On January 6, 2021, we watched on live television as Donald Trump and several Republican members of Congress incited a violent attempted overthrow of our democracy. This insurrection led to several deaths, including police officers who later died by suicide. When Joe Biden was sworn in as President in January 2021, Democrats controlled both chambers of Congress. Instead of using their time in power to pass a resolution or bill banning Trump and his supporters from holding office under the 14th Amendment's "insurrection clause" (Section 3), they held hearings that concluded with a report and a referral to the Department of Justice for possible criminal prosecution. In the 2022 midterms, Democrats lost the House due to America's worsening gerrymandering crisis. Attorney General Merrick Garland waited two years to appoint Special Prosecutor Jack Smith. While some credit the Democrats' January 6 committee for prompting Garland to take action, the reality is that both Democrats and Garland wasted valuable time. In the four years since January 6, 2021, no resolution or bill was passed in Congress to enforce the insurrection clause of the 14th Amendment. Instead, a group of voters and legal experts attempted to bar Trump from the ballot in Colorado, leading to legal cases such as Trump v. Anderson. In early 2024, the Supreme Court ruled that states could not bar federal candidates, and that applying the 14th Amendment was up to Congress. So, why didn't Democrats act in 2021 and 2022 when they had two years to enforce the U.S. Constitution? We need an honest accounting of how an insurrectionist will be president just four years after leading a violent attempt to overthrow our democracy. Democrats deferred to Merrick Garland, who then deferred to Jack Smith, who ultimately dismissed his Trump cases in November 2024, after Trump won one of the closest elections in U.S. history. This election took place amid rampant disinformation and the consolidation of far-right media, including Elon Musk's takeover of Twitter, turning it into a platform for (pro-Trump and Russia) disinformation–the largest in the world. At the same time, Republicans and the Supreme Court over the years undermined the Voting Rights Act and expanded voter ID laws–a modern day poll tax, disenfranchising 21 million Americans. As Andrea and Terrell discuss in this week's episode, the 2024 election was neither free nor fair. The institutions meant to protect us failed. As Gaslit Nation has long warned, an unpunished attempted coup leads to a successful one. The institutionalists and controlled opposition who enabled this crisis don't realize they are not safe either. Once a dictator is in power, no one can control them. We also point out that George Orwell warned us about fascist bootlickers like Trump/Musk fanboy Lex Fridman, whose three-hour interview with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky can be summed up by Orwell's quote: "Political language is designed to make lies sound truthful and murder respectable, and to give an appearance of solidity to pure wind." Gaslit Nation officially calls on Lex Fridman to stop quoting Orwell on his podcast—Orwell would have hated you. Want to enjoy Gaslit Nation ad-free? Meet rising Democratic Party star Anderson Clayton. At just 26 years old, she is the youngest-ever state party chair, representing the Democrats in the red state of North Carolina. But despite electing Donald Trump in the 2024 election, North Carolina's red days may be soon behind it.Democrats secured the races for governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, and secretary of state in this election. They even won enough seats to end the Republican supermajority in the state legislature. So why did voters elect both Donald Trump and Democrats, at the same time, in November's elections?“I don't think that a political party defines how somebody is going to vote on the ballot. I think that they are looking for a person right now, and that's why it matters the types of candidates that we run,” Clayton tells Mehdi in this wide-ranging interview. While Democrats are playing the blame game on how Kamala Harris lost the election, Clayton says, “I don't think anybody's a lost cause. I actually think after this election cycle, we should be looking at every single person as somebody we're talking to.”But it's not just talking to voters that's key for Democrats moving forward. “We need to run young people,” Clayton explains. She continues, “They're 60% more likely to vote for a young person on the ballot regardless of what political party that they're affiliated with. And I think that we have to look at young people as a voting bloc that wants to see themselves represented.”Many young voters aligned themselves with the Uncommitted movement this election given the genocide in Gaza. While some Democrats blame these voters for the election loss, Clayton believes that Democrats can learn something from it: “It was them using political power in the right way because it's something where it's not discouraging people from the political process. It's saying, ‘No, let's use it to have our voices heard.”' She adds, “That's something where Democrats should be taking it and embracing it … because right now people do not want to build up the Democratic Party. It seems like people are more interested in going around it.”Watch the full interview