The Ultimate Sacrifice: Honoring Corporal Jason Dunham's Legacy In this week's Team Never Quit Podcast, we learn the vivid details of the events leading up to the courage, love, and self-sacrifice made by Medal of Honor recipient, Corporal Jason L. Dunham of Kilo Company, 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines in Karabilah, Iraq. What a leader by example Jason was - to the point of throwing himself onto a grenade in an effort to save his comrades. Marcus' guests, David Kniess (Veteran & Producer) and Lieutenant Colonel Trent Gibson (Dunham's Company Commander), not only bring Jason's story to life, but discuss the compelling and engaging upcoming documentary - The Gift. The Gift documentary is a personal project for David, who had a chance meeting with Corporal Dunham. That chance meeting led to lifelong friendships with the Dunham family and a core group of Marines from Kilo Company. David is actively involved in the Veteran community and has volunteered his time, producing content for Veteran Organizations such as Beteran, Stop Soldier Suicide, John Preston Music, and The Boot Campaign. David also served in the United States Navy aboard the USS Normandy (CG-60), a guided missile cruiser. In this episode you will hear: • Having the Dunham's in my life has enriched my life. (10:52) • It's not just about Jason; it's about everything that has affected all of you all those years. (15:46) • Our generation and the younger generation is standing up and saying, “I'm not gonna wait for anyone. I'm gonna jump out there and teach guys how to surf, how to sing with dogs, start a podcast, and we're talking about our shit. (22:44) • [With regard to this film], all I care about is what Marines, Sailors, Airmen and Soldiers think. For veterans who are still struggling, I want them to watch it and say “if these kid can do it, maybe I can do it too.” (26:44) • I want civilians to know what it's like for young men & women to go to war. (27:23) • [Marcus] If somebody threw one of those “Thank you for service” lines at you – even if you haven't done something – it's coming…” (28:04) • I believe in 3 things as a Marine. I believe in leadership by example; I believe in self-sacrifice for the greater good; and one man can make a difference. (33:06) • Jason had the leadership qualities to lead a rifle squad of American sons. (37:39) • Any leader who inspires his subordinates through personal example, to then return the favor and take care of him – that's a true leader. (47:06) • Dunham was a big boy. He's not someone I would choose to grapple with. (54:38) • Jason took off his Kevlar helmet, placed in on the grenade, and then laid down on it. (64:41) • Knowing what I know of him now, he loved his marines so much. He didn't just take care of them, he practiced taking care of them. Who fucking practices covering a live grenade with their helmet? Carrying the weight of history and expectation poses a particular challenge for some European brewers, but nowhere is that more apparent than in the world of Belgian brewing. How, in the face of changing technology and consistently variable ingredients, does a brewer stay true to the ideas behind the classic recipes that underpin the core beers that their brewery produces? Over the past two decades, these are exactly the questions that St. Bernardus (https://www.sintbernardus.be) brewmaster Wouter Dely and sales and marketing manager Marco Passarella have had to face. In this episode, they discuss: Adjusting classic recipes to today's modern brewhouse reality Working with barley that varies year-to-year by adjusting step mash times and temperatures Using Belgian candi sugar in brewing abbey-style beers Maintaining healthy fermentations using techniques like drauflassen (https://beerandbrewing.com/dictionary/KU8vZ0OyWJ/) Fostering ester production by limiting head pressure in cylindroconical tanks Using different temperature glycol in fermenter jackets through the course of the fermentation Time as an ingredient in brewing The mechanics of bottle conditioning And more. In Anzegem, Belgium, about 20 miles southwest of Ghent, Brouwerij 't Verzet (https://brouwerijtverzet.be) is no cover band. Sure, they could make some local waves by brewing up Citra-Mosaic hazy IPAs, but what would that mean to the strong brewing traditions in their corner of Flanders? Rather than play someone else's tunes, could they instead take the familiar, culturally significant notes that everyone around them knows, and play them with a swagger and attitude that helps people see them in a new light? Or, as cofounder Alex Lippens muses, could they drink these innovative hazy IPAs from the United States, learn from them, and inject that knowledge back into classic Belgian styles, to