Last week on episode 135 of the Corpus Animus Podcast, TTT Coaches Brannen Dorman & Kyle Ruth discussed ways to upgrade your endurance for CrossFit. During that episode we asked you to leave us some questions in the comments, and on this episode we dive and answer some. While the actual questions were more wordy, the basic gist of the questions are the following: What are some effective ways to improve endurance for CrossFit? Is there a specific formula for incorporating endurance training into a CrossFit program? How can I balance endurance training with other aspects of CrossFit? What are the key considerations when programming endurance workouts for CrossFit athletes? Should I prioritize long-duration workouts or focus on interval training for endurance? Are there any specific workouts or protocols that can help improve endurance for CrossFit competitions? How can I train for the unknown and varied nature of CrossFit? Is it beneficial to test and retest specific CrossFit workouts to measure progress? What are the details of the upcoming 12-mile ruck and how can I participate?

Paul DeAngelis joins today's episode of the Endurance Cartel Podcast to talk about the attitude and mentality one should have to engage in endurance sports such as mountain climbing or triathlons. He shares a great deal of knowledge and wisdom based on his experience and teaches us what to avoid when challenging ourselves.    Paul DeAngelis has committed his life to the promotion of health, well-being, and, most importantly, performance. Paul has prioritized training and education in his performance objective. He began coaching over 20 years ago because he is a firm believer in the POSE method's life-changing effects. His purpose as a coach is to motivate people to make positive changes in their lives, and he discovered that the POSE technique is ideal for people of all ages and abilities.   Paul believes in sport psychology; perceptual development and psychical training are critical to the success of any program. He fosters a positive environment to assist individuals in overcoming self-doubt or perceived limits and reaching their full potential. Paul has also travelled the world with the CrossFit Endurance certification team, teaching other coaches about good running mechanics, nutrition, injury avoidance, and programming. In addition, he uses the power of his motivational speeches to encourage and influence people in the health and wellness sector.   He is a skilled mountaineer with prior experience leading and handling tough logistics. He has an extraordinary capacity to inspire various groups and bring about constructive change. Never one to rest on his laurels or get comfortable in his pursuits, Paul has added designations to his name and has taken several disciplines to guarantee he can provide premium quality teaching to his pupils.   In today's episode: (01:35): Our guest Paul Deangelis coach, professional climber, and endurance enthusiast. (03:45): What brought Paul back from Canada to Costa Rica? (07:00): Javier goes down the memory line with Paul and remembers some amazing moments they had together. (09:50): Where do we have to start to engage in activities such as mountain climbing? (15:00): How mountain climbing can complete an athlete's form and enhance their performance. (17:00): The difference between risk-taking and risk management. (20:00): The mindset that made Paul Deangelis and the mental component necessary for Mountain Climbing. (25:00): The importance of training in nature when the conditions are harsh. (31:00): The real purpose of training for Mountain Climbing and how it should outweigh the climbing itself. (34:55): Paul's experience as a guide on Mount Everest and the critical situations he witnessed. (40:15): Paul shares with us the attitude and mentality of a good coach and guide. (46:30): The process with which Paul trains his apprentice hikers. (51:00): The importance of group dynamics in mountain climbing. (57:40): How Paul handles stress and panic when hiking with a group. (01:03:30): How to deal with mistakes and failures. (01:08:20): The moment endurance sports made Paul feel superhuman. (01:13:05): The person that inspired Paul to go the extra mile in his journey. (01:17:17): Paul shares a good piece of advice with us.   Quotes:   “Some people contact me to climb the highest mountains and that becomes a trophy case to them…In our consumer work here it's the more things I achieve, the better it makes me feel. That's a troublesome group because they are not doing it for authentic reasons so to speak…”   “Part of the journey in mountain climbing is finding who you are in the middle of a journey.”   “There is a second group of people that contact and want to do it because they want to know who they are…and that's amazing…They come to me with something not going right in their life and with a need to be exposed to nature so they can think.”   “My process was: When the shit hits the fan I would get myself up and I would go outside and train…I always love to train when the weather is harsh because…We have these perfectly heated gyms with perfect machines to work with while the world is not that perfectly adjusted.”   “If anyone has ever climbed at altitude, it's almost like you're drunk or hangover. We tried to simulate that when we trained with a 150-pound backpack on Olympic stairs by drinking mixed shots of liquor.”   “We wanted to stop, curl up and go to sleep all the time, we puked all the time, but that's how we trained and enhanced our performance.”   “We have to recognize when to call it a day in front of danger…When all of these bad things happen in mountain climbing I bring my clients down. So instead of having that trophy on his belt, he has his life now as opposed to 20 people that died that year.”   “People today use their technology to swipe and scroll and mindlessly go through things, and that's why they want this immediate gratification when engaging in a challenge. People born in the era of the 60s or 70s had to work hard to achieve anything….We need to mix that mindset with the abundance of technology today.”   “You have got to be authentic to your why as it goes back to your vision as a coach and guide. If I would have taken anybody into the group just because of a price tag, how would my business have succeeded macro-wise?”   “Everybody has a plan until you get punched in the face, and it's all about how you still manage to get up and keep moving forward.”   “When making a mistake, It's only over when you choose to stop. If you keep moving forward, you're not failing man. You keep learning about yourself.”   “We all go through points in our life when we have to rely on people, and that's where mentors and friends come into play. When you can find your tribe, you can be a stronger person.”   “It all comes down to simplicity in life. When you reach for simplicity, you have clarity.”   Links selected from this episode Ironman: An Ironman Triathlon is one of the World Triathlon Corporation's (WTC) series of long-distance triathlon competitions, consisting of a 2.4-mile (3.9 km) swim, a 112-mile (180.2 km) bicycle ride, and a marathon 26.22-mile (42.2 km) run conducted in that sequence, for a total of 140.6 miles (226.3 km). In this episode, I have human performance specialist,  former colleague,  and good friend Brian Mackenzie. We revisit his days at Crossfit, first as CrossFit Endurance and then his books PowerSpeedEndurance, Unbreakable Runner and Unplugged. Brian and Co. then focused on shifting the paradigm in training and preparation for endurance events and then expanding the skill first message throughout the world of human performance. SHIFT works with professional athletes, Fortune 500 executives, tactical personnel, and everyday people like us became an amazing lab for understanding how stress and our relationship with it shape human behavior. SHIFT's search for the most universal performance enhancement tool available led us down the rabbit hole of breathwork and ultimately resulted in the creation of the Art of Breath seminar series. The Art of Breath was designed to break down traditional silos in breathwork practices and make this amazing tool available to anybody regardless of the entry point.  Breath control is an incredibly powerful tool for improving resilience and enhancing performance for every living human on the planet.  Our journey traveling and developing this seminar highlighted a simple fact-people, even the highest performers on Earth manage stress poorly. In a world that can't agree on much these days, we believe both the CFE method and the LSD method are awesome - as long as your movement is high quality, you're injury-free, and you're getting a good amount of enjoyment from your training.⁣ ⁣ Listen to the podcast to hear a thorough examination of both sides of the weight debate, some relentless mythbusting, and some principles to consider if you're thinking about switching up your training to include weight work. ⁣ ⁣ We enjoyed this one - hope you do too. -Sam and Laura Join our Facebook community at https://www.facebook.com/groups/strongenduranceathletesunite/ For more information on Brian Mackenzie, go to https://powerspeedendurance.com/ For more information on Matt Fitzgerald and the 80/20 method, go to https://www.8020endurance.com/ For some background on the weight debate, see this RW article: https://www.runnersworld.com/uk/training/a26626352/can-weights-replace-mileage/

This week we share our conversation with Brian Mackenzie.Brian is part of a select group of coaches who were involved in the early days of Crossfit and beyond. Brian has dabbled in ultra endurance events and worked with his a wife Erin Cafaro MacKenzie a two time Olympic Gold Medalist in Rowing on preparing for the 2012 Olympic Games in London.More recently he has become heavily involved in the importance of breathing for performance and as a byproduct health. He is working with some of the worlds leading athletes whilst researching and developing protocols to harness the benefits of breathing for boosting performance. What strikes a chord with Chris and I are the philosophical nature of Brian and others in his position. I am not sure if developing an understanding of the mechanics of breathing and its benefits creates this or simply a matter of time in the game. Most likely both.Having worked with some of the worlds best to achieve the impossible, Brian has a unique view of the world and takes this approach to his research and coaching. His interest lies in the principles of performance rather than the dogma of a specific practice, his goal is to understand just what this being (our bodies) are capable of and breathing is a direct measure of this.As we witness a boom in the number of breathing coaches around the world, it interests us that there are many different methods which people align themselves to and often as is the case with most things, believe their way is the best way. Yet there is no right way, other than following your own path combined with an understanding of the principles and this goes for breath. When we understand the principles, are open to learn and able to learn and in the same breath unlearn our old ideas, that is freedom and that freedom unlocks our potential. As always this life is a process, and you have to have skin in the game to make the progress you know you can make. There are some gems in this one, so have your notebooks ready and enjoy. You can follow Brian @_brianmackenzie and his program @powerspeedendurance

