibly passionate about just how important actors are to themselves and to the world with what they can do. We as actors show the world as it is, was, and what it could be. We share a physical and emotional bond to the public by sharing what others maybe scared to share, and make you laugh through moments in plays, films, dances that have happened in our own lives that have made you laugh. It was a sheer pleasure talking to Rebecca, and I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I did. Tollans musikaliska

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 5, 2017 41:18

Absurditeten hörs i hans falsettsång i galet läge.

The artists whose work he has produced have themselves moved on to win their own awards and run important institutions.Hal has gone on to be one of the leading producers in New York and around the globe. He has won four Tony Awards, including two as lead producer, and two Olivier Award, also as lead producer. Hal has seen all sides of the business, having worked his way up from working in an Off Broadway Theater, and subsequently producing Off Broadway shows, until he started producing big Broadway ones. And now he’s going to tell you all his secrets, including . . . What he believes modern Producers need to know to succeed. How Audra McDonald is helping him cross something off his bucket list.

Melvyn Bragg examines how two writers' work have been shaped by political oppression and explores whether writers have a political role in modern society. The connection between writers and politics has its roots in classical times, but in the 20th century the writer has been called on as the witness with increasing frequency and intensity. And many times the price of articulation has been severe. In the century in which saw the execution of writers such as Ken Saro Wiwa in Nigeria in 1995, and a fatwa imposed on Salman Rushdie, Melvyn Bragg talks to two writers who between them experienced exile, censorship and the manipulation of authoritarian states - Ariel Dorfman from South America and Nadine Gordimer, the Nobel Prize winner from South Africa, to discuss the writing of fiction and political oppression. What, if any, is the writer's political role in our world today? With Nadine Gordimer, Nobel Prize-winning South African novelist; Ariel Dorfman, South American journalist, scholar and author of Death and the Maiden.