help move those traditions forward? Couldn't they develop their own take on a classic Flemish style such as oud bruin—but instead of making it taste like Rodenbach, make it feel cool and relevant for a younger generation of drinkers? These are among the questions that Lippens asks throughout this episode. While the answers are still in progress—check back with the Verzet team in 40 years, maybe, when their brewing careers are complete—he also touches on: pushing the borders of drinkability and excitement rethinking Michael Jackson's categorization of oud bruin and Flemish red ale brewing with a heavy caramel-malt load and 20 percent unmalted barley using techniques such as cereal mashes and extremely long boils to build flavor and texture blending parts of seven different barrel-aged base beers into Verzet Oud Bruin maintaining and using a wild-caught mixed culture promoting quicker Lactobacillus action by restricting hops and pitching on fully fermented wort building an impression of fruit flavor without using actual fruit blending to a total acidity goal And more. Mythmaking and superstition may play a role in others brewers' approaches to making lambic, but for Thomas Vandelanotte—brewmaster for Belgian breweries Timmermans (https://brtimmermans.be), Bourgogne de Flandres (https://www.bourgognedesflandres.be), and Waterloo (https://waterloo-beer.com)—science is a far better tool for achieving great-tasting beer that people want to drink over and over again. “I think it's important, first of all, to not talk about lambic as a wonder of nature, but it's something that can be completely scientifically followed-up,” Vandelanotte says. To that end, he and his team have engaged in deep study of their own brewery environment, the dynamics at play through fermentation and aging, and every barrel or foeder that finds its way into an oude gueuze blend. Their goal is balanced beer—flavorful, citric, not too acidic—and they're intentional in both adhering to the historical parameters of lambic brewing while also using all the modern abalyticak tools at their disposal. In this episode, Vandelanotte discusses: the 118 different yeasts they've found in their environment and fermenting beer growth dynamics over time of different yeasts in lambic the similarity of young fermenting lambic to New England IPA using oxidized hop pellets without destroying what's good about the hops themselves, because “lambic is not the [trash] bin of the hops industry” avoiding low-oil hop varieties and embracing hops of various origins, including U.S. hops the origin of barnyard character in lambic using a variety of barrel sizes and foeders for different fermentation and wood impacts analysis of foeders and barrels to build statistical basis for a theoretical blend that's confirmed or adjusted through sensory flavor differences in types of acid that don't track to titrations open fermentation at Bourgogne de Flandres to drive ester production fermentation dynamics in oud bruin And more. We're obviously well synced together as a team, but I really liked the way that we've been able to spread out each of those. And though we understand they work together, and it's all a part of again that master donor attorney, we've treated each of these with the attention to care that they individually need.”This episode of Unplugged features Cameron Bartlett, VP of Performance Marketing at Stop Soldier Suicide. Flashback Episode of The Father Time Podcast with Jamie KalerJohn Preston is a Concore Entertainment recording artist and full time firefighter. John was a Marine Corps field wireman from 2000 to 2004 achieving the rank of Sergeant in his 4 years of service. John was with Second Battalion Seventh Marines (2/7) and served as a mission squad leader for 2/7 H&S running over 100 combat missions while in theatre.John began his music career while in Iraq writing his song "Good Good America" which became an overnight success and gave John his first shot at the music industry signing a record deal upon his return from Iraq. The song and video inspired by Iraqi school children was a national media topic and was viewed hundreds of thousands of times in 2004.John returned to the music industry in 2014 signing with Pacific Records and quickly releasing his first single "this IS war" in October of 2014. The song also became a national media topic when the Marine veteran made a call to action to veterans across the nation to stand against ISIS which had just made a surge through Syria and Iraq. The music video had thousands of views and secured John a second release with Pacific Records.Just one month later, John released his Los Angeles Music Awards nominated EP "Your War is Over" and again took to the media. This time the topic was very