Uma de suas canções, "Why Should the Devil Have All the Good Music?" --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/pocast-podcast/message

Well, at least they didn't hate the film as much as they thought they would. In this follow-up episode to their discussion on praise and worship music, Tim and Ray review the latest documentary on contemporary Christian music, The Jesus Music. In between giving their thoughts on what they (mostly dis)liked about the film, the hosts do their best to supplement the narrative with all of the Jesus movement and CCM history left out of the movie—from the dozens of essential Christian artists that went completely unmentioned (How do you tell this story without Randy Stonehill?) to the avoided industry and religious politics that defined the trajectory of the music over its 50+ year history. (Side note: Why were so many music acts shown as being interviewed for the film if nothing they actually said was going to make the final cut?) Opening banter includes part one of a two-part, long-overdue rant about our societal and governmental failures regarding the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Stay tuned for the second half of this conversation which will dig deeper into the life and career of gospel and CCM legend Andraé Crouch! This week we are privileged to have the great Gregory Thornbury, author of Why Should the Devil Have All the Good Music and some terrific essays as well, notably this one on QAnon, to talk with us about The Devil and Daniel Johnston, Jeff Feuerzeig’s 2005 documentary about the late, supernaturally gifted, near-unknown singer-songwriter whose struggles with bipolar disorder kept him out of the public eye even as he amassed a following of similarly talented people. Also, demons.Demonology is something we talk about a little on the podcast when we watch The Exorcist or Hereditary; here we get a lot more intense about it, and Greg shares some of his own observations and experiences and I just want to say I’m really grateful to him for being so open and honest with us and with all of you. We hope you dig this one. Also if you’re just in it for good music, you’ve come to the right place, and you can listen to new, happy, funky, countrified stuff from Greg’s amazing daughter Kate Thornbury on Spotify, too. For the penultimate episode in our Art & Culture series we are joined by Dr. Greg Thornbury to discuss Art & Cultural Engagement. Dr. Thornbury is Vice President for Development at the New York Academy of Art in New York City and the author of Why Should the Devil Have All the Good Music: Larry Norman and the Perils of Christian Rock. Over the course of the conversation we talk about problematic ways of conceiving of “cultural engagement,” bad forms of Christian art, and why the rock star Larry Norman was such a helpful model for what it means to be a Christian in the arts. One of the more intriguing aspects of the conversation is the notion of ”kayfabe,” which comes from the arena of professional wrestling, referring to the illusions of real fighting, but actually isn't. Dr. Thornbury uses this concept as a fascinating metaphor for dishonest art. Team members on the episode from The Two Cities include Amber Bowen, Dr. Josh Carroll, Dr. John Anthony Dunne, Rev. Daniel Parham, and Dr. Logan Williams.

So what do Superman, Captain America, Professor X, and Jesus Christ all have in common? According to the canonical accounts of their lives, each one has been raised from the dead. So why is it that, even in fiction, humans yearn for heroes who die and return to life? That’s one of the questions that apologist and bestselling author Timothy Paul Jones explores in this episode with cohost Garrick Bailey and guest Todd Miles. In the second half, Garrick and Timothy go digging for God’s truth in the music of Larry Norman, the father of Christian rock--and, as it turns out, someone that Garrick had never even heard about until recently. This week's dilemma from the Infinity Gauntlet leads to a deadly duel between Jedi Master Yoda and Gandalf the White. In this Episode Todd Miles, Ph.D. is professor of theology at Western Seminary in Portland, Oregon. He is the author of the B&H Academic titles Superheroes Can’t Save You (2018) and A God of Many Understandings? (2010). Questions to Discuss 1. In Infinity War, Rocket Raccoon asks Thor about his brother Loki who has just died. Thor’s reply is, “Well, he’s been dead before” which is a reminder of how frequently death is temporary in comic-book universes. What are some of the best comic-book resurrection stories? 2. Why is there a recurrent theme of sacrifice, death, and resurrection in the comic books? 3. How might the rise of secularity reshape superhero stories now and in the future?
