You've checked all the boxes and you've reached a point where many other people would be satisfied, but you know you are ready for more. Do you know what life looks like when you get ‘there'?And do you know how to get from here to there? In this episode of Leadership is Feminine, host Kris Plachy talks with guest and former client, Clotilde Dusoulier. Clotilde is a food writer and coach, helping men and women better the relationships with themselves and define success on their own terms. Clotilde's podcast "Change Ma Vie" and her new book "La Methode Change Ma Vie" are all about defining your personal success and avoiding the trap of toxic positivity. It's not about avoiding difficulties, but rather learning how to negotiate them. Ever felt that unsettling feeling or like something is missing? Clotilde explains that for many, they choose to push away those feelings with temporary relief in the form of buying more or eating more. Instead, she recommends sitting with the discomfort and being inquisitive in order to determine what needs to change on the inside, and that by answering those questions, life will naturally and beautifully unfold. Kris and Clotilde also focus on the importance of seeking out new projects and maintaining a commitment to growth. Change in life is inevitable, and it is critical to avoid stagnation and find ways to be flexible. As Clotilde says: "We need to create a life in which we can appreciate what we have and where we are, and also be sowing the seeds of something new and pursuing growth." This is an enlightening conversation between two kindred spirits, both committed to helping people live exceptional lives. Tune in to Leadership is Feminine and find out how to be the difference for yourself and for others! Even in response to events which normally would evoke sadness, such as loss or hardships, positivity is encouraged as a means tocope, but tends to overlook and dismiss true expression. Spiritual Spotlight Series with Rachel Garrett, RN, CCH

Toxic positivity is a phenomenon that has gained attention in recent years. It refers to the tendency to always maintain a positive outlook, even when faced with difficult or negative situations. In this podcast, we explore the concept of toxic positivity, its impact on individuals and society, and how it differs from genuine hope and optimism.First, we examine the roots of toxic positivity and how it can lead to invalidating people's emotions and experiences. We discuss how it can prevent people from seeking help and expressing their true feelings, ultimately leading to emotional repression and psychological distress.Next, we differentiate toxic positivity from genuine hope and optimism. We explain how hope and optimism involve acknowledging negative emotions and challenges, but also believing in the possibility of positive outcomes and taking steps towards them. In contrast, toxic positivity involves denying negative emotions and dismissing the struggles of others, often leading to superficial and unhelpful advice. Finally, we discuss the importance of finding a balance between positivity and realism. We highlight the benefits of maintaining a positive outlook, such as improved mental and physical health, but also emphasize the need to acknowledge and validate negative emotions and experiences.Overall, this episode  provides insight into the harmful effects of toxic positivity and offers strategies for cultivating genuine hope and optimism while avoiding the pitfalls of toxic positivity. But I learned that MLMs are actually a way for women to exploit other women. I saw the links between the pseudoscience, white supremacy, and, yes, racism that infiltrated MLM life. I'm speaking out to spark change."  -Emily Lynn Paulson Emily and I discuss: how Emily ended up in an MLM, why MLMs are often pyramid schemes, how the consultants are actually the customers, why terms like “bossbabe” and “ladyboss” are misleading, why MLMs are often described as “cultlike”, Emily's quick rise to the top of her organization and how her white privilege and pre-existing financial security made that possible, exclusion, religion and racism in MLMs, the role of “love bombing” and toxic positivity in MLMs, how MLM life encouraged her drinking and brought her to a rock bottom moment, how she exploited her cancer diagnosis for her business, the truth behind the “all-expense paid” trips and cars, the darker side of MLMs and why she decided to write this book  how it turned out differently than she'd expected. Toxic positivity can take all sorts of forms, but I think it's most easily recognised by someone telling you to be happy about something when you just don't feel it. It's a really odd, nasty, weird feeling when a person tells you you're basically not allowed to be grumpy or even neutral, you MUST be happy. How many times have we all been told to “smile” by someone? I think it's interesting when it involves pop-culture: When you're not allowed to criticise things or dislike them. People do this with nationalism, politics, brands, products, cars, celebrities etc, but it's really telling with pop-culture. The whole “Shhh, just let people enjoy things” meme: It has a good side but also quite a big dark side as well. Being relentlessly negative and stomping all over other's enjoyment of things is a real dick move, so yes, let them enjoy the thing. The dark side of that is when people use it to shut down ALL criticism. I've been in groups where they ban people for saying anything at all bad about certain shows or the characters in them, even as a joke. That's quite a toxic environment. For example, not only must you like every Star Wars movie and not make fun of any of them or any character, you must also like all the TV shows whether it's Lego Star Wars, Clone Wars, or even the games. Disliking any can “ruin someone else's enjoyment” so you get a ban. Then there are the people who stomp into the middle or of a group happily dedicated to the enjoyment of criticism and use the “…let people enjoy things” line on them, not realising that they're refusing to let those people enjoy what they were into. Yes, people shouldn't be dicks about things, but people shouldn't be super “positive thinking” thought-police either, which is worse because it induces stress and pushes people out of fan communities. She also teaches at Columbia University and the City University of New York. I could go on and on about her achievements. But, what I want you to know is that our conversation revolved around a well-known existential female philosopher (Simone de Beauvoir) and how her beliefs are relevant today. What is fulfillment? What does it mean to be authentic? What is happiness? How does our impending death inform us about the lives we lead? How do women perceive these concepts and major milestones in life differently from men?

