In the 1970's Jackson Browne was known as one of the originators of the carefree, California classic rock sound with hits like “Doctor My Eyes” and “Running on Empty.” As his career progressed, Jackson Browne's knack for writing soul-searching lyrics turned more political. Browne continues to use his music as a vehicle for change today. His latest album, Downhill From Everywhere, was inspired by a documentary about the Pacific garbage patch and our impact on the planet. On today's episode Bruce Headlam talks to Jackson Browne about how he is able to turn catastrophic headlines into palatable songs. Browne also talks about moving to New York City when he was 18 and how he ended up writing songs for the Velvet Underground's Nico. And Browne remembers the time his former label boss, David Geffen, shut down his attempt to quote the Black Panthers' Bobby Seale in a song.  Jackson Browne is among my all-time favorite singer/songwriters. Saturate Before Using, his 1972 album is all it took. But that was just the beginning. Two years later, 1974 brought us Late For The Sky, a record I'll consistently put into my top 3 albums. While his politics aren't my cup of tea, his talent sure is! Today's title is a snippet from track 1 of his latest album, Downhill From Everywhere - "Still Looking For Something." The entire line is indicative of his creativity. And I knew since I was just little The sharp edges of the world will whittle Your dreams down to shavings at your feet Gonna do my best not to settle I know it's gonna test my mettle Keep my options open, even so I'm hoping The sharp edges of the world will whittle your dreams down to shavings at your feet. Will we do our best not to settle? Good question. Some days you eat the bear, some days the bear eats you. In 1974 I first saw that saying as an album cover by Ian Matthews while visiting Leisure Landing, my favorite record just outside the gates of LSU. Simply put, sometimes you win...sometimes you lose. That's how the sharp edges of the world happen. Sometimes you avoid them. Sometimes you don't. I think Jackson is right though. Mostly, they whittle away. At our dreams and just about everything else we seek. Especially if we don't fight back. Hard. Every day. But there are some other parts of the world that aren't sharp edges. There are some rather pleasant areas of the world that don't whittle. They foster growth, resilience, and change. Truth be told, the sharp edges that can whittle can also serve to provide those valuable things for us if we'll leverage them properly. Struggles and sorrows often define us. Much more so than the joyful moments. After the famed Alabama Crismon Tide football team lost to Texas A&M Aggies, head coach Nick Saban said two things that illustrate the point. "Players have to remember how they feel when they don't have success."  "Sometimes the best lessons you learn are when you do have failings." Saban says it's human nature to be more willing to learn when you don't get things right. It's not just for college football players. Or their coaches. It's true for each of us. We need to remember how we feel when we don't have success. And there's little doubt that the most valuable lessons are those taught to us by failure. Two things - the sharp edges of the world that whittle away our dreams and our response to that reality. Sharp edges are events and circumstances, sometimes the ones resulting from our own behavior, sometimes not. Sharp edges are also people. The people who hate us, who give us no consideration, who show us no compassion, who judge us harshly. So sharp edges might be anything from health concerns, to financial troubles, to grief, to sadness, to sorrow, to struggles of any kind. And they might also be the people who don't have our best interests at heart. Those folks who aren't interested in helping us, but would prefer to hurt us. Whoever you are, wherever you live - you experience both forms of sharp edges of the world. There is no vaccination. Nobody has antibodies that will protect them from such things. No need to enumerate all the ways the world cuts us with sharp edges. We can all prove that truth with our own lives. Our struggles are real. We don't often intentionally go looking for the sharp edges. Mostly, we run into them. Or they run into us. But years ago I was reading about various hustlers and con men who start each day at zero, then work like fiends during the day to score big - to get as much money as they can - only to end the day back at zero. These folks are different than most (thankfully). They go out each day looking for the sharp edges, willing to end their day cut to pieces, but only after doing some cutting of their own. These folks refuse to live conventional, responsible lives.

