Today my guest is NYT best selling author Jonathon Evison. His latest release, Small World, is a sweeping epic of the American experience. (Yes, have read it, and yes, it is really good. No, I didn't come up with the term “sweeping epic – that was someone much smarter than me.)  He also wrote the book “The Fundamentals of Caregiving” which became a movie currently available on Netflix. It is based on his time as a caregiver for a young man with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and stars Paul Rudd. It is funny, hopeful and honest. He also currently has the number 2 book on the banned book request list in “Lawn Boy.” This was his first work that I read and loved it. Let's see what we can do to move it to number one! The idea that we are still trying to ban books in 2022 makes me sad.  Folks, I want to apologize to you and Jonathon. People do so many of these press junkets and interviews, they have to get tired of doing these things. Here at Tony on the Mic, I want to tell the story, but more, just give people a chance to tell their story while being themselves. Talk about things they like and appreciate. This episode reminded me of that mission as we talked books, inspiration, process, etc for the first half, but he became energized towards the end when we started talking sports, music and kids! Lord knows I would rather talk kids and sports etc, so from now on there will be more of that! It also could have been partly to recording at 7:30 AM or some crazy early time. We make a future bet about how the Seattle Seahawks will do this year, I recorded it to have a record of it, if I lose, I have a feeling the evidence will be destroyed.

My guest today is Jonathon Evison, New York Times best selling author. Adult content, lots of candor and I stopped beeping about 1/3 of the way through… Jonathon wrote All about Lulu and Lawn Boy, both of which I read and recommend, and he just released Legends of the North Cascades, which I have bought, but not read yet, its on the list! He has another half dozen books and his latest, small world, is due out next year. We talk about his process and inspirations, generational parenting and do a deep dive into Seattle Music and some Seattle sports. He sings his rejected original jingle for the Seattle chamber of commerce. He once kicked someone out of his band, who later help form, and is still a member of Pearl Jam… I guess it worked out for both of them. A little "adult" language, and less than perfect sound due to the zoom - but a fun, nonstop ride!