different. John and two Marine bandmates had released a veterans tribute album that he referred to as being for us by us. John highlighted veterans' struggles with Post Traumatic Stress and suicide and took the fight public with several TV and radio appearances across the United States. John and Pacific Records partnered with Boot Campaign and donated 30% of album sales to help combat PTSD. John and his band took to the road and raised thousands of dollars up and down the coast of California for several different veteran charities all while never accepting any payment and giving all proceeds from the events back to the cause.Still receiving accolades and media for his "Your War is Over" EP, John took to the studio again and in September of 2015 released in the Top 100 New Alternative Albums chart with his second EP "Day to Night." With this EP, John told the story of a Marine he was connected to that was killed on his last day of combat. Again, John took to the media continuing with his fight against PTSD, veteran suicide, and also reminding the people of America that the country is still at war. The album was released on the one year anniversary of the death of the Marine for whom he had written the song. John's video for Day to Night has had hundreds of thousands of views. Rather than celebrate his success, John continued to play charity events and do media all over the country now becoming a national advocate against veteran suicide.John's life took a turn of tragic irony when in January of 2016 John's own brother fell victim to post traumatic stress and took his own life. The passing of his brother was enough to make him consider ending his career, but has instead fueled his hard work and passion and his new single "superman falls" on a compilation album titled Battlecry: Songs of America's Heroes. Preston Executive produced the album and was the driving force which saw the album reach #21 on the iTunes rock charts and continues to spread not only through the veteran community but the mainstream.John signed with Concore Entertainment/ Universal Music Group and his single "before I am gone" started pre-release worldwide on September 5th and will release October 17th with John donating 100% of his sales profit to Stop Soldier Suicide."We are taking our message to the public and today we tell the mainstream that we are here and we are loud. The perception of the broken veteran is a myth that we refuse to buy into. My music is about our lives and the real battles we have and continue to fight: on and off the battlefield. We are here

[Marcus] If somebody threw one of those “Thank you for service” lines at you – even if you haven't done something – it's coming…” I believe in 3 things as a Marine. I believe in leadership by example; I believe in self-sacrifice for the greater good; and one man can make a difference. Jason had the leadership qualities to lead a rifle squad of American sons. Dunham was a big boy. He's not someone I would choose to grapple with. Any leader who inspires his subordinates through personal example, to then return the favor and take care of him – that's a true leader. Jason took off his Kevlar helmet, placed in on the grenade, and then laid down on it. Knowing what I know of him now, he loved his marines so much. He didn't just take care of them, he practiced taking care of them. Who f*cking practices covering a live grenade with their helmet? Nick Black isn’t who you would expect to start a nonprofit, or a tech company. Until you talk to him, and all the pieces come together. After serving in the Army in Pakistan, Nick was faced with a problem he knew he had to do something to solve. So he started a nonprofit. Through that, he discovered the giving experience wasn’t the same for all donors, and he knew he had to solve that problem too. Now he’s on the podcast, sharing how you can capitalize on the ways you already interact with donors to make their experience better and raise more than ever before. The Super Excellent Not Too Serious Bike That Goes Nowhere Podcast
It's hot in Oklahoma, and Meredith describes the misery of having her rower on the 3 season porch (spoiler alert the one of the 3 seasons is apparently NOT summer). Big news with our 20,000th episode play! Summer blah's kick in a bit for Sheldon. Today's guest is Michael Browne who instructs on the bike, rower, and fitpass. He has a great story and the team loves interviewing him. Michael brings a lot of uniqueness to his instruction. One look at him and you know "strength" is a forte. He recently just started a kettlebell series that is amazing. He also brings a lot of fun style including starting the first hip hop tabata series that was a favorite of Sheldon's. And we can't let the interview conclude without