Here's An Update Hospitals in Gwinnett County are expanding their services with new facilities, including Northside Hospital's 100,000-square-foot medical office building in Buford, set to open this summer. Additionally, construction on a 15-story tower at Northside Gwinnett in Lawrenceville is underway, expected to add over 300 patient beds and make it the largest campus in the hospital system by 2025. Another Northside medical office building is planned on Sugarloaf Parkway. Northeast Georgia Health System is also expanding its Braselton hospital campus with a $565 million project, adding 150 licensed acute care beds and doubling the number of treatment rooms in the Emergency Department. The expansion is scheduled to open in phases, with the first phase expected in summer 2025 and the second phase in 2026. STORY 2: Northeast Gwinnett Residents Face Big Decision On Area's Future In Cityhood Vote. An Update The proposed cityhood of Mulberry in Gwinnett County is headed to a referendum vote after Governor Brian Kemp signed Senate Bill 333 into law. If approved, Mulberry would become Gwinnett County's 17th city, encompassing approximately 41,000 residents and becoming the county's largest city by geographic size and the second-largest by population. Proponents, including House Majority Leader Chuck Efstration, highlight the opportunity for local control over planning and zoning decisions without imposing a city property tax. However, opponents express concerns about potential financial implications for Gwinnett County, with projections indicating an annual loss of $9.1 million in revenue. The referendum will appear on ballots in May, marking a significant decision for Gwinnett County residents. STORY 3: PROGRESS: Other Big Projects To Look Forward To In 2024 Several significant projects are underway in Gwinnett County, shaping its future in 2024: - The Westin Atlanta Gwinnett hotel at the Gas South District, with 360 rooms, will open soon, offering amenities such as a Starbucks, restaurant, and rooftop bar. It's been in development for over a decade and will cater to visitors attending events at the Gas South Arena and Convention Center. - Construction of the south plaza at The Forum Peachtree Corners has commenced, aiming for completion by the 2024 holiday shopping season. Students from Berkmar High School recently produced a short film about veteran ASL teacher Troy Bowman as part of the Roku Change Makers program. Paine was assisting a 63-year-old woman with a flat tire on Cardell Road when another driver collided with her car, throwing him 20 feet into a ditch. He suffered head injuries requiring staples, a collapsed lung, and swelling in his right leg. Paine, who is self-employed, faces at least a 4-week recovery period without income and maybe longer. He expressed concerns about speeding on Cardell Road, inadequate street lighting, and mailbox damage. Cobb County authorities have initiated a traffic study in response to the incident. A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to help with Paine's medical bills, and the condition of the injured woman, Deborah Wright, remains unknown. The incident occurred when the driver placed a box by the front door of a home, and an eastern diamondback snake leaped out and bit her. She quickly fell ill and called for assistance. She was subsequently hospitalized and was reported to be in "very serious" condition. The snake responsible for the bite was captured and euthanized. Eastern diamondback rattlesnakes are common in the Southeastern United States and are the largest rattlesnake species, with a bite that can be fatal in 10% to 20% of cases if left untreated. Martin County, where the incident occurred, is located on Florida's Atlantic coast, just north of Palm Beach. The driver's name and age were not disclosed in the report............This from Fox 5  Please be careful around snakes. As it starts to get cold, they will try to find warmer places to lie. Shaw was fatally shot in May at the Walden Ridge Apartments during an attempted home invasion. Police initially arrested Jaiden Colon-Crawford shortly after the shooting, followed by David Travis and Cibias Vieira in June. All four individuals face charges of murder, aggravated assault, and burglary. Court documents indicate that items including a black safe containing approximately $300, a pair of shoes, and an AR-15 rifle were taken from the apartment during the incident. Helton has been arrested and is facing multiple charges after allegedly sending inappropriate photos to an individual he believed to be a minor and traveling to Georgia to meet them. The charges against Helton include criminal attempted aggravated child molestation, electronic enticement, and obscene materials. Upon his arrest, authorities also discovered methamphetamine and two glass smoking devices in his possession. Helton, who hails from Huntsville, came to Floyd County in Georgia to meet the individual he thought was a child under 16, engaging in explicit online conversations and sending inappropriate photos. We all know how wonderful and beneficial breastfeeding is for mothers and babies. However, mothers don't all experience the same breastfeeding journey. For some, it's straightforward and natural, while others experience a lot of struggles and even pain. Some women are surrounded by a lot of encouragement and support, and other women aren't. It can be very discouraging when breastfeeding doesn't happen as easily as you hoped, but we're going to talk about it — the benefits of breastfeeding for mother and baby, the history of breastfeeding, the root causes of disparities in breastfeeding, and so much more. Today, we have the privilege of having Dr. Cameual Wright join us on our show. An OBGYN by trade, Dr. Wright is currently the ​​Vice President and Market Chief Medical Officer at CareSource. She leads clinical initiatives to ensure vulnerable populations receive accessible, affordable, high-quality, and high-value healthcare. She is a passionate advocate for the care of women and children and health equity. Today Dr. Wright is here to discuss everything about breastfeeding. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recently updated its guidelines around breastfeeding, now supporting continued breastfeeding of a child until two years old or older. As the U.S. continues to face a shortage in infant formula, and with these updated guidelines, it's of the utmost importance now for mothers to be informed on breastfeeding. We're grateful to Dr. Wright for sharing informative and helpful information with us on this episode.