This show is about rethinking the basic notions of athletic training, particularly the ‘no pain no gain’ model that’s been widely criticized but is still embedded into DNA of many endurance athletes. Brad offers insights from four experts that may just blow your mind and get you to make some changes in your schedule that can lead to big improvements, and reduced risk of overtraining, illness, injury and burnout. These insights place particular emphasis on the recovery aspect of peak performance, something that has been overlooked or taken for granted by hard-charging endurance athletes. It's time to wake up and implement an evolved approach to your endurance goals, with help from four great thought leaders Brad discusses in this show. Some brief highlights:   Dr. Phil Maffetone: Honor MAF heart rate and emphasize aerobic development. Never exceed 90% of max heart rate during high intensity sessions.    Brian MacKenzie: The Power, Speed, Endurance guru and founder of Crossfit Endurance is now obsessed with recovery as the next evolution of athletic training--stuff like breathing practice, and hot and cold therapy!    Joel Jamieson: Joel's Rebound Workouts entail doing a focused protocol of movements that can actually help speed recovery by stimulating parasympathetic activity. The workout includes breathing, stretching, mobility/range of motion exercise, doing positive lifts only (dropping the weight after lifting to avoid eccentric), and doing very short intervals with mindful heart rate lowering during long recovery periods. Craig Marker: Craig and Pavel Tsatsouline of StrongFirst and StrongEndurance suggest that the popular HIIT training is inferior to High-Intensity Repeat Training, where you rest long enough to deliver consistent high-quality efforts and don't get exhausted by the end. Whether you are a casual or serious endurance athlete, this show can transform your approach to sport, improving performance and reducing the risk of burnout. Listen to this show like your life depends upon it! Brad reviews the most important insights gathered from his interviews with these experts. Dr. Phil Maffetone: It's so important to get this out there: The Maffetone formula is 180 minus your age in beats per minute is the maximum fat-burning point that should be the goal of all people interested in maintaining the best training and fitness. [00:03:36]  You need not ever exceed 90 percent of your maximum heart rate even during the most intense and explosive training sessions. [00:06:26]  Brian MacKenzie, Founder of CrossFit: Breathing, Recovery, Training, Strength and Conditioning, Endurance, Sports Programming, Mechanics, Injuries, Nutrition, and Sleep Analysis are the pieces he puts together to create the total athlete. [00:10:31]  The Ice Man, Wim Hof, trains people to overcome the resistance to cold with his breathing protocols. [00:14:57]  Joel Jamison offers ground-breaking insights: Emphasis is on recovery-based training methods (rebound workouts). Those are the sessions you perform when you are trying to recover. [00:18:07]  Craig Marker, StrongFirst.com: Recommends High-Intensity Repeat Training which is to make the effort, rest for sufficient duration in terms of the quality of the effort.  [00:22:59]  Four sprints and rest combo works the best for Brad. Focus on quality. [00:28:16]   You can apply this same mentality no matter what your sport. The maximum sustained power session vs. the fatiguing session is important to understand. The NativePath is a journey; it's an invitation to go down a journey to reclaim your health and remember who you really are. As a species and an individual, we've forgotten who we are because we've been brought into this world where we've been given a name and a label. We're taught who we are as far as race, political ideology, or religion and we get caught up in those things. We also might get caught up in our diseases and think that's who we are. Eventually, all of this starts to manifest itself as a little voice inside our heads. So at NativePath, we're trying to remove all of that and give people a way out so they can realize that they're the creator of their life. - Dr. Chad Walding JOIN THE FACEBOOK GROUP | REVIEW THIS PODCAST  20% OFF ORGANIFI - USE CODE: WELLNESSFORCE What is the key to staying curious about your own mental, physical, and spiritual wellness?  In Wellness Force Radio episode 211, physical therapist; health and wellness Entrepreneur; and Co-Founder of Lexicon Health including the brands: NativePath, Sitting Solution, and Paleo Secret, Dr. Chad Walding uncovers the different levels of depression and anxiety that can vary from person to person; how sitting not only affects our body, but mind as well; and the relationship between being healthy and having a supportive community. Find out how you can get on the right path to discovering what will fulfill you today, tomorrow, and for the rest of your life. "These experiences and things that happen to us, they're actually an opportunity for us to grow. They make us more resilient, stronger and connect us to who we really are. There's an infinite potential to what we can learn about ourselves." - @PaleoSecret http://bit.ly/wfpodcast NativePath is the culmination of over 50+ years of experience in studying human health. We are on a mission to return human health and vitality by changing the way we eat, move, think and live. From home health care for patients ravaged by degenerative neurological and chronic disease all the way to the coaching of elite athletes, we have seen a clear pattern—how people eat, think and move affects everything. Immune function, energy levels, mood, body composition, skin, longevity, you name it. We have seen what many may consider miracles of healing – disease reversed, health and vitality regained, the opportunity to live a fully functional life that we all deserve. Through this experience, we bring products and services that provide the framework for humans to return to their native health and natural way of being.   