mentioning the magnificent specimen that his beard is. Stellar. Follow Michael on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Bfit247 IG: bfit247.mb Tons of industry news, with Hydrow releasing a new lower priced rower. It has the same patented resistance tech, but is lighter, and has a smaller screen. Peloton adjusted the "strike" price for a bunch of options for their employees in a retention effort. Mirror rebrands to "lululemon Studio". Tonal lays off 35% of their workforce.... while also raising the price of their device $500. HUGE Echelon news - you'll have to listen for the announcement! But lots of other things as well - Pitbull Summer Party will run through 8/22. Be on the look out for announcements including a TikTok challenge and the "Treasure hunt". A number of members participating in the Stop Soldier Suicide efforts - please support if you can. Friends, lend me your ears. No really… I need your ears! Would you be willing to be an Audiobook Beta Listener? My Rethinking Rest book is scheduled for release on Jan 19, 2023, and I've decided to record the audiobook myself! Needless to say… I've never done this before. But I've started the process and I'm needing some feedback. That's where you can help!I've uploaded this excerpt from the first chapter of the Rethinking Rest audiobook. I'd love it if you would be willing to give it a listen. While listening: you can access the Electronic Endnotes for reference:“Electronic Endnotes” LinkAfter you listen: I'd appreciate just 5 more minutes of your time to fill out the feedback form at the bottom of this page:https://rethinkingrest.com/audio-beta/The whole process shouldn't take more than half an hour.I'm also testing out another innovation, Interactive Electronic Endnotes. Have you ever listened to an audiobook that you know has extensive footnotes… but they don't reference them in the audio version of the book? Yeah… that bugs me too. So here's what I've done. I've uploaded all the endnotes (those are just footnotes put all at the end of the book) to a webpage and as you'll hear, I reference them within the audio version. So when you hear me say, Endnote 16, for instance, you have the ability to pull up the endnote and read it… just like someone who bought the print version. Oh, and did I mention the Electronic Endnotes are interactive? I've gone through the first chapter and linked parts of the notes to further information that's available free of charge on the world wide web. I'm telling you… you can get lost in these endnotes. There's even some funny little easter eggs I've put in there for those that care to hunt around a little. There's a link in the show notes to the Electronic Endnotes as well.In the feedback form there's place to let me know if you'd like to be notified when I've got another excerpt to listen to.Lastly, If all that wasn't a good enough reason to become a Audio Beta Listener… for every verifiable “Beta Listener Feedback Form” I receive, I'll be donating $10 to StopSoldierSuicide.org. I'm taking part in their 25-mile Swim Challenge this month (June of 2022) as a part of my Homes and Help Initiative that I introduced in episode 45. So spread the word! Let's get as many Beta Listeners as possible! Your feedback is valuable to me… and it will also benefit many soldiers who need our support.
How do you connect with your children at the twilight of a 30-year military career? Pick up the game of hockey, of course. SGM Ret. Dan Lopez left a distinguished career as the U.S. Special Operations Command's J6 Communications senior enlisted leader only to find himself busier than imaginable with pursuits that maintain his connection to the warrior community. We were reintroduced to Dan when he introduced Ranger For Life to the upcoming Hockey Heals 22 event at the Advent Ice Center in Wesley Chapel, FL just outside of Tampa. Not enough to just be a member of the Tampa Warriors veteran hockey team, Dan took over responsibilities for marketing the event designed to raise awareness and funds for suicide prevention with the benefiting nonprofit Stop Soldier Suicide. Through our conversation, we learned how Dan's faith was instrumental in providing the guidance and direction needed to continue to serve with honor. Dan came to Christ halfway through his career with the help of Ranger Hall of Famer Chaplain Jeff Struecker. Now, outside of work and time on the ice, Dan also serves as the Chaplain for the Round Canopy Parachuting team. Although not formally trained, Dan continues to serve by providing pre-flight prayer and sharing the good news wherever there is fertile soil. It is amazing the type of organizations and people we run into when we place relationships first in our busy lives. Enjoy Dan's podcast #ForAmerica.

