Scott Hart, fanatic mountain biker, fierce competitor and one to always follow his instincts, shares how he went from humble Indiana roots to becoming one of the premier editorial voices of American mountain biking. While many of you may not know who Scott is, he and Ralf Hauser created decline Magazine in the early 2000's. I had the privilege of working as a staffer at decline with Scott, Ralf and Mark Jordan after freelancing for them. decline has since come and gone, but the impact that magazine had on our community, specifically the gravity side of our family, is still evident today and that's largely because of Scott's voice and vision. His upbringing and experience as a struggling professional downhill and slalom racer, including highlights like competing in the first Red Bull Rampage, gave Scott the foundation and desire to make mountain biking look as appealing and rad to the masses as it really is. In addition to his racing history, we discuss the beginnings of Flow Magazine which eventually turned into decline under their newly-found publishing house. The ups, downs and ultimate end of Hart's run with decline is explored in addition to the founding and demise of the U.S. downhill initiative, Team America. We end up discussing his role at RockShox for a few years after leaving decline and where he thinks the future of mountain bike media is headed. This is a re-issue of both parts 1 and 2 combined from July 2018. Scott asked that it be removed due to personal reasons, but we're stoked to have his permission to re-launch the interview. I hope this episode will inspire you to work hard, enjoy riding bikes and persevere in the face of risk. -gordo

This is a generic example example 3"-wrap and rake hand pipe Material breakdown : 2" section of simax 25.4 hvy wall ($8.00/60") $0.13per inch or $0.26(2"section) 1/2" section of color cobalt firsts ($5.25/18") $0.15 9" section 4mm clear for raking ($0.52/60") $0.09 Estimated total for cost of Goods 3"wrap and take spoon ($0.26+$0.15+$0.09)=$0.50 Propane/oxygen/power is pennies on the dollar if you're able to get liquid oxygen. If you are renting space you still need to calculate your estimated per hour rate. If you pay $1500.00/mo(power,rent,gas) break it down to per day then estimate how many hours you work in a day and use that number as a base calculation. $1500.00/month (30-day month) is approx $50.00/day (per hour in a 10-hr day) $5.00/hr (gases, power, rent) If you can make 10-$5.00 3" wrap spoons per hour your estimated cost per hour is $10.00/hr (power, rent, gas) $5.00+(material x's 10-hr) $5.00= $10.00/hr. to manufacture 10-$5.00 spoons Net-$50.00(10-$5.00 3" w/r)-$10.00(cost to manufacture)= Gross approx $40.00/hr. In a 8 hr day do the math You can see just by getting a good base line down for estimating your cost to manufacture you have the ability to make anywhere from $30-60.00/hr gross profit Gross= income Net =income-cost to manufacture =profit Now take 15% of your gross and put that aside for TAXES !!!!
As the host of the Raise Your Hand Say Yes podcast (now in its fifth year with over 1.2 million downloads!), Tiffany is most interested in telling the truth about a life of chasing your dreams—tangles and all. She's been featured by Inc.com, salon.com, and Flow Magazine and has delivered keynotes both domestically and abroad. With a penchant for keeping it real, her work focuses on how women can stop over-performing for the sake of the life that somebody else dictates for them and instead start saying yes to themselves. Throughout her life, Tiffany has said yes to smart things, big things, and seemingly-impossible things (hello sobriety, starting a business, and having twins!), and along the way, she's learned that the road to a fulfilled life that feels like freedom is paved with bold moves made from deep within our discomfort zones, a vast understanding of ourselves, and a communion with our core values. Tiffany lives in Northern Colorado with her husband and twin daughters and starts as many dance parties as possible in her spare time (ha!).
