A group of aspiring young students recently returned from an enriching Technical Summer School in China, where they gained experience in and knowledge of the latest technological advancements, global innovation, and cultural exchange. The summer school project, in collaboration with Chinese universities, was organised by the School of Computer Science in TU Dublin in association with Huawei Ireland. Each of the four female students who participated received a €1,000 scholarship from Huawei to support their study in China and further studies in STEM subjects. The aim of the project is to provide the students with a cross-cultural and interdisciplinary experience. Visiting the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC) and the Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT) the programme included both STEM study (Robots, AI and Future Technology at UESTC and Materials for Renewable Energy at BIT), and Chinese language and culture courses. The students were also had the chance for cultural visits in Beijing and Chengdu. Speaking about the programme, Baolin Liang, PR Manager, Huawei Ireland, said: "We believe that exposing students to global perspectives in technology is key to shaping the innovators of tomorrow. This experience not only enhances technical skills but also encourages students to think beyond borders and collaborate on a global scale. I spoke to the students and they all found that this programme was very beneficial and particularly enjoyed learning about China and its culture." One of the students who travelled to Beijing, Gráinne Bannister, added: "As a third-year undergraduate student, I was extremely happy to learn about career opportunities and particularly the career experience of a female expert in Huawei. I feel that I really benefited from the visit to the Beijing Institute of Technology and now believe there is a strong future for female students who have concentrated on STEM subjects." Last week, the students visited Huawei's office in Dublin where they attended information sessions to learn about recent developments and trends in technology, and they also received some career development advice from the experts.

In today's News: Supreme Court nominee praised by religious liberty group This past weekend, President Donald Trump nominated Judge Amy Coney Barrett of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit to the United States Supreme Court to replace the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg. The following statement in response to the appointment may be attributed to Kelly Shackelford, president, CEO and chief counsel for First Liberty Institute, who was in attendance at the announcement: “President Trump has nominated a judge to the Supreme Court who we are confident will protect the religious freedoms and constitutional rights of all Americans. Judge Barrett’s record demonstrates her commitment to the Constitution’s text and its purpose. Judge Barrett understands that government exists to protect the God-given rights of the people and the Constitution exists to prevent government from infringing on those rights. She will make an excellent Supreme Court justice, and we expect the Senate to confirm her without delay.” Pro-life speaker assaulted Students for Life Action team member who is part of Students for Life’s “SCOTUS squad” was punched while peacefully advocating for the confirmation of Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court. Police were called and an arrest was made after a woman approached SFLAction Communications and Market Manager 23-year-old Autumn Schimmer, who was speaking on behalf of Judge Barrett. Schimmer spoke with police and reported that additional threatening behavior took place in the context of a crowd that included about 5 percent pro-life advocates and 95 percent abortion supporters. The woman who punched her fled into the crowd. DA refuses to enforce a pro-life law The district attorney of Nashville, Tenn., refused to enforce a new state law this week that informs women that a drug-induced abortion may be reversed to save their baby’s life. WLTV News 8 reports Davidson County District Attorney Glenn Funk said the law is unconstitutional, and he will not enforce it. Scheduled to go into effect Oct. 1, the pro-life legislation requires abortion facilities to display signs informing women that a chemical abortion may be reversed after the first dose of the two-drug abortion procedure. It also requires the abortionist to provide the same information during counseling 48 hours prior to the abortion. Chinese Communists change the Bible A Communist textbook that's being used in Chinese schools falsifies the Biblical account found in John 8:3–11. The textbook claims that Jesus murdered the woman who was found in adultery and said He, too, is a sinner. The textbook, published by the government-run University of Electronic Science and Technology Press, states: “The crowd wanted to stone the woman to death as per their law. But Jesus said, ‘let the one who has never sinned throw the first stone.’ hearing this, they slipped away one by one. When the crowd disappeared, Jesus stoned the sinner to death, saying, ‘I too am a sinner. But if the law could only be executed by men without blemish, the law would be dead.’”

Today's episode will be about deep learning and compression of data, and in particular compressing images. We all know how important compressing data is, reducing the size of digital objects without affecting the quality. As a very general rule, the more one compresses an image the lower the quality, due to a number of factors like bitrate, quantization error, etcetera. I am glad to be here with Tong Chen, researcher at the School of electronic Science and Engineering of Nanjing University, China. Tong developed a deep learning based compression algorithm for images, that seems to improve over state of the art approaches like BPG, JPEG2000 and JPEG. Kai Jia, a lecturer at the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China and visiting scholar at UC Davis, talks about two models of the sharing economy: one requires the platform to own little capital, like Airbnb and Uber (or Didi Chuxing, largest ride-sharing platform in China). The other model is capital intensive. The bike-sharing startups that have proliferated across China in recent years are an example of this. In this second model, the suppliers are not the consumers, Jia says, but rather, the suppliers are the companies. Because bike-sharing grew so quickly in China, the industry has very little regulation, and there are so many bikes that they have become a source of waste and overproduction rather than a means for creating more sustainable cities. On the positive side, bike-sharing apps are often far more convenient than alternative forms of transportation, and don’t contribute to the pollution of China’s cities. Jia argues for increased regulation of the sharing economy on the part of the government, and points out that Chengdu has recently issued guidelines around sharing university parking lots. The government can choose to either impose regulations on the platform itself, or on the behavior of the users, says Jia.

Ltd. YANG Qing Team Leader of Unicorn Team, Qihoo 360 Technology Co. Ltd. With the advent of the Internet of Things, more and more objects are connected via various communication protocols like Bluetooth,Z-wave,WiFi , ZigBee etc. Among those protocols ZigBee accounts for the largest market share,it has been adapted to various applications like WSN(Wireless Sensor Network),Smart Home . Over the last few years, large amount of research has been conducted on the security of ZigBee. In this presentation we will introduce a new technique to beat the security of ZigBee, we found the “signature” of the location of the security key . We will go through a specific example and share the thinking process along the way. The techniques used throughout this example can be generalized and used by other hardware reverse engineers. LI Jun is currently a hardware security intern in Unicorn Team of Qihoo 360 ,China. He is also a second year graduate student at Chengdu University of Information Technology. He received his bachelor’s degree from University of Electronic Science and Technology of China in 2013.During his college life, he switched between different majors, 2 years in Automobile Electronics,2 years in Electronic and Electric Engineering. Running Time : 5minutes Overview: The practical use of hydrogen energy is now a reality with fuel cell vehicles that run on electricity generated by the chemical reaction of hydrogen and oxygen coming onto the market. To achieve a fully-functioning hydrogen society, however, technological innovation in the production, transportation and storage of hydrogen is required. For example, though hydrogen emits only water when used, it is still involved with the emission of CO2 during its manufacture, depending on the material used. In addition, poor efficiencies during transportation and storage are also issues. Here we willl introduce two examples of leading-edge research aimed at resolving these issues.
