On September 15, 1993, two gunmen entered a home in Detroit, Michigan, and murdered Lavonda Brown and her son, 20-year old Douglas Williams. Detroit police rounded up a number of suspects, questioning them for hours, including Wilson Rivera. Wilson had a solid alibi for that night. Not only that - the shooter had actually confessed to Wilson that he'd done it. “I asked Roger, like, what's going on?” Wilson recalls. “And he explained to me what had actually taken place with the murder. I'm assuming the facts are gonna bear me out.” But one by one, the other suspects were dropped from the investigation. By the time the trial began, Wilson was the only one left. Welcome, cats and kittens, to another episode of The Lawcast. This time our hosts cover Bound for Glory 2010, the night we learned the meaning of 10/10/10 and the identity of "They."It's the Hogan/Bischoff era of TNA, which brought great promise but unfortunately greater failure. They tried to go head to head with WWE and were forced to retreat after only a few weeks. They brought in huge names but ultimately squandered them. And here they try to recreate the birth of the NWO to limited (at best) success. But this show has all sorts of interesting things going on: a very young version of The Young Bucks, a strong Jay Lethal vs. Douglas Williams match, the ECW reunion, Kurt Angle's possible retirement and the mystery of who (or what) is "They."

Douglas Williams was born August 9th, 1955, in Zachary, Louisiana, to Laura Williams and Robert Williams, Sr. The sixth of eight children, he grew up in a poor but happy household and began playing baseball, football, and basketball at an early age. Doug began playing football seriously at Chaneyville High School, but did not appreciate being inserted at linebacker, where he disliked the rough nature of the position. After his switch to quarterback, Williams quickly ditched baseball and in his senior year, he’d throw for 1,180 yards at 22 touchdowns.

I actually grew up in, was born and raised in Portland, Oregon. That's where I live now. I've lived in the Pacific Northwest, my entire life, mainly in Portland and Seattle. And yeah, I didn't really, I kind of came to this work. I sort of fell into it. A lot of, a lot of different things sort of brought me to this place. But I mean initially like, gosh, there's so many, there's so many places I could go. Did you go to Portland State University to their conflict resolution program. Like, do you know that they have a program there? I applied to go there and then I could never come up with the funding. And it's really hard to find a job in Portland. Yeah. Oh my gosh. It is so hard to find a job here. I hear that for sure. You can't even be a substitute teacher without a master's degree or at least that's what they told me. I don't know That, that, that sounds right. No, I did not. I have not attended that program. I've heard about it. And I think that like, conceptually, it seems really good. I have a lot of friends, obviously you've gotten to Portland State, so yeah. How did you get into this work? I might end up there. I've been talking to the Dean of the School of Public Health about like going into that program. So yeah, it was, it was journey. So I think that the thing that really kind of kicked it off for me was when I got pregnant with my oldest child, I started doing all this research around birth outcomes for black mothers and they were abysmal. So essentially finding out black mothers are three to four times as likely to die from pregnancy related complications than white moms. And black infants are like twice as likely as white infants today. And like the first 30 days of life. And that really kind caught my attention, made me really nervous for obvious reasons. And then when I was pregnant with my second, that is when the Ferguson uprising happened as a response to Michael Brown being murdered. And that was kind of when I was like, okay, this seems important. Like I need to start speaking out about this issue and then fast forward another two years or so two, three years. I'm trying to remember, I guess it was probably two years. I ended up getting a job at a, in a neuroscience lab at OHSU here in Portland and it's a super diverse lab and the PI is black and a lot of the post-docs were, were people of color. And a lot of the work that was being done there was around racism and implicit bias. And it was just a really incredible learning experience even though I was working and not like in the, in the actual med school program. But that gave me a lot of, a lot more information and sort of, kind of, it started to like back up what I had been learning sort of on my own. And yeah, so I just sort of, I just sort of like fell into this. I had been very vocal on Twitter and like after Michael Brown was murdered. and I ended up losing like probably 60% or so of my Twitter followers. Cause people did not like what I had to say. So, but yeah, eventually over time people started paying attention to like what I was putting out into the world and yeah, I've actually been able to transition and do this full time now. White Homework Podcast (https://www.toriglass.com/white-homework) which is a lot of fun and that was kind of the point, right. Was to be able to make anti racism, education, not something other Support this podcast

In this episode, we're on the road to trial -- and talking about settlement opportunities that may come up along the way. Who makes the decisions about going to trial vs offering/accepting a settlement? What factors go into those decisions? What's a consent to settle agreement -- and what's the hammer clause that comes with it? If you're definitely headed to trial, how do you prepare -- practically and psychologically? And what can happen if there's a verdict against you and a judgment that exceeds your policy limits? We'll be hearing from two defense attorneys, Dr. William Sullivan (a practicing physician and attorney, who has been a defendant himself) as well as Douglas Williams, Esq, a medical malpractice defense attorney in Baton Rouge, LA, with over 30 years of experience. We'll also hear the story of one physician's case as it progresses from medical encounter all the way to trial.

This week, Roqayah and Kumars welcome back two friends of the show, Douglas Williams and Bryan Conlon, also known as @Cato_of_Utica on Twitter. Douglas and Bryan, the proprietors of the Southern-focused labor organizing blog The South Lawn, catch up with Roqayah and Kumars, venting about the media mourning Barbara Bush before sharing their insight into the recent wave of teachers’ strikes across the country. The crew discusses how they negotiate the tension between “meeting people where they’re at” on the one hand, and on the other hand, building an intersectional left in solidarity with all oppressed and marginalized people. Douglas and Bryan debate the importance of elections, particularly for leftist organizers interested in building a broad movement for social justice. We revisit their 2013 article for Facing South, “Creating a culture of unionism in the South”, and discuss its relevance to the labor actions we are seeing nationwide. Bryan and Douglas also share their thoughts on what people need to be doing to keep up the momentum from these strikes, transforming otherwise isolated labor actions into a mass movement for social and economic justice. Finally, the crew discusses Janus vs. AFSCME, the national “right to work” case that would undercut unions on a federal level, and what will be needed to revitalize the labor movement in the face of that impending consolidation of corporate anti-union reaction. You can follow Bryan on Twitter @Cato_of_Utica, and follow both their work @TheSouthLawn. Don't forget to support The South Lawn on Patreon. Hosts Rania Khalek and Kevin Gosztola highlight previous clips from the show in this "Best Of" episode that features: Nima Shirazi, Douglas Williams, Vivek Chibber, and Donna Murch.
Douglas Williams, a writer for the TheSouthLawn.org, returns to the show to talk about Bill Clinton's rant against Black Lives Matter protesters in Philadelphia. We discuss the crime bill in the 1990s. We discuss how the Clinton campaign has used African Americans against each other and how the Democratic primary race has perverted the concept of diversity. Williams calls this the "cognitive dissonance election," and we explore this idea during the interview.
Douglas Williams, a writer at TheSouthLawn.org and a doctoral student at Wayne State University in Detroit, is our guest this week. We talk to him about Bernie Sanders, Black Lives Matter, and the critique of Bernie Sanders not talking about race enough. He discusses how Democratic presidential candidates are using the "Black Lives Matter" mantra to make their campaigns relevant. We highlight Bernie Sanders' record in the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, which played a key role in the civil rights movement. We also talk about the problems the movement has with solidarity organizing and the role of white "allies" in organizing against institutional racism.
