Merrett also serves as WIU Distinguished University Professor. Many rural communities across the country face challenges like population decline, limited resources, and a lack of opportunities. But there's good news: with strategic planning and a focus on homegrown solutions, these communities can not only survive but thrive.Empowering Communities to Take ChargePrograms like the Mapping Program, offered by the Illinois Institute for Rural Affairs, are making a difference. This innovative initiative brings community members together for a series of intensive workshops, fostering a grassroots effort to create a vision for the future. By working collaboratively, residents identify their community's strengths and weaknesses, establish shared goals, and develop concrete action plans to achieve them.Turning Challenges into OpportunitiesThe challenges faced by rural communities can be daunting, but they also present opportunities for innovation. Here are some key strategies to consider:Community Planning: Develop a data-driven plan with the Mapping Program or a similar initiative. Leverage hidden assets like community foundations to fund local projects.Supporting Small Businesses: Shift the focus from attracting large corporations to building an ecosystem that supports entrepreneurs. Offer training programs, create a welcoming environment for startups and remote workers, and establish co-working spaces.Workforce Development: Partner with local community colleges to develop training programs that equip residents with in-demand skills. Recognize the growing diversity in rural communities and expand opportunities for underrepresented groups to become entrepreneurs.Building Hope and Capacity: Tap into resources like Peace Corps Fellows and AmeriCorps VISTA volunteers to supplement local expertise. Provide ongoing support to communities that have completed a strategic planning program.Building a Brighter Future, TogetherBy working together, rural communities can overcome challenges and create a future filled with opportunity. With careful planning, a focus on local businesses, and a commitment to developing a skilled workforce, vibrant rural communities can become a reality.

Welcome to the premier episode of Appalachian Table Tales. This Podcast is presented to you by Backroads of Appalachia, Americorps VISTA and the What's up World Podcast. The first episode features Father and Son. Mr. Jack and Grant Martin. Jack and Grant operated a local dairy farm for over 53 years. The stories these Men tell will take you back to a time long ago when Men were Men and tough as nails. Sitting directly across from me during this interview was Mr. Jack Martin. You can plainly see that this Man exudes hard work, dedication, Wisdom and Love. You can also see this from his son Grant. As they set across from me and explain how life was growing up on a dairy farm I am reminded of a time when I was a kid and how much simpler times have passed by. Jack and Grant and two Men of God. They tell of how they run a local church and how it has played an instrumental part of their successes. Towards the end of this Podcast, I ask Jack one final question and his response is one that I think we all need to hear. Thank You to Backroads of Appalachia and Americorps VISTA for making this Podcast possible, and for your dedication to our beloved Appalachian Heritage. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/danny-potter/support

How can nonprofits effectively communicate with diverse age groups? Nicole Mandarano of the Oregon Lions Sight & Hearing Foundation joins us to discuss bridging generational divides and crafting messages that resonate with multiple audiences. We'll explore adapting to younger digital natives while still engaging older donors and volunteers. Tune in for tips on intergenerational marketing, social media, staffing, and more to further your mission. About the guest Nicole graduated from Lafayette College in Easton, PA then lived in Paris to learn French and pursue her study of the WW2 Occupation. Ever restless, Nicole moved to San Francisco in the early 90s and started a translation business and started teaching entrepreneurship to youth. That interest brought her to serve as an AmeriCorps VISTA member in Paterson, NJ with foster teens aging out of state care. To fund the teens' project to create an urban farmstand, Nicole started grant writing in 1997 and secured funding from Rutgers University. Winning that first grant fueled a drive for proposal writing since then to help nonprofits in NY, NJ and for the past 12 years in OR. She and her partner John met at CUNY Law School in 2001. In 2011, they co-founded the Homeless Youth Law Clinic where they practiced movement lawyering for unhoused youth in Portland, Oregon. They created the clinic with youth and advocates from the community, those in the foster care to youth homelessness pipeline, immigrant youth and many others with lived experiences. HYLC concentrated on the civil