Recent studies from across the country have helped solidify the link between housing instability—for example, substandard conditions, homelessness or needing to move regularly—and poor infant health. In a pilot program based in Ohio called Healthy Beginnings at Home, organizers wanted to test the impact of providing pregnant women struggling to find stable homes with rental assistance and other services to secure their housing situations. In the group of mothers in the pilot program, there were no infant deaths, and there were more full-term healthy births than in a control group. The pilot group also saw shorter stays in neo-natal intensive care and a reduced need for emergency health care.   The Indiana University Richard M. Fairbanks School of Public Health at IUPUI has received a five-year, $2.4 million federal grant to launch an initiative to reduce Indianapolis' infant mortality rate. And it specifically will address housing instability. Called the Housing Equity for Infant Health Initiative, the program will provide support for pregnant women and mothers with infants under 1 year old. The organizers then will evaluate the program's impact on birth outcomes and health care costs.   CareSource, a not-for-profit that provides health care insurance coverage through public programs including Medicaid and Medicare, was a key participant in the Ohio-based pilot of Healthy Beginnings at Home. It is also a key player in bringing Healthy Beginnings at Home to this Initiative in Indianapolis. A second major piece of the initiative is focused on health justice. Led by the Indiana Justice Project, it will combine legal education, direct legal services, strategic litigation, and advocacy to improve both housing stability and housing conditions for pregnant Hoosiers.   In this week's edition of the IBJ Podcast, host Mason King digs into the details with two guests: Dr. Cameual Wright, an OBGYN and vice president and market chief medical officer with CareSource; and Jack Turman. He's the director of the Housing Equity for Infant Health Initiative and the Grassroots Maternal and Child Health Initiative, as well as a professor in the Fairbanks School of Public Health. The American Academy of Pediatrics updated its guidelines for mothers who breastfeed for the first time in over a decade. (Kentucky News Connection) - High volumes and tech glitches have led to an extended deadline for Kentuckians to secure health coverage on the state's marketplace, 'kynect.gov.' Kentucky Voices for Health's Outreach Coordinator Priscilla Easterling explained residents have until January 31 to compare state-managed health-care options, apply for coverage and complete the enrollment process all on one platform. "Four out of every five Kentuckians could get a plan for $10 or less," said Easterling. "And that's primarily because of these increased subsidies." She added that anyone considering coverage can reach out to their local "kynector" through the online portal or by calling 1-855-459-6328 to get help finding a plan. Kynectors are available at no cost in every county to answer questions and help people sign up for coverage. Residents in almost every county can find subsidized coverage through Anthem and CareSource. Easterling said the natural disaster last month prompted the state to extend the deadline. "There have also been disasters all throughout the state, with the tornadoes and flooding," said Easterling. "And there have been some sort of technical issues with Kynect, that the state has been really great about working through." She also added that this year Kynect offers a vision plan for Kentuckians needing eye exams, glasses or other eye-related care. "Right now with the American Rescue Plan Act, and the increased subsidies," said Easterling, "it's a really great time to shop. Things are way more affordable than they have been in previous years." According to federal data, more than 13 million people have signed up for 2022 health-care coverage so far, outpacing previous years. This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette digital news desk and I'm here with your update for Thursday, September 30. There will be a chance for rain Thursday, although it appears to be much more likely on Friday. According to the National Weather Service there will be a 10 percent chance of showers in the Cedar Rapids area after 4 p.m. and a 30 percent chance after 7 p.m. Besides that it will be mostly sunny, with a high near 85 degrees. Thursday night it will be partly cloudy, with a low around 64 degrees. The availability of intensive care unit beds in Iowa is at the lowest level since the COVID-19 pandemic began in March of 2020. As of Wednesday, 163 ICU beds were available statewide, an all-time low according to new coronavirus data from the Iowa Department of Public Health. A week ago, there were 182 available beds. In slightly more positive news, while the