Episode 45 - Review: Wolfman (2025)Remember back in 2017 when Universal tried launching their Monsters Universe of movies with “The Mummy” starring Tom Cruise? Even with the attempt to sneak in Russell Crowe as Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde, that movie became an epic mess. “Wolf Man” is a second bite at the apple for Universal, with Leigh Whannell (“Saw” writer and “Upgrade”, “The Invisible Man” director) directing and horror king Jason Blum (Blumhouse Productions) producing this film. What this film has going for it is its strong use of storytelling. The movie explores themes of parents, their kids, and the effort not to pass on mistakes from one generation to the next. It's a very cool concept that is executed well for both how the starts and ends too. The setting, the actors (an amazing main cast: Christopher Abbott, Julia Garner, and Mathilda Firth) all shine. Whannell also brings much of the production crew back together from his hit movie “The Invisible Man” for this movie. The sound design is incredible—easily the most creative aspect of the film. Can lightning strike twice for Universal's revamped Monsters Universe, with its smaller scale but bigger scares? Does “Wolf Man” deliver the chills and thrills you'd expect from a monster movie? I get into it all here, including surprises with this movie's budget and its interesting origins, which connect to director Derek Cianfrance and actor Ryan Gosling (both of whom previously teamed up on the excellent 2013 film “The Place Beyond the Pines”).“Wolf Man” is now playing in theaters. We have a great year of movies, shows, reviews, and recommendations ahead. Please be sure to leave a review—it helps the podcast!Have a great time at the movies, and thanks for listening. This is a public episode. Gaywyck was published by Avon in 1980. Set on the Long Island estate of the wealthy Gaylord family in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Gaywyck charts an inter-generational terror born of abuse, madness, and unrequited love. We follow the protagonist Robbie as he arrives at the estate as the librarian. Like most gothic romances of the era, Gaywyck is a book that takes a microscope to cruelty. Dylan takes a swing at writing psychological horror, modernizing Robert Louis Stevenson's "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde" and setting it in our Dark Universe. What has Russell Crowe's Jekyll been up to since "The Mummy?" What is the nature of evil? What in god's name is Indrid Cold wearing? It's our last chapter before the big crossover! In 1888, playwrights raced (literally) to stage the first theatrical production of Robert Louis Stevenson's instant classic horror novel. The results were… mixed. And today, Chris and Paris of the Terrible Book Club podcast have joined the Antiques Freaks and chosen to read for your pleasure the absolute worst version of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde. For our 2022 Halloween special, we bring you our radioplay of the 1888 play Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde by Daniel E. Bandmann with our very best podfriends, the Antiques Freaks! This episode was inspired by our Patron Miri who sent us a message in May of last year, saying, “If you want a non-postmodern play (A linear plot!) with a truly absurd backstory, I suggest Daniel Bandmann's adaptation of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, written in 1888. It was the losing (and worse) adaptation in an international actor race/lawsuit that led to the lead actor of the other adaptation being accused of being (or inspiring) Jack the Ripper…Both plays involved in the race/lawsuit are bad adaptations, but the Bandmann one is worse--bad writing as well as nonsensical plot and characterization changes, love interest insertion, etc.” Our thanks go out to Miri along with Martin A. Danahay and Alex Chisholm, for creating Jekyll and Hyde Dramatized, from which we sourced the script of this play and the rich history surrounding it. Content Warnings: In addition to our usual barnyard language, this episode includes depictions of murder, violence, misogyny, and various bad Victorian ideas and opinions.

The importance of the movie poster is almost lost in this day and age. With the internet flooding social media with trailers, photos, and all sorts of advertisements, the poster art might get lost in the shuffle. But decades ago, it was the first thing used to promote an upcoming feature film. It had to reach out and grab hold of your eyes, telling your brain you need to see this film. Shortly after that, the poster collecting started. Why do we collect posters? What kinds are there? What is it about it that still holds a spell over movie goers? Join us and our special guest, Alan Tromp, as we try to answer all of those questions and more, as we discuss our own obsessions with movie posters, from one-sheets to British Quads to the French Grande size! As terrible as being married to an abuser is, there's something worse. It's getting free from your abuser, then getting remarried to another one. For a lot of survivors, that's their worst fear. Can they trust themselves to identify red flags when they were taught to dismiss them for so long? Will they be able to see past the bullcrap if a potential suitor is slick and smooth but a turd of a guy underneath the facade? How can they be sure they're choosing a safe, truly good person, not a Dr. Jekyll / Mr. Hyde?I know that fear all too well. And I trust myself to choose good people now. (I did; I'm remarried to one.) I've also taught hundreds upon hundreds of women how to spot red flags in relationships. By the time you listen to this episode, you'll know whether your Christian dating relationship (or any dating relationship) is toxic. The seven deal-breakers: Cannot accept negative feedback Little or no empathy Has to have his own way Communicates passive-aggressively (plus 14 EXAMPLES/QUESTIONS to help you identify passive-aggressive behavior) Prioritizes his own interests (including not respecting your time, refusing to be honest or discuss his past, bad with money, a boundary-breaker, and other examples) Won't take responsibility for his behavior (plus 5 EXAMPLES/QUESTIONS to help you see whether this is true about him) He consumes you; the relationship is slowly destroying your self-worth, your friendships, your potential, and your interests (plus 3 QUESTIONS to ask yourself to know if this is true)  Read or download the transcript hereIf you are a Christian woman who thinks you may be in an emotionally destructive marriage, learn more at https://flyingfreenow.comI'll send you (free!) the first chapter of my book, Is It Me? Pages 258 to 277 The American dream of a land of freedom had turned into a nightmare of tyranny. It had become so corrupt that many states wanted to secede, while Utah was trying to join. For their devotion to the Constitution, the Saints in this area were rewarded with persecution and imprisonment. In a Dr. Jekyll/ Mr. Hyde performance, the lovely lamb of liberty had turned into a ravenous wolf. Instead of a military force to defend the Mormons, the U.S. Government sent an army out to destroy them. If ever the Lord wanted to cleanse a nation, it was this one–and it certainly needed it. The Lord pleaded with the Saints to let Him fight their battles. In 1880, He revealed to Wilford Woodruff: And what I the Lord say unto you, mine Apostles, I also say unto my servants the Seventies, the High Priests, the Elders, the Priests and all my servants who are pure in heart and who have borne testimony unto the nations. Let them go forth and cleanse their feet in pure water and bear testimony of it unto the Father who is in heaven. And then, saith the Lord unto mine Apostles and mine Elders, when ye do these things with purity of heart, I the Lord will hear your prayers and am bound by oath and covenant to defend you and fight your battles. (Journal of Wilford Woodruff, Jan. 25, 1880) And in 1889, about one year before issuing the Manifesto, President Woodruff was again told by the Lord: Place not yourselves in jeopardy to your enemies by promise. Your enemies seek your destruction and the destruction of my people. If the Saints will hearken unto my voice, and the counsel of my servants, the wicked shall not prevail. Let my servants who officiate as your counselors before the courts make their pleadings as they are moved upon by the Holy Spirit, without any further pledges from my Priesthood. (“1889 Revelation to Wilford Woodruff,” SLC, as recorded in Revelations 1880-1890, Pioneer Press, p. 64)