to hear about political messaging in rural communities, the North Carolina GOP's attempt to curb the incoming governor's powers, and whether she'll throw her hat in the ring for DNC chair. Clayton also reacts to Bernie Sanders' criticism of the Democrats. We are making this fascinating interview free for all subscribers to watch, but please do consider becoming a paid subscriber if you're not already! North Carolina GOP gubernatorial candidate Mark Robinson insists that he did not make a series of perverse comments on a porn website. CNN reports they have found a trove of comments made over the years that are pretty disturbing. In addition to being accused of racially vile comments, the African-American politician is also alleged to have commented that he gets sexually aroused by secretly watching women in showers, and calling himself a “perv” who likes pornography with transgender people ― despite being notorious transphobic. The deadline for Robinson to step away from the North Carolina governor's race passed last night. It is now too late for Republicans to put another candidate on the ballot. With an endorsement from Trump, some in the GOP are concerned the scandal will drag down MAGA aligned candidates. We will run it past journalist and political analyst Michael Shure. And if this is too big of a commitment, I'm always thankful for a simple cup of coffee.]Today, CNN's Andrew Kaczynski and Em Steck dropped a major story detailing North Carolina GOP gubernatorial candidate Mark Robinson's particularly troubling history of online posts in a messaging forum.Made between 2008 and 2012, the posts include Mr. Robinson referring to himself as a “Black Nazi,” expressing support for the reinstatement of slavery, fondly reminiscing when he enjoyed “peeping” on women in public gym showers as a teenager, and admitting that he enjoys watching transgender porn. The first three of these things are completely and undeniably wrong, but, of course, I have a terrible feeling we're about to see a news cycle in which considerable shaming will be projected on Mr. Robinson from various corners for his private porn viewing habits. And that would not only be missing the point but harming trans people in the process.I don't give a damn what any consenting adult is or isn't into, does or doesn't do, when it comes to their sexual interests. It's absolutely none of my business, nor is it anyone else's. It's not my place to judge the consensual and private sexual practices of any other adult. If a non-trans adult has a kink for trans people, I really don't care, and moreover, I really don't wanna know. I would prefer not knowing how they privately fetishize trans folks, and also: I see nothing wrong with them doing what they want in private, so long as they keep it to themselves and act in a consensual manner. The problem here is that central to Mr. Robinson's political brand is an aggressive and cruel dehumanization and shaming of trans people, in addition to the LGBTQ community generally.Mr. Robinson has called for trans women to be arrested for using public women's restrooms and went further than that, stating that if trans people need to use a public restroom, we should “find a corner outside somewhere.”Like dogs, of course.Mr. Robinson has promoted the completely absurd, misogynoir conspiracy theory that former first lady Michelle Obama is secretly a trans woman (he called her a “man”) and implied that she and former president Obama are secretly a gay male couple, slander which is often thrown at Black women public figures. In the aftermath of the Pulse nightclub shooting, in which 49 people were brutally murdered and 53 wounded, Mr. Robinson posted on Facebook: “…homosexuality is still an abominable sin and I WILL NOT join in ‘celebrating gay pride' nor will I fly their sacrilegious flag on my page. Sorry if this offends anyone, but I'm not falling for the media/pop culture ‘okey-doke.'”Mr. Robinson has stated that LGBTQ people are the downfall of civilization and referred to us as “devil worshippers,” which, I must say, as a Christian trans woman, is certainly news to me.This is all in addition to his Holocaust denialism, frequent invocation of horrible antisemitic tropes, beliefs that women should neither have the right to vote nor breastfeed in public, statement that Muslim Americans are “invaders,” and consistently holding that abortion should be entirely outlawed, without any exceptions, despite having paid for an abortion himself. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. There's so much more this sad, cowardly, insecure person has said and done throughout his public life that makes him beyond disqualified, many times over, to run for any elected office. So, am I surprised that Mr. Robinson viciously attacks trans people publicly while enjoying transgender porn privately? Not even a little. It is the opposite of shocking. He is simply part of a long pattern of MAGA extremists who weirdly sexualize the bodies of trans people and are deeply unsettled by their own desires and bizarrely address that internal quagmire by projecting their conditioned self-loathing and resulting rage on those of us who are trans.I don't care about Mr. Robinson's sex life, and I really don't want to know anything about it. And I certainly have no interest in shaming him for his consensual sexual interests, mostly because that would require