Did you know that more Veterans have lost their lives from suicide since 2001 than being killed in combat? That number adds up to over 140,000+ active duty or veteran service members and military members also are at a 50% higher risk than anyone else to take their own lives. This week, Alexis and Matt are joined by Army Commissioned Officer Veteran, Nick Black. After returning from his last deployment to Afghanistan, One of Nick's soldiers took their own life. The incident greatly impacted Nick's life & purpose, and after researching just how big the problem is, him and some other veterans decided to take action by starting the Stop Solider Suicide Organization. Nick is also the founder of GoodUnited, an organization that offers nonprofits a complete social fundraising solution to understand, inspire and grow relationships at scale. Pop quiz, listeners: How much greater is the risk of suicide that our veterans and service members face versus their peers who haven't served? Before we answer that, let us introduce you to the Nonstop Nonprofit podcast guests today: Nick Black and Tina Starkey. Nick is the founder and CEO of social fundraising solution GoodUnited and he also founded powerhouse nonprofit Stop Soldier Suicide. Tina, Stop Soldier Suicide's Chief Growth Officer, brings a wealth of experience in the social realm, coming from the American Cancer Society as their Sr. Director of Social Marketing.By uniting their abilities and planting a flag in the sand, in 2020, Stop Soldier Suicide raised $4M and gained 100k new donors through Facebook fundraising alone, allowing them to shrink the gap that stretches between soldiers at risk for suicide and our national population. It's a big, bold goal: Service members and veterans have a 50% higher rate of suicide than the national average here in the U.S.One of our biggest takeaways from this conversation is how Stop Soldier Suicide's big, bold goal completely flipped their perspective. Like any other nonprofit, the founders saw a need and wanted to help—but when Nick started thinking concretely and looked at their capacity for impact, he realized that deeper donor relationships weren't just mission-critical, they were the key to being Mission Accomplished.During this conversation, Nick and Tina are the embodiment of expert-yet-excited nonprofiteers innovating on the fly, applying expansive strategies targeted to very specific donor segments, and infusing their work with an urgency that blows past the reservations that often hold donors back, offering them a chance to invest in the lives of those who have invested everything in our liberty.

Miranda Briggs founded the Fight the War Within Foundation in 2020, two years after the loss of her husband, SPC Garrett Briggs, USA (Ret.), to the 22 a Day veteran suicide epidemic. The loss occurred just two short weeks after the birth of their daughter, Essex. Miranda, though devastated by the loss of her love, overcame the tragedy and turned her grief into a call to action, to save others from the same fate as Garrett. https://fightthewarwithin.org/ 1) Stop Soldier Suicide (case management and resource connection): https://stopsoldiersuicide.org/get-help 2) Give an Hour (confidential counseling with counselors who volunteer their time around the nation): https://giveanhour.org/military/ 3) Hicks Strong: (a non-profit that finds confidential virtual counseling): https://www.hicksstrong.org/ 4) H.E.R.O.E.S Cares (emergency financial aid): http://admin.heroescare.org/tmp/ohfmo/ga/CaseMgmt/20WebApp2021.asp
This week, Martha speaks with two U.S. Army veterans, the CEO of Combat Flags, Dan Berei and Combat Flags advocate Ben Breckheimer about their work with the nonprofit Stop Soldier Suicide. Dan explains why he formed Combat Flags after serving, how was inspired to use the company to donate funds to the Stop Soldier Suicide nonprofit and how he formed his close friendship with Ben. Later, Ben tells his story of serving in the U.S. Army first as a medic and later as a cavalry scout, the trauma he faced, how mountain climbing helped him overcome a difficult period in his life and why he got involved with Combat Flags. We've reached the 40th episode of the Run The Race podcast, and hope you subscribe to it, if you haven't already. Our special guest this week is a yoga instructor and military spouse who is back home in Georgia after a 3,018 mile, 82 day bike ride across America! After I introduce her - and talk briefly about completing my first 50K alongside friends in Alabama - (5:33) you'll hear a great chat with Charlotte Gallagher, first about her solo bicycle journey from Portland, Oregon back to Columbus GA, raising more than $3,000 for several causes. She hopes this inspires you, others to go for your dreams! As someone fairly new to long distance biking and camping, (10:43) Charlotte opens up about the fears of this bike trip and fears in life, how she grew up with anxiety and panic attacks, resolved a lot through running and yoga. She also talks about the emotions through this 3 month bicycle adventure, experiencing a lot of kindness from strangers, screaming at continuous hills, crying. How was she able to keep going? How did she figure out where to sleep along the way? In the "Fast Four,"(17:00) we learn about this paddleboard yoga instructor living by "Change your thoughts, change your world," how she stays fit, and a carnival childhood. (20:29) Charlotte tackles the myths about yoga, like needing to