If you’ve spent much time in the gym (especially CrossFit gyms), you may have seen someone pushing a huge, weighted sled across the turf. By the end of it, they’re gasping for air and all they’ve done is move a bunch of weight from one side of the room to the other. What are they up to? Are they training to be one of Santa’s reindeer? Or is this an almost-too-obvious exercise for unlocking massive strength potential? The truth is, there’s no shortage of people doing unconscionable, foolish things in the gym, so is this one of them? I haven’t done much sled pushing or pulling in my day, so I invited an expert onto the podcast to tell us all about it. That expert is John Welbourn, who spent 9 years as a starter in the NFL and is the CEO of Power Athlete Inc., a strength and performance company that specializes in large group training sessions. He was also the architect of the CrossFit Football program, which was the main reason CrossFit began focusing on strength and performance. So, he knows a thing or two about training really strong people. In this episode, John and I chat about . . . Why the Prowler sled is good for you Core strength versus trunk stability How to program sled pushes and pulls The importance of building aerobic capacity Why having good conditioning is beneficial for strength training The value of varying intensity in your workouts And more . . . So if you want to know if you should be adding sled exercises to your workouts and how to do so, listen to this episode! 4:48 - Mike and John’s thoughts on Gavin Newsom’s handling of COVID-19 9:51 - Mike and John’s thoughts on Mark Rippetoe 12:20 - What is the value of pushing sleds? 20:54 - What type of workout is pushing and pulling sleds? How would you program that? Matt and Scott chat with John Welbourn, a 10-year NFL veteran (Eagles, Chiefs, Patriots) and an excellent strength and coaching coach as well. John's football career ended almost as soon as it started when he sustained a severe knee injury in the first game of his rookie season. Failing to find good training and rehab advice from the traditional medical and PT routes, John took his rehab into his own hands and sought advice from a number of progressively minded doctors and strength coaches. One particular coach, Charlie Francis, encouraged him to start aggressive electro-stimulation therapy (EMS) to regain function in his surgically repaired knee. Meanwhile he managed his diet carefully, and walked into the following season significantly bigger, stronger, and leaner -- weighing well over 300lbs at sub 10% bodyfat. Although it took another year to regain his speed and agility, the non-traditional rehab approach paid off, leading John to a decade long career before retiring in 2008. Following retirement, John founded his training company Power Athlete and began working with Greg Glassman to develop Crossfit Football, using a blend of classic barbell training, explosive movements, and high-intensity interval training to develop better football athletes. Since then he has continued to expand his knowledge and train a wide variety of athletes at Power Athlete HQ, where he offers private coaching, custom programming, nutrition guidance, and educational material for coaches. On Episode 180 of the Doc and Jock Podcast we are joined by Tex McQuilkin & Luke Summers to talk about why your warm-up SUCKS and why it needs to be better to perform better. The warm-up: how many of you skip this phase of your training? Or even worse just hit a couple rounds of Cindy or a casual assault bike ride and then get your barbell loaded and go? The sad truth is that most people & gyms put this amount of effort into their warm-ups and it is completely ruining workouts for athletes. Luckily for you we have Luke and Tex from Power Athlete HQ here to fix the problem. The boys just got done with their warm-up series for the CrossFit open workouts and now are working on gathering some seriously impressive data on how much better people perform with a legit warm-up. Now they are here to share the knowledge. Here are some topics we cover today: -Why the warm-up is the most important time for a coach -Heart rate > Iso-stability > Dynamics > Energy Systems for the Day > Limiting Factors & Attacking It: this is the warm-up process. What you need to know to program it. -Understanding the difference between warming up different modalities (olympic lifting v. a long metcon). We end this conversation with a left turn talking about athlete foot position for sport. If you aren't familiar with Tex here is his bio: Tex is a former collegiate lacrosse defensive midfielder, 4-year letter winner and 3-year team captain. Coached strength and conditioning collegiately with Georgetown University football, Men's and Women's lacrosse and Women's Crew, as well with the University of Texas at Austin's football program. Apprenticed under Raphael Ruiz of 1-FortyFour-1 studying proper implementation of science based, performance driven training systems. Head coached CrossFit Dupont's program for two years in Washington D.C. Received a Master's in Health Promotion Management from Marymount University in 2010, and has been a coach for Power Athlete since October, 2012. If you aren't familiar with Luke here is his bio: Luke has been training athletes in CrossFit, Weightlifting, and Olympic Lifting since 2007. He spent 6 years pushing pencils in “Corporate America,” spending 3 of those years moonlighting as a Strength & Conditioning Coach before and after work. Luke was an athlete his whole life and played multiple sports, but his primary focus was football. He played up through college until a neck injury forced him to hang it up. He travels with the CrossFit Football staff and has coaches a variety of athletes from amateur to professional levels in football, baseball, and track. Here is where to check out Luke & Tex #1. Since leaving the NFL, he started Crossfit Football and Power Athlete HQ. From the state of training, football and politics, Mark and John have a wide-ranging discussion with no holds barred. On Episode 106 of the Doc and Jock Podcast we welcome in our bro's Luke Summers & Tex McQuilkin from Power Athlete HQ & CrossFit Football. The guys are here to talk about a wide range of strength and conditioning topics, but most importantly they are here to talk about their involvement in Wade's Army. Neuroblastoma is the leading cancer in infants yet there is almost NO MONEY being given to help find a cure for this terrible disease. Wade's Army is on a mission to change that by raising money to help offset the out of pocket expenses for families and to help do more clinical trials. This year we are partnering with them to raise 5k and we need you guys to help us out by either donating here or sharing the message via social media.