knowing about them and again: I don't wanna know. Nor do I have the right to know.If we were the last two people on earth, and it were his dying wish to confide in me his transgender kink, I would politely decline, wish him a smooth exit of his own, and mercifully alone, wait for Death's sweet embrace, peacefully and blissfully unaware of his interior life.I just wish he and other Trump acolytes wouldn't feel the need to make their sex lives our business through this constant and cruel projection.Perhaps that's an extraordinary request for extremists like Mr. Robinson, and yet, here I am, naively hoping they'll someday understand such a simple concept.Charlotte's Web Thoughts is a reader-supported publication. Ex-President Donald Trump has emerged victorious in the GOP primary in North Carolina. Fast-moving results on Tuesday evening revealed a clear defeat for his sole competition on the ballot, Nikki Haley. Recently, Haley made the news, dismissing all conjectures of her possibly being a vice-presidential contender alongside Trump. There's no current evidence to suggest Trump's intention to propose the role to Haley. Viewers of Fox News's 'Special Report' witnessed some intriguing questions from the host, Bret Baier, towards Haley regarding her political aspirations. Amidst the evening's proceedings, Baier delved into her potential paths to victory on the crucial Super Tuesday. 'Forecast a scenario where you clinch a win on Super Tuesday?' he probed. Haley's response: 'Let's see how things go. However, often people question my actions. Initially, conjectures suggested I am aiming for the vice-presidential spot. But, the ambiguity around that seems resolved. Now they're speculating—' At this point Baier cut in. Baier interrupted with, 'So, are things in black and white now?' To which Haley strongly retorted, 'There is no underlying political agenda. If there were, I would have exited this political scene long ago.' On being questioned once again about the vice-presidential matter, Haley confirmed, 'Undoubtedly, the matter is settled! I want to stress that I wouldn't engage in this if I was anxious about my political prospects. I would have exited this political scene earlier. Instead, I'm attempting to rouse our nation from its slumber.' Baier shifted the conversation towards Democratic presidential hopeful and Representative Dean Phillips (D-MN), who proposed a prospective 'unity ticket' with Haley playing the role of vice president. 'Dean Phillips, presently part of the Democratic primary – without much luck – but suggesting he would take the role of your vice president if you wish,' Baier remarked. 'Would you consider it?'See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

On the version of Hot off the Wire posted Feb. 13 at 7:15 a.m. CT: HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Parts of the Northeast are preparing for a coastal storm that's expected to dump a foot or more of snow and pack 60 mph winds in some areas. Hazardous driving conditions, school closings and flight cancellations are predicted for when the storm hits Tuesday, along with possible power outages. The nation’s largest school system in New York City said it was switching classes to remote learning and closing its buildings for the day. Boston schools will be closed. Non-essential Massachusetts state employees were told not to go to their workplaces. Some of the highest snowfall totals, 12 to 15 inches, were forecast for the northern New York City suburbs and southwestern Connecticut. NEW YORK (AP) — Authorities say one person was killed and five others wounded following a dispute between two groups of teenagers at a New York City subway station Monday at the start of the evening rush hour. The gunfire broke out on an elevated train platform in the Bronx at around 4:30 p.m. Monday, a time when stations throughout the city are filled with kids coming home from school and many workers are beginning their evening commute. Officials say a 34-year-old man was killed. The wounded included a 14-year-old girl and a 15-year-old boy, and three adults, ages 28, 29 and 71. Authorities said some of the victims were believed involved in the dispute and others were waiting for the train. ATLANTA (AP) — Family and friends are gathering in Georgia this week as funerals begin for three Army Reserve soldiers killed in a recent drone attack in Jordan. A funeral is scheduled Tuesday for 46-year-old Staff Sgt. William Jerome Rivers at a church in Carrollton, west of Atlanta. Services for Sgt. Breonna Moffett of Savannah and Sgt. Kennedy Sanders of Waycross, Georgia, are planned for Saturday. The three citizen-soldiers received posthumous promotions after they were were killed in a Jan. 28 drone attack on a U.S. base near Jordon's border with Syria. They were assigned to the Army Reserve's 926th Engineer Battalion based at Fort Moore, Georgia. NEW DELHI (AP) — Indian police have fired tear gas and detained some farmers who tried to break barricades blocking their way to New Delhi in a protest march. The farmers want assured crop prices, in a repeat of 2021 protests when they camped on New Delhi's outskirts for more than a year. The protests forced the government to repeal agriculture laws that farmers said would harm their incomes. The government said at that time that it would set up a panel of farmers and government officials to find ways to