We dived into the rise of the broligarch, our fears for Trump 2.0 and the promises he's already made on trans rights and climate action (i.e. to protect neither).Life is about the light and the dark, but the Molly-Mae doc didn't really offer as many laughs as we'd hoped! Today's episode is sponsored by BetterHelp.  Just in case you're thinking about joining that incredible business opportunity selling a life changing product…don't give them your credit card info until you've listened to this A Little Bit Culty remix. We've put together a special Anti-MLM 101 Starter Kit episode with some of our favorite crusaders in the war on schemes, scams, and other internet flim-flams especially for you. Our upline on this one is pretty solid. We dug into our archives and Roberta Blevins came out swinging, so a segment from our Season 2 episode with the LuLa Rich fan fave is at the top of the batting list. She chats with us about the dangers of moldy leggings, #bossbabe energy, pricey sea cruises, other MLM tomfoolery. After Roberta, we move on to a clip from our more recent episode with Emily Lynn Paulson, an author and mother who believes that all MLMs—which form a $180 billion industry—are cults. Spoiler alert: We violently agree. And last but not least, we go all the way back to our Season 1 chat with Douglas Brooks, an attorney and MLM-buster with insights on what it takes to seek justice for people who've been screwed over. Take heart: When prosperity gospel grifters write big checks that their sneaky asses can't cash, there can be legal consequences. NOTES: Roberta Blevins was a Trainer with LuLaRoe, had a team of 75 women under her, and made over $65,000 in bonuses alone. But when she came to the conclusion that it was a rigged, losing game she didn't just leave the business: she testified in the Washington State vs. LuLaRoe Pyramid Scheme lawsuit as a witness for the state. Since leaving MLM, the fan favorite from the LuLaRich series has educated herself on the systemic structure of the business model, the psychological manipulation, the seedy underbelly and governmental ties, the cult indoctrination, and the history of Multi Level Marketing. She educates daily on TikTok, and podcasts in her "free time" on her own podcast, Life After MLM, which explores the dangers of Multi Level Marketing through the eyes of the victims and survivors. Her work has been featured on Amazon Prime Video, Vice Media, Bloomberg News, Split, and Business Insider among others. Cracking Open podcast has so many incredible guests lined up for you this season! Today's guest is Emily Paulson – a writer, Certified Professional Recovery Coach, TEDx Speaker, and the Founder of Sober Mom Squad. She is passionate about ending the shame and stigma of mental health and substance use disorders, and her own recovery path is focused on ruthless honesty, grace, self-love, and the belief that sharing our truth with each other is the best resource of all.Emily opens up about her struggle with alcoholism and how it led her to get sucked into the culture of multilevel marketing. This path made her millions but soon felt dishonest and exploitative. Once she got sober, she was able to clearly see the problematic environment of multilevel marketing and the many victims that get caught up in it.She has since authored two books: Highlight Real: Finding Honesty and Recovery Beyond the Filtered Life, and her newly published book Hey, Hun: Sales, Sisterhood, Supremacy, and the Other Lies Behind Multilevel Marketing. Emily has given two powerful TEDx talks, challenging the status quo of parenting, alcohol use, and feminism as we know it. She has also been featured in major publications such as the Today Show, New York Times, Washington Post, The Seattle Times, Chicago Tribune, Next Question with Katie Couric, and the Tamron Hall Show.Today's episode is ultimately about choosing compassion over shame when you reflect on your past choices. Emily helps us understand that when we feel lonely, afraid, or have unresolved trauma, we often make decisions that we think will lead us to feel connection and "normalcy" but more often than not those decisions only lead us further away from ourselves and our truth. And when we are healed and whole, our decisions and truth become much more clear and help light the way to the life we were always meant to have. Emily's story is one of truth, sobriety, and how to get honest about the world and people around you, but most importantly with yourself.Love,MollyLearn more about Emily Paulson herePurchase Emily's books hereListen to Emily's Tedx Talks hereConnect with Emily on Facebook and Instagram Learn more about Molly Carroll hereConnect with Molly on Instagram and FacebookFeeling Stuck? It's Your Time To Get UNSTUCK3-Month Small Group Coaching ProgramStarting October 5, 2023Book a FREE discovery call with Molly today!