In this episode, the third in a series of 'plant special' podcasts, Mike chats to Clematis King, Raymond Evison, owner and founder of Raymond Evison Clematis. Raymond has spent six decades searching for, breeding and developing the world's best clematis. Born in 1944, Raymond started his horticultural career at the age of 15 in Shropshire and quickly became the director of his first company 'Treasures of Tenbury Ltd'. A brutal winter killed a third of his mother stock and he moved the clematis operations to Guernsey, in the sunny Channel Islands, near France, where he set up the 'Guernsey Clematis Nursery' in 1985, to take advantage of the milder climate and longer growing season. In this Clematis Special episode, Mike chats to Raymond who shares some invaluable hints, tips and advice about growing clematis. You'll learn what to look out for when you're buying clematis, how to plant them and everything you need to know about how to care for them. Raymond also provides some easy to follow instructions on how to prune clematis, a subject which some of us worry about needlessly. For the more adventurous maybe, some invaluable hints and tips on how to propagate clematis. And, amongst much more, you'll learn where the name for the popular Clematis 'Freckles' comes from. Raymond Evison, the pre-eminent clematis breeder and grower in the world, more than graciously agreed to chat with us about his passion, the wonderful clematis genus.  We cover SO much in this interview from his amazing horticultural background in England, his plant explorations in China, the clematis breeding process how to grow and prune them as well as all kinds of species and varieties that are suitable for those of us in more northerly zones.   Raymond was so generous in sharing his knowledge and such gracious guest, we are sure you will love this interview as much as we did, we can hardly wait to have him back!   His website also has great tips for growing and pruning Raymond's Webpage - Growing Guides Raymond provided us this list of clematis varieties to try for our Zones (Hardy to Zone 4- but I know I will be testing some of these here in my Zone 2a - in known microclimates), we can hardly wait for more of his new releases! The viticella hybrids,  Abundance Alba Luxurians Etiole    Violette  Kermesina Royal Velours  Polish Spirit There are others ,but these are the most popular ones . C. integrifolia  C. X eriostemon  C. jackmanii  C. jackmanii Superba  C. henryii  C. Marie Boisselot Raymond also suggested that we try the following as they are new ones rated to Zone 4, but may be hardier, he can't guarantee they will be but I know I am going to give them a try!  And we hope the Devon ( U of A) Botanic Garden does too! Bernadine Sally  Samaritan Jo Chevalier Sacha  Zara  Tranquilite Corinne Parisienne Nubia  Olympia Vicki Corinne  Pettit Faucon (also good as a cut) Sally  And lastly the alpina species C. alpina and C. macropetala ( the species ) and their cultivars.  (just an aside- Clara has been growing an alpina in Zone 2a for 5 years!, even through -40 spells) The varieties Raymond recommends as particularly good as cuts are:  Marie Boisselot  ( Mme Le Coulter ) Prinz Hendrik * W E Gladstone  X Durrandii *  Beauty of Richmond And possibly Lord Neville and Lady Caroline Neville  You should also try C .integrifolia and it's  pink and white forms, and C. tubilosa, these have strong thick stems and work well . Both the * ones were used for many years in the Dutch Flower Markets in Holland,it is likely the only one available now would be X Durrandii. Of the others, only Marie Boisselot is probably available Raymond has won 30 Chelsea Gold Medals at the Chelsea Flower Show in England.  Check out a short video of one of his dsiplays here: Raymond Evison at Chelsea Flower Show .    He provided the following advice for his cutting and conditioning steps for his cut flower arrangements at the show (note he also has alot of potted clematis at the Chelsea show as well): "What I (Raymond)  did with these varieties when we used them as cut flowers for the Chelsea Flower Show Exhibits was as follows: Cut the stems about 45-50cm long in the early morning and then removed all the leaves and put the stems into a bucket of cold water for  24 hrs to condition them . But before putting the stems in water I would dip the base of each stem in boiling hot water for 25 seconds . note: It is always best to cut the flowers just after the flower bud had opened and not when the flower was fully open " And since we know you are heading out to find more clematis to add to your collections, the suppliers of Raymond Evison Clematis in Canada are: BTN Valleybrook Gardens, Ontario Brookdale Treeland (or BTN), Ontario Sheridan Nurseries, Ontario.  We can't thank Raymond enough for so generously sharing all of his knowledge and enthusiasm, we look forward to talking to him again in the future to hear about more of his plant hunting and clematis breeding adventures.   Our theme music was composed and performed by Heather's son Callum and audio editing was completed by the uber talented Laura Eccleston.

In anticipation of Celluloid Bainbridge's upcoming 20th anniversary retrospective (November 17-18), festival founder Kathleen Thorne and Lynwood Theatre maven TJ Faddis  talk with BCB host John Fossett about the history, technical challenges, and highlights of this iconic film festival. Over the last 20 years of the festival there have been numerous surprises. Jonathan Evison is the guest. His new novel, This is Your Life, Harriet Chance!, is now available from Algonquin Books. It was the official August pick of The Nervous Breakdown Book Club. A little late getting to this one, considering that Harriet was the August pick for the book club, but as most of you know, my new policy is to only do in-person interviews, so I waited for Johnny to get down here on  tour, and then he came over and sat down and we talked. Always great to see Mr. Evison. Known him for a long time. We met on Myspace years ago. True story. And we've been buddies ever since. Johnny is one of those writers who can really do the work. He's prolific and yet the quality is so high. Every time I look up, I feel like he's got another novel coming out. (And here I should mention that his last one, Revised Fundamentals of Caregiving, has been adapted for the silver screen, starring Paul Rudd and Selena Gomez, and should be out in theaters before too long.  Stay tuned.)  And what else? I think you're gonna like this one.  I know I always say that, but with this one I really mean it.  I had a good time talking with Johnny Evison. We haven't seen each other in a while and this was our chance to catch up and there's just an essential goodness to him that always comes through, both in art and in life.