ensure support prices for all farm produce. Multiple meetings since then have made no progress. The march comes months before a national election in which Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to win a third term. NEW YORK (AP) — Donald Trump is calling for a leadership change at the Republican National Committee in an attempt to install a new slate of loyalists — including his daughter-in-law — at the top of the GOP’s political machine even before he formally secures the party’s next presidential nomination. Trump outlined his plans on social media Monday night. They carry no official weight until he is the party’s presumed presidential nominee. Current RNC Chair Ronna McDaniel says she has no plans to leave the committee until at least after South Carolina’s Feb. 24 primary election. Still, Trump is calling for McDaniel to be replaced by Michael Whatley, the North Carolina GOP chairman. The new co-chair, Trump said, should be his daughter-in-law Lara Trump. WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden has launched a task force aimed at addressing the "systemic” problem of mishandling classified information during presidential transitions. Monday's action comes days after a Justice Department special counsel’s sharply critical report said he had done just that. The Presidential Records Transition Task Force will study past transitions to determine best practices for safeguarding classified information from an outgoing administration. It will also assess the need for changes to existing policies to prevent the removal of sensitive information that by law should be kept with the National Archives and Records Administration. Special counsel Robert Hur's report listed dozens of sensitive documents found at Biden’s home in Delaware, and at his former Washington office. WARSAW, Poland (AP) — Donald Trump says he once warned that he would allow Russia to do whatever it wants to NATO member nations that are “delinquent” in devoting 2% of their gross domestic product to defense. Trump’s comment on Saturday represented the latest instance in which the former president and Republican front-runner seemed to side with an authoritarian state over America’s democratic allies. NATO members don’t pay to belong and don’t owe the organization anything other than contributions to a largely administrative fund. Trump's frequent complaint has been how much NATO countries put into their own military budgets. The 2% is a voluntary benchmark and no debt or “delinquency” is involved. WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden’s reelection campaign is defending its new TikTok account as a vital way to boost its appeal with young voters. It's doing so even as the Biden administration continues to raise security concerns about whether the popular social media app might be sharing user data with China’s communist government. The campaign says the president’s debut on TikTok on Sunday night has drawn more than 5 million views and counting. White House national security spokesman John Kirby says there are still national security concerns about the use of TikTok on government devices. Super Bowl ratings skyrocket, the Dallas Cowboys name their defensive coordinator, UCLA tabs its next head coach, the Rockets hang on to beat the Knicks, Jen Pawol is about to make baseball history. Correspondent Chuck Freimund reports. RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — A leading Democratic Virginia legislator says proposed legislation to help pave the way for the NBA’s Washington Wizards and NHL’s Washington Capitals to relocate to northern Virginia is dead. Sen. L. Louise Lucas holds great sway in the General Assembly as chair of the Senate Finance & Appropriations Committee. She told reporters Monday morning that Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin had made a series of mistakes in trying to advance the deal through a General Assembly now in full Democratic control after November’s elections. She outlined concerns about the financing structure and said Youngkin had not been negotiating in good faith. A bill is still alive in the House of Delegates but Lucas' remarks are a major setback for the deal. NEW YORK (AP) — Bob Edwards, the news anchor many Americans woke up to as founding host of National Public Radio's “Morning Edition” for nearly a quarter-century, has died. NPR said he died Saturday at age 76, but it had no other details. Edwards joined NPR in 1974, and was the founding voice on “Morning Edition” in 1979. His authoritative baritone made many listeners feel he was older than he was. For 12 years, his interviews with sportscasting legend Red Barber were a regular feature, and they provided the foundation for Edwards' book “Friday with Red: A Radio Friendship.” He was pulled from “Morning Edition” in 2004 just before celebrating a quarter-century on the show, a move that led some listeners to protest. Robert Kennedy Jr.’s presidential ambitions resulted in public family drama after a political action committee aired a Super Bowl ad invoking the Democratic family’s legacy to implicitly compare the independent candidate to his assassinated uncle, President John F. Kennedy. The 30-second spot was financed by the American Values 2024 Super PAC that is backing Kennedy. The ad featured a shortened version of a campaign song that the 35th president used in his 1960 campaign. The