There a variety of long-term services and supports, as well as natural supports to cope with their emotional, social and other needs. Thus, they require a coordinated and integrated approach in order to improve the outcomes. A holistic approach to healing can maximize a person's quality of life as a main outcome. Valeria interviews Amber McKinney-Morgan practices clinical social work in California with experience in individual and couples therapy.  Amber is certified in both Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and Gottman Couples Therapy. In addition, Amber is an EMDRIA-approved Consultant-in-Training (CIT) providing consultation to other EMDR clinicians looking to be certified. Peter trained with Ann Weiser Cornell in "Inner Relationship Focusing" and Peter Afford in the UK. Peter also has a background practising and teaching awareness and meditation skills to groups and individuals in a Buddhist context. Season 2, Episode 28, Release Date: 4-12-2024 IFS and EMDR with guest John Clarke   Today I have the pleasure of speaking with John Clarke. John is a fellow podcaster, and has created the show, "Going Inside, Healing Trauma from the Inside Out." He is a trauma therapist who uses evidenced based models of Internal Family Systems (IFS), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and Somatic Experiencing (SE). You can find out more about John on his website: www.johnclarketherapy.com   John was introduced to EMDR first, and then when he learned IFS, he saw this as a big game changer. EMDR gave him a deeper perspective of memories, and then, IFS helped give him a deeper understanding of parts of our system that holds these memories. There is also an understanding of the parts that feel that they have to protect (and sometimes exile) these more vulnerable parts.   John has a podcast and show named, "Going Inside." This is his second show that he has created, and with this show he is hoping to reach out to anyone who has an interest in therapy and wants to understand more about some of the amazing trauma models that are out there.    We spoke about how IFS is seen as a psycho-spiritual model, particularly with its understanding around Self-energy. John shared how when he spoke with Seth Kopald, they discussed how children have so much Self-energy, and John can see this in his daughter.   As we get older, we start developing shame. John shared that helping people recognize and deal with their shame is such a big part of the work that we do. A lot of our work is around sitting with people when they come to therapy, and taking the time to help them understand their parts, and befriending their parts. It this way, we can also help others unpack some of the profound fears that they are carrying, that they are not good enough, and that if other people really saw them, they might end up alone.    John shared how hard it could be for people who have been traumatized to be able to accept the moment, and trust that things will work out-- because this hasn't happened in their past. This can trigger the difficult emotions in their body.    What are the purposes of emotions? What does pathology exist? John shared how he feels that IFS model is so beautiful because it encourages us to turn to the parts that have these intense emotions, and understand and listen to the wisdom that these parts are trying to give to us.   Thank you John for our lovely conversation. SAND co-founders Zaya and Maurizio Benazzo join Euphrasia “Efu” Nyaki for a community conversation on holistic healing from trauma. Efu has developed a method that integrates ancestral wisdom from her Snail Clan in Tanzania, somatic therapy, and family constellations. Her approach helps resolve PTSD, depression, addiction, chronic illness, and more by releasing trauma at the physical, emotional, and spiritual levels. Euphrasia (Efu) Nyaki was born and raised on the slopes of mountain Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, where she gained the essence and vital healing energy from her ancestors. The strength of her ancestors lead her to earn a Bachelor of Science degree, train as a science teacher, and later to train as a healer using holistic methods. Efu enjoys helping others and for this reason joined an International Catholic Missionary community called Maryknoll sisters of Saint Dominick. Having arrived in Brazil as a missionary in 1993, Efu worked for 5 years with women who suffered from violence using mental health programs in the periphery of the city of João Pessoa, Brazil. In the year 2000 she co- founded two NGOs, and in the past 20 years, Efu has offered bodyworker and herbal medicine trainings for community leaders. For the past 10 years Efu has been teaching Family Constellation (trans-generational trauma healing) and Somatic Experiencing® (SE™) for trauma resolution in Brazil and other parts of the world. Brad Kammer, LMFT, LPCC, is a California Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist and Professional Clinical Counselor. Brad trained as a Somatic Psychotherapist and has worked in the field of trauma for over 20 years, specializing in working with Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (C-PTSD). Brad began his career as a Humanitarian Aid Worker in Asia which introduced him to personal and collective trauma. He