Jackson Browne began making music in the 1960s. He played a big part in the Laurel Canyon Californian music scene of the 70s with the Eagles, Linda Ronstadt and The Byrds all recording his songs. His solo albums and songs continue to provide the soundtrack to our lives from his eponymous 1972 debut to his 2021 release, Downhill From Everywhere. In this special programme Ricky Ross explores Jackson Browne's songbook and the stories behind his classic songs as well as the deeper cuts and discovers why they resonate with so many people. Jackson describes working with Stephen Stills, Lowell George from Little Feat, David Crosby, Graham Nash, Gregg Allman and record producer Jon Landau.

Almost 50 years on since the release of his debut solo album, Jackson Browne discusses with Brian Wise his new album Downhill From Everywhere as well as talking about his early career. This extended conversation also includes excerpts from the new album and other eras of Browne's career.   

Pressure. Worry. Anxiety. Fear. Dread. The human brain - 3 pounds and 15 centimeters of incredible processing power. About the size of two clenched fists, which may be a fitting comparative measurement for many of us. Lots of us go through life clenching our minds. That's the opposite of having or getting our minds right. I think about the Old Testament figure, King Saul. Early in his reign, with Samuel as his mentor, Saul was a great warrior for Israel. He conquered enemies and made progress in creating a nation out of the twelve tribes. Then David entered the picture. Saul began to show signs of emotional distress and anxiety. According to 1 Samuel 16:14, it was made worse because God's Spirit left him due to his own self-centeredness. Ironically, only David's harp playing drove the demon away (verse 23). Growing up it was my first encounter with the power of music in helping us get our minds right. I've wondered what influence that has on my lifelong love affair with music. I know this much...my life would be significantly less calm, less thoughtful, and less whatever else might describe good feelings without it. As I write this I'm listening to Jackson Browne's latest record, Downhill From Everywhere. No, I don't agree with his liberal politics, but that's just a perspective rather than some agenda 'cause I'm apolitical. Jackson is very political, but I love his voice and the music. I can overlook what I disagree with and enjoy the man's talent. When it comes to music, I'm able to keep my mind right. ;) I can't think of any phrase involving "getting your mind right" without thinking of Strother Martin's character in Cool Hand Luke starring Paul Newman. Paul Newman's character, Luke, is on a prison chain gang. He's popular with the other inmates. He's also constantly escaping, but he refused to break under the pressure of the warden, played by Strother Martin. But the guards and the warden are constantly exhorting Luke to "get his mind right." Translation, stop giving us trouble. Just do as you're told. Well, I don't mean it that way. So let's talk about what it really means to have your mind right by first talking about having your mind wrong. P.S. There is a place where I'm better able to get my mind right. A TOMA UNO le quedan dos días de emisión en Radio 3. Hoy y mañana. Este lunes comienza la programación de verano y, además, la Dirección de la emisora me ha comunicado que el programa no estará en la nueva temporada. Es cuestión de edad, no de audiencia. En la radio, desde que me puse por primera vez delante de un micrófono hace 49 años, siempre he sido autónomo. Nunca he sido personal fijo de ninguna emisora. Por eso soy yo el que decido cuándo jubilarme. Pues ya que nos quedan simplemente un par de horas de estar juntos en el porche, hemos querido aprovecharlas. Por eso hemos querido comenzar el programa con nuestra felicitación por su cumpleaños número 50 a Alison Krauss, regresa junto a Union Station con el álbum Paper Airplane, del décimocuarto de la carrera de la artista de Decatur, en Illinois. Para cerrar el disco seleccionó una legendaria canción de Jackson Browne que cerró también su álbum de debut editado en 1972. Hablamos de “My Opening