Willoughby Britton Ph.D. is a clinical psychologist, an Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Human Behavior at Brown University Medical School, and the Director of Brown's Clinical and Affective Neuroscience Laboratory. Her clinical neuroscience research investigates the effects of contemplative practices on the brain and body in the treatment of mood disorders, trauma, and other emotional disturbances. She is especially interested in practice-specific effects, individual differences, and moderators of treatment outcomes. She is probably best known for her research on adverse effects, and creating best practices around harms monitoring and reporting. As a clinician, she has been trained as an instructor in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), and the Somatic Experiencing (SE) approach to trauma. She now specializes in helping meditators who are experiencing meditation-related difficulties and providing meditation safety training to providers and organizations. Throughout this first half of their two-part conversation, Rachel and Willoughby find common ground discussing where their specialties intersect and help each other fill in the gaps of knowledge in their respective fields. Dr. Britton shares about her personal relationship with meditation, how it relates to her work, and the surprising results of her comprehensive study on the adverse effects of meditation. Rachel helps Dr. Britton unpack the cult dynamics and the societal structure that may explain the panic and very unscientific response of the meditation and science communities as a result of Dr. Britton's studies. #037.  Minimalist Joshua Becker defines minimalism as “The intentional promotion of the things that bring you joy and the removal of those that do not.”  It seems simple enough, doesn't it?  Determine which possessions, people and activities are important to you and let go of what doesn't add value.  So, what trips us up?It's estimated that the average American home has tripled in size over the past 50 years and contains 300,000 items.  And the Environmental Protection Agency has reported that Americans throw away more than 25 billion pounds of reusable textiles each year – that's 70 pounds per American adult. We don't have to be minimalists to learn from minimalism.  I believe we're all longing for a bit of space and simplicity.  Today we'll explore what makes us mindlessly consume and how we can increase our awareness to be more mindful of how we spend our time and money and move toward a simple lifestyle of essential elements.Links:George Carlin – StuffJoshua Becker – 21 Surprising Stats that Reveal How Much We Really OwnEPA – Don't Trash Your Old ClothesThe MinimalistsColin WrightLeo BabautaCourtney CarverErin BoyleIf you'd like to join our circle and never miss a weekly episode, please hit subscribe.  While listening on your app, you can rate the podcast by highlighting the stars that match your experience.  Much appreciated! For episode materials, show notes or to submit a question for a future episode, visit:https://athenawellness.com/podcast.

It's a gorgeously photographed and written book and its focus is on the joys of living with simple pleasures in a small Brooklyn apartment that Erin shares with her husband and young child. We cover all kinds of aesthetics on the podcast and have celebrated both maximalist and minimalist styles, and everything in between. Today, we think you'll be delighted to hear about Erin's very pared down, minimalist style that comes from a place of true happiness. We love that, for her, simple living is not about deprivation but about the beauty she sees in everyday ordinary things.

#009 — Having children invites chaos into your life. So if your work focuses on minimalism and simplicity, how do you align those themes with the bedlam of being a parent? For Erin Boyle, she says she seeks out the simple moments: The time spent reading stories to your kiddos at bedtime. The moments when your child is calmly eating cantaloupe. The five minutes in the morning you spend sitting on the kitchen floor with your three-year-old, drinking a smoothie. The entire day isn't simple, but parts of it can have calm and peace.   Erin Boyle is the writer of and editor of the lifestyle blog, Reading My Tea Leaves. Based in Brooklyn, Erin spent time living in a 173-square-foot apartment which inspired her path towards a more minimal, and beautiful, lifestyle. She believes that the elements of living simply are beneficial and accessible to us all, no matter the circumstances.   Now that she is the mother of two children under the age of four, with a six-month old in the house, simple moments are even more precious to Erin. Today she shares how her background in history and public humanities led her to explore the idea of ‘living small.’ I ask Erin about her gentle approach to self-improvement and how she defines courage within the context of being a parent. Listen in to learn how getting comfortable with uncertainty a big part of parenting, why she cautions against speaking about pregnancy in universal terms, and how you can embrace the ‘idyllic and beautiful’ moments in your life.  FULL SHOW NOTES:  Get the complete show notes with episode quotes, photos, and time stamps at www.startuppregnant.com/009.  EPISODE SPONSOR & SPECIAL OFFER:    Thank you to the sponsor of this episode: HippoGive! HippoGive is a new app that donates your change by rounding up your everyday transactions to the nearest dollar and gives it to the charities and non-profits of your choosing.  If you’ve been wanting to donate to Planned Parenthood, the ACLU, or disaster relief you can use this app and it’s a piece of cake. All you need to do is create an account, choose your charity and then set a weekly donation cap. Our guest today is Erin Boyle, the blogger behind Reading My Tea Leaves and author of "Simple Matters".
