Anachronism: according to Vogue India, “Designers Salvatore Ferragamo, Roger Vivier and André Perugia have all been credited with inventing the stiletto [heel], sometime between 1948 and 1954.” As so often happens in Parabellum City, Sickubus is a little ahead of her time.https://www.vogue.in/content/the-history-of-the-stiletto3. Catch-2022 paraphrases the “snails and oysters” innuendo from the bath scene from Spartacus (1960), which no one in 1939 would recognize. In fact, the scene was censored from the original release and wasn't widely available to the public until a restored version in 1991.4. Plural, “borborygmi.”Credits:The opening music was from The Sun Sets at Dawn (1950), and the closing music was from Killer Bait (1949), both films in the public domain. BoF founder and editor-in-chief Imran Amed sits down with Anaita Shroff-Adajania, Bandana Tewari, Lakshmi Menon and Bollywood superstar Katrina Kaif to explore the country's evolving beauty landscape. Background:It's been 16 years since Vogue India's inaugural issue put a global spotlight on India's fashion and beauty industries. Today, the beauty sphere in particular is in the midst of a transformative shift, embracing inclusivity and making an impact far beyond its borders. “This is a 5,000-year-old culture of great style and heritage,” said Bandana Tewari, journalist, former fashion features director of Vogue India. “We had to do things to tell the outside world … what our cultural heritage of style and fashion is, that it existed over time.” This week on The BoF Podcast, Imran Amed explores the changing dynamics of the Indian beauty industry through conversations with Tewari as well as Anaita Shroff Adajania, former fashion director of Vogue India; model Lakshmi Menon and Bollywood superstar Katrina Kaif on stage at the second annual Estée Lauder Beauty & You Awards in Mumbai, India. Key Insights: Featuring Australian model Gemma Ward front and centre, flanked by actresses Bipasha Basu and Priyanka Chopra, the first cover of Vogue India “did not really nail diversity, did not nail India. It was trying to package India into some kind of modern context without any of its own culture in play,” Menon says.On the other hand, an inside story shot by Prabuddha Dasgupta showcased traditional Indian beauty, rather than in contrast to the westernised interpretation on the cover. “We had a lot of freedom because it was a space where the western powers didn't know what I was meant to do, so we were left to be ourselves and we were ourselves and we celebrated it,” says Tewari. Colourism is still an issue in the Indian beauty industry. The industry is driven by skin whitening products and Menon recalls a time she turned down a contract which included whitening cream. “It's not always about the money. It's also about who you are and how you want to put yourself out there, especially coming from a country like India, you know, who's had a huge colonial past.” Over time, the need for greater diversity in all aspects of the beauty industry is also essential, beginning in product development. “One thing that came out repeatedly was that there's no research on women of our skin colour. … I feel [the global industry] underestimates the power of the beauty revolution that's happening here,” says Shroff Adajania. For Kaif, authenticity is the key for success in the beauty market in India and beyond. “No amount of advertising can substitute the fact that the consumer and our audiences can see the truth. … They can sense what has been sold to them and what is genuinely coming from a place of authenticity,” Kaif says.Additional Resources:Decoding The Indian Beauty Landscape: Amazon Bets on Indian Beauty BrandHow India's Nykaa Aims to Beat Sephora Hosted on Acast. On this week's episode, I spoke to the super stylish, absolutely wonderful, and very insightful, Hafsa Lodi about her book, Modesty: A Fashion Paradox. Now, I know absolutely nothing about fashion, or what it means to be fashionable. I'm typically seen wearing clashing colours, outfits just thrown together and odd socks. :) However, I am really intrigued by the way the modest fashion industry around the world, and especially in the UK, has grown over the last 10 years. I'm particularly interested in whether something so inward and holding moral weight, 'modesty', can go hand-in-hand with something that it concerned with outward appearance, 'fashion'. Hafsa explores this question and more in her book, and we talk about SO many things in this episode. Modesty: A Fashion Paradox is published by Neem Tree Books. Hafsa Lodi is an American journalist who has been covering fashion in the Middle East for the past decade. She was born in New York City, and at the age of 14 relocated to the United Arab Emirates with her family, where she attended Dubai American Academy while interning after school with one of the region's leading publishing houses, ITP.After completing her undergraduate studies at the Ryerson School of Journalism in Toronto, Hafsa moved to London for a year, where she earned her master's degree in Islamic Law at the School of Oriental and African Studies. The relationships between religion, culture and modernity have always fascinated Hafsa, who covered topics like honour killings in Canada's South Asian communities, the use of DNA evidence in rape cases in Pakistan and the industrialization of the Holy city