This week Grant and Heavey discuss a listener question regarding training peaks and aging. Listener Ed has been following the CrossFit Football program, but has recently felt achy and slow. Wondering if this is due to his age, Ed requests advice on how he should adjust his training to continue seeing PR's. In response, Brandon dives into the nitty gritty of health vs performance, athletic peaking and training programs guided by individual goals. While sipping on Tx Blend Whiskey, Grant shares Brandon's greatest moment in Texas... involving a soft-serve machine and a restaurant-filled round of applause. With performance at the forefront, we see the emergence of Power Athlete HQ, a site continuing where CrossFit Football leaves off; as an online resource dedicated to providing coaches and athletes of various backgrounds comprehensive insight into meeting their training goals. From day one, CrossFit Football has had a singular focus to develop strength, speed, and athleticism in its power athletes. While fitness is just one component of athleticism, efficient movement and stability are paramount in sport. We strive for perfection of movement, strength of body and mind, and put an emphasis in training as we fight. Power Athlete HQ worked with thousands of athletes ranging from amateur to professionals and have decades of experience coaching and playing at professional levels. One thing is clear: in competition, very few rise to the occasion, the majority tend to fall to the level of their training. To account for this, we believe in the persistent pursuit of perfection with our athletes. The Power Athlete team is dedicated to providing relevant content to our followers with one goal in mind: creating strong, efficient, fast and most importantly, powerful athletes. Several months back the entire Barbell Shrugged crew called into the 50th episode of Power Athlete Radio. We had a blast chatting and bullshitting with the entire Crossfit Football crew, so I knew this interview with John Welbourn was going to be great. But I’ll be honest. I did forget just how big he is. At 6 ft 5 in and 310 lbs, this man is not your average Crossfit Coach. John reminds me of Tony Robbins’ larger, more athletic, Warrior/Mercenary brother. To borrow a phrase from the fantastic movie Shallow Hal, shaking that mitt of a hand really was like grabbing a bunch of bananas. Don’t get me wrong, there are some amazing people in the sport of fitness. Athlete’s are getting fitter by the day, while also getting strong enough to compete nationally as competitive lifters. That’s extraordinary. But that said, the world of the NFL is a few level’s up, to say the least. Just check out this video of John and his former colleagues warming up before a “WOD.” Your Fran time is awesome, dude, but I don’t think it’s going to be much help if you find yourself on the other side of the line from one of these real-life juggernauts. John was an incredible Football player, but he’s an even more impressive competitor. Did you know that he competed in the 2008 Crossfit Games? It’s True! You can see an old video on John WODing right here. That’s a super-duper impressive feat for a guy that large. “Why didn’t he lose some weight so that he could be more competitive,” you might ask. The answer is that he wasn’t done playing professional football yet! That’s right. He went off to training camp just a few weeks after the Games, which for lack of a better phrase, really takes balls. I really enjoyed talking with John. It brought back so many memories of my own career, which had many up’s and down’s, but was an amazing time in my life. Just in case you were wondering, no, I was no John Welbourn. Not even close. But I did alright, and I did it with a bitchin’ haircut. But I also wanted to thank him for showcasing the most important strength lesson in his Crossfit Football programming. That’s this, listen closely - If you want to get really strong and maximize your result, you have to train appropriately. I know, I know, the strongest people you can name train Westside, Smolov, Sheiko, whatever, so why not you? Why not do as the strong do? Well, because you have only been training a few years, not a decade or two. You don’t have the skill, the foundation, the muscle mass, or the recovery potential to take on such programming, so the only thing you’re going to get is frustrated, tired and hurt. The key to long lasting and enduring strength is to progress up to the intermediate and advanced levels ONLY WHEN IT IS REQUIRED! To be more specific, you should do the simplest possible thing until it stops working for you. Only then should you make things fancier and more complicated. That fundamental approach is baked right into John’s programming. If you are in need of some strength and power, but you also don’t want to give up an inch of your overall athleticism, you really can’t beat Crossfit Football. Give it a try, just be honest with yourself. Are you an Amateur, Collegiate, or Professional level athlete? You’ll truly know by the results you get. Be honest. For more information on Crossfit Football, make sure to check out their website for ton’s of cool training information and a full list of upcoming seminars. You can also follow all the latest from the Crossfit Football team on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook. Cheers, Chris