Listen To Episode 211 As Dr. Chad Walding Uncovers: The sitting cycle we've become so accustomed to which actually impacts us on a deep, spiritual level. His childhood and how the high levels of emotional anger in his home environment affected both him and his brother. The adolescent and young adult depression he faced growing up. Generational depression and anxiety we could be experiencing without realizing it. His own struggles with self-love and feeling worthy. The different levels of depression and anxiety that can vary from person to person. Our search for life fulfillment and how he is able to fill that need through giving and learning. What he and the NativePath and Lexicon Health brands want to teach people about wellness. His own path towards coming aware of who he truly is despite all the labels, media, and his own ego telling him otherwise. How teaching about health and wellness throughout his community helped him realize his true purpose and shifted his paradigm. His regular practices including a daily intention of what he wants to accomplish in 90 days. Why we're all empaths no matter if we're actually paying attention to it or not. His relationship with his wife and how he knew he would marry her the moment he met her. The journey he and his wife went through when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. His future plans as he continues to help people become more aware of how they can focus on their own health. Why you have to meet people on their level in order to sell them what they want and give them what they need. The importance of community when helping people to focus on changing their life. What he's the most excited about for the future of health and wellness. Where our self-doubt comes from that is holding us back from living a healthy life. How we can be more intentional about watching TV, being on social media, and getting tasks done. Power Quotes From The Show "It's okay to have a difficult time trusting the process. It's okay if you're feeling those feelings and you're in a bad place. Just keep going strong and looking at yourself. Move forward and do the best you can. That's all you can do." - @PaleoSecret http://bit.ly/wfpodcast "We're on a mission to help the individual cultivate happiness, health, and kindness within themselves as well as spread those ideas to their community. We want to let people know that they were brought up in a world with a lot of toxicity - their food, the way they've been moving, and the thoughts they've been thinking have all been inherited but that's not who they are; they're not a victim and we're going to show them a way out. It's almost like we were born into a room with toxic perfume. The more time we spend in that room, the sooner we become desensitized to its toxicity. We're trying to get people out of that room to help them discover who they really are." - Dr. Chad Walding  "As someone who was working in the conventional healthcare system, I felt like I had no purpose. However, what that experience was doing was just showing me what's actually happening in healthcare and building up a desire to change something about it. That experience was exactly what I needed and it was my purpose even though I didn't know it was my purpose. Back then I didn't understand why I was in that situation but now I do." - Dr. Chad Walding  "I always try to live in a state of wonder. I literally wake up every day and say, 'May I be in a state of wonder?' I always wonder about other people and how they're doing, how things might be occurring to them, or even how the universe works. Our curiosity is quite infinite but that's what makes it fun. His latest area of emphasis has immense potential for our community and focuses on a topic rarely, if ever, discussed in the hunting world. This is a podcast you won’t want to miss.   As a human movement and performance expert Brian’s true specialty lies in finding unconventional, and often disruptive, solutions to impediments to achieving maximum potential, whatever your goal may be. My favorite aspect of this conversation was reflecting on the phenomenal documentary Torin Simpson produced called "The Story Of Nuno Costa". We discussed Nuno's journey from Portugal to the United States, overcoming alcohol and cocaine addiction, and coming out as a gay athlete when he wasn't sure he would always be accepted. How do you react when the carpet is pulled out from under you over and over? What does the internal self talk sound like? And how do you pursue change to fill the shoes you know you were meant to fill? Nuno Costa is one of the few athletes in the world who has competed in the CrossFit Games Affiliate Cup every year since it started in 2009. In 2014, he was apart of the winning team with Team Invictus and we wish him the best as he sets out to compete again this weekend. We talk about the role that sports have played in bringing out pure joy, emotion, and providing a sense of belonging.  He has been coaching CrossFit, running, and triathlon programs full time since 2008. One of the many areas we talk about include what it takes to make a living as a fitness professional in this industry. Nuno has been a head coach for CFHQ since the beginning of 2012 coaching Level 1 and Level 2 seminars all over the world. Nuno also coached the CrossFit Endurance seminars for over 5 years, traveling the world to train other coaches proper running and endurance training technique, nutrition, injury prevention and program design. As always, there are many twists and turns throughout the conversation. I walked away feeling really proud of this one. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did. We have a hard working and knowledgable personal trainer with us today.  His name is Guy Petruzzelli.  