became passionate about supporting individuals and communities in the transformation of trauma. Brad has since focused his work on the integration of Somatic Psychology, Interpersonal Neurobiology, Relational Therapies and wisdom from Spiritual Traditions and Traditional Cultures. He has a special interest in the fields of developmental, cultural and intergenerational trauma. Brad is passionate about bringing trauma-informed work to individuals and communities outside the clinical setting. For nearly 20 years, Brad has taught as a college professor at both undergraduate and graduate levels. He has been involved in community education, outreach and consulting to numerous communities and organizations. Brad has also been a trainer for Somatic Experiencing® (SE®). Today on the Soul of Life I speak to Dr. Lesley Tate-Gould, a psychotherapist that uses Somatic Experiencing to help people overcome trauma.   Lesley runs the Lido Wellness Center, an outpatient trauma and counseling practice in Newport Beach, California.   We talk about her specialization in a form of body-focused trauma treatment called Somatic Experiencing, or SE, and her experience of benefitting from SE herself. SE was developed by Peter Levine, and like IFS therapy, deviates from the norms of traditional talk therapy and its typical cognitive and rational focus.   "Sometimes emotions are like people would rather stay away from them." Instead, SE focuses on so-called “bottom-up” neurological processing. Her clinical neuroscience research investigates the effects of contemplative practices on the brain and body in the treatment of mood disorders, trauma, and other emotional disturbances. She is especially interested in practice-specific effects, individual differences, and moderators of treatment outcomes. She is probably best known for her research on adverse effects, and for creating best practices around harms monitoring and reporting. As a clinician, she has been trained as an instructor in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), and the Somatic Experiencing (SE) approach to trauma. She now specializes in helping meditators who are experiencing meditation-related difficulties and providing meditation safety training to providers and organizations. In this second half of their two-part conversation, Dr. Britton provides more details about the resistance she came up against in the science and meditation communities after publishing data that contradicted their narratives of meditation as an infallibly positive pursuit. Cynthia was fortunate to work and teach closely with Bob Hoffman for many years. Cynthia has an eclectic, embodied, soulful approach to healing and change. She has over thirty years of international experience facilitating psycho-educational, transformational groups. This week we have Licensed therapist Randi Gray LCP, NCC on the podcast to discuss how Somatic Experiencing and EMDR can bring your recovery to the next level. Randi explains that people generally use talk therapy to learn healthy coping skills where with EMDR and somatic experiencing you are doing deeper level of work, helping you access parts of your brain that stores trauma. Levine developed this approach after observing that prey animals, whose lives are routinely threatened in the wild, are able to recover readily by physically releasing the energy they accumulate during stressful events. My guest today is Jen Olson and what you'll hear is another story of another brave person whose personal struggle led to a first psychedelic experience, in her case with 5 MeO DMT. It ultimately changed the way she looked at herself in relation to the world and the work with these substances afterwards. As always you'll get a brief introduction into Jen's upbringing and what led to her becoming the 7th Canadian female mountain guide, living a life filled with adventures and traveling to places like Alaska, Pakistan and Nepal. Because of her work she was no stranger to dealing with the loss of loved ones, however, the sudden accidental death of her father in 2006 plunged her into a hole of previously unknown depths. You'll hear her explain how this led her to find Somatic Experiencing (SE) as the most powerful way to work with her past and change her current state. Since SE offers both a top-down (cognitive) as well as bottom up (nervous system) approach to resolving traumas she was really interested when she heard that psychedelics are currently also used in treating and transforming mental health. In 2020 she had her first 5-MeO-DMT experience and you'll hear how she experienced a complete dissolution of her own Self and how this helped her to process her grief. When Jen is looking into her own future she sees her dream become a reality to bring both somatic and psychedelic-assisted therapy into one system. In this episode we sit down with....Jamie Edwards. Jamie is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with over 17 years experience in the field. She has worked in violence against women and victims/survivors of crime organizations, child welfare, long-term care, hospice, and has been a psychotherapist for over 12 years. She is a body-oriented therapist that uses holistic approaches to promote healing and specializes in trauma/survival states, stress response, and