Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for December 30, 2024 is: urbane • er-BAYN • adjective Someone described as urbane is notably polite, confident, or polished in manner. Urbane is also used to describe things that are fashionable and somewhat formal. // "When did my willful, childish cousin turn into this urbane young artist greeting the guests at her opening reception?" wondered Elena. // We were impressed by the hotel's urbane sophistication. See the entry > Examples: "The classical-meets-country-house architecture offers a relaxed lifestyle fused with urbane glamour and a thoroughly modern slate of creature comforts." — Mark David, Robb Report, 18 June 2024 Did you know? City slickers and country folk have long debated whether life is better in town or in the wide-open spaces, and urbane is a term that springs from the throes of that debate. In its earliest English uses, urbane was synonymous with its close relative urban ("of, relating to, characteristic of, or constituting a city"). Both words come from the Latin adjective urbanus ("urban, urbane"), which in turn comes from urbs, meaning "city." The modern sense of urbane developed from the belief (no doubt fostered by cosmopolitan city dwellers) that living in the city made one more suave and polished than did leading a rural life.

Bal Folk: Vom französischen Hof in die urbane Alternativszene

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 20, 2024 33:21

There is no harder job than being a parent. Add to that the conflicting societal stresses put on women about who they "should" be, and you get a real need for a mentor. Everyone has their own thought, suggestions, and recommendations on how to raise your kid. Most of this is based on either how they were raised themselves, a book they read, or how they raise their own children. And 90%+++ is garbage. It doesn't reflect YOUR child, or YOUR household. Jill Urbane is an actual expert with actual training who works with parents to cut through the noise, cut through the drama and find ways of improving things for their actual household. She's the bestfriend every mom needs. Jill will come to you live via Zoom to help, but she's also got a wealth of free resources available to help anyone who needs it. This was one of the most insightful and interesting guests I have had on this show, which makes it one of the most powerful and epic episodes. We Interviewed Mr. Malik Waseem Shuler, CEO if Urbane Society located in L.A. USA. Malik is originally from Washington D.C. where his family still lives, went to college and lived in New York City and currently resides and run a successful business with the potential to explode. The interview was full of staples that you may find useful as you start or grow you business or if you're interested in exploring how work, life and society is changing in America from the perspective of a Gen Z or post-Millennial. But every perspective and experience is worth sharing and exploring as one may find vital information that is indispensable for one's own growth and reflections as we seek balance and purpose in life so as to advance human society towards progress and preserving the vitality of live. Questions We Raised and Considered on the episode with Malik: 1. What's the difference between the generations? Gen X, Millennials, and Gen Z in relation to work? How is New York Changing? 2. What is so special about L.A.? 3. How did growing up in D.C. influence your business decisions? 4. What are some of the main challenges faced when starting out, what lessons did you learn and how have you adjusted your approach to the business? 5. Capitalists are always seeking cheap labor to cut costs and to lower price, but how do stay true to your ethos & pathos of wanting to promote & preserve the local (made in America) when people do not want to buy expensive goods, (how do you bridge the gap between what people want to pay and wanting to make your products locally or in China)? 6. Do you think Presidents help to set the foregoing tone of the country, from the Obamas to Trump etc.? 7. What's the philosophy of Urbane Society? 8. The Gen Z's are making money and are willing to do so irrespective of what people think or what they have to do, so long as they don't have to work too hard; why is this so? Is it because the ideologies, dogmas & rules that were once important aren't or is it something else? 9. Where are the workers? The Episode interview explores these issues, but is broken up in several segments with music, interlude sounds and Segway in between the main segments. The first segments contains the introductions a breaking news, where we announce the passing of Queen Elizabeth of Great Britain, the longest serving Monarch of that country. We then go straight into the interview which you will find deep and extremely interesting and insightful. You can Visit the Urbane Society's page to learn more about them at https://urbanesociety.us. Jill Urbane is a Parent Educator, Social Worker who works with families with young children. As a home visitor for almost 30 years, First and foremost, I am a wife and mother of two fantastic children. I, like so many others, am a working mom who is trying to figure out how to raise a happy family while keeping my own sanity. My undergraduate degree in psychology and masters degree in social work have done little to help me figure this out. Don't get me wrong, I learned a lot about family dynamics, personality development, etc., but there is no coursework on how to raise children or how to maintain a happy marriage. This learning is done by trial and error. As a result, the bulk of my experience in the area of raising children has come from my own life and ten plus years of being in the homes of families dealing with the same struggles. I see myself in every parent who asks me "what do I do to deal with ___________?" (fill in the blank yourself) My actual work experience includes: 1) working in a psychiatric unit; 2) working as a prison counselor with adult male offenders (you know, murderers and rapists); 3) as a Children's Protective Services worker; and 4) as an Early Childhood Interventionist for a school system. Needless to say, I have seen and heard it all when it comes to family dysfunction and personal crisis. Working with people in crisis has taught me that with the right support and someone who cares, even the most insurmountable obstacles and personal tragedies can be overcome. While I have enjoyed all my former work experiences, I must say that I most enjoy working with parents. Perhaps it is because we have what I believe is the most important job on earth: to raise healthy, happy, and responsible children. I also know that times have changed and we face MANY more obstacles than our parents did. I hope to empower parents with support, humor and guidance to find the parenting tools that work for them and their children. All parents have the ability to turn their ordinary family into an extraordinary family, but sometimes we need a little help along the way to figure that out. #spirituality #parenting #purpose #clarity #mentalhealth #trauma #raisingkids #mentalhealth #energy #source #parentingwithpurpose

The famous Alyque Padamsee said that Mahesh Dattani "...had given 60 million English-speaking Indians an identity."Padamsee's trenchant comment holds much in store. Most Indians who were educated in English became—through literature mostly—comfortable in our bilingual skin; multilingual, even. And Indian at heart. In India, English is not merely a functional tool for administration and management for many. It is lingua franca for a number of urban Indians...a first language, while the mother tongue remains the language in which we best express our emotions. But because entertainment, such as theatre, is an emotional vector, Indian languages flourished as the principle vehicles for stories.Sometime in the 70s, Mahesh marvelled as a Prithvi Theatre audience connected easily,  sensitively—and vocally—with a regional language play. Mahesh Dattani's audiences had connected with his  productions...but only intellectually, not with the emotion and feeling they reserved for the language in which they expressed happiness and pain.So Mahesh started to write plays. He writes in English and he tells urban Indian tales. And thus, he brought English-speaking India into the English language theatre 2.0—with neither artifice nor pretension nor the glorification of mediocre lives. Mahesh's characters are as real as your beloved though flawed uncle. Not since RK Narayan... and all that. And none, to our knowledge that have followed in as prolific and as competent a manner.Mahesh Dattani's plays have been published as books and are widely available. These are links to some of his more recent works.
