In this episode, a conversation with a Readings favourite, Diana Reid, author of the new novel, Signs of Damage. The Kelly family's idyllic holiday in the South of France is disturbed when Cass, a thirteen-year-old girl, goes missing. She's discovered several hours later with no visible signs of injury. Everyone present dismisses the incident as a close brush with tragedy. Sixteen years later, at a funeral for a member of the Kelly family, Cass collapses. The present and the past start to collide as buried secrets come to light and old doubts resurface. What really happened to Cass in the South of France? And what's wrong with her now? A gripping tale of unravelling memories and moral ambiguities, Signs of Damage wrestles with the difference between understanding other people, and trying to explain them.

Hi pals,  To kick this week's ep off, we discuss the news that Hobart's Museum of Old and New Art has been ordered to allow “persons who do not identify as ladies” entry to its Ladies Lounge art installation after losing a legal battle. Next, is late-stage capitalism eroding what we expect from our friendships?   TikTok user Amelia Montooth started a conversation on the app recently after stating that we should all be participating in the ‘small favour' economy more.  A follow up to that conversation was user Fagan Chelsea who made a video saying the ‘constant venmoing each other culture to be a little dystopian'. We share our thoughts on these conversations and discuss how capitalism is changing our relationships.  The other day, Maggie made this TikTok about the commodification of love on social media. It hit a nerve and received hundreds of thousands of views. We chat about her video and her new piece for Refinery29 Au titled 'What's The Cost Of Commodifying Love On Social Media?'.  Next, we use Rebecca Jennings' Vox piece 'Everyone's A Sell Out Now' to discuss the way artists have to be marketers first and creatives second. We reference our editor's band Reckless Coast. Do you need an authenticity coach? This is the question author Diana Reid posed in ELLE Australia recently. We discuss the article and concepts surrounding it.  We have two podcast recommendations today; Broadly Relevant and Who Screwed Millenials? Thank you to Radical Yes for sponsoring this episode. In the late 18th and 19th centuries, writing as a profession was primarily considered unsuitable for women. Many women wrote under male pseudonyms, such as George Eliot, whose real name was Mary Ann Evans. Today, the number of women publishing fiction in the Western world has increased. This poses many questions, such as: do women still have to deal with social barriers in writing careers? What about women of colour pursuing writing careers? Do they face unique challenges because of their race?Listen to journalist Annika Blau, Indonesian author Ramayda Akmal, novelist Diana Reid, and author Kirstin Chen discuss these issues and questions.

Chaired by Victoria Purman. The transformative excitement of university life has been little mined by Australian fiction. In their immensely readable and impressively complex debut novels, Diana Reid and Indyana Schneider explore that most liminal time of campus life to excellent effect. Diana's Love and Virtue traverses feminism, sexuality and the precocious intellectualism of first year life on a Sydney campus. Indyana Schneider weaves music, literature, art, dance, sex and the exquisite pain and pleasure of first love into student life at Oxford.

Discussion around consent and sexual violence experienced by girls and women in educational institutions and the toxic culture engendered by these institutions has been a topic that has dominated headlines in recent years. It's a discussion that is slowly filtering its way into high school curriculums and hopefully leading to a change in what young women and men think of as healthy, respectful sexual encounters and relationships. And in a critically acclaimed debut novel called “Love & Virtue” (Ultimo Press), Diana Reid is contributing to that ongoing discussion with a fascinating work that explores this and other issues in the context of a contemporary university setting.A book that will challenge our notions of material wealth and morality, consent and context along with how we decide what is right or wrong in any particular situation.A fascinating read. I was delighted to have the chance to speak with Diana on the podcast recently.

We're back, baby! Thanks so much for your patience as we took a little bit of time off for Jas to settle into her brand new job. After a bit of life chit-chat, we delve into the dating rumours surrounding comedian Pete Davidson and Kim Kardashian. Is this another Kris Jenner PR stunt or is Pete just... a really nice guy? This topic also causes us to mull over the double standards surrounding the way the media is talking about PD versus women who date a lot of other celebrities. Next up, the tragic news that unfolded over the weekend in the US where 8 people lost their lives at Travis Scott's Astroworld Festival. We recount what happened and discuss Travis' history of inciting riotous behaviour, the violent themes of Astroworld “ragers” and whether this tragedy will make us rethink huge festivals. We reference this Instagram post by user Seanna Faith McCarty, a woman who was there and attempted to get a cameraman's attention. Prefacing this next topic with a content warning for homophobia and rape culture, Australian photographer, James J. Robinson broke into his old private school last week to protest the school's elite, toxic culture. We discuss the response to the brave photography series and Australia's rotten patriarchal private school culture. We reference this VICE article by Julie Fenwick. For our first week back, Maggie recommends Love & Virtue, a book by Diana Reid and Jas recommends Eiffel, a romantic French film starring Sex Education's Emma Mackey. Katie Zhou created our fab cover art and India Raine is our wonderful producer and composer of our jingle. We often talk about menopause as puberty in reverse. Remember puberty? You sprouted breasts and grew hips and maybe got curvier all the way around. Nobody ever said to you, “What have you done?” You were obviously going through this very natural process. When those hormones reverse course, your body also starts changing. Only now, we beat ourselves up and feel like we've somehow failed if we have a belly when we didn't before…even though maybe our body is adding that padding to help protect us. We go into all of that and much more with this week's guest, Diana Reid of The Global Dietitian. Diana is licensed as a dietitian in both the US and Luxembourg and works with clients who are seeking to improve their health and quality of life through balanced eating and a more peaceful relationship with food and their bodies. She is also 53, lifts weights, runs, rides bikes, and has written about her own journey with body changes and weight gain after going through early menopause at 42 due to surgery from PCOS and endometriosis.
