Two-time Grammy nominated duo The Secret Sisters (Laura Rogers and Lydia Slagle) join us to chat about their development as songwriters and reaching new creative heights with their latest album. PART ONE:Scott and Paul chat about Scott's recent trip to see Norah Jones and Lake Street Dive perform at Red Rocks and discuss the ways concerts have changed in recent years. Plus, they take an opportunity to gripe about the changes coming to Southwest Airlines. What does that have to do with anything? Nothing, but I guess they're the ones with the microphones! PART TWO:Our in-depth conversation with Laura Rogers and Lydia Slagle of The Secret SistersABOUT THE SECRET SISTERS:Two-time Grammy nominees Laura Rogers and Lydia Rogers Slagle, known as The Secret Sisters, are Alabama-born siblings who released their self-titled debut album on Universal Republic Records in 2010. Produced by Dave Cobb, the album featured primarily traditional songs and country music covers alongside two originals. The follow-up, Put Your Needle Down, was produced by T-Bone Burnett and found the sisters contributing more original material, including collaborations with Brandi Carlile and Dan Wilson. Both albums reached the Top 10 on Billboard's folk chart. Their next two releases—You Don't Own Me Anymore and Saturn Return—were co-produced by Brandi Carlile, and each earned a Grammy nomination for Best Folk Album. Their fifth, and most recent, studio album is called Mind, Man, Medicine and finds the sisters co-producing for the first time, alongside Ben Tanner and John Paul White, who is best known as half of the duo The Civil Wars. The album was recorded in their hometown of Muscle Shoals, Alabama, primarily at the legendary FAME Studios.

Eric and Erin Warner's grandfather lived to the admirable age of 103. And in that time, the Jewish immigrant to Canada saw Toronto change in innumerable ways, from the migration of Jews out of the Ward and Kensington Market to mass communication shifting from the radio to the internet. It's a life's story that Eric, who's worked in music promotion and production since he was a teenager, wanted to tap into—in part to help his own young children understand where their family came from. He roped in his sister, Erin, to sing on the album, and his longtime friend Jason Craig to help write the songs. The result is a concept album, A Song for Ira, released in February 2024, which debuted with a live show at the Miles Nadal JCC on Family Day. The concept is that two grandparents, Harold and Ruth, are gifted songwriting classes, which they use to write eight folksy tracks about growing up in a bygone Jewish Toronto. Writing about mid-20th century family vacations and longstanding Jewish institutions, the album paints a picture of the past for the benefit of the future. The Warner siblings and Jason Craig join Culturally Jewish to describe the songwriting process and why they believe writing music is an ideal way to speak to younger audiences. Credits Culturally Jewish is hosted by Ilana Zackon and David Sklar. Our producer is Michael Fraiman, and our theme music is by Sarah Segal-Lazar. We're a member of The CJN Podcast Network. Dr Andrew Rumsey is known to many of our readers as the Bishop of Ramsbury in Salisbury diocese, and the author of the highly praised books Parish: An Anglican theology of place (Books, 21 July 2017) and English Grounds: A pastoral journal (Books, 11 March 2022). He is also a musician and poet, who last month released an album, Evensongs, on Gare du Norde Records. The eight folk songs were recorded live on a single summer day in All Saints, Ham, a remote 12th century church in Wiltshire. Dr Rumsey says he set out to capture something of the magic of a country church in August — complete with bees, birdsong, and a whisper of wheezy organ. At the end of the interview, you can hear a track from Evensongs, “It'll Come To Me.” Evensongs is available on Spotify, and digital, vinyl, and compact-disc formats can be bought at: andrewrumseymusic.bandcamp.com Picture credit: KT Bruce Try 10 issues of the Church Times for £10 or get two months access to our website and apps, also for £10. Trauma Stories We Don't Share with Grammy Nominated Mary Gauthier Welcome to Episode #15 with special guest Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter, Mary Gauthier. Today we are talking about stories that we don't feel like we can share. You know the ones, the stories that we call bad, dark, or embarrassing and maybe even just too sad to share. A lot of times there is trauma associated with what happened in this story which becomes wrapped around a shadow of shame that it happened to us in the first place. One thing I know for sure, is that we are close to a breakthrough when a client says this about their story. Why? Often the story we have the most shame around, is the very story that can set us free. Tune in to find out more as Mary share's her own stories behind the songs, and how songs offer a lifeboat to get to the other side of our traumatic stories. You won't want to miss this one! Maybe music really can save your soul! Mary Gauthier's Bio: Photo Credit: Alexa Kinigopoulos “With songwriting as powerful as her, there's no need to go looking for qualifiers.  She's a unique, intrinsically valuable musical voice. And there's never a surplus of those.” Randy Lew, Los Angeles Times. Her eleventh the first record in over 8 years consisting of all her own songs, Dark Enough to See the Stars, follows the profound antidote to trauma, Rifles & Rosary Beads, her 2018 collaborative work with wounded Iraq war veterans. It garnered a Grammy nomination for best Folk Album, as well as a nomination for Album of the Year by the Americana Music Association. Publication of her first book, the illuminating Saved by a Song: the Art and Healing Power of Songwriting, in 2021, brought her more praise.  Brandi Carlile has said, “Mary's songwriting speaks to the tender aspects of our humanness. We need her voice in times like these more than we ever have.”  The Associated Press called Gauthier “one of the best songwriters of her generation.” Mary's songs have been recorded by dozens of artists, including Jimmy Buffet, Dolly Pardon, boy George, Blake Shelton, Tim McGraw, Bettye Lavette, Mike Farris, Kathy Mattea, Bobby Bare, Amy Helm and Candi Staton and have appeared extensively in Film and Television, most recently on HBO TV's Yellowstone. Dayle is the author of 'The Big Dream; My Terrifyingly Beautiful Shamanic Initiation into the Arts' a memoir chronicling what it was like to be called to Shamanism. In this episode, Dayle discusses how she got called to Zulu shamanism and how she is about to embark on the a journey of a lifetime: she is about to go on a six month quest to learn Zulu shamanism and she's making a film about her experience as well (since the recording of this episode her trip was postponed due to Covid). We also tackle many topics surrounding decolonizing our spirituality (and our minds!) as well as appropriation of indigenous culture. Dayle tells us about her spiritual awakening which involved using indigenous medicine, ayahuasca, and how that led to her shamanic calling. How does our shadow play a part in decolonization? What's the healer's sickness? Where does the term "shaman" come from? What does the concept of "No Harm" mean as we work for decolonization of our spirituality? Pull up your brooms and join us! Dayna Manning has just released a fabulous chamber folk album "Morning Light", recorded with Stratford Festival alumnus Ben Bolt-Martin - who arranged all of the songs for a chamber quartet featuring violin, cello, flute and French horn. Morning Light is a fabulous album, with a sumptuous feel - Dayna's beautiful voice gliding over a lovely instrumental accompaniment, on a great selection of original and traditional songs. Dayna has also released a fine memoir about songwriting entitled “Many Moons: A Songwriter’s Memoir” which tells the story of her three decade career in music using twelve of her own songs to guide the way. As well as being a founding member of Trent Severn (who are currently on hiatus), Dayna Manning also runs Folk Army, a private music instruction academy in Stratford Ontario focused on nurturing human potential through the love of music.
