On the eleventh episode of Radically Honest, your host Dasom Lee gets real with Lifestyle Influencer, Blogger, and Entrepreneur Mattie James. Featuring her beautiful family, @themattiejames's picture-perfect life online exudes posh glamour. Amassing an audience to be reckoned with, her decade-long journey as a blogger is worth hearing about. Turn your volume on high—here's a conversation (and person) you'll fall in love with. Inspired by her mother's love for magazines, Mattie dreamt of working at a magazine editorial. Her passion transcended her actions when she began her blog ten years ago. She recalls a reader warmly referring to her as an "everyday black girl." Relatable, her content helps her audience discover magic in the mundane everyday. Five years of hard work and retail 9-5 jobs later, she became a full-time blogger. 98K Instagram followers and a #Mattiemademedoit hashtag later, her exuberance reaches many. "Be yourself. Tell your story. Show up as you, this is enough." - Mattie James. Mattie fiercely believes that authenticity is the key. Trust that your followers will be impressed by who you are. After reshaping her priorities, she now experiences more peace than happiness—she's thriving. Her openness on her and her husband's humanity in their marriage surprised some of her followers, confirming that highlight reels are curated. Influencers are people, too. When negotiating brand deals, you represent your value. Candid about her experiences with adversity, she notes that indirect prejudice can lead to an unfair return on your hard work. Educate yourself on the compensation your industry peers are receiving. Be professionally direct. So, how can you stand up for your worth? Listen to the episode to find out. Join the movement. Mattie shares how she decided to blog full-time after being laid off from her job, how she prioritizes faith and family and more! In this episode of the Mattie James show, we’ll be discussing how to get brands to notice you online. Sure, pitching brands can be part of your strategy as an influencer, but it’s also important to do the work necessary and create a strategy where brands notice you online and in turn reach out & pitch you. When brands start to reach out to you because of the kind of content you create and the kind of engagement you have with an audience, they’ll usually bring you lucrative opportunities that you never would have thought of to pitch them. By the end of this episode, you’ll understand exactly what you should include in your strategy to get brands to notice you online.
In this episode of the Mattie James show, we’ll be discussing how to create an editorial process and become consistent at posting. This can be applied to anything - your blog, your YouTube channel, your podcast or even your Instagram. You build a following when you post consistently and until you have a process put in place, you will be inconsistent. By the end of this episode, you should understand why an editorial calendar wasn’t enough and how to create your own editorial process that’ll get you consistent once and for all.
In this episode of the Mattie James show, we’ll be discussing how to elevate your visuals as an influencer. The first thing a brand or your audience does to your content is see it, so prioritizing your visuals is important if you want to be taken seriously as an influencer and eventually paid to create content.

About our Guest: Mattie James began blogging about her favorite products and outfits in 2008. Five years later in 2010, blogging became her full-time job. In 2017, she began her Mattie James blog where she talks about beauty, life, motherhood, inspiration and more. She also creates courses and has worked with well known brands like TJ Maxx, State Farm, Olay, and many more. She is also the host of The Mattie James Show and the Mattie & Chris podcast. Episode Summary: March is Women's History Month or what I call the powerful woman month. This month I am highlighting some dynamic women that I really admire. Mattie James is a brand influencer and entrepreneur who I admire and am thrilled to have on the show. We have been supporting each other over social media and it's great to talk with her. One of the things we talk about is giving ourselves permission which was also the theme of The Bliss Project that I just attended over this past weekend. CLIFF NOTES Mattie is amazing at working with brands, but she also lives her life’s purpose with her work. She evolved from a fashion blogger to a mom who began sharing more aspects of her life. People cared more about her story, than just about what she was wearing. For Mattie, everything is content as she authentically shares her life. People want to make their lives better. If you have figured out a way to make your life better, people want to apply that to their lives. To be successful, we have got to prioritize mindset. Our success mirrors our personal development. Assuming that something good is out of reach is a reflection of our mindset. Get to the reason why you want to be successful and ask who you want to help and who you want to make better. Quotes from the show: “When you first start