Primary activities involve drinking lots of wine, relishing in sisterhood and female empowerment, and best of all, making loads of money. It's enticing as hell, which explains why Multi Level Marketing groups (MLMs) remain ubiquitous today.  What could go wrong? A shit ton! Hence why our guest today, author and mother Emily Lynn Paulson, believes that all MLMs—which form a $180 billion industry—are cults. Oh, but they're not just your average cults, because lobbyists and politicians are fighting hard to keep the legal pyramid schemes not only intact, but growing throughout American suburbia (and beyond) like wildfire.  In this episode, we discuss how to not get caught up in the flames.  Paulson is also the author of Highlight Real: Finding Honesty and Recovery Beyond the Filtered Life as well as the forthcoming Hey, Hun: Sales, Sisterhood, Supremacy, and the Other Lies Behind Multilevel Marketing (May 2023). Emily Lynn Paulson is the author of the new book Hey, Hun: Sales, Sisterhood, Supremacy, and the Other Lies Behind Multilevel Marketing and Highlight Real: Finding Honesty & Recovery Beyond the Filtered Life. She is also a speaker, recovery coach, and the founder of Sober Mom Squad, and has given two powerful TEDx talks, both challenging the status quo of parenting, alcohol use, and feminism as we know it. Emily has also been featured in major publications such as the Today Show, New York Times, Washington Post, The Seattle Times, Chicago Tribune, Next Question with Katie Couric, and the Tamron Hall Show. Emily made well over a million dollars during her residency as a #bossbabe at one of the top MLMs. What's wrong with a little girl power? Turns out, a lot. She earned every bonus, gift, and international trip. But she also pushed away friends and family, burned bridges, and wasted precious time being distracted with ‘her business' instead of spending time with her children. She recruited hundreds of women into a dream that wasn't achievable or sustainable.   "As a stay-at-home parent, I was understandably attracted to a culture that offered a salve to my loneliness. But I learned that MLMs are actually a way for women to exploit other women. I saw the links between the pseudoscience, white supremacy, and, yes, racism that infiltrated MLM life. I'm speaking out to spark change."  -Emily Lynn Paulson Emily and I discuss: how Emily ended up in an MLM, why MLMs are often pyramid schemes, how the consultants are actually the customers, why terms like “bossbabe” and “ladyboss” are misleading, why MLMs are often described as “cultlike”, Emily's quick rise to the top of her organization and how her white privilege and pre-existing financial security made that possible, exclusion, religion and racism in MLMs, the role of “love bombing” and toxic positivity in MLMs, how MLM life encouraged her drinking and brought her to a rock bottom moment, how she exploited her cancer diagnosis for her business, the truth behind the “all-expense paid” trips and cars, the darker side of MLMs and why she decided to write this book  how it turned out differently than she'd expected. A few years ago, Emily Lynn Paulson didn't think she had a problem with drinking. She'd quit cold turkey for her pregnancies, after all. But there always seemed to be a reason to drink, an opportunity, an excuse. And, soon, a constant. And her kids noticed. So she made a decision, found a sponsor and a 12-step program, and quit. Now Emily is the founder of Sober Mom Squad, a Certified Professional Recovery Coach, a Facilitator of Addiction Awareness and the author of "Highlight Real: Finding Honesty and Recovery Beyond the Filtered Life." But there was something else she needed to be honest about: her complicit relationship with a predatory multi-level marketing outfit (MLM). Drinking had helped make Emily a sales juggernaut, but she didn't like what she'd bought into. So for the second time inside a few decisive years, she intentionally pivoted away from something central to her life. In this episode of "Your New Life Blend," host Shoshanna Hecht talks to Emily about her upcoming book, "Hey, Hun: Sales, Sisterhood, Supremacy, and the Other Lies Behind Multilevel Marketing," and her path away from the slippery-slope culture of casual drinking and MLM payday, and towards making amends, and changes.Emily's website: https://www.emilylynnpaulson.com/ instagram.com/emilylynnpaulsonlinkedin.com/emilylynnpaulsontwitter.com/emilypaulson facebook.com/emilylynnpaulsonSober Mom Squad: https://www.sobermomsquad.com/instagram.com/sobermomsquad"Highlight Reel: Finding Honesty & Recovery Beyond The Filtered Life, and Addiction"https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/highlight-real-emily-lynn-paulson/1133930990"Hey Hun: Sales, Sisterhood, Supremacy, and Other Lies Behind Multilevel Marketing"https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/Hey-Hun/Emily-Lynn-Paulson/9781955905251