grief/bereavement. Jamie received a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Criminal Justice from Marist College and a Masters in Social Work from Fordham University. She is a certified rape crisis counselor in the state of New York, completed the 40 hour Illinois Domestic Violence Training, and has over 40 hours of training and consultation in Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR), a therapy known for helping those suffering from trauma. Most recently, Jamie has completed over 200 hours of training and consultation in Somatic Experiencing (SE), a body-oriented psychotherapy based on the understanding of the body and mind's response to stress and threat. Jamie has a personal mindfulness and meditation practice, including attending silent meditation retreats in the vipassana/insight meditation practice. SE™ is a clinical methodology based upon an appreciation of why animals in the wild are not traumatized by routine threats to their lives, while humans, on the other hand, are readily overwhelmed and often subject to the traumatic symptoms of hyperarousal, shutdown and dysregulation. Dr Levine was a stress consultant for NASA on the development of the space shuttle project and was a member of the Institute of World Affairs Task Force of Psychologists for Social Responsibility in developing responses to large-scale disasters and ethnopolitical warfare. He is also a Senior Fellow at The Meadows Addiction and Trauma Treatment Center in Wickenburg, Arizona. Marla is a transformational spiritual medium who has been able to intuitively access heightened sensitivities within her own being allowing her to sense important information for one’s highest good. In some ways it could be described as reading the ‘information field’ that is the sum total of a person’s ‘wave form’ - or body. She is also able to access deceased loved ones in the same way. Remember this statement by the greatest scientist ever to set foot on earth? “The day science begins to study non-physical phenomena, it will make more progress in one decade than in all the previous centuries of its existence.”     Nikola Tesla Marla’s receptivity to the invisible is able to bring healing and insight to anyone seeking deeper understanding about relationships, health, career, family, and spirituality. So what do we call a person who has ‘certain’ abilities that mainstream science is reluctant to acknowledge? This is because, even today, our scientific apparatus is not yet refined and calibrated enough to measure the sensitivities of the invisible? However, this new science is now including new vernacular and terminology to describe the way we decode information - that’s predominantly experienced as emanating data streams. Now we are more able to decipher and comprehend the invisible - and far more adroitly. As I moved into adulthood, I determined that I couldn’t just “hold a job”, but that I needed to dedicate my life to doing what I can to relieve the suffering in our world. This lead me to studying and living amongst different cultures, religions and healing approaches, and eventually into psychology. My interest in the fields of Somatic Psychology and Interpersonal Neurobiology emerged from my belief that healing must be integrated with both mind and body, as well as in connection with our relationships. I live in the hills of Northern California with my family where I am a somatic psychotherapist in private practice, as well as a college professor, community educator, and consultant for several training organizations. Meeting the demands of daily life can be overwhelming. Developing healthy boundaries – physical and energetic - can help you reduce stress and feel more in control. In this podcast, Somatic Experiencing Practitioner (SEP) Brian D. Mahan explains why it’s hard for many people to set clear boundaries (because most of us didn’t learn how in childhood).   “We weren’t allowed to have those boundaries in our family situation and then we don’t know how to take that…. Into our social lives.” “The more we are able to identify what our energetic boundaries are, what our values are, then the more we are able to……  sit in the strength of our own sense of what’s right and wrong,” said Mahan. Mahan says identifying your core values is key a first step toward establishing healthy boundaries. “It’s important to get in touch with ‘what’s important to us, what’s not important, what we like and what we dislike.” When values are defined, he says, a person can make a decision and take action, or what he calls ‘healthy aggression.’ “we have this opinion that aggression is a bad thing, and the reason we have that is it’s usually shamed out of us as children” but, Mahan says ‘Healthy aggression is also discipline, dedication, drive, empowerment.” In this podcast, you will also learn how Somatic Experiencing (SE) can offer relief to those suffering from PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder), trauma and other disturbing life events. Mahan was introduced to SE at the suggestion of his chiropractor. He was suffering from daily panic attacks following a major car crash. He says, after three SE sessions, his panic attacks went away. The experience was so life-changing for him, he became an SE practitioner and now trains others in this methodology as well.