We will be talking about How to get back into the game to become the your healthiest. As a 43 year old professional  duathlete, who, at the age of 20, found a real passion for multi-sport, was forced to take some time away. I was hit by a car in 1996, leaving me rather injured and finding a comeback difficult. So I finished law school, passed the Illinois Bar exam and thought my time in the sport was over. In 2002, I was fortunate to have some close friends, who were concerned about my physical state, encourage me to get back into the sport. It wasn’t easy, but I came back to it with more desire, drive and passion. I worked hard under the coaching supervision of the great Jennifer Garrison, and in 2008 I was offered an opportunity to turn professional. It was a dream come true. I left law in 2009 to pursue my dream of being a professional multisport athlete and I have been blessed with the opportunity to do more with the sport, and meet a ton of great people along the way. As the 2010 season started to heat up in June, I was out for a training ride and once again, hit by a car. This time, I was left with a broken right collarbone and 3 broken ribs. My doctor insisted that even with surgery, I would miss the remainder of the season and would most likely not even be able to train hard until the start of 2011. I refused to believe that I would be limited for that long. So right after surgery I went to see Nate Aye and John Conquest at Crossfit DuPage. I was very honest about my goals as an athlete and the desire to be in the top tier of pro multisport athletes in 2011. They were very honest in turn, and made it clear – my goals were attainable, but it would take hard work and an open mind. From that day forward, I never looked back. A short 6 weeks later I met someone I knew would be a friend for life. Someone who was as driven as I was, constantly  challenging the norm, and believed that working smart was the key to success in multisport. Brian McKenzie from Crossfit Endurance opened my eyes to even more change to my training methods, breaking down old school endurance training ideology, improving my running form, and changing my mentality as how I approach training and racing. I was skeptical for the first hour I heard him talk, and then I watched as in less than 48 hours, I had improved my running efficiency by 53%. I was a believer. With Brian’s help, I was able to achieve 2 things in less than 5 weeks – continue to speed up my healing process, and improve fitness. When I went to see my doctor at week 9 post-surgery, the x-rays showed 90% bone growth, and I was cleared to race duathlons. But the most amazing part – my 5K time dropped, my LT wattage on the bike increased by 33% and I was 8 lbs. lighter than pre-accident. This wasn’t by accident; this was due to following Crossfit Strength and Crossfit Endurance principles. Best part, I’m still improving.  To spread the word of my recovery and passion, I was the focus of a Triathlete Magazine article in the February 2011 edition, written by TJ Murphy. I was then added to the book written by Brian MacKenzie in November 2012 – “Power, Speed, Endurance, a skill based approach to endurance training”, and featured in Chris Solomon’s article in the January 2013 issue of Outside Magazine, where Chris chronicles his use of Crossfit Endurance to train for a marathon.  To prove that I practice what I preach, I’ve been working with Cody Burhardt, head coach at Power Speed Endurance, to help me reach my current world rank of 11th in Duathlon. I’ve also appeared on the podcast www.athleteologist.com – episode 8,where I was able to share my story. facebook.com/guypetruzzelli twitter,com/guypetruzzelli instagram.com/guypetruzzelli www.guypetruzzelli.blogspot.com For additional podcast from Healthy Living With Eric Su visit www.ericwsu.com/podcasts.   Remember, Eric Su’s FREE Results Coaching Strategy session: www.ericwsu.com/freecoachingcall Watch Eric Su on Facebook Live.  Visit www.facebook.com/ericwsutrainer every Friday at 9:30am CST. Would you like to have more energy? Want to feel more alive? Need inspiration to go on your next adventure? If so, then this episode is for you... Investigative journalist Scott Carney thinks modern living has made us sick and weak..and he's found a solution for us. In his new book "What Doesn't Kill Us" Scott explores how people of the past were able to traverse great distances through extreme heat and cold without modern gear, and how today more and more people are regaining their ancestral strength by exposing themselves to the elements. On this episode Scott recounts his journey to Poland to study and train under the "Ice Man" Wim Hof - a man who has broken world records for being able to expose himself to ice and extremely cold temperatures for long periods of time.  He also explains how his training with Wim allowed him to climb Mount Kilimanjaro in 28 hours without acclimatization and how he later went on to train with Brian Mackenzie of Crossfit Endurance fame as well as big wave surfer Laird Hamilton.  And he didn't stop there. Taking the new skills he learned from Wim, Brian, and Laird, Scott went on to complete one of the coldest, toughest, obstacle course races in the world, changing his physique and mindset along the way. If you want to get stronger, have more energy and feel more alive - this episode is a must listen. Shownotes for this episode can be found at www.civilianstrong.com/005/

For those of you who don't know him, Brian is the founder of CrossFit Endurance, the author of Power, Speed, Endurance, and works with some of the top athletes in performance sport, such as CrossFit, surfing and endurance athletics.  We dropped into RVCA headquarters to chat with Brian about a performance metric that is so often not talked about, breath. We dive deep into how you can use breath as a tool to control the nervous system, and bring your training to the next level by simple learning how to tap into your breathing pattern We also get into how Brian is using things like ice bathes, sauna, and the unique combination of the two to control the body. We brought Brian on the show to chat about performance breathing, but naturally, we couldn't stop at that. We get into training philosophy, nature integration, and a bunch of topics to get your gears turning in a new way.