This week on Talk Recovery Radio, Emily, Kiola and Lainy join the show to talk about Sober Mom Squad. The Sober Mom Squad is just as it sounds: a Squad of Moms who are already sober, those who are just dipping their toes in exploring an alcohol free lifestyle, and everything in between! Join us on Talk Recovery Radio's Facebook page streamed live Thursday from 12-1pm PST   About Sober Mom Squad   Sober Mom Squad was formed during the pandemic of 2020. Many moms found they were feeling disconnected and were drinking more than ever. Messaging around alcohol and motherhood was rampant. Maybe you're sick of the wine-mom narrative. Maybe you want to explore what an alcohol-free life looks like. Maybe you just need a community that isn't focused on boozing! We are women like you, who don't want their kids to grow up with a mom who needs wine to survive them. Our common goal is to raise children in homes where alcohol is not the focus, and help other women do the same.   Meet the Squad!  Emily  Emily Lynn Paulson is the author of Highlight Real: Finding Honesty and Recovery Beyond the Filtered Life, and the forthcoming Hey, Hun: Sales, Sisterhood, Supremacy, and the Other Lies Behind Multilevel Marketing (May 2023). She has given two powerful TEDx talks, both challenging the status quo of parenting, alcohol use, and feminism as we know it. Paulson has also been featured in major publications such as the Today Show, New York Times, Washington Post, The Seattle Times, Chicago Tribune, Next Question with Katie Couric, and the Tamron Hall Show. She resides in Central Oregon with her husband and their five children.  Kiola I'm a certified nutrition coach and sober community facilitator. After working for over a decade in the fitness industry, I pivoted my coaching to serve exclusively in the recovery and sobriety space. As a woman in recovery, I'm passionate about teaching my community how to use fitness and nutrition to support our sobriety. I'm currently working towards the California state license as a Peer Support Specialist and I feel so grateful to be able to live out my life's passion in a community that is so important to me.   Lainy I work full time as a marketer in the financial services industry. While I do very much enjoy my day job, I have a  passion for mentoring women in the recovery community. I have been sober since August 31, 2020; joining sober mom squad as a member at 90 days. I fell in love with the community and became a host 1.5 years ago. I have made the best friends through SMS and truly look forward to helping women every day. Sobriety, recovery work, and Sober Mom Squad has changed my life in so many beautiful ways.

Have you ever taken a step back and wondered why alcohol seems to be a prerequisite to adulting? Likely not. We're bombarded with advertisements, movies, messages, social media and general cultural acceptance of the use of alcohol. Prior to my exploration of my relationship with alcohol and the role it plays in my life, I never thought to question these messages that surround us every single day. I assumed, like most, that alcohol use was normal, part of a healthy diet and mostly safe. In the past four years (basically since Emily has been so open about her journey) I've begun my own journey of diving into the world of alcohol. I've listened to audio books, read books on the subject, checked out podcasts and blogs, and deepened my relationship with Emily through thought-provoking conversations around the topic. What I've learned is nothing short of eye-opening. Wherever you're at with your relationship with alcohol, I hope that you choose to listen in on our conversation. The Sober Mom Squad is just as it sounds: A Squad of Moms who are already sober, those who are just dipping their toes in exploring an alcohol free lifestyle, and everything in between! It was my pleasure having the entire squad on the pod. What an honor! Listen for all things mommy wine culture, holiday advice and best of the show…. WHO IS ON THE NAUGHTY LIST? No topic was off limits and the squad was a delightful mix of intelligent, fierce, pretty funny mommas. “This group was started during the COVID pandemic from an instagram post by the founder, Emily Lynn Paulson, asking how she could be of service to her audience. Jen Elizabeth, Michelle Smith, Celeste Yvonne and Jessica Landon immediately answered the call, and the Sober Mom Squad was born! As mothers, we need to connect, share experiences, share expertise, hear stories, and tell our own.  