Farewell” (Mi despedida inicial) que suena perfecta para un programa como el de hoy. El músico ha elegido Still Looking From Something” para abrir uno de los discos siempre esperados de este 2021. Es Downhill From Everywhere, que acaba de editar y que pudimos anticipar desde mediados del pasado mes de mayo. Con él tenemos la sensación de recuperar los mejores momentos de sus primitivos álbumes, esos que empezaron a darnos un respiro en 1972 con su maravilloso debut. La actualidad más cercana nos reencuentra con Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band y la publicación de un nuevo documental, The Legendary 1979 No Nukes Concerts que recoge las actuaciones de Springsteen y la E. Street Band de los días 21 y 22 de septiembre de 1979 con el audio remezclado y remasterizado a partir de la película original de 16 mm de entonces. Con el Boss están Roy Bittan, Clarence Clemons, Danny Federici, Garry Tallent, Steve Van Zandt y Max Weinberg. En el concierto del primero de estos dos días se escuchó por primera vez en directo "The River", tal y como hemos oído. El pasado domingo pudimos ver el esperado concierto de Bob Dylan, Shadow Kingdom, y como era de esperar fue distinto a lo que podíamos imaginarnos. El bardo se refugió en una banda de cinco jóvenes músicos anónimos y, además, enmascarados, tomando el escenario de un supuesto Bon Bon Club en Marsella. De esta manera pudimos escuchar “Forever Young” con arreglos minimalistas en los que destaca su voz y su letra. En este tiempo de despedidas también hay tiempo para los regresos. Y otro de los grandes veteranos, David Crosby, que a mitad de agosto cumplirá 80 años, acaba de regalarnos For Free, cuyo tema central es una entrañable forma de refugiarse de nuevo en la música de su buena amiga Joni Mitchell. En esta versión del veterano músico de Los Angeles ha contado con el apoyo de Sarah Jarosz. Brandi Carlile tiene un nuevo álbum, In These Silent Days, que ha sido producido por Dave Cobb y Shooter Jennings y que aparecerá el próximo 1 de octubre. La propia Brandi, sus inseparables hermanos Hanseroth y Dave Cobb han sido los compositores de “Right On Time”, su tema de apertura. Mientras, “Help!”de los Beatles ha vuelto a la actualidad gracias a Margo Price, una de las voces más sobresalientes del presente de la Americana, que acaba de editar un Ep de tres canciones, Live From the Other Side, grabado en directo. La nueva canción de la tejana Bri Bagwell, una de las vocalistas femeninas favoritas del Lone Star State incide en que no hay nada que una más a las personas que compartir gustos musicales. Así es "Heroes", un tema de tintes tradicionales. Originario del valle de Shenandoah, en West Virginia, John R. Miller es un músico capaz de caminar por todos paisajes sonoros que proponen las distintas variantes del country, el blues y el rock edificado desde las raíces, aunque sus primeros escarceos tuvieron que ver con el punk. Su álbum Depreciated es una especie de interrogatorio sobre todo lo imaginable gracias a historias que surgen desde la introspección más absoluta. Y ahí está “Faustina”, la representación de una vida en constante movimiento. Echando una mirada, simplemente, al año y medio anterior nos encontramos la respuesta de muchos de nuestros artistas favoritos a la pandemia Y Rodney Crowell es el que más ha profundizado en su situación personal. “This Body Isn’t All There Is to Who I Am” es la canción que lo cierra con un ánimo valiente y reflexivo que se enmarca en su estado actual. También en la despedida de nuestro penúltimo programa en Radio 3 podemos estrenar un nuevo álbum de los que merece la pena escuchar con especial detenimiento. Es el próximo proyecto del californiano Jeff Espinoza, que tras debutar en solitario en 2015, ahora lo hace como líder de los Gypsy Runners, una banda que completan Gaby Jogeix, Gonzalo Peñalosa, Manuel Bagües y Ezequiel Navas. En este disco también ha contado con invitados como Ramón Arroyo de Los Secretos, Garrett Wall de Track Dogs o Irene Valverde, entre otros. The network still features hosts skeptical of the vaccine. The news comes as some GOP lawmakers have also started to encourage vaccination. NPR's David Folkenflik reports.