Episode 210: Aaron Evan- Love Yourself not Your Ego For well over a decade Aaron Evans has been spreading his distinct D.I.Y. brand of rebellious, uplifting and brutally honest artwork around the world. He ran Dove Ink Records, an Indy Hip Hop Label with his good friend Illogic. He published gonzo style articles in counter culture publications found on newsstands around the globe. He toured and traveled. He went viral with his anthem for the people "We All Work". He learned a million mediums of creativity, from directing music videos and blowing glass, to graphic design and music production. Then, in a instant, it all stopped, as 3 years ago he unexpectedly had to step into a role as a caretaker for his father stricken with Dementia and relocate his family across the country to escape his brother who had relapsed on heroin. But, if you know Aaron, you know the one thing he never does, is give up. The story of Aaron's downfall is unapolageticaly tragic. Yet the trajectory of his resurrection is nothing short of astounding. Relaunching his carrier on Jan. 1st., Aaron returned with a new arsenal of artistic offerings ranging from music videos and short films, to a new album (Hope Floats) and groundbreaking line of handmade blown glass (The One Tribe). During his time in the wilderness, sequestered from the city in a life of service to his family, Aaron simply spent every free min his could find refining his craft and renewing his being; Mind, Body and Soul. 1000's of hours in the music and glass studios, in the gym, in field scouting locations, in his home, in the wee hours of the night, making sure every single detail was right before publishing his second novel in life. Over the course of the last 18 months threw countless hours of trail and error, success and failure, and the combined efforts of my entire 20 year artistic career, I have created an offering unlike anything it's predecessor. ONE TRIBE, the first ever music video to couple stop motion animation with glass sculpture. I would estimate I have over 1000 total hours into this project. I've never worn more hats at once. Emcee, Director, Set Designer, Photographer, Graphic Designer, Glassblower, Script Writer, Video Editor, MADMAN! I've often referred to myself as an artistic decathlete, and this is my dissertation to back that statement. I didn't know how to blow glass, nor know if I could even use glass in the stop motion medium when I originally spawned this idea. But innovation isn't birth from certainty, but it's polar opposite, the unknown, the unexplored, the unimagined. I dove into the abyss with absolute disregard for what others told me I could or couldn't accomplish, and produced the nearly impossible, a truly unique and original artistic creation. find the video for one tribe on YouTube https://youtu.be/MLVw9m1v8p4 Follow and Subscribe to his channel https://www.youtube.com/user/AaronEvansTV also on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/aaronevansart/ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sponsors Mountain Glass Arts Monthly Sales MONTHLY BORO SALE PYREX ROD & TUBE 45% OFF (No Promo Code Needed ) This Sale Does Not Combine With Other Discounts. Episode 201- Are you prepared for a disaster? With the recent impact from Hurricane Florence on the East Coast of the United States, specifically The Carolina's, it brought back memories from last year when we were hit hard by Hurricane Irma here in Central Florida. This bring us to this episode which is a replay from my recording outside in the hurricane. I really wanted to give you a sense of reality and why it is so important that you are prepared for an emergency when it comes to packing your important tools and equipment from your studio. This way you can at least work in a fellow artists studio if you are required to evacuate. Every part of the world has the potential of unleashing catastrophic devaststion whether earthquakes, fires or hurricanes just to name a few. As a glass artist we have specific essentials that are used daily to produce the work needed to fill orders and pay our bills. When emergencies happen we have to be prepared to act fast and leave which includes bringing your studio essentials. Here's what I recommend to make sure that when enemy danger approaches you are prepared to cut and run. -Purchase a large plastic bin to store your essentials in and with a big piece of tape and marker label it "STUDIO EMERGENCY BOX". Here's a link to where you can purchase one for cheap PURCHASE HERE I've created a printable check list that will be sent to your email. This list contains some of the basic essentials with space for you to write in you're own extras. Just make sure what you wrote down will fit in one box. By the end of that show he sent me home with a national a-1, a tomato flat full of shorts, and a millions questions to go along with all the answers of the previous two years. I have lived in Clarkdale Arizona my entire life and spent my childhood after about 10 pumping gas, fixing tires and helping my father with automotive repair at his 1940's full service Texaco station (think ding ding, and a guy washing your windows and checking your oil etc.). Dropped out of high school due to boredom and got my GED a week later to go right into college for self enrichment where I studied a bit of everything but focused on the sciences mostly. I spent the first few years focusing on solid sculpture, pendants, miniatures and on the fly objects for Zak during the two