Or what if the promise of that good life is totally bogus?✔️ "An attachment to a significantly problematic object." "What doesn't kill you only makes you stronger." "God only gives you as much as you can handle!" Toxic positivity is positivity that's taken a wrong turn. It dismisses our true feelings, minimizes what we're going through and leaves us with feelings of guilt for being unhappy. And it's typically rooted in someone else's uncomfortableness with vulnerability. In this episode, Jenna and Amanda unpack the most annoying ways one can add a dose of toxicity into their support and give ideas for better ways to respond when someone drops bad news on us.  This episode is going to wrap up Season 2 for Toxic. Right? Well, what happens to society when we keep saying to ourselves it's all going to work out in the end.  Key facets of our daily lives appear to be shrinking, instability reigns and we keep shrugging our shoulders and moving on. After all, this is the U.S., right? WE'RE EXCEPTIONAL'.  We delude ourselves into thinking the worse will not happen. 'IT CAN NEVER HAPPEN HERE'. In today's episode we explore examples of toxic positivity.  What does toxic positivity look like? What are the consequences to our society when we keep adjusting to a new normal that looks an awful lot like a nation built on weak economic policy and even weaker social cohesion.  When is it ok to call out the worst of our behaviors to each other. And can't we address real social issues, call out real political enemies of our democracy while still remaining mature and hopeful? Seems reasonable to us.  Just remember, EVERYTHING IS AWESOME!

Greetings to the Living. Thank you for choosing to listen to Up Is Down and double-plus-good thank you to all who support this work. In this episode I take a slight turn from the track I was on previously and examine the relationship I, and we, have to the world around around us and identify the toxic back and forth games run on us at all times. Chances are you've been in a toxic relationship with a narcissist, considering the world is quite full of them. It's quite possible that YOU are that narcissist or that toxically positive person or even just the punching bag target of abuse from that person. If that is the case, and given the extremes of those relationships, it's not easily to avoid falling into the classic bait-and-switch abusive techniques that are the baseline for even simple communications and everyday functions within the relationship. Our abusers know us very, very well. Now, expand that co-dependent toxic relationship up and out of the household to understand the nature of the systems of society we create and interact with. By clocking and tracking the abuse patterns and techniques of toxic, narcissistic interpersonal relationships and then the suffering and cognitive dissonance we live with in our sick, medicated, depressed and terrified society makes perfect sense. What is Toxic Positivity? How to avoid it and what to do when confronted with it.  One definition in the context of overstressed teachers during the pandemic includes "toxic positivity as focusing on the positive and ignoring the negative. This mindset has caused a lot of teachers to feel guilty, stressed, and overwhelmed." One mental health website's definition, "Some signs of toxic positivity statements may be dismissing emotions, minimizing someone's experience, giving one's perspective instead of validating someone's emotions, shaming someone for expressing frustration, and brushing things off."

Many of us are optimistic and try to find the silver lining no matter what, however their are those times that pain, suffering, and turmoil are part of life, how do we deal with it for ourselves and how do we talk to our friends and family when they 're going through turmoil? We will be understanding the difference between optimism and toxic positivity and how to be more aware of our words and the words of others. There is nothing wrong with positivity however we want to be aware of other's feelings and needs when going through stress and pain. A family member may use toxic positivity and it may be making you feel weak, depressed, or that your feelings are wrong.

Is gratitude an attitude? Is optimism a strategy? Sure. Those positive approaches to life can certainly benefit our mental, emotional, and physical health. But when we don't allow them to co-exist with the hard parts--when they become avoidance or denial in disguise--they can become shallow and toxic. Thea and Kate discuss the importance of acknowledging and embracing the full range of experiences, including the sucky ones, so that we can release expectations that we or others should always be cheerful.

You know the sensation you get when people discount your feelings? Like when you’re noticing a feeling and someone says, “Just think about something good or happy.” That’s toxic positivity. Being positive has become a new normal for moral correctness and it’s actually causing us harm. Toxic positivity is the belief that no matter how dire or difficult a situation is, people should maintain a positive mindset. It's a "good vibes only" approach to life. And while there are benefits to being an optimist and engaging in positive thinking, toxic positivity instead rejects difficult emotions in favor of a cheerful, often falsely positive, facade. In this episode, Love Coach, Rosa Maxwell and I speak openly about our behaviors of toxic optimism (a term she coined for herself), some examples of toxic positivity, and why we should show up to our difficult feelings. We discuss a little bit of shadow work integration, and some stuff around “the need to fix” and why we want to take away peoples pain. Rosa shares with us an example in her own relationship of how to redirect your partner when they are “trying to fix you.” Interesting in working with a Sex & Relationship Coach? The role of technology and social media in maintaining connections has been very important, but has also caused problems when it hasn't been used properly. A balance is required in identifying 'happiness', it doesn't always need to be goal orientated, you can be happy but still have further ambitions. Unhappiness has led to mental health problems. It is ok not to feel happy all the time. Happier people find it easier to form professional relationships.

We can find ourselves in the "Toxic Waltz" if we deny too much that we can explain. Denial is a byproduct of toxic positivity. The state of being overly positive at the expense of your emotions. Telling yourself you got a fist full of diamonds and your holding lint.  So many of us want to believe what we want to believe is so. Yet doesn't make it tangible. But by believing in something so hard it can cause delusion. When you ignore your emotions to constantly look at everything in the rosiest of terms, leaving a zero sum game.  We need to stop being overly positive, when so many of us need hope and we are only judged. Sometimes you just want to yell at the top of your lungs, "I am mad as hell and I am not going to take anymore."