state still continues to pile on new cases, the rate appears to have stabilized for the moment. Iowa reported 10,812 new COVID-19 over the past week, compared to the 12,163 new cases reported last Wednesday. The state's seven-day positivity rate was 9.5 percent, slightly lower than last week's 9.6 percent. Although the ICU bed situation remains dire, the number of people hospitalized with COVID dropped slightly. In total, 624 people were hospitalized with the virus as of Wednesday, compared to the 638 hospitalizations reported last week. Given the staffing concerns at a University of Iowa hospital facing the confluence of surging patient demand and a frazzled workforce, administrators announced Wednesday they're doubling extra shift premium pay for inpatient nurses and respiratory therapists over the next seven weeks. According to a message from UI Health Care's Chief Nursing Executive Kimberly Hunter and Human Resources Associate Vice President Jana Wessels, the extra shift premium differential will increase from $15 to $30 an hour beginning Sunday and going through Nov. 21. The boost in pay comes as health care employee burnout has emerged as among the biggest challenges of this wave of COVID-19 infections. The prolonged stress has led health care providers to struggle to adequately keep staff. An out-of-state company hopes to become the newest insurer for Iowans under the state's Medicaid and Children's Health Insurance Program, also known as CHIP. The Dayton, Ohio-based health care company CareSource announced its intent to submit a bid for consideration to join Iowa's $6 billion program as state officials conduct their search for another managed-care organization later this year. MCOs are private insurance companies that deliver health care services to poor and disabled Iowans through a contract with the state. Medicaid health benefits in Iowa currently are administered by two managed-care organizations — Amerigroup and Iowa Total Care. Even after a sometimes tumultuous five years of the privatized Iowa Medicaid program, CareSource officials say they are excited to help Iowa “re-imagine what Medicaid can do for Iowans.” A former Eldridge police officer has been arrested for allegedly sexually abusing a 14-year-old girl while on-duty. 24-year-old Andrew Patrick Denoyer resigned Monday and was taken into custody Tuesday night by agents with the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation. Denoyer was booked into the Scott County Jail with a $10,000, cash-only bond. The assault happened May 1, while Denoyer was employed and on-duty as an Eldridge police officer, according to an arrest affidavit. He's charged with third-degree sexual abuse, a Class C felony under Iowa law that carries a prison sentence of 10 years. Hundreds of vehicles converged on the parking lot of the Wright State University Nutter Center on Aug. 23 to receive fresh produce. For the sixth straight year Wright State hosted The Dayton Foodbank’s distribution pickup for Greene County. CareSource provided the volunteers. The Dayton Foodbank serves as the primary source of food for the hunger relief network in the Miami Valley. About 95,000 pounds of fresh produce were distributed to 497 Greene County families during the event. “We’re always excited that Wright State is willing to partner with us and let us use the Nutter Center parking lot at no cost,” said Lora Davenport, advocacy program manager at The Foodbank. On Aug. 12, 400 families filed into the Wright State University Nutter Center parking lot. One by one the trunks of their cars were filled with vegetables that were grown by Ohio farmers. The Dayton Foodbank provided the produce, Caresource the volunteers and Wright State’s Nutter Center the venue. This was the second straight year that Wright State welcomed the Dayton Foodbank’s distribution pick up in Greene County. “We always want to be a part in the community,” said Jim Brown, the Nutter Center’s executive director. “Wright State University along with the Nutter Center folks have been so generous and they let us take over their parking lot for a few hours,” said Lora Davenport, Dayton Foodbank community relations manager. The Dayton Foodbank serves as the primary source of food for the hunger relief network in the Miami Valley. Hundreds of Wright State students and alumni attended Career Fair Spring 2016 in the Student Union March 9, eager to meet business recruiters looking to hire them. Students had the opportunity to engage with over 100 regional companies, including Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Speedway and CareSource. “Every Career Fair that I go to they just keep getting, bigger and bigger, and they keep having greater companies come every year,” said Dominique Woods, a junior English major. “I find that the students are well prepared and energized,” said Manuel Gomez Jr., of National Air and Space Intelligence Center.
