“We like to say heart rate variability is the range of motion of your nervous system,” Lindsey Mathews, DC, says. Put another way, heart rate variability (HRV), or the variance in time between the beats of your heart, can provide insight into how your body is responding to the many different stressors in life. This is a valuable tool to help guide women's training through pregnancy and postpartum. When HRV is low, it opens up a conversation on what other life stressors are going on and indicates a need to reduce training load. When HRV is stable or trending upwards, pregnant and postpartum women can use it as an opportunity to push training a little bit harder within the parameters of what is safe for their pregnancy. HRV values are individually unique, but by establishing a personal baseline, women can bring awareness to how different lifestyle factors impact their physical readiness. They can then use this knowledge to inform training throughout their pregnancy and postpartum. We've received so many questions regarding cost of birth, whether that's home vs hospital, midwife costs, doula costs, etc. Your three hosts break in down in their specific areas and get this conversation started!
In today’s episode, Darcy spoke with Lindsey Mathews, the founder and CEO of BirthFit. Lindsey is also a Doctor of Chiropractic, Birth Doula, Strength and Conditioning Coach, NLP Practitioner and a Yoga Instructor. BirthFit is a revolutionary company that supports and educates women throughout their transition into motherhood. With an array of online and in-person programs, experiences, and workshops, BirthFit strives to give women access to free information so they can make informed decisions regarding their pregnancy. Lindsey was inspired to create BirthFit when she realized that the medical community wasn’t giving parents necessary information and emotional support throughout their pregnancy. Key Takeaway: Pregnancy is not a time to sit back and rely solely on the medical establishment. It’s a time to get to know more holistic and healing practices and learn to listen to your body’s innate wisdom. Highlights: Birthfit is a company that seeks to educate and empower people with both online and in-person programs and experiences surrounding pregnancy and birth. When it comes to pregnancy and birth, there is a whole world of information that people don’t have access to. To gain access to all the information out there, parents need to search for it online and in their community, not just rely on what they hear in hospital settings. Our society programs women to view birth as scary and painful, but in reality giving birth can be a strong and empowering experience. Society is often so focused on what’s good for the baby, we forget to ask about what’s good for the mother and her body, especially postpartum. Women get little time to recover from giving birth, especially when compared to the average healing time for a typical surgery. Don’t feel ashamed to take the first year to heal and reconnect with your body after giving birth. After giving birth, the birthing parents health is often disregarded. In order to remedy this, Birthfit created classes that allow new parents to get back in touch with their needs and wants. This weeks episode is with Jeremy Brook, aka SpineChecker. We are talking health, but not in the way of what to eat to be healthy.Health is the underlying reason why we move these days, it isn't so much to escape predators and yet so many people walk around in a sub optimal state of health, hovering just north of being ok with no obvious illness, condition or worse.Health comes down to a personal philosophy and paradigm. Are you pro active or reactive in your approach to health? Most people are ok with being one step above zero. Our bodies as we are learning more and more tell us exactly what we need to know about how we are running.Whether we listen, want to listen or take the time to check in with ourselves is another matter. Today we catch up with Jeremy Brook who me met in the tight knit community that is Deuce Gym in LA. He goes by the moniker on instagram as Spinechecker and yes he looks after not just the spine but the entire body as a forward thinking chiropractor. And following in the path of the conversations we have had with Tony Molina of the Rewire Project, Lindsey Mathews at Birthfit, there is more to the body than just what we see.Jeremy sees the body as an interconnected network, where the muscles in our body between 6-800 depending on our make up can be considered 1, whilst our skeletal system floats amongst these and fascia weaves its way through everything. Understanding that the body is a whole changes the way health is approached, nothing is in isolation and everything is connected. There are many more health wizards we want to speak with to continue the connection of dots for us all to become inquisitive and really get the most out of what we are born with. As Jeremy says we are 100% potential it just needs to be activated.
Hey there and welcome to Thoughts On, the short form weMove podcast where we expand on themes from our weekly podcast topic. This time reflecting on our conversation with Lindsey Mathews the founder of BIrthfit here we talke about the Complete Human experience that is birth, how we can support mothers to give birth and transition forward with this next level of strength that women have. To get another perspective we asked Sophie Whippy who is experiencing the motherhood transition from all angles as co founder of Londons Stretch Yoga studios, a doula herself and mum to two great young dudes on her experience as a mum, a yoga teacher and a doula. There is so much we as a culture have to learn in many areas and certainly as a guy and now a father, I want to understand more about the motherhood transition to share via this platform and increase the conversation amongst women and men about how to celebrate the strength of the human body. You can follow sophie on instagram @sophiewhippy and @stretch_london

This week’s guest is Dr. Lindsey Mathews of BIRTHFIT and Deuce Gym and every coach, CrossFit, Strength Training, or otherwise needs to hear this conversation and learn more from Lindsey. We cover a number of topics starting with our primal movement patters and how they relate to our social development. We then explore the training approach, a functional progression, during the different phases of the motherhood transition for preconception, during, and postpartum including importance of embracing load, planes of motion and energy systems. Additionally, touch on the value of mindset, how to view obstacles in a different manner, with closing on how BIRTHFIT is providing the proper support and coaching for a grossly underserved population for both women and their partners experiencing the motherhood transition.
