This week we are rebroadcasting our interview with adrienne maree brown which originally aired in April 2019.adrienne maree brown begins this week's episode by asking, “If we were not ashamed of our pleasure, what would become possible? If we started to understand that pleasure is something that everyone should have access to, what would become possible?”This week on For The Wild, we are exploring how to embody pleasure in its many forms with adrienne maree brown. Drawing upon Audre Lorde's seminal publication, Uses of the Erotic: The Erotic as Power, adrienne maree brown's latest book, Pleasure Activism: The Politics of Feeling Good, reiterates how once we truly know the pleasure of being alive, suffering becomes unimaginable. Above all, pleasure resides in our body, but many of us seem to forget this through lifetimes of social conditioning, performative identities, and the multitude of ways in which capitalism and patriarchy have filtered love and desire through the lens of ownership. Yet, whether we are cognizant of this or not, our pleasure and our liberation remain inextricably bound together.adrienne maree brown is the author of Emergent Strategy: Shaping Change, Changing Worlds and Pleasure Activism: The Politics of Feeling Good and co-editor of Octavia's Brood: Science Fiction from Social Justice Movements. adrienne facilitates social justice and Black liberation through the Emergent Strategy Ideation Institute, the Detroit Narrative Agency and is part of Black Organizing for Leadership and Dignity. Da Bruhs Bookshelf is joined with a special guest Kat, from the F.A.B podcast with another out-of-the-box discussion guided by adrienne marie brown's "Pleasure Activism" The Politics of Feeling Good. This groundbreaking book explores the transformative power of pleasure as a form of resistance and healing. In this podcast, we delve into some key themes and ideas presented in the book. adrienne maree brown invites listeners to reimagine activism beyond traditional models of struggle and sacrifice, emphasizing the importance of pleasure and joy in our movements for social justice. The book highlights the ways in which pleasure can be a radical and revolutionary force, challenging oppressive systems and creating spaces for liberation. Through a series of essays, interviews, and personal reflections, brown explores various aspects of pleasure activism, including sex positivity, consent, body autonomy, and embracing pleasure as a birthright. She highlights the significance of pleasure in marginalized communities, particularly for those whose bodies and desires have been historically policed and oppressed. The podcast engages with brown's intersectional approach to pleasure activism, acknowledging that different individuals and communities experience pleasure in diverse ways. Listeners will gain insight into the importance of centering marginalized voices, fostering inclusivity, and dismantling systems of oppression to create spaces where pleasure can flourish for all. The conversations in this podcast will encourage listeners to challenge their preconceived notions of activism, inviting them to consider pleasure as a tool for personal and societal transformation. Whether you are new to activism or a seasoned advocate, "Pleasure Activism" offers a fresh perspective on the possibilities of joy and pleasure in our collective efforts for a more just and equitable world.

The book Existential Kink, by Carolyn Elliott, blew my mind. She uses the power of erotic pleasure to deconstruct shame and bring the unconscious to consciousness so you can better understand the patterns and habits that lead to self-sabotage and limit the achievement of your potential. Doing this work can lead to more creative flow, libido, and energy in the day-to-day. Explore at your own risk… and with an open mind.

That's a wrap on 2022. Happy New Year! In this episode, Jasmine, Kestrel, and Eliza unpack the astrology of 2023. With Mercury and Mars both retrograde at the top of the year, we begin on a slow note. But this year has a few huge changes in store. Like, generationally huge. In March, Saturn enters Pisces for the first time in 30 years. (That means if you have Saturn in Pisces, you're entering your Saturn return. And if you have Saturn in Aquarius, your return is officially ending.) Then Pluto enters Aquarius for the first time since the 18th century. 2023 is all about cultivating supple boundaries with yourself and others and co-creating the reality you want to exist in. Tune in for a detailed breakdown of these transits and more. For more on Jasmine, Kestrel, and Eliza: www.kosmictonic.comFor more information on the books mentioned in this episode: Pleasure Activism: The Politics of Feeling Good by adrienne maree brownI Got a Name: The Murder of Krystal Senyk (forthcoming in May 2023 by Eliza Robertson — pre-orders available in Canada only for now)
After a summer of walking with our dogs, listening to the leadership of youth, and saying yes to ourselves, we're back with Season 2 of Dancing on Desks! The season begins with a conversation with Detroit youth organizers Hafiza Khalique, Brittyn Benjamin-Kelley, and adult organizer Julia Cueno. We also chat with Brooklyn elementary school teacher Emily Stutts and three of her former students—Kaide, Greyson, and Kyndle—about their bike to school day. We close with LaQuesha Sanders, a lawyer and historian, who shares the origin story of student debt, why student loans are trash, and why the U.S. government has more than enough money to cancel all of the debt student owes. Our storytellers offer us an opportunity to think about the questions: How do youth and adults co-build spaces of accountability, listening, dreaming, and freedom in and outside of school? What allows relationships between adults and youth in schools to exist in what activist, freedom dreamer, and writer adrienne maree brown calls liberated relationship? What exactly is pleasure activism, and how can we incorporate it into our everyday lives in order to not only feel better, but also participate in a form of revolution? Why has pleasure been top of mind for Rogers, who recently earned her Masters from the Harvard Divinity School? And what does it feel like to release your album on the same day as Beyoncé? My word for 2022 is JOY. After living through the pandemic, epically burning out last year, and navigating perimenopause fo the last five years, I was needing some joy in my life. I knew I would bee to be conscious about cultivating it, because JOY wasn't showing up on it's own. Over solstice last winter, I shared my word JOY with my witchy friends Autumn and Jendeah and they were like, "Joy, yes, but have you considered Pleasure?" Pleasure? Ummm. no. I'm immediately thinking, "Is pleasure necessary? Isn't it dangerous? I mean, JOY would benefit others. I'd be happier and easier to be around. I'd spread light and love to everyone who came near me, right? I mean, we could all use more joy