blogging, you're going to be really bad at it just keep pushing through.” - Mattie James “It was important for me to show my entire life to say that you can do this too.” - Mattie James “People care more about story than they do about niche.” - Mattie James “I tried to be as organic and authentic as possible.” - Mattie James “I have the mindset that every single thing is content.” - Mattie James “People want to make their lives better. If you have figured out a way to make your life better, people want to apply that to their lives.” - Mattie James “Anytime I can sow a seed of light or betterment in somebody's life, because I shared a piece of mine, without compromising or diluting my quality of life, I'm happy to do it.” - Mattie James “Any success that we have mirrors our personal development.” - Mattie James “Ask questions from the right perspective in the right position.” - Mattie James “We automatically assume that if something is good it's out of reach for us, not because we lack resources but because we lack mindset.” - Mattie James “Until you get the mindset right no matter what kind of seed you put in there, you will still come up short.” - Mattie James “When you put out content that is really you, your following will inevitably grow.” - Mattie James “If you are with somebody who is willing to do the work, you will be good.” - Mattie James “I get the feeling that Mattie is truly living her life's purpose.” - Patrice Washington “If you don't evolve as these platforms evolve, you are going to have a problem.” - Patrice Washington “When you don't understand what your purpose is it's truly a struggle to prioritize your personal finances.” - Patrice Washington “I'd rather have a real connection with my followers than to have millions of followers where no one is moved.” - Patrice Washington “It's been so refreshing to see my husband do the work because he wants to be better.” - Patrice Washington Mattie’s Redefining Wealth Rapid Wisdom Questions Define Success: Purpose realized and purpose actualized. Consistently working on making my purpose a reality. Anytime I fulfill my purpose, I am honoring anything and everything that is important to my life. My purpose is spreading the good news. Me sharing with you how I restored my marriage is spreading the good news. Me sharing with you how I made six figures working with brands being myself is spreading the good news. Anytime, I'm sharing the good news it's my success, because that's me realizing and actualizing my purpose. Define Wealth in 3 Words or Less: Fulfillment, overflow, and purposeful. In this episode of the Mattie James podcast, I talk about the best ways to find the right brand contacts. I get this question at least 20 times a week. This is a kinda a tough question because it isn’t a one size fits all answer. There are so many different titles for brand contacts, so I can’t just tell you one specific title, or person, to reach out to. However, I can tell you the best way and the easiest way to find brand contacts, regardless of who the brand is. For show notes, visit mattiejames.com/ep20.

In this episode of The Mattie James podcast, we’re discussing how to write emails that get responses. Maybe you are looking to get new clients. Maybe you are looking to nab a paid freelance gig. Maybe you’re looking for an intern. Or maybe you are just looking for outreach to get more attention. Cold email can be pretty intimidating, however, I’m going to share things you need to focus on to get the response you want: personalization, clarity, and relevance. In this episode of the Mattie James podcast we’re discussing the 5 things you need to have before you pitch brands. People always ask me "what do I need before I pitch brands?" This is my elaborated answer. By the end of this episode, you'll know what you need to do, have and get before making the big leap and pitching a brand your idea for money.
In this episode of the Mattie James podcast we’re discussing how to find your confidence as an influencer. This is a question I tend to get fairly often from followers and listeners alike. Confidence as an influencer didn’t happen overnight and we all have our days. Turns out, there are 3 things I had to do to find that confidence: be aware of my value, research the market relentlessly and know my audience. You can find the show notes where you can recap this episode at mattiejames.com/ep15.
In this episode of the Mattie James podcast we’ll be discussing the 4 Seasons of Success and exactly what they look like. There’s a misconception that success should happen faster than it actually does, when achieving success actually has various seasons. It certainly doesn’t happen overnight and to become the successful version of yourself, you’re going to have to go through each season no matter who you are. Identifying these seasons has helped me to be tremendously aware of where I am in my journey as an influencer and entrepreneur and by the end of this episode my hope is that it’ll bring you much awareness as well. If you’re interested in the show notes (and a full transcript of this episode) where you can recap this episode, you can find them at mattiejames.com/ep14.