Please leave a review at http://www.openskyfitness.com/review   We had two special guests on this week's episode of the Open Sky Fitness Podcast. One of our previous guests, Evan Dollard, teamed up with Rob to talk to fellow extreme obstacle athlete, Hunter McIntyre. Evan was the 2008 male winner of American Gladiators and also competed on American Ninja Warrior 2. Hunter is Spartan Race Athlete and has been featured on the TV show, Boundless. Next up in both of their careers, they are participating in NBC's Summer Spartan Ultimate Challenge which begins airing on Monday, June 13th. Evan is the Field Reporter of the show while Hunter leads on one of the teams through the race as a Spartan Elite. We had an amazing time on the show while learning more about Hunter and his story about how he came to be a Spartan Athlete. It's a wild journey of how he evolved from being a mischievous high school kid to a logger and how that path eventually led him to become one of the world's best short course and long course extreme obstacle athletes. Hunter's story is truly inspiring and one of a kind. He also shared with us how participating in specific training events such as the SEALFIT Kokoro Camp really helped him mature and become the leader that he is today. About Hunter McIntyre Hunter possesses a unique and potent combination of strength and endurance. As an avid student of the Crossfit Endurance training method he’s successfully welded the physique and strength of a Crossfit competitor with the endurance of a marathon runner. Hunter AKA ‘The Sheriff” loves to perform with the showmanship of a WWF wrestler. He is, however, an inveterate lover of all things- particularly life. At the age of just 27 he’s already been a lumberjack in Montana, a party “enthusiast”, and a male model. His wild and crazy charisma shines, Hunter, was born to entertain! His passion for life is built around creating each day to be better than the day before. Hunter’s fanatical love for Obstacle Course Racing pushes him every day to the limits, while cultivating his goals of continuing to be the very best athlete the sport has to offer. Hunter inspires others to athleticism by demonstrating the sheer fun of life. Have a Question for Rob or Devon? We love answering questions and getting feedback from you, our listener! Brian Mackenzie from Crossfit Endurance is an expert in strength and conditioning for endurance athletes, and is the creator of CrossFit Endurance. He is a Level 3 CrossFit Certified Trainer, and is a Level 3 POSE Certified Running Coach. Brian has been working in the fitness industry to some degree for the last 20 years. He has an internship program for professional trainers. Brian has been at the pinnacle of training athletes and clients of all shape, size and ability for the last decade. Starting his training career as a physical therapy assistant and volunteering with adaptive PE programs for stroke victims, he has used the simplest to the most complex of modalities. Learning how to powerlift at an early age, Brian understood functional movement at the beginning of his career. Moving into the endurance world, he worked with Dr. Romanov (Creator of POSE Method of Running), and learned about running mechanics very early in his career. He has trained professional athletes from a multitude of sports including the NFL, MMA, and AVP, Running, Cycling, Swimming, and Celebrity. Brian has successfully used CrossFit as the cornerstone of his programming for endurance athletes, while supplementing with sport specific wods. His athletes train sometimes a third of what the norm train with superior results. Brian has been a competitive Ultra Runner. He competed in Ironman and more than 30 ultra marathons ranging from 50k to 100 miles including the Western States 100 and the Angeles Crest 100. During our interview, I ask Brian: -what is crossfit endurance, and how is it different than regular crossfit? -what principles do you use to guide workout design and programming? -can you walk us through a sample week of workouts? -how do you think crossfit endurance compares to the traditional method of triathlon training, and do you think someone could go faster in a triathlon with your method? -how do you reply to critics who argue that weight training does not benefit endurance athletes? First Name Last Name Email Cell # (1+area code)     --------------------------------------------------------------- Listener Q&A: ====================================== [contact-form 3 "AskBen"] ====================================== Gina has a call in question: I have a question about my 13 yr old daughter. She's a swimmer and practices 2 1/2 hrs 4 times/wk and attends meets 2 times/month. My daughter is 5 ft 3 inches and weighs 103#. She swims year round and is off 3 weeks in the fall and in the spring. I noticed during her fall/winter season, she was often sick, fatigued, and her swim times didn't improve. After evaluating her food intact, I noticed she was only eating about 20-30 grams of protein/day. She is a "picky" eater and prefers carbs over protein. I have since been pushing protein, but I'm having difficulties getting her to eat a variety of sources. She will eat chicken, turkey, and eggs. I've tried a variety of whey protein smoothes, but she doesn't like them. She takes a multi-vitamin. I will be changing her to one you recommend on your web site. How much protein should she be getting and are there any other supplements you think would be helpful for her? Lori asks: I've been observing a pattern in myself in the last few months concerning protein powders and I'm hoping you can help me make sense of this puzzle. I've noticed when I consume a protein shake containing whey that my blood sugar takes a dive within an hour and I have to eat something else. I've observed with any mix with whey in it. I currently have some Hammer whey and some