We need to know that we are not alone, and we need to feel that we are in a safe environment away from judgement and stigma. So, we started hosting a weekly free virtual meeting over zoom, discussing all things motherhood, the trials of suddenly homeschooling, the new dynamics of home life, and doing it all without "mommy juice." We found that this community filled a need that had never been filled before, so we expanded it to help even more women. Women, just like you, who are inundated with wine memes and spiked seltzer ads, yet demand MORE for yourself and your families. Women like you, who don't want their kids to grow up with a mom who needs wine to survive them. The five of us have very different backgrounds, live in different states, come from different walks of life, have different areas of expertise and training, and have different sobriety journeys. Our kids range in age from infant to 16 years old. The thing we have in common is a desire to raise children in homes where alcohol is not the focus. Our common goal is to help other women do the same thing.” – Sober Mom Squad MEET THE SQUAD: Emily Paulson: Emily is a writer, speaker, Certified Naked Mind Coach. The Truth Behind Those Online Drinking “Highlights”. Getting Real With Emily Lynn Paulson. How “real” are all those images you see online?  The perfect Instagram families? The fancy business trips? The carefree Mom's Night Out?    Today my guest is an author, a speaker and my friend, Emily Lynn Paulson. In our conversation Emily and I dig into the truth behind the “Online Drinking Highlights” you see as you scroll through your social media feed.  Emily and I know that so many women struggle with their drinking, quietly, in private, and in their own heads - just like we did.    You might look around and see everyone else is posting a photo of the sophisticated cocktails at a bar on a date night, the pictures of friends all drinking together around the firepit, or the vacation pictures with the margarita at the beach.   And the truth is, you have no idea what anyone else's relationship with alcohol looks like, or what their marriage feels like, or how well they're coping with being a parent and with their jobs.   In this episode Emily and I talk about:   Why Instagram, Pinterest and Facebook set expectations so high for what a successful woman, mother and wife is “supposed” to be that most women inevitably can't measure up. The reality of what our lives, our jobs, our marriages and interactions with our children looked like as compared to the pictures we posted online.   Why posting your highlights on social media is such a draw. As Emily says “In those Instagram squares was the life I wished we were living: a happy marriage, a healthy wife, a happy motherhood. Behind the scenes though, we were barely surviving.”  How you can both love your kids and feel grateful for them, and also feel that motherhood is hard, draining and (yes) unfulfilling.  And why finding a safe space of women to share your struggles and honest experiences - both good and bad - can be a game changer in living a happier life.  In this episode, you learn: How to navigate the drinking culture of parenthood and “mommy juice” How to connect with your partner again after quitting drinking Why it's hard to quit alcohol when it has become part of your love language How not to gravitate toward the pretty images on Instagram and take those photos as real life because the hard stuff is hard to look at both on Instagram and in our own lives.    Emily Lynn Paulson is the author of a powerful memoir about her life, her family, her successes and struggles, excessive drinking and disordered eating, and her realization that drinking wasn't working in her life anymore.    Emily is a certified professional recovery coach, She Recovers Designated Coach, This Naked Mind Certified Coach, founder of Sober Mom Squad, and a member of the long-term recovery community.    She has appeared on media outlets including The Doctors, Parade, Today Parents, and USA Today, discussing how to end the shame and stigma of mental health by and substance abuse disorder.   Emily has been sober since January 2, 2017, her recovery path is focused on ruthless honesty, grace, self-love and is documented in her memoir, Highlight Real: Finding Honesty & Recovery Beyond the Filtered Life.  Paulson's resources include one-on-one coaching, to help others evaluate whether or not alcohol is serving them in their lives. Paulson resides in Seattle with her husband and their five children.     Shownotes: www.hellosomedaycoaching.com/21 Grab your  Free Sober Girls Guide To Quitting Drinking Grab your Guide To The Best Quit Lit Books For Women (Including Emily's book)     Links and Resources mentioned in this episode   Connect with Emily Lynn Paulson   Book: Highlight Real: Finding Honesty & Recovery Beyond the Filtered Life   Website: www.highlightreallife.com Instagram: Highlight Real Recovery Facebook: Emily Lynn Paulson   Connect with Casey McGuire Davidson   Website: www.hellosomedaycoaching.com Instagram: Casey @ Hello Someday Coaching (@caseymdavidson) Listen to more podcast episodes to drink less + live more.