right now." But pleasure? Pleasure = sexy. Sexy = not me. But I decided to lean in. (I love/hate this quality about myself.) My resistance obviously meant I should get curious. So I did. In this episode, I'm talking with my friends, Jendeah and Autumn - both who are faithful to the practice and experience of pleasure in their lives. I'll be honest, they feel different to be around. They experience the world, themselves and their relationships through another lens - an embodied, rich, present, and pleasurable lens. About my guests: Autumn Youngblood is a pleasure ambassador — she has committed nearly the last decade of her life to exploring, testing, and sharing the transformational power of choosing pleasure. She is the daughter of artists, the mother of daughters, and is currently in a deep transformational process of claiming her sovereignty. She manages a retreat center called Liminalia in the coastal mountain range of Oregon where she loves to welcome friends for healing, renewal, and empowerment. Jendeah Foreman identifies as a Pleasure Activist, Witch, tarot reader, social worker, creative writer, cat mama, and a big voiced, big idea having, outspoken, hilarious, story telling, sex positive, hula hooping badass, tender hearted feminist goddess. Jenn is part of a Pleasure Coven where she meets monthly with a group of women who are dedicated to the ongoing conversation and real life application of pleasure as a guiding light for a happier, more fulfilling and lush life. She has spent the last several years prioritizing pleasure in all aspects of her life. She believes that women fully anchored in the power of their pleasure can and will save the world. Please enjoy our conversation and if the kids are around, you might want to save this episode for another time. Just saying.. RESOURCES FOR YOU! Writer adrienne maree brown explores the radical, liberatory potential of pleasure - to reclaim the self from the bounds of oppression, to restore our relationships with other people and the planet, and to imagine (and inhabit) the future worlds we hope to win with our activism. adrienne is author of the book Pleasure Activism: The Politics of Feeling Good from AK Press. https://www.akpress.org/pleasure-activism.html
How can we imagine and practice freedom in this time of limitations? In this episode Amisha speaks with adrienne maree brown, a writer, activist and Black feminist. adrienne is the author of ‘Grievers', ‘Holding Change: The Way of Emergent Strategy Facilitation and Meditation,' ‘We Will Not Cancel Us' and ‘Pleasure Activism: The Politics of Feeling Good' and many more important books that help us create transformative strategies and movement for our time. She is the co-host of the ‘How to Survive the End of the World' and ‘Octavia's Parables' podcasts. Amisha and adrienne explore ideas on how we can come to imagine and embody a future in which we are free. adrienne shares that the visioning of our futures is a fundamental practice that can create alignment between our behaviours and visions. It is a way to grow our individual practices into compelling futures; futures that we want to be alive for, futures that are free and that can become large-scale community freedom movement. Together they acknowledge that we live in a time of spiritual awakening where we are learning to grieve. We exist in crumbling systems that can no longer continue if we wish to continue as a collective species. adrienne shares that rituals of grief and spiritual practices are a way to prepare ourselves individually and at a systemic level to let go of systems that we are embedded in and often comforted by. adrienne believes that we are closer to our free futures than we have learnt to believe and that the structures of western school education distract us from envisioning the kind of humans we need to be to participate in this future. We learn that in order to embody the visions for our compelling futures we must be willing to practise honesty and boundaries, allow ourselves to experience pleasure, make ourselves vulnerable and engage in relational learning to co-vision in relationship with others in our communities. We need to question the construct of linear time and imagine it as layered, moving in many directions, in cycles, something that is mysterious and therefore opening up possibilities for spiritual shifts and for what our actions could mean. What does a just climate future look like? In this bonus episode Ayana and guest adrienne maree brown discuss Imagine 2200, Fix's climate-fiction contest, which recognizes stories that envision the next 180 years of equitable climate progress, imagining intersectional worlds of abundance, adaptation, reform, and hope. Turning towards fueling the imagination, this episode touches on stewarding a just future and the value of presence with ourselves, each other, and the movements we dedicate ourselves to. We are in a battle for our attention and for our imaginations. The winner will determine the future of the climate and of humanity. Facing this reality, and the reality of a changing climate is not easy, but despair around this can bring us closer to the earth and to each other when it is used as a learning tool. In the shift from panic to practice, visionary fiction is vital medicine, and adrienne guides us to stretch our minds to see a future beyond what the confines of white supremacy, colonialism, heteropatriarchy, and capitalism tell us is possible. adrienne maree brown is the writer-in-residence at the Emergent Strategy Ideation Institute, and author of Grievers (the first novella in a trilogy on the Black Dawn imprint), Holding Change: The Way of Emergent Strategy Facilitation and Mediation, We Will Not Cancel Us and Other Dreams of Transformative Justice, Pleasure Activism: The Politics of Feeling Good, Emergent Strategy: Shaping Change, Changing Worlds and the co-editor of Octavia's Brood: Science Fiction from Social Justice Movements and How to Get Stupid White Men Out of Office. For some of us, simply living in our bodies is a daily act against oppression, against marginalization, criminalization and hate. This work is exhausting…most justice work is. That's why finding what brings us joy is so central to both our individual and our collective liberation. While seemingly simple, when put in practice, pleasure can be revolutionary. This is the idea that Adrienne Maree Brown puts forth in her book, “Pleasure Activism: The Politics of Feeling Good.” Taking inspiration from Black feminist writers like Audre Lorde and Octavia Butler, the author, activist and doula demonstrates how we can tap into our desire to organize against oppression. Adrienne's work is a gift for so many who don't feel that pleasure is an accessible reality including: women, people of color, trans and non binary folks, queer folks, disabled folks, and survivors of sexual violence. Adrienne joins us today to share why finding pleasure should be centered in our justice work.