spot also mimicked cartoon and newsreel effects using black-and-white pictures of Robert Kennedy Jr. similar to his uncle. One of Robert Kennedy's cousins blasted him for the spot. In a statement on social media, Kennedy apologized to any of his family members who were upset by the ad. NEW YORK (AP) — Plenty of retailers and suppliers are reducing the variety of their offerings to focus instead on what they think will sell best. Stew Leonard’s, a supermarket chain, now has 24 cereal flavors or types, down from 49 in 2019. Coca-Cola has discontinued half its drink brands to 200. Many businesses have decided less is better, justifying their limited selection by asserting shoppers don’t want so much choice. It’s also more profitable for companies because they’re not carrying over as many leftovers that need to be discounted. HOUSTON (AP) — Police say a woman in a trenchcoat opened fire with a long gun inside celebrity pastor Joel Osteen’s Texas megachurch before being gunned down by two off-duty officers who confronted her. The afternoon shooting at the Houston megachurch sent worshippers scrambling out of the building between busy Sunday services. Authorities say the woman was dead and a 5-year-old boy with her was critically wounded by gunfire. They also say a 57-year-old man was wounded. Houston Police Chief Troy Finner praised the officers for their quick actions. Osteen says the shooting could have been much worse if it had happened during the larger 11 a.m. service. WOODBURY, Conn. (AP) — A Connecticut pastor has been arrested on allegations that he sold crystal meth out of his church’s rectory. Police say the reverend of a United Methodist Church in Woodbury was taken into custody Friday after authorities received a tip about the drugs. The pastor was arrested on drug and motor vehicle charges after police say a cooperating witness tipped them off and set up a purported drug deal with the reverend. The pastor was released on $10,000 bail and was ordered to appear in Waterbury Superior Court on Feb. 23. Phone and email messages were left Monday for the pastor and the church. —The Associated Press About this program Host Terry Lipshetz is managing editor of the national newsroom for Lee Enterprises. Today we talk about a new case that the Supreme Court has taken up filed by the North Carolina GOP legislature. The case involves the appeal of the GOP against a ruling of the North Carolina State Supreme Court that struck down the legislature's redistricting map as being unconstitutional due to partisan gerrymandering. Today we discuss the purpose of redistricting, the Electoral College, and the Legal theory of the Independent Legislature Doctrine.
On this Heard Tell Good Talks, guest Brooke Medina returns to Heard Tell to talk the people and politics of North Carolina, specifically new polling about the US Senate race and the GOP primary field. Brooke details the surprising numbers of Trump-endorsed Ted Budd, and what might happen in the next 40 days before voters go to the polls. Also, we talk the overall electoral environment where it is still the economy stupid, but war in Ukraine has changed folks perspective some, Madison Cawthorn and Mark Meadows making national headlines for all the wrong reasons, and more politics from the Old North State. Speaking of Mark Meadows, formerly of congress and CoS to Donald Trump, found some voter fraud in the 2020 election...because he was the one committing it.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/heard-tell/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Democrats on the other hand are running around gerrymandering at full speed to help their party because, as usual, it's never the same rules for the Left. Good news today is that the U.S. Supreme Court has blocked the order for Alabama to redraw its Congressional districts ahead of the coming election. This week, Joshua Holland kicks off the show with a modest rant about the ludicrous idea that social media companies are stifling conservative voices. Then Billy Corriher, author of Usurpers: How voters stopped the GOP takeover of North Carolina's courts, joins us to discuss how North Carolina became the target of a Trumpian putsch years before Trump arrived on the scene, and how the effort was beaten back by a broad pro-democracy coalition. Corriher explains how other red states are following the North Carolina GOP's playbook, and the forces of good should learn from how it was defeated. Finally, as the pundits spin former police officer Eric Adams' win in the Democratic primary for New York Mayor, Daniel Nichanian, founder of The Appeal: Political Report, runs down some big wins for candidates running on Judicial reform.PlaylistAaron Frazer: "Can't Leave It Alone"Durand Jones & The Indications: "Witchoo"Alessia Cara: "I Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues"

Shaun speaks with activist, writer, and Fulbright scholar Bernard Hayman about anti-Blackness, why it's useful to distinguish it from a broader term like "racism," and how easy it is to be passively anti-Black in America. I mentioned in this episode that Microsoft had, at one time, "bailed out" Apple. I got a few things wrong. First, I meant to say "100 million dollars," but said "one million" instead. Both are incorrect; it was $150 million. Second, it turns out that Microsoft's investment was likely not intended to save Apple.
