One of the biggest exercises in democracy this year is filling 720 seats from 27 countries in the European Parliamentary elections. As results continue to flood in, a split-screen image is emerging. Establishment parties did well in many countries and EU Commission President Ursula Von Der Leyen's centrist European People's party will remain the largest group. But in France, Marine Le Pen and her far-right allies won twice as many seats as centrist President Emmanuel Macron's party. Italy's former Prime Minister Matteo Renzi, whose centre-left party failed to win any seats, joins the show from Rome, and journalist and author Christine Ockrent joins the show from Paris. Psychedelics are a buzzy new mental health treatment. Do they work, and are they safe? The New York Times' Ernesto Londoño reports.
As the newly named Brazil bureau chief for the New York Times, Ernesto Londoño had hit a journalistic zenith. Yet, he had never been more depressed. Contemplating suicide and eager for a way out of his sadness, Londoño signed up for an Amazonian ayahuasca retreat. He was initially skeptical of the drug's ability to alter his mental health trajectory, but ultimately that experience ended up changing Londoño's life. That story centers his new book, “Trippy,” which also looks at the promise and peril of medicinal psychedelics. Guests: Ernesto Londoño, author, "Trippy: The Peril and Promise of Medicinal Psychedelics"; national correspondent, the New York Times; Londoño has reported from Iraq and Afghanistan
Ernesto Londoño, a veteran journalist with the New York Times, was suicidally depressed, living in Brazil, and curious. He had heard from a psychiatrist at a party about the remarkable and barely studied benefits of ayahuasca, a psychedelic herbal brew that has been popular among tribes in South America for a long time. Being a reporter, he wanted to learn more. Being an incredibly depressed person, he wanted to try it. His experience led to a dramatic change in his mental health and an interest in studying psychedelic treatments in many locations and an interest in studying the organizations and individuals who administer them. He writes about all of it in his new book, Trippy:The Peril and Promise of Medicinal Psychedelics.Thank you to all our listeners who support the show as monthly members of Maximum Fun.Check out our I'm Glad You're Here and Depresh Mode merchandise at the brand new merch website MaxFunStore.com!Hey, remember, you're part of Depresh Mode and we want to hear what you want to hear about. When New York Times correspondent Ernesto Londoño was struggling with depression, he found relief from a surprising source: ayahuasca. Psychedelics are on the rise as a way to treat mental health conditions, but like any drug, they come with side effects and potential problems. We discuss Ernesto's new book, Trippy: The Peril and Promise of Medicinal Psychedelics, and take calls about your experience with psychedelics.
Bad trips, anti-drug PSAs, and the crackdown under the Controlled Substances Act of 1970 helped stigmatize psychedelics in the U.S. But now, there's renewed clinical inquiry into whether these drugs can ease emotional trauma. To understand the future of psychedelics, Audie calls up Ernesto Londoño, reporter at the New York Times and author of the new book, “Trippy: The Peril and Promise of Medicinal Psychedelics.” They discuss his own mental health and psychedelic journeys and why he thinks there's good reason for both hope and skepticism. To be “California sober” means you don't have to follow complete abstinence to consider yourself on the wagon. Ernesto Londoño is a New York Times reporter covering drug use and counternarcotics policy. He joins host Krys Boyd to discuss the changing views of sobriety, why some in the medical community feel like total abstinence is unrealistic, and how this is changing addiction treatment. His article is “What Does Being Sober Mean Today? For Many, Not Full Abstinence.”

É a missão do jornalismo e eu me sinto sempre muito empenhado nessa missão.

The crew looks at the crisis in Venezuela and considers the American and world responses to it. Is it any of Washington’s business what goes on there, and will any result have democratic legitimacy? Will more sanctions help to quickly resolve the situation in a way that benefits the people there, or will they increase the suffering? Brazil's newly sworn-in president, Jair Bolsonaro, was a political outsider who swept to power on promises to crack down on corruption and violence. But even before taking office this week, he had been already directed the beginnings of radical change in the country; it looks to include an increase in guns, closer ties to the United States, more deforestation of the Amazon, and a more conservative approach to gender and sexuality - especially in schools. Ernesto Londoño is the New York Times' Brazil bureau chief , based in Rio de Janeiro.