It is important for me to pay homage to those people who have impacted my life. The Audre Lorde's, the Oprah's, the Brene Brown's. Viewing their work and seeing them be honest and free, inspired my personal journey of finding myself and my voice. So this episode is extra special because today's guest is the one and only adrienne maree brown. She is a writer, podcast host, and organizer, and we have an amazing conversation about life, acceptance, and connection. adrienne describes how growing up in a biracial home, and splitting her time between the U.S. and Germany, opened her up to learning different cultures and ways of being. She talks about the interconnectedness of human nature, and how she manages her influence on others. And, she expresses the importance of listening to your body and making choices that will benefit you. Check out her website https://adriennemareebrown.net/ to learn more! Rachel Economy is a poet-performer, ecological educator, design-thinking strategist, and gardener. She is the owner of Index For The Next World, an online hub of story-publication, skills-education, and human-centered design consulting for those seeking to build a world that thrives. Rachel holds a master's degree in Social Innovation and Sustainability from Goddard Graduate Institute (GGI), with a concentration in Transformative Language Arts and a master's thesis exploring narrative re-design as a part of social change and ecological justice. She teaches gardening, needs-based design, systems thinking, writing & performance, permaculture, group facilitation, maker & homesteader crafts, and embodied nature connection skills to all ages, in rural and urban settings. We talked to Rachel about early moments in gardening, and her participatory relationship with the land and plants. Rachel's way of doing design thinking and systems thinking includes thinking about a whole ecology, whether she's working with organizations or gardens: whose land are we on and what repair needs to be made with the original inhabitants; and asking and receiving permission from plants and people. She says, “Goddard let me pay attention to story and ecological systems at the same time.” Rachel's poetry chapbook, "The Origins of Streams," was published by Finishing Line Press in January 2021. On poetry Rachel says, “Poetry is an inherently sensory form, and therefore an ecological form.” You can find that chapbook, the Index for the Next World issues, and more of Rachel's writing and work at www.indexforthenextworld.com. This is a first for the Messy Middle! We have our FIRST EVER counsellor on the podcast today! We are joined by Ji-Youn Kim (she/her)! She is a justice-oriented counsellor with an aim to decolonize her practice and make counselling a safe(r) space for BIPOC, LGBTQ2S+, immigrants & refugees, sex workers, and beyond. She helps her clients feel a little more liberated in themselves, in the community and in the world. This conversation was a (good) doozy. We chatted about Ji-Youn's progression into the counselling world and how she has been a fan of disrupting the status quo for some time now. We talk about what Collective Liberation means and how it is tied into her practice and why we should allow ourselves space to be angry. Ji-Youn walks us through her journey to decolonizing how she practices as a counsellor and why White Supremacy is still so prevalent in the psychology industry today. "You don't have to be disabled to experience ableism." Who gets to define ABILITY? Historically, who has deemed certain people valuable while telling others to stay quiet and in the background? How does this affect the culture that we live in? So many questions! In today's episode we learn about ableism, and I'll talk about how internalized ableism has affected my wellbeing. I introduce you to concepts from some folks in the disability justice community including Stacy Milburn, Rabbi Rose Kukla, and Dr. Angel Love Miles. I'll also interview Joleen Nevers. She is an instructor at ISEE and teaches the Sexability class that blew my mind and exposed me to the ways in which I had been hating on myself and my disability. I hope that it will introduce you to some ideas that will spark some excitement and hope within you. He notes that there were no black contributors involved in writing this and so it is important to reach out to the broader community to gain a more holistic understanding of disability and sexuality.