be flexible before you do it, being able to touch you toes, ego issues for men and the military who end up enjoying yoga. She also tells us about the benefits of yoga, working all systems of your body, plus peace of mind, flexibility, releasing tension and anger on the mat, and fitness elements for athletes especially runners. Ever tried a tree pose on a paddleboard? And what's it like being a military spouse? (31:08) She runs and does yoga with her husband, an Army Warrant Officer on Fort Benning. He's gone on deployments and now she just got back from one via her bike. She talks more about one of the causes she raised money for, "Stop Soldier Suicide." We discuss the stigma and preventing suicide with the help of movement. (37:25) Charlotte has also spent parts of her life serving others overseas, telling us about teaching English in Mexico and helping with hurricane relief in the Caribbean. (40:41) Along with biking, she also loves running, her "moving meditation" to release energy that needs to get out because of anxiety. In the final segments, (46:15) our "Parting Gift" comes from the beginning of The Bible, "Food for Thought" deals with biking benefits and a teen's bike across America for clean water, then our closing prayer. Thanks for listening! Please share this with your friends using #RunTheRacePodcast. Also, write a quick review about it. For more info, go to www.wtvm.com/podcast/.
For our fourth and final Suicide Awareness and Prevention Month episode, I am joined by two wonderful mental health advocates. The first is Allison Harrison, the founder of the initiative Know Science, No Stigma, an organization focused on erasing the negative connotation behind mental illness. Our second wonderful guest is Kylie Blakely, an advocate for Stop Soldier Suicide. Both of these ladies have lots of experience researching and helping others struggling with mental illness, especially our servicemembers. Topics in this episode include stigma, veteran suicide, and mental health during COVID. I hope you find this podcast episode informational and helpful if you are struggling with mental health issues or if a loved one is struggling. These are good resources for anyone, but especially our servicemen and women as we work to bring those suicide rates down. Want to connect with Allison and Kylie on social media? This is perhaps the most powerful and intense podcast episode I have ever recorded. My guest is Nick Black. Nick has been an innovator and leader at the intersection of business and social impact for over ten years. Nick is the Founder and CEO of GoodUnited, a venture backed Software as a Service (SaaS) startup that helps nonprofits like Wounded Warrior Project, American Cancer Society, World Wildlife Fund create 1:1 relationships with their donors through the combination of data science and human judgement delivered in conversational messaging platforms. Nick also co-founded Stop Soldier Suicide stemming from his experiences leading Paratroopers as a Ranger qualified Army Officer with the 173rd Airborne during 27 months deployed to combat zones in Afghanistan. A senior in high school during 9-11, Nick shares his journey through college, ROTC, and into the Army. As a freshly-minted Second Lieutenant, Nick deployed to Afghanistan near the Pakistan border with the 173rd Airborne Brigade in 2007. This fifteen month deployment was the subject of documentaries and movies, and shaped Nick and his comrades in ways he will never forget. But after safely returning home with all of the soldiers in his unit, one took his own life two weeks after their homecoming. It was this incident that set Nick on the path he blazes today. This is a riveting story about service, commitment, and a burning desire to make a real impact on the lives of others. During Nick's six years of service he was awarded two Bronze Stars, an Army Commendation Medal for Valor and as a Field Artillery Officer, was repeatedly ranked 1st among 50 peer Officers in a premier Infantry Battalion. Nick earned a BA from The Johns Hopkins University. At Johns Hopkins, Nick was a four-year member of the Varsity football team, the first two-time President of Alpha Delta Phi Fraternity and a four-year scholarship winner of the Army ROTC program. Nick earned an MBA from Kenan-Flagler Business School at the University of North Carolina. At Kenan-Flagler, Nick was awarded the Rollie Tillman Award for Leadership, selected as a Kenan Institute Leadership Fellow, was President of the Veterans Club and awarded the 2018 Distinguished Young Alumnus. With Nick Black, co-founder and chairman of Stop Soldier Suicide; CEO and founder of GoodUnited; MBA alumnus of Kenan-Flagler Business School. Army veteran Nick Black’s entrepreneurial journey began when he moved into live combat just seven days into his first deployment. He learned to be part of a team and accomplish what seemed impossible. But after losing many friends and fellow service members to suicide over time – more than were lost to the enemy – he founded the nonprofit Stop Soldier Suicide to get service members the support they need. Black discusses how Stop Solider Suicide thinks about its exit strategy: to find a solution so that the organization no longer needs to exist. Hear his perspectives on learning through failure, the difference between helping and solving, and why he launched a new venture called GoodUnited that allows other nonprofits to create meaningful experiences for every donor.