Mt. Capra double bonded goat protein powder. On the other hand, if I consume a protein shake with other kinds of protein--and in this case I'm referring specifically to Living Fuel (which is brown rice and yellow pea protein) or Nutiva Hemp protein powder that I can potentially go 4-5 hours quite comfortably. I thought perhaps it was just what I was adding to the powder or when I was using it. In an effort to sort it out, in the last month I started to use all of the above (proteins) in the exact same way (after exercise,) and I kept the added ingredients that I added exactly the same--almond milk and frozen strawberries. I got the same results. Whey behaves like it is giving me a glycemic spike--even when consumed in those first 30 minutes after exercise. Does this mean I just don't do well with whey? What is going on here --I'm perplexed. Mike asks: Ben, you've mentioned that taking vitamin supplements near the time of drinking coffee can reduce the affects. How long before or after drinking coffee should one take supplements to get the most benefit. In my response to Mike, I recommend reading http://www.pacificfit.net/coffee.php Rebecca asks: I recently listened to one of your podcasts where talked about the negative affects of hormonal birth control.I have seriously been thinking about switching to a non-hormonal IUD because I think being on the pill has been hindering my ability to lose weight. In your experience, how much easier is it to lose weight being off of hormonal birth control? Also what is your opinion of non-hormonal IUDs? Bill asks: I've listed to a number of your podcasts (which are excellent!) and hoping you can advise me on how best to lose approx 10 lbs over the next 2-3 months before I enter my build up phase for my next Ironman (IM WA  in December).   I'm 6'2"; 185 lbs and 48 yrs old.  The area I'd like to target is stomach and thighs.  I' recently started changing my diet to reduce intake of sugar; whites and processed foods and reduce on carbs in evening meal to reduce insulin response.  Your advise/tips would be greatly appreciated. In my response to Bill, I recommend he: -Go to the upper right corner of http://www.bengreenfieldfitness.com -Do search for "fat loss video" -Access the top 3 results Mike Burns asks: I was wondering if you might be able to help me. I get pain on the inside of my forearm, just above the elbow when I use the preacher curl machine at the gym. It feels more like stop doing what your doing pain, rather then muscles being worked pain. The machine has stationary handles so I can't adjust the way my wrists are turned. I can do concentration curls with dumbbells, and curls with the cable machine with no problems. Should I just avoid the preacher curl machine from now on? Etana asks: I'm a vegan Ben. Some vegetarian vegan products such as cheese have casein in them. Am I cheating on my vegan diet by consuming dairy subsitute products such as "dairy free" cheese and coffee creamer by consuming products with casein in them? It's hard to find dairy free products without casein, a milk derivitive. Craig asks: What do you think of Dr. Romanov's Pose method of Triathlon? I've been a Pose runner for years but I'd love to hear your take in it. Finally, Luke Powell calls in with a testimonial about the Triathlon Dominator. -------------------------------------------- Remember, if you have any trouble listening, downloading, or transferring to your mp3 player just e-mail ben@bengreenfieldfitness.com And don't forget to leave the podcast a ranking in iTunes - it only takes 2 minutes of your time and helps grow our healthy community! The B.rad Podcast

Brian is the co-author of an epic textbook on training titled Power, Speed, Endurance , and the New York Times bestseller, Unbreakable Runner. As the founder of the CrossFit Endurance movement, Brian gained notoriety for challenging the dated conventional endurance wisdom of a mileage obsessed, “more is better” approach. Brian’s comprehensive program blending traditional aerobic mileage with varied forms of explosive strength training, flexibility/mobility work (he’s a close associate of MobilityWOD.com and Becoming a Supple Leopard author Dr. Kelly Starrett), breath work and recovery has busted the boundaries and barriers of the old school approach. Brian has occasionally faced challenges and controversy by those favoring status quo. Consider this salacious magazine article title from Outside magazine in 2013: “Brian MacKenzie's Controversial New Approach to Marathon Training: The mastermind behind CrossFit Endurance says the best way to train for a marathon is to run less and torture yourself more in the gym.” Well, it’s not nearly as simple and crude as the frequently referenced juxtaposition of “quantity versus quality” suggests. It’s now becoming clear that chronic cardio is not only ineffective but can also destroy your health. Furthermore, it’s also evident that endurance athletes are deficient in many areas of general fitness, especially preserving efficient technique as they become fatigued. If your low back and hip flexors get cooked at mile 20 of a marathon (because, for argument’s sake, that’s a butt-long way and you’ve perhaps never run further than that in training), some of the energy your cardiovascular machine is still able to produce for the final six-mile slog is wasted. Instead of maintaining a balanced center of gravity and generative efficient explosive force with each stride, you center of gravity caves and you collapse a bit into the ground on each stride. This is where the explosive training goes in. Loading a squat bar with weight, running sprints or performing any other explosive efforts is in many respects simulating what happens to your body at mile 20, but without having to exhaust yourself by running the first 20 miles in training before obtaining that desired breakthrough