Jackson Browne va a publicar su nuevo álbum la semana que viene, el primero con canciones nuevas en siete años. Conectamos con Los Ángeles, California, para charlar con él y escuchar una actuación acústica de uno de los nuevos temas. El disco anterior se llama “Standing In The Breach”, toda una declaración de un hombre eternamente comprometido, con su verdad latiendo en cada verso desde aquel “These Days” que escribió a los 16 y que la inolvidable Nico grabó a finales de los sesenta. Y el nuevo álbum se titula “Downhill From Everywhere” en cuya portada ya nos manifiesta su habitual preocupación puesta al día por la conservación del planeta y los usos que amenazan la misma, como los plásticos. De hecho el pasado 22 de mayo intervino en el Plastic Pollution Concert junto a Ben Harper, Inara George, Mandy Moore y Taylor Goldsmith (Dawes), Sara y Sean Watkins, y Keb’ Mo’ “for a plastic free future”, por un futuro sin plástico. Escuchar su voz de terciopelo y comprobar que el tiempo no ha arañado sus cuerdas vocales, que las diez canciones nuevas resuenan al mejor Browne que nos hechizó en los 70... Paul offers highlights from his exclusive interview with Jackson. Paul also speaks with music writers and historians who reflect on the landmark 1971 song and album by the late Marvin Gaye called "What's Going On?" which opened the doors for many African-American artists to openly express outrage over their repressed place in society - as well as addressing concerns over the Vietnam War and the decay of the environment. And finally we'll remember the late activist and singer/songwriter Harry Chapin who died in a car accident in July 1981.

Dentro de poco más de un mes se edita el décimo quinto álbum de Jackson Browne, Downhill From Everywhere, el primero en seis años y que supone un regreso al intimismo que nos dejaron sus primitivos trabajos, hace casi medio siglo. Es una metáfora de la propia vida representada en la ciudad de Los Ángeles que hoy abre nuestro programa. Rodney Crowell ha cantado a su amnesia total transitoria, un episodio benigno y por suerte temporal de pérdida de memoria, que sufrió en plena pandemia. Es uno de los temas más introspectivos de su nuevo disco que resume cuestiones relativas a encontrar respuestas y consuelo en el caos. Songs and Music from She's the One que Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers pusieron en el mercado en 1996 será reeditada a primeros de julio con cuatro temas inéditos. Esta vez, el disco pasa a llamarse Angel Dream, aunque hoy mismo está en el mercado de manera especial para celebrar el Record Store Day en una edición limitada en vinilo de color azul. Viajar es una de las grandes recompensas de un músico, y Travis Linville lo sabe bien. Con JD McPherson como productor de su nuevo álbum, I’m Still Here, inyecta el afán de volver a la carretera sin mirar atrás, bajar las ventanillas del coche, subir el volumen… y recuperar el tiempo perdido. Producido por Sadler Vader, que se ha llevado sus compañeros de la 400 Unit de Jason Isbell, incluyendo al líder, Zach Schmidt se ha descolgado con un álbum de extraordinaria solidez donde encontramos canciones que se escuchan en bucle. Pero no olvidemos a Brock Gonyea desde las tierras del estado de Nueva York compartiendo canciones del presente que parecen temas perdidos en grabaciones de décadas casi olvidadas. “We’ll Be Alright”, una oda al amor, es muy posiblemente la canción del nuevo álbum de Lukas Nelson & Promise Of The Real en la que su líder se manifiesta más cercano a las formas de su padre, Willie Nelson. A Few Stars Apart, su nuevo disco, se editó ayer incidiendo en la conexión entre todos nosotros, dando una importancia fundamental a la familia, los amigos y el propio yo. Otra de las bandas que se ha convertido en habitual del Bunker de Bruce Robison es Reckless Kelly, que comandan los hermanos Braun. Su reciente grabación analógica de “Thinkin' Bout You All Night” nos devuelve la sensación de normalidad. Es algo que también ocurre con The Flatlanders, el trío que conforman desde hace décadas Joe Ely, Jimmie Dale Gilmore y Butch Hancock . "She Belongs to Me" es una de las canciones que se han incluido en Treasure of Love, su primer disco en más de una década. Asleep At The Wheel, la mejor banda de carretera de