months the faire was in state. All the while I spent as much spare time as I could muster working glass. Until I met Robert Occhiline when I was 15 I think who taught me the basics of working with hollow and how to make a spoon. Do you ever feel trapped by your busy life? Desperate for a little more freedom? Beth Kempton felt the same way. While pregnant with her second child Beth found herself completely burnt out and feeling trapped by her busy schedule. Beth arranged her affairs as they say, and took a 5-month break to relax. During this time she did a lot of thinking and figured out the 8 keys to finding freedom, which she shares with us in this episode. Beth Kempton is a fierce champion of women living free and happy lives, doing what they love. If you were to read her resume from her early career it would include stints working for the UN and at many of the world's top sports events like the Olympics, hosting her own TV show, and the fact that she speaks Japanese, but the most important thing to know about her life now is that she is on a mission to inspire all of us to fly free. For the past six years she has run a company called Do What You Love which has helped thousands of people to create a life that makes them happy, through online courses and retreats. She is also a wife and mother of two sweet girls, and has recently become a Hay House author. Her first book 'Freedom Seeker: Live more. Worry less. Do what you love.' has just come out. Nuggets of Wisdom from Beth: "What you can do, or dream you can, begin it; boldness has genius, power, and magic in it." ~Goethe "If you can see something in your mind's eye, then you almost already know how to do that thing. And when you really do that you become bold and you take those difficult steps and you start to see magic unfold." "For the first time I could see what cage I was trapped in, what it was that was holding me back from the fuller life I used to know...I was just this shell of myself, feeling guilty all the time, not running my business properly, not being a good mother...I was never where I was supposed to be. So if I was playing on the carpet with my baby my hands would be in the game and my head would be in my inbox." "What I discovered was that the key was taking my mind to somewhere where I could get head space and heart space." "It was almost like I saw a free version of myself out in the world and I asked myself, 'What did she have that I don't have now?' And realized that it was space. She had a vast amount of space, both physical space in the places she was visiting, but also space in her day, space in her mind, quiet... And I had none of those things. I was very heavily pregnant so it wasn't really realistic to get on a plane and go to Siberia. But I thought, 'How can I make some space?' and I started really small with 5 minutes here, 10 minutes there... I would just go outside and stand on the grass and look at the sun or have a cup of tea and read Flow Magazine. And then that would build up, I'd go to a yoga class or spend half a day walking on the beach. And that made a big difference and I felt better." Some of Beth's Favorite Things: Personal habit: "I'm really bad at habits. I have a lot of good intentions. I think my lust for adventure and for wanting things to be fresh and new means I'm very, very bad at habits. But I do know that I'm much better in going through my day when I'm organized, so I do like to sit down and plan my week and have a moment of quiet with a cup of tea." Easy meal: "Miso and rice. I lived in Japan so it's definitely my favorite." Favorite kitchen gadget: "Rice cooker." Emma's Favorite Books: The Way of the Peaceful Warrior by Dan Millman. Phenomenal by Leigh Ann Henion Best advice received: "Moisturize your neck every day."~Beth's Mom "Keep your eye on the prize. Don't let other people's opinions of how big your idea can be LIMIT your opinion of how big your idea can be."~Lord David Putnam Beth's Happiness Formula: "Love + Adventure + Freedom." "Happiness is something that happens on the side when you aim to feel free." A Challenge from Beth: "Ask yourself today what it is that's making you feel trapped and to take yourself to a place when you've felt free in your life and look at the difference and think what can you do right now, in this moment, to feel more like you did the last time you felt free." So you think you know a little about borosilicate color, do you? Join Suellen Fowler & I as we take a walk down memory lane and explore the history and chemistry of colored borosilicate glass. Boro is notoriously difficult to color, because traditional coloring agents burn out at the temperatures required for boro. Starting with her early experimentation under the tutelage of John Burton and Margaret Youd, Suellen began creating her own color recipes while still in her teens. Her formulas became the basis of some of Northstar's original formulas back in the '80's. Her hand mixing techniques and incredible attention to detail produced some of boro's best beloved colors, including the rubies & the precurser to the amber purples. Find out how it all happened in this intriguing interview. Excerpts of this interview can be found in print in the Spring 2009 issue of The Flow Magazine. See Suellen in action! Her DVD, “Flamework: An Intimate Art” will show you her famed hand mixing technique, as well as the creation of a fire-breathing dragon, an Aurora bottle, a hobnail perfume bottle with stopper, and a spinning top.