In today's episode I sit down with Dustin Johnson. He has a really solid athletics background and played all of the sports; including collegiate baseball, but his real passion was long distance running. As a baseball player he would still go out and do his running with the cross country team because of the like-mindedness. Dustin has always felt a connection with runners and running. Dustin is also a Navy veteran and served four years for our country. Several of his tours took him all across the world and gave him a glimpse of places he would eventually run later on. Dustin continued the family tradition of serving and while originally planning on stopping the tradition, picked up the torch from his father and continued the legacy. After his time in the Navy, Dustin began to get plugged back into civilian life, but soon began to face demons when he tried to readjust back into society and ultimately almost perished from trying to escape the weight on his shoulders. Dustin did not want to put his burden on anyone else and speaks about how it is important to put your pride aside and talk to someone. Dustin had an ultra running friend who got him into touch with the Run Around the World organization and this gave Dustin motivation and inspiration. He took this along with his passion of running and set out to be come the youngest and first American to ever complete the 26,500 km (16,400 mile) run across 4 continents. Dustin teamed up with Stop Soldier Suicide to raise awareness for our veterans and the 22 that take their life every day. Dustin shares a lot of his background and struggles and takes us through his race around the world in this invigorating podcast. May is mental health awareness month and this was a perfect podcast to represent how to battle against mental health.

The Defense Department's latest suicide stats are out and active-duty deaths are at a five-year high. Nearly 600 active-duty service members killed themselves in 2018. Stop Soldier Suicide is a nonprofit connecting service members and veterans to mental health services. CEO Chris Ford said DoD can do more to prevent these tragedies. Federal News Network's Scott Maucione talked with Ford about how childhood issues possibly affect service members proclivity toward suicide. Hear more on Federal Drive with Tom Temin.

Andrew Wilkow is the host of "The Wilkow Majority" on Sirius XM Patriot, "Wilkow" on CRTV, and a long time good friend of ours at the podcast. It's now become tradition that every year at Emmett O'Lunney's in Times Square, New York City, he hosts a Veteran's Day event benefiting different grassroots charities in the community. This year, the money is going to Operation Chillout, Wishes for Warriors, Stop Soldier Suicide, Horses for Heroes, and American Warrior Initiative. You'll hear all about what each of them do on this episode. The way it works is that there is going to be a vet ride of bikers from Harley Davidson in Hope, NJ to the bar for the event. If you want to ride, you just need to give a $30 minimum donation which also gets you a shirt, and you can sign up right now for that through Eventbrite. For you non-bikers, be at the bar for the Voices of Veterans broadcast from 1-4 PM EST on November 11th, and long-sleeve shirts will be available there for a minimum $25 donation (that is if any are left by than!) Now, for those of you outside of the area, you can still donate and get a limited shirt through Andrew's webstore. Of course, we also get into some other talk while Andrew joins us in studio. We talk about the midterm elections, and the problems we see in today's mainstream media. We touch on a recent Newsrep article of some disturbing war crime allegations against the Navy SEALs by writer Stavros Atlamazoglou. Also, Andrew tells a great bar fight story about CJ Ramone from Chiller Theatre in New Jersey that you won't want to miss. Suicide rates among veterans has substantially increased in the past decade. A third of veterans are likely to have considered suicide themselves or have been exposed to the phenomenon through other people who have served with them. The consequences of these increasing rates are not felt only within the veterans’ community but stretch far wider for society in general. Students at The Bush School of Government and Public Service conducted research on prevention mechanisms for suicide among veterans, from policy changes to nonprofit work. Togeher with the host they provide an overview of the data available, resources put in place from the public and