la historia y toda una leyenda para los amantes del Western swing, quiere celebrar su medio siglo de existencia con Better Times, un doble álbum que se editará en octubre pero que se anticipa ahora con ese tema central y dos de apoyo que transmiten esperanza en estos tiempos. Incluso Ed Jurdi y Gordy Quist de Band of Heathens han colaborado con una canción que muestra su versatilidad. Y para cerrar el programa de hoy hemos contado con The Shootouts, el grupo establecido al noroeste del estado de Ohio que hace guiños a las canciones que sonaban en las radios de country music en la década de los 90, como es evidente en "Saturday Night Town". Liderados por Tylor Ketchum y con una formación de cuarteto que completan sus dos hermanos y su suegro, Tylor & The Train Robbers se mueven por todo el país desde que se crearon en 2014 pero con su base de operaciones siempre en su ciudad natal de Boise, en Idaho. Su tercer disco, producido por Cody Braun de Reckless Kelly, abre el tiempo de TOMA UNO, con un montón de novedades encima de la mesa. Leftover Feelings es una de las grandes grabaciones de este 2021 y sería desde luego extraño que a finales de año no siguiera siendo uno de nuestros favoritos. Lo han firmado John Hiatt y la Jerry Douglas Band con una capacidad extraordinaria para experimentar sonidos y buscar colaboraciones a veces impensables. En esta ocasión todos se reunieron en el RCA Studio B de Nashville para grabar como se hacía pues hace seis décadas, aunque su resultado es de lo mejor de este siglo XXI.  Entre los muchos muchos regresos que llevamos además tiempo esperando está el de Lukas Nelson & Promise Of The Real con un trabajo que nos lleva esta vez al RCA Studio A donde se encerraron durante tres semanas con el productor Dave Cobb para cantar sobre temas muy cercanos con una grabación totalmente orgánica que utilizó una cinta abierta de 8 pistas, como otra muestra de cómo las nuevas generaciones mantienen la más profunda relación con la tradición musical y a la vez están revitalizando el concepto de country procurando quitar el estigma negativo de la palabra. También han vuelto los Wallflowers, con Jakob Dylan al frente y su primer disco desde 2012, el apoyo vocal de Shelby Lynne en cuatro canciones y un cambio radical en los miembros de la banda. Pero mantienen el contacto y la sintonía con la Americana.  Uno de los discos siempre esperados es el próximo de nuestro buen amigo Jackson Browne, Downhill From Everywhere, que nos devuelve las mejores sensaciones de sus primitivos discos desde aquel maravilloso debut de 1972 que nunca olvidaremos. Hoy hemos podido anticipar hasta dos temas, incluyendo a varios de sus mejores músicos amigos acompañándole. Otro de los grandes veteranos, David Crosby, que a mitad de agosto cumplirá 80 años, también ha regresado con For Free, un disco en el que cuenta con Donald Fagen de Steely Dan y Michael McDonald arropados por excelentes músicos y sonidos que evidencian a atemporalidad de la música. Como ejemplo hemos encontrado el más reciente regalo de Judy Collins, que también fue protagonista de los mejores momentos de Laurel Canyon. Ahora publica una antología con temas de su larga discografía y nuevas grabaciones, con una recreación de "White Bird", que It's A Beautiful Day dejaron para la historia cuando para ir a San Francisco era preciso llevar flores en el pelo.  Pasado mañana, Bob Dylan celebrará su cumpleaños número 80 y en TOMA UNO vamos a escuchar 10 versiones... más una de las que se han convertido en nuestras favoritas a lo largo de los años. Abriendo boca, Chrissie Hynde, líder los Pretenders, y su guitarrista James Brown han estado trabajando juntos en una serie de vídeos que han ido publicando en el canal de Youtube de la banda, dando origen a un álbum de versiones de Bob Dylan grabadas desde la distancia durante el confinamiento. Además, se ha grabado un documental que se estrenará el día del cumpleaños de Dylan. Por otro lado, y también muy cercanos al presente está la sorpresa del nuevo álbum de Scarlet Rivera, la violinista que todos conocimos en el álbum Desire y como miembro de la Rolling Thunder Revue , que por primera vez ha grabado una versión del emblemático "Hurricane".  Con estos dos anticipos, ¿te vas a perder el programa de mañana?.  Escuchar audio