of Makkah, before turning to the fashion journalism beat. While living in Dubai, Hafsa has written for The National newspaper, Luxury Magazine, Mojeh Magazine, Velvet Magazine, Savoir Flair and Vogue India, in addition to working as an online fashion editor for one of the Middle East's largest luxury retailers, Boutique 1. She is a freelance stylist, and also has a part-time clothing line, creating whimsical maxi-cardigans and kaftans during Ramadan, and statement hand-embellished sweatshirts for the winter seasons. If you've enjoyed this episode, please do consider following, rating and reviewing as it really helps more people find the show. In this episode, we speak to Preti Taneja about her brilliant book, Aftermath. We discuss the ways in which individual actions are mapped onto societal, national and global histories and inequalities. We consider the paradoxical limits of language and writing to articulate grief, as well as a return to other radical writers and thinkers. We discuss the oppression of the prison industrial complex system and its relationship to racism within the UK education system. We speak about the use of shame to denigrate marginalised people and the erasure of colonial and imperial history within schools. We discuss the role of fictions, both within literature and within society, and the ways in which particular narratives have the potential to imprison or empancipate people. We consider the gatekeeping within contemporary literary culture and wonder what literature could look like in a more equitable world. Preti Taneja is a writer and activist. Her debut novel We That Are Young (Galley Beggar Press, 2017) won the Desmond Elliott Prize for the finest literary debut novel of the year and was listed for awards including the Folio Prize, the Shakti Bhatt First Book Prize and the Prix Jan Michalski, Europe's premier award for a work of world literature. Her second book, Aftermath (And Other Stories, 2021) won the Gordon Burn Prize in 2022 and was a New Yorker notable book, a New Yorker best book of the year, a White Review book of the year, New Statesman book of the year in 2021 and in 2022, and shortlisted for British Book of the Year - Discover. Her writing has been published in The White Review, the Guardian, Vogue India, the New Statesman, Granta, INQUE and in anthologies of short stories, essays, literary criticism and prose poetry. She has taught writing in prisons, worked with arts practitioners around the world mediating their own conflict and post conflict zones, and with young people across deprived parts of the UK who want to get published. She is Professor of World Literature and Creative Writing at Newcastle University, and Director of the Newcastle Centre for the Literary Arts (NCLA). In 2022 Preti was named winner of the prestigious Philip Leverhulme Prize in Languages and Literatures 'for her work on combining ethics, politics and aesthetics; developing pioneering hybrid creative forms, including via literary prose to advocate for minority rights.' Deep Kailey is a creative director, consultant and the artistic director of ‘Without Shape Without Form' (WSWF), an interactive travelling exhibition that bridges the gap between art, spirituality and mental health, approached from the lens of Sikh wisdom. Prior to that, Deep held roles at Dazed and Confused, with Kim Jones and at Vogue India, and at one time was the fashion director for Tatler Magazine. It's in the context of fashion that Anne Muhlethaler, host of OOTC, became acquainted with Deep, when she was starting out as fashion editor for Vogue India in London. In this conversation, the two start with a tale of Deep asking herself ‘the big questions' as a young teenager, after the passing of her mother. They talk about her journey through art school, fashion, how she found her way to Dazed and Confused, under Nichola Formichetti, and later her work as managing director for designer Kim Jones, who's now at Dior and Fendi, respectively, as head of mens and womenswear. They move on to cover the story of how Deep found herself reconnecting with her Sikh roots in her late twenties, and she explains the meaning of the ‘game' and the work of Simran, the focused practice for the mind (which sounds like but isn't the same as meditation) that guided her to discover her own purpose and self-alignment. After cultivating this spiritual practise for many years, Deep has been working with a team of volunteers on WSWF, first an exhibition turned arts organisation, which offers visitors an experience which bridges the gap between art, spirituality and mental health. The project is meant to transcend cultural, social and racial barriers, and explores its subjects through Sikh teachings, bringing them into a contemporary context. Anne and Deep also discuss personal values, the dark power of gossip, the meaning of connection (and its opposite), and compare metaphors of inner landscapes and inner abodes, self-concept and safety. A very spiritual, resourced and open conversation. Happy listening! ***You can find Deep via her website https://deepkailey.com/On Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/iamdeepkailey/Without Shape Without Form - https://www.withoutshapewithoutform.com/Simran - https://www.withoutshapewithoutform.com/simran-1Sikhi - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SikhismDazed & Confused - https://www.dazeddigital.com/Nicola Formichetti - http://www.nicolaformichetti.com/aboutKim Jones - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kim_Jones_(designer)Anna Harvey - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anna_HarveyVogue India - https://www.vogue.in/Bandana Tewari - https://www.businessoffashion.com/community/people/bandana-tewariCondé Nast - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cond%C3%A9_NastTatler Magazine - https://www.tatler.com/Kate Reardon - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kate_ReardonThe Guru Grant Sahib, the holy book of scriptures***If you enjoyed this episode, click subscribe for more, and consider writing a review of the show on Apple Podcasts, we really appreciate your support and feedback. Astrology is one of the branches of science that helps a person to go inwards and evaluate the life they are leading. The Moon, Mercury and Jupiter are the most important planets responsible for the wellness of our mind's, therefore understanding astrology and our birth chart can help guide us to living better and feeling better. Cosmic Cures Bex, is a professional astrologer and cosmic coach who helps people align and shine with their own potential via the power of decoding their birth charts. Bex splits her time between the UK and India and has contributed astrology wisdom to Marie Claire, Metro, Vogue India, Glamour and the Independent, also holding moon ceremonies at Lost Village, Latitude and Soho House. In this episode of The Happier Life Project, host Gabby sits down with Bex in India to learn all about how birth charts work and how we can work with them. Bex explains about the importance of knowing about your ‘big three' (sun, moon and rising signs) for keeping tabs on our wellbeing. In this episode we try a new format where we bring you the first parts of four episodes that centre around one topic so you can get reminded of some key points of inspiration, see what you want to go deeper into, and check out the interviews you may have missed. This recap looks at how we can bring sustainability into fashion from various expert angles. We hear from the incredible Sophia Li who was my 2nd podcast guest and is an influential journalist and filmmaker using storytelling to impact climate and fashion. From Bandana Tewari who blew me away with her journey from Vogue India's editor to an advocate. We hear from the Felder Felder twin sisters Dani and Annette about their evolution from catwalk it-brand to bringing their values to the fore, and we touch on their journey with me at Conscious Accelerator, and we explore the future of sustainability and the role of fashion in planet regeneration with journalist and change-making powerhouse Rachel Arthur. Overall, my main reflections are that we can't use buying more stuff as an excuse for being sustainable, but that fashion is an important part of culture and those who can create truly regenerative, transparent and circular models are the ones who will win. By bringing diversity and human kindness together with nurturing the planet, a new paradigm for fashion can be created. Please let me know in a short review which episode, guest or takeaway grabs your attention, and I'll be reading some out as listener shout outs soon. The first weekend of February was a big one for Ahad Elley, AKA Ahadadream. On the Friday, he was featured in Vogue India alongside other South Asian artists and crews currently lighting up UK dance music. 24 hours later, he launched a residency at London club Colour Factory, playing to a packed crowd who, during a brief power cut, chanted his name like adoring teenagers. To outsiders, this might feel like a story of overnight success, but Elley has been grafting away for years: DJing, producing, running a label (More Time), throwing parties (No ID) and, perhaps most importantly of all, co-founding the first edition of London festival Dialled In, which launched last September. As well as showcasing a wealth of South Asian talent, the event fostered a new community of ravers who, in Elley's words, "felt seen in a club space for the first time." When he was younger, Elley shied away from centering his Pakistani heritage in his music. Today, it's a huge part of his identity, from the events he runs and the music he makes to the tunes he plays. But, as RA 825 shows, his DJ sets also go way beyond South Asia and London, spanning gqom, Egyptian percussion, Portuguese Afro house and classic Peverelist. This is Elley at peak time, the kind of thing you might hear at his next Colour Factory gig. "The idea was just to include tracks that bring me joy and make me move," he said. "I hope they do the same for you." Read more: http://ra.co/podcast/825 @ahadadream

