After talking with Ala and Dr. Meyerhoffer last week, we couldn't wait to continue the allyship conversation at the student level. Today we hear from recent Southern grads about their experiences while students and perspectives on allyship since graduating. Gabriela Vazquez is a first-generation student-turned-graduate and graduate intern for Southern's Office of University Access Programs. Born and raised in Puerto Rico, Gabriela's outstanding athletic and academic performance landed her at Southern, where she earned her undergraduate degree. She is currently pursuing a M.B.A. in Finance. Camryn Arpino-Brown is also a first-generation student-turned-graduate and AmeriCorps VISTA for Southern's Office of University Access Programs. As an undergraduate, Camryn served as an Orientation Ambassador, Orientation Coordinator, Resident advisor, and Diversity Coordinator. She was also involved in OLAS, N.A.A.C.P., SGA, and S.I.S.T.A.S. In her final fall semester, she co-hosted the university's Black Lives Matter March. In May of 2021, she received her bachelor's in psychology, also earning the prestigious Henry Barnard Distinguished Student Award, the Ingrid Washinawatok El-Issa Service Award, the University Leadership Award, and the Diversity Scholar Excellence Award.

Tianna Butler is the Associate Director of Admissions and Diversity Coordinator at National Presbyterian School. She has been in education for nearly a decade working as a Lower School Theatre Director, Teaching Associate, and Lead Second Grade Teacher respectively. Her dedication to justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion has its roots in her own experiences as a student in both public and independent schools and extends to ensuring students, families, and educators have the support they need. She was awarded the POCIS (People of Color in Independent Schools) Impact Award in 2014 for supporting diversity, promoting inclusion, and affirming community in her work with elementary-aged students at Charlotte Country Day School. Shannon Montague Shannon M. Montague served as Head of the Learning Village at St. Anne’s-Belfield School, leading operational and curricular programs for students and faculty in preschool to 8th grade. In this role, she worked to build on the school’s innovative, inquiry-based programming called FabLab and Quest; helped to focus middle school faculty’s thinking and energy around best practices in coordination with the University of Virginia’s Remaking Middle School program; and relished opportunities for cross-divisional collaboration among students and chances for student leadership, voice, and agency.Most recently, she served as the Director of Professional Development for the Virginia Association of Independent Schools. Earlier in her career, Shannon worked at the Bullis School in Potomac, MD; St. Albans School in Washington, DC; and The Bryn Mawr School. Arhm Choi Wild is a queer, Korean-American poet who grew up in the slam community of Ann Arbor, Michigan, and went on to perform across the country, including at Brave New Voices, the New York City Poetry Festival, and Asheville Wordfest. Their debut book of poems, CUT TO BLOOM, was the winner of the 2019 Write Bloody Book Contest. Arhm is a Kundiman fellow with an MFA in Poetry from Sarah Lawrence College, and was a finalist for the Jake Adam York Prize in 2019. They have been anthologized in Daring to Repair by Wising Up Press and The Queer Movement Anthology of Literatures, and their work appears in Barrow Street, The Massachusetts Review, Pleiades, Split this Rock, and other publications. They work as the Director of the Progressive Teaching Institute and as a Diversity Coordinator at a school in New York City.

This event, held February 11 at the CSWR, is part of a year-long series titled "Theological Bioethics Within Marginalized Communities." This lecture is a womanist critique of a longstanding racist campaign of domestic terror in the United States. It investigated the intersectionality of racism, in particular the racist acts condoned by religious communities and by the health care system. It gave special attention to the 40-year Syphilis Study at Tuskegee conducted by the United States Public Health Service. The Rev. Dr. Joan R. Harrell is a womanist practical theologian and journalist committed to social justice. Her scholarship investigates the intersectionality of racism, sexism, xenophobia, religion, politics, media and public health inequities in marginalized communities. She is a Journalism Lecturer and the inaugural Diversity Coordinator for the Auburn University School of Communication and Journalism and Associate Pastor at the historic Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church in Montgomery, Al. My guest this week will be Warren Rupnarain, the Accessibility and Diversity Coordinator for the City of Vaughan. Leading the City’s efforts to implement accessible services and programs that support a barrier-free community, Warren provides strategic and policy advice to City departments implementing and complying with provincially mandated accessibility standards. In addition, he develops and implements workplace diversity-related strategies, programs and services to engage and support the organization’s diverse communities and stakeholders. Warren also provides support to the Vaughan Accessibility Advisory Committee and provides community outreach and liaison activities. Prior to his work for the City of Vaughan, Warren was the Accessibility Coordinator for the City of Markham, where he coordinated the City`s efforts in meeting all legislative requirements to implement best practices that ensured equity and inclusivity of people with disabilities. And before Markham, Warren was the Government Relations Advocate at March of Dimes Canada. While in this role, he appeared on Canada AM, CBC Radio, City TV, Toronto Star and various other media to raise awareness of disability and accessibility issues. He was also the lead advocate and host of “Warrens World.” During this project, he promoted accessibility and interviewed politicians to obtain opinions and support on the creation of a “Canadians with Disabilities Act.”
