Send us a textWhat if you could step into the mind of David Chase and uncover the origins of The Sopranos? Join us on the Oh Brother Podcast as we dissect the new documentary "Wise Guy: David Chase and the Sopranos," directed by Alex Gibney and now streaming on Max. We explore how this two-part series, originally envisioned as a feature film, captures Chase's journey and the show's creation. You'll discover how the documentary's unique set design mirrors Dr. Melfi's office and how "The Sopranos" found renewed life during the COVID-19 quarantine, largely thanks to the "Talking Sopranos" podcast by Michael Imperioli and Steve Schirripa. We then shift gears to discuss James Gandolfini's legacy, particularly through the lens of the Coen Brothers' film "The Man Who Wasn't There." Mistakes and corrections aside, we dive into Gandolfini's illustrious career and the fascinating casting choices that could have altered "The Sopranos" as we know it. Hear about Steve Van Zandt's near-casting as Tony Soprano, Lorraine Bracco's pivotal decision to play Dr. Melfi, and the technological hurdles faced after Nancy Marchand's untimely passing. The discussion also highlights the immense pressure Chase faced to maintain the show's success, fostering a tight-knit, trusting environment with his creative team. Finally, we delve into the complexity of Carmela Soprano and examine the tragic death of James Gandolfini. We reflect on the emotional weight of Gandolfini's role, his personal struggles, and the impact of his untimely passing on both the cast and the show. The documentary's innovative style is also a topic of interest, mirroring Tony Soprano's iconic drive while offering insights into David Chase's influences from classic filmmakers. We ponder the controversial ending of "The Sopranos" and speculate on what might have been if Gandolfini were still with us. Tune in for a richer, deeper appreciation of one of television's most groundbreaking series.Actress Karissa Lee Staples Support the showOh Brother Podcast: Subscribe on YouTube Listen on all podcast platforms Follow us on Instagram Leave a 5-star rating/review on Apple Podcasts

A captivating oral history of the iconic music venue the Stone Pony and of the rise, fall, and rebirth of Asbury Park, New Jersey-featuring interviews with Bruce Springsteen, Steve Van Zandt, Southside Johnny, members of the E Street Band and Asbury Jukes, the Ramones, the Jonas Brothers, Jack Antonoff, and other legendary musicians. In 1970, Asbury Park, New Jersey, was ripped apart by race riots that left the once-proud beach town an hour away from Manhattan smoldering, suffering and left for dead.Four years later, a few miles down the coast in Seaside Heights, two bouncers, Jack Roig and Butch Pielka, tired of the daily grind, dreamt of owning their own place. Under-prepared and minimally funded, the two bought the first bar they considered, in a city where no one wanted to be, without setting one foot in the place. They named it the Stone Pony, and turned it into a rock club that Bruce Springsteen would soon call home and a dying town would call its beating heart. But the bar had to fight to survive. Despite its success in launching and attracting rockers like Stevie Van Zandt, "Southside" Johnny Lyon, and Springsteen, the Stone Pony-like everything in Asbury Park for the past half century-could only weather the drags of a depressed city for so long. How did the Stone Pony beat the odds to survive? How did it become an international rock pilgrimage site, not just for fans of Springsteen, but for punk rockers, jam bands, pop, indie, alternative and many other musicians as well? And how did it continue to inspire and influence a hall-of-fame list of New Jersey and national rock stars? The story of the Stone Pony-thrillingly charted in this detailed oral history-is the chronicle of a proud and unique cultural mecca blooming in a down-but-not-yet-out tough town. As Nick Corasaniti reveals, the stories of Asbury Park and the Stone Pony are that of modern America itself-a place of battered hopes, big dreams, and dogged resilience.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

In their freewheeling conversation, Stevie reflects on how his remarkable, up-and-down, 60-year career as a musician, actor, and activist has, time and again, placed him at or near the center of modern culture — and how his proudest achievement to this day is the unlikely, ultimately heroic part he played in freeing Nelson Mandela. “I wasn't bound to a style,” Al Kooper has said. He was talking about his guitar playing but just as easily could have been talking about the totality of Al Kooper, songwriter, musician, singer, producer, band director. “If anything, I was known for being in the right place at the right time and playing the right thing.” Kooper has been at the heart of rock & roll's time/space continuum for much of its history.Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes emerged from the New Jersey Shore in 1974. Though they carried a significant influence (and some key personnel) from Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, the Jukes evolved as more of a white R&B horn band in the Memphis tradition embodied by Stax Records. Organized by singer John “Southside Johnny” Lyon, guitarist and songwriter Steve Van Zandt (who decamped for the E Street Band in 1975 but continued to produce, manage, and write songs for the Jukes), and Richie “La Bamba” Rosenberg, the band is well known for its high-energy live shows and no-holds-barred songs. The Jukes' brand of raucous soul, roots-tinged rock, and bluesy reverie has flourished across the band's long career. Rolling Stone named Hearts of Stone one of the top 100 albums of the 1970s and '80s.