legal rights of homeless youth and the consequences of the criminalization of homelessness. Currently Nicole focuses on grant writing, funder relationships, donor stewardship, development, marketing and event planning for the Oregon Lions Sight & Hearing Foundation, a statewide nonprofit based in Portland that offers access to vision and hearing healthcare. One of her grant highlights? Capital funding from the Lions Clubs International Foundation to build & furnish an optical finishing lab that edges high quality, low cost new eyeglasses to Oregonians who qualify. Women trained in paraoptometrics while formerly incarcerated at the Coffee Creek Correctional Facility manage the lab and its for profit optical shop, Eye Promise. Driving home last summer after a particularly exhausting day, I was craving an escape, an adventure or some thought-provoking podcast to make the drive a bit more enjoyable. I came across Johanna Garton as a guest on a podcast and my interest peaked. I knew and had worked with her mom, Jane Garton. Years ago I knew Jane was researching a book about a local mountain climber years before however Jane's Parkinsons diagnosis got in the way of her completing the book. The local mountain climber was Christine Boskoff and ironically went to high school with her daughter Johanna. Johanna picked up the story and released Edge of the Map in April of 2020. After listening to the podcast with Johanna I immediately bought Edge of the Map and loved getting lost in the adventurous life and stories from the thrill seeking, emotional roller coaster to an escape to Mt. Everest and beyond. I reached out to Johanna and shared this crazy idea of a podcast I was launching. During one of our interactions as we unwound the thread of the podcast episode she stopped and exclaimed “wait, your podcast is about family adventures? You should probably know that my first book is about our family adventure story.” I agreed to read the first book before scheduling our recording and boy am I glad I did. As I read the first book, Awakening East, I got a better glimpse of the badass, adventurous mom that Johanna Garton is. Johanna Garton is a mother, author, and cross country coach who has played many roles throughout her life. A graduate of Syracuse University in journalism, and a law degree from DePaul University. As an AmeriCorps VISTA member in Chicago, Johanna worked on behalf of refugee survivors of torture at the Heartland Alliance. She has served on the Colorado Governor's Commission on Community Service and taught advocacy and legal issues for nonprofits at Regis University. Several years of living and working in Asia, including time in China with her husband, son, and daughter, inspired her to write her first book, Awakening East. She and her family live in Denver. Key Takeaways When you are in the middle on an adventure, you can't always see the story unfolding. What started as a blog to connect with friends and family while living in China transformed into a book about 6-7 months later Allow for blanks in your plans to allow your partner to see themselves in your adventure story. Even though Johanna had most of the concept planned out, she engaged her husband throughout and gave him ownership of different elements. The typical refrain that children are resilient took Johanna by surprise as things didn't land as expected when they shared plans with their kids. It took almost 6 months for their kids to get their stride in China, so much so that they didn't want to leave. There is a balance between persistence and adaptation. Each kid saw things differently and what resonated was different. Living in China for a year was every imaginable adjective. While Johanna would go in with fewer expectations, she also acknowledged so much of the beauty was in the messiness that she did not wish the experience to be different. The year abroad changed the trajectory of Johanna's career. Today she is an author and can't imagine doing anything differently. The difference between is author and a writer is that an author is a fancy title with perhaps some luck in getting their writing published. Since Johanna's story is already written, she is now busy writing others stories and doesn't find herself writing for pleasure as much as she previously did. “I fail a lot, and my kids see me fail often. That trait may have been the ingredient to see me through the areas that induce fear.” Finding your voice and the voice of the female climber allowed Johanna to bring more humanity to the Edge of the Map story. “It was a very different experience to write my story vs. writing someone else's story.” Document your life in whatever format works best for you. It's important to keep track of more than the highlight reels. Johanna uses voice memos app on her phone to capture family interactions 2020 was not the year to release a book, however she found Edge of the Map has turned out to be a story of resiliency that has resonated with so many readers.