adaptation. Explosive work is not an endurance “hack” (you will never hear Brad use that word on this show or in life, ever). Rather, it’s adding a critically important training modality to your game in order to best prepare your body for daunting competitive challenges without falling apart. With Brian passionately advocating to expand our training consciousness, he has come off as an intense guy, which he is. After all, that’s him sprinting in Tim Ferriss’s epic Four Hour Body book trailer and his thumbnail image with his individual finger tattoos spelling “U-N-S-C-A-R-E-D.” What was cool in meeting Brian person was how thoughtful and chill he is. The conversation went off into the metaphysical and reflective direction instead of just going into his boiler plate PowerSpeedEndurance message. Brian starts by discussing the perspective he has gained from his recent terrible accident, surgery, and recovery process, gives a refreshingly expanded perspective of the dated and oversimplified quality versus quantity debate, countering the “more is better” mentality with the priceless maxim, “Better is Better.” Perhaps the best takeaway from the show is Brian’s emphasis that the next evolution in human performance will come in the area of recovery, and complementary practices such as breathing, cold therapy, and heat therapy, of which he is super focused on these days. The B.rad Podcast

(Breather) Lots of great stuff to cover today as I continue to go through all of the great questions you’ve submitted so far. We start with a question from a listener who challenges me to name the many things that I find more important to endurance success than the particulars of workouts and scheduling, so I spout 7 things quickly in response. I then share from recent success stories, including improved sleep from honoring digestive circadian rhythm and improving inflammatory conditions with dietary restriction. And what kind of dietary restriction do I mean, exactly? Well...of course, it all depends on the individual. For some people, that means eliminating certain foods that trigger inflammation. But for others, it just means working on timing and adjusting the way you schedule your meals, but not changing anything about the food itself - just switching to eating earlier dinners, for example. I also stress the importance of cultivating your intuition (in all areas of life, duh) when it comes to fitness and diet. Knowing how to employ your intuition will always serve you well because it allows you to go with the natural flow of things. So instead of forcing strict, regimented workouts set at specific times on yourself, try to balance honoring your commitments with an understanding and respect for your body’s natural needs, which are for rest and relaxation, balanced with a healthy exercise regimen. I then explain how to reconcile the seemingly disparate training approaches of aerobic-based versus explosive efforts found in a Crossfit Endurance workout (listen to my show with Brian MacKenzie for more details). I also talk about how consuming lectins may be triggering inflammation that worsens skin-conditions, like vitiligo, and how the elimination of night-shades can help with this problem. As I get down to the last few questions, I realize how many of them have had a similar theme, which is balance. How do you balance intuition with a set schedule? How can you begin to manage stress and rest most effectively? And how do you reconcile two diametrically opposed perspectives, like Primal Endurance vs CrossFit endurance? How do we move forward when there are things in our life that seem to contradict each other, or when we don’t quite know how to proceed? We get over ourselves and our negative internal chatter, and remember the importance of having a healthy perspective! Take advantage of support from your community, from your family to your friends, to your colleagues to your neighbors, because that’s what makes all the difference in the world in terms of your performance and your mindset. Just don’t get caught in the trap of stressing about not doing enough. We’re all doing the best we can (and if you’re not, simply recognize it, and make adjustments!) so, remember the importance of continuously committing to BALANCE. There is a time for action, just as there is a time for prioritizing resting and recovery. Do yourself a favor, and let yourself fully experience the benefits of both. Thanks for the thought-provoking questions! Keep ‘em coming by emailing getoveryourselfpodcast@gmail.com. *TIMESTAMPS:* David is asking about workout scheduling. What is the order of importance?  [03:57] It interferes with our circadian rhythms to have this constant technology available. [05:30] Stress/rest management is so important for a balanced life, especially for an athlete. [07:13] Have a healthy perspective on setting goals. [08:22] Having a supportive family, community environment, or training partners makes your training more doable. [09:50] Cultivate intuition over a regimented schedule. [11:17j Think about the “breakthrough workout.” It should be the centerpiece of your training. [12:10] Morning flexibility routine keeps Brad in a stronger position to do other things the rest of the day. [13:04] Clean up your diet. [14:42] Ward is telling about what he discovered that, despite going keto, carnivore, changing sleep hygiene, he was still having disturbed sleep. *The timing of eating was the secret*. [16:46] Felix is asking about the skin disease of vitiligo which is believed to be caused by an intolerance to lectins. Eliminating nightshade vegetables from the diet can help with many conditions. [21:15] The next question is how does a middle-aged novice trainee reconcile two diametrically opposed viewpoints like Primal Endurance vs CrossFit endurance? [24:51] The two viewpoints go hand in hand, but the emphasis needs to be rest and recovery.