Speaking of the sleepy President, Joe Biden's recent of many public slip-ups was him literally falling asleep mid-answer in an interview -- something dreams are made of. Eric Adams has a crime summit without having any solutions to the obvious issues in-hand. The Yankees season is over, but not all is lost in New York sports, as there are two Cinderella stories being written in NY Football. An all-time Sid moment, when Sid gets a somewhat unexpected cameo on one of America's biggest morning shows. A Philadelphia Municipal Court approved a “stay-away” order to protect Lambert's family. A Baltimore family is now filing a federal lawsuit against Sesame Place—accusing the theme park of racial discrimination. The suit alleges a 5-year-old girl was ignored by Sesame Street characters during a meet and greet. Outgoing Pennsylvania Senator Pat Toomey has stated that he endorses Dr. Mehmet Oz to fill his seat in the Senate—though, when asked about the state's gubernatorial race, he would not endorse gubernatorial candidate Doug Mastriano. Steve Van Zandt, member of Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band and star of The Sopranos, made a video on behalf of John Fetterman and his campaign for the U.S. Senate. In the video, Van Zandt accuses Dr. Oz of being a New Jersey resident. Clarice Schillinger—former candidate for Pennsylvania Lieutenant Governor & Executive Director of Back to School U.S.A.—joins the show to discuss her recent speech at a rally for U.S. Senate candidate Dr. Mehmet Oz. Whether you call him Miami Steve, Little Steven, Steve or Stevie, the Rock and Roll Consigliere joins me via Zoom for an all-encompassing conversation about his new book, "Unrequited Infatuation," and the many stories he tells in it, and then some. We taped this conversation on Wednesday. I figured it would be a perfect way to kick off the weekend after a rough and frankly pretty awful week. And then Putin bombed a nuclear power plant in Ukraine last night - the largest one in all of Europe- and I realized I couldn't wait until Monday to talk about that. So, we're starting a bit early today. I still want Steve to usher in my weekend -- I was feeling too good at the end of the interview to then start talking about the horrors being inflicted on the good people of Ukraine. So, we get a bonus hour at the beginning. That first hour is podcast separately.. so download it too to hear Harvey Wasserman, who's been one of the fixtures of the No Nukes movement since the 70s. In fact, he was one of the people responsible for bringing together MUSE (Musicians United for Safe Energy) and the brilliant No Nukes concerts in 1979, at which Bruce and Steve Van Zandt played. So it just seemed that this was the way to go... Anyway, a bonus hour today, and Steve Van Zandt. Now if only the people of Ukraine weren't under attack by the planet's sickest madman...

In the new episode of the Rock's Backpages podcast, we welcome into RBP's cosy virtual cupboard the BBC's former Head of Music Entertainment — and the co-creator of the enduring Later… with Jools Holland show. Yes folks, Mark Cooper revisits his career as a music writer — from seeing the last Sex Pistols show in San Francisco in 1978 to interviewing N.W.A. in South-Cental L.A. 1989 — and talks about his long TV career and the hatching of Later in 1992.Mark's 2008 interview with Neil Young sparks a discussion of the Canadian giant's so-called "doom" years from 1972 to 1976, boxed up this month in the second volume of his monumental Archives project. With special attention to 1975's dark masterwork Tonight's the Night, we hear clips of Neil speaking in 1985 and 2005, then discuss Don't Be Denied, the documentary Mark made about him with director Ben Whalley. There's yet more audio in the episode as we celebrate the 70th birthday of Steve Van Zandt (or, if you prefer, Miami Steve, Little Steven… or indeed Silvio Dante) with clips from a 1982 interview. The E Street Band legend and subsequent Sopranos star talks to John Tobler about the bands he and his buddy Bruce Springsteen led in mid-'60s New Jersey, after which Mark and his co-hosts compare views on SVZ's side band the Disciples of Soul. Finally, Mark (Pringle, that is) talks us through his highlights among the week's 50+ new library articles, including great pieces on the Four Tops, David Bowie, Hound Dog Taylor, Dan ('Instant Replay') Hartman and Sheryl Crow … after which Barney quotes from interviews with Prince and Ani DiFranco, talking about Woody Guthrie and Donald Trump's odious dad Fred. That just leaves Jasper to wrap things up with closing remarks on Simon Cowell's ill-fated Girl Thing and former X-Factor contestant Cher Lloyd. Many thanks to special guest Mark Cooper.Rock's Backpages is proud to be part of the Pantheon podcast network.Pieces discussed: Neil Young, Sex Pistols, NWA, Neil Young, Neil Younger, Neil Youngest, Crazy Horse, Steve Van Zandt audio, Four Tops, David Bowie, Hound Dog Taylor, Dan Hartman, Culture Club, Mantronix, Sheryl Crow, Prince, Ani DiFranco, Girl Thing and Cher Lloyd.
