BeMo Brown is a producer, curator, and creative impresario based in Washington DC. From producing large festivals like the DC Funk Parade and PBR's Flower Bomb Festival to curating intimate and sophisticated events like Urbane and Parlor-styled discussions, BeMo has exhibited a keen understanding of the DC creative industry. Bryant recognizes the patterns of engagement as it pertains to providing high-quality events often featuring emerging talent based in DC. Publicly, you can hear Bryant hosting the “Wake N Bake With BeMo” podcast and live morning show analyzing patterns in modern culture.Behind the scenes, Bryant is hard at work transforming content from his Iive-produced shows into permanent media including albums, podcasts, cassettes and web series. In addition, Bryant has a talent for using his expertise to create revenue streams for various artists. He recognizes that as the DC creative industry is growing, DC can not spare another second as the call of other cities' creative industries grows louder. As such, Bryant has provided opportunities for DC-based artists to establish themselves as headliners for larger opportunities in DC and nationally. In DC's creative industry, there are several artists who have grown beyond the hobbyist nature of open mics but who have yet to catch their big break. Bryant has done a phenomenal job of recognizing these talented individuals, providing sophisticated and worthwhile opportunities while protecting the legacy of DC culture. The creative space that Bryant occupies is not glamorous or subsidized by guarantees but BeMo is brave enough to risk his personal success for the betterment of the creative industry. Some call that foolish, I call it right.Sponsored by Creative Affairs Office, Office of Cable Television, Film, Music & Entertainment. The Truth In This ArtThe Truth In This Art is a podcast interview series supporting vibrancy and development of Baltimore & beyond's arts and culture. To find more amazing stories from the artist and entrepreneurial scenes in & around Baltimore, check out my episode directory. ★ Support this podcast ★

Without a doubt, Dior Ashley Brown's is one of Washington D.C.'s driving creative forces. Her accomplishments as a solo artist alone would be enough to cover in one episode of Alchemicast: with Andy Reed. However, this member of DC area super group, Iza Flo, is also the founder of local music business education platform, DC Music Summit, a local nonprofit hosting an annual event put together by an incredible team of volunteers and hoping to offer more value to DMV musicians in 2021. Join this multifaceted artist and entrepreneur as she discusses influences, Hollywood, food, Nipsey Hussle, why she prefers wine over beer, how some indoor concert venues have been opening up their parking lots for outdoor events to keep business alive, and so much more...including another installment of "This or That?" Tune in as she so beautifully describes what it is like to be an artist and represent the DMV area. One of the youngest violin professors at Boston’s Berklee College of Music, Anick is considered “a rising star in the world of jazz violin and mandolin” (Downbeat Magazine). In addition to leading various groups under his own name and performing with the Rhythm Future Quartet, Anick has been touring and recording with Grammy award-winning Nashville guitar virtuoso John Jorgenson since 2008 when he was recruited while still a senior at the Hartt Conservatory. Over the past few years, Jason has been focusing on arranging and composing for the Rhythm Future Quartet, Jason Anick Acoustic Trio, and the Anick/Yeager Quartet. The Rhythm Future Quartet, which Jason started with Finish guitar virtuoso Olli Soikkeli, is rapidly becoming one of the preeminent Gypsy jazz groups in the country. The group just released its third album, "RFQ and Friends" which was praised by JazzTimes as "packed to the gills with feeling... dynamic, full of virtuosity and swing".The Jason Anick Acoustic Trio, which formed in 2017, applies Jason's formidable improvisational and compositional chops to the roots/fiddle music of his youth. The Jason Anick/Jason Yeager Quartet draws on the wide swath of musical interests of its co-leaders, blending straight-ahead and post-bop jazz, world music, funk and pop, eagerly embracing what Anick and Yeager have defined as “jazz without borders.” Their debut album, United, garnered rave reviews including 4.5 stars from Downbeat Magazine. A versatile musician and sought after side-man, Anick has also shared the stage with an array of artist like Stevie Wonder, Tommy Emmanuel, Hamilton de Holanda, The Jim Kweskin Jug Band, John Sebastian, Delta Rae, and Ward Hayden and the Outliers. With performances all over the world from China, Europe, and Japan and renowned venues like the Montreal Jazz Festival, Blue Note, Smalls Jazz Club, Scullers Jazz Club, Yoshi's, Iridium, TD Garden, Regattabar, NPR, and The Late Night Show, Jason has proven himself to be a leader in the ever-growing contemporary string world.Jason is also a sought-after educator, and has taught jazz violin and mandolin to students of all ages at string camps, workshops, and clinics around the world. Jason regularly contributes educational columns to Fiddler Magazine and instructional videos to DC Music and Christian Howes' Creative Strings Academy.
Alan Parkes is a PhD student in US history at the University of Delaware. He studies the impact of neo-liberalization on late-twentieth-century youth cultures. He is a member of California’s hardcore punk band Empty Eyes. In the early 1980s, Henry Rollins and Ian MacKaye, two young Washington DC punks, heard a song that, as Rollins recalls, “was so good that we pulled over just so we could listen to it without having to deal with traffic.” They waited to hear the radio DJ announce the song title after it ended. Rollins remembers, “the lady said that was ‘‘Pump Me Up’ by Trouble Funk,’ and Ian and I looked at each other and instantly came to the same conclusion: that is the beat we’ve been waiting to hear for our entire lives.” The go-go sounds of Trouble Funk and the hardcore punk created by Rollins, as a member of DC band SOA, and MacKaye as a singer of Minor Threat, while at seemingly opposite ends of musical taste, expose a distinctiveness in DC music-making that marked the 1980s and, more significantly, provide a basis for understanding the complexities of community formation in the teeth of rising neoliberal cultural influence. Alan argues that as a consequence of their emphasis on a localized do-it-yourself ethos, go-go and hardcore punk fostered an alternative to neoliberal cultural structures through music-centred community formation. He says, while go-go scene members constructed a community in response to DC’s postindustrial and political climate as well as a history of black suppression in the US, Washington hardcore punk scene members created a community informed largely by its counterparts in cities across the US and abroad but that nonetheless became distinctly identified with DC. Alan expresses that the beat that Rollins and MacKaye had waited to hear and the subculture they helped form exposes both the weaknesses and entrenched influence of prevailing neoliberal thought that defined the 1980s.