non-public sector, as well as offer recommendations on tackling policies and initiatives to help veterans deal with PTSD, stress, and post-service re-integration in society. John Preston is a Concore Entertainment recording artist and full time firefighter. John was a Marine Corps field wireman from 2000 to 2004 achieving the rank of Sergeant in his 4 years of service. John was with Second Battalion Seventh Marines (2/7) and served as a mission squad leader for 2/7 H&S running over 100 combat missions while in theatre. John began his music career while in Iraq writing his song "Good Good America" which became an overnight success and gave John his first shot at the music industry signing a record deal upon his return from Iraq. The song and video inspired by Iraqi school children was a national media topic and was viewed hundreds of thousands of times in 2004. John returned to the music industry in 2014 signing with Pacific Records and quickly releasing his first single "this IS war" in October of 2014. The song also became a national media topic when the Marine veteran made a call to action to veterans across the nation to stand against ISIS which had just made a surge through Syria and Iraq. The music video had thousands of views and secured John a second release with Pacific Records. Just one month later, John released his Los Angeles Music Awards nominated EP "Your War is Over" and again took to the media. John and his band took to the road and raised thousands of dollars up and down the coast of California for several different veteran charities all while never accepting any payment and giving all proceeds from the events back to the cause. Still receiving accolades and media for his "Your War is Over" EP, John took to the studio again and in September of 2015 released in the Top 100 New Alternative Albums chart with his second EP "Day to Night." With this EP, John told the story of a Marine he was connected to that was killed on his last day of combat. Again, John took to the media continuing with his fight against PTSD, veteran suicide, and also reminding the people of America that the country is still at war. The album was released on the one year anniversary of the death of the Marine for whom he had written the song. John's video for Day to Night has had hundreds of thousands of views. Rather than celebrate his success, John continued to play charity events and do media all over the country now becoming a national advocate against veteran suicide. John's life took a turn of tragic irony when in January of 2016 John's own brother fell victim to post traumatic stress and took his own life. The passing of his brother was enough to make him consider ending his career, but has instead fueled his hard work and passion and his new single "superman falls" on a compilation album titled Battlecry: Songs of America's Heroes. Preston Executive produced the album and was the driving force which saw the album reach #21 on the iTunes rock charts and continues to spread not only through the veteran community but the mainstream. John signed with Concore Entertainment/ Universal Music Group and his single "before I am gone" started pre-release worldwide on September 5th and will release October 17th with John donating 100% of his sales profit to Stop Soldier Suicide. "We are taking our message to the public and today we tell the mainstream that we are here and we are loud. The perception of the broken veteran is a myth that we refuse to buy into. My music is about our lives and the real battles we have and continue to fight: on and off the battlefield. We are here to show our community and the general public our talent, work ethic and our drive to push forward through all adversity."

Retired Army Lt. Col. Jason Roncoroni joins me on Veteranology to talk about the non-profit Stop Soldier Suicide. Jason joined the organization last year as serves as their executive director. Stop Soldier Suicides takes a holistic approach to helping veterans battling anxiety, PTS, and suicidal thoughts. Through a comprehensive communication plan and supporting caseworker network the veterans they serve are contacted on a regular basis to ensure their safety, well-being, and personal growth. Their goal is an amazing one: To not exist in 10 years or less, because the mission of finding the best solution to the veteran suicide rate has been found. Jason also shares his personal story and discusses in detail the anxiety and depression he felt leave the service and his path to healthy and fulfilling life.