Beauty and Fashion Industry is more diverse than ever. But is it diverse enough? In an era of makeup collections with 40 foundation colours and more spokesmodels of colour than ever before, diversity at the beauty counter would seem to be accepted, even celebrated. Yet if you ask influential makeup artists, hairstylists, fashion models and photographers about it, the answer is more likely: It’s a start. Once upon a time, society considered that it knew what was beautiful: young, white, straight, cis, thin, symmetrical, Eurocentric and stereotypically feminine – plus long, golden hair, if at all possible, although exceptions might be made for the occasional raven-haired temptress. The principal elements were fairly constant and all of us got the message, measuring ourselves as lucky or lacking according to society’s stringent conditions. Blonde hair and blue eyes – tick; fat, frizzy-haired and freckled – could try harder. Beauty was expensive, exacting and exclusive, leaving a select few basking in the sun, the rest of us out in the cold. There’s no doubt that diversity and inclusion have been a hot topic in the beauty world for the last few years. And in this week’s podcast episode, Marni will be speaking with Zinnia Kumar, Australian fashion model, colourism activist and published scientist in human evolutionary biology and ecology. Zinnia was born and raised in Sydney, Australia to Indian parents. In 2019, Zinnia was named by Vogue India in the top 50 Most Influential Global Indians list and is a recipient of the Rotary Youth Leadership Award. She is an established Fashion Model having featured in Vogue (India & UK), Elle (UK), Harpers Bazaar (UK & India), Wonderland, Paper Magazine, Tank Magazine, Imprint and many more major fashion brands commercially. Zinnia’s personal breadth of expertise ranges from Inclusivity, Sustainability, Fashion & Media, Empowerment, Industrial/Organisational & business psychology, education and decolonizing & deconstructing beauty and racial identities and dogma. With particular interest in combining Human Evolutionary Biology and sustainability with consumer/marketing and business psychology to create tangible quantifiable change. Zinnia has had a long term commitment & passion for empowerment, authentic representation, deconstructing beauty ideals and stigmatising narratives. As a Beauty Activist Zinnia uses her platform to speak, write and educate people on topics such as Colorism, Challenging and Deconstructing Beauty Ideals, Increasing Authentic Ethnic Representation & Environmental Conservation & Sustainability. In this episode I chat with Anisha Parmar from Anisha Parmar London. Anisha Parmar London is a luxury fashion, jewellery & accessories brand that is inspired by the melting pot of multi-cultural London which she describes as a hub for diversity and cultural cross overs with true British culture. Anisha’s jewellery is for the bold, confident & badass woman. Her designs have been featured in Vogue Italia, Vogue India, Elle France, Elle India, Jungle Magazine, the V&A museum, and even a Snoop Dog music video. Anisha transparently describes the highs and lows that go with having your own brand including the isolation and what happens when a collection is not successful. Something which we don’t hear often but most designers will face at some point in their journey. The minute I laid eyes on the brand, it was love at first sight and I instantly wanted to know more. I hope you enjoy the episode and if you could kindly subscribe, rate and review that would be awesome. This week on Tea & Tattle, I’m joined by the food writer and chef Maunika Gowardhan to discuss Maunika’s wonderful cookbook, Indian Kitchen, and her passion for Indian home cooking. Growing up in Mumbai, Maunika absorbed the rich variety of her mother’s Indian home-cooking, and when Maunika moved to the UK as a young woman, she started cooking family recipes to ease her cravings for proper Indian meals. Word of Maunika’s fantastic dishes quickly spread, kickstarting her career as a private chef. Over the years, Maunika has become an established authority on Indian cuisine. She is a contributing editor for Vogue India, where she shares the latest stories and tips from the international Indian food scene. Maunika also hosts regular cooking workshops, teaching classes at Jamie’s Cook School in London and River Cottage in Dorset. Maunika shares her delicious recipes through her hugely popular website, social media channels and recipe app, Maunika’s Indian Recipes, which has remained in the top 10 recommended apps since its launch. Her cookbook, Indian Kitchen, is a real favourite of mine and brings together many of her family favourite recipes, several of which are inspired by the dishes her Grandmother created. I had a wonderful time chatting to Maunika about how her childhood influenced her love for food, the incredible regional variety in Indian cuisine, the exciting changes that have taken place within the Indian restaurant scene in London over the past decade, and so much more. We don’t talk very much about mindfulness in fashion, but it’s not like the two are mutually exclusive. If the opposite of sustainable fashion is thoughtlessly buying more and more clothes and getting rid of them after just a few wears, then mindfulness surely has a place. Fashion journalist Bandana Tewari is a former Vogue India editor who now writes for Business of Fashion, and speaks globally on India’s rich tradition of fashion craftsmanship. This episode covers that but from a unique perspective: Bandana’s been developing a theory around what we can learn from the great Indian activist Mohandas Gandhi (mahatma means high-souled in Sanskrit). It was Gandhi who lead the khadi movement, uniting Indians in opposition to British colonial rule around the issue of cotton production. How did he develop his sartorial integrity, and what can we learn from that in today's context of hyper-consumerism. As powerful argument as we ever heard in support of the idea that clothes do matter...
