Plus, they take an opportunity to gripe about the changes coming to Southwest Airlines. What does that have to do with anything? Nothing, but I guess they're the ones with the microphones! PART TWO:Our in-depth conversation with Laura Rogers and Lydia Slagle of The Secret SistersABOUT THE SECRET SISTERS:Two-time Grammy nominees Laura Rogers and Lydia Rogers Slagle, known as The Secret Sisters, are Alabama-born siblings who released their self-titled debut album on Universal Republic Records in 2010. Produced by Dave Cobb, the album featured primarily traditional songs and country music covers alongside two originals. The follow-up, Put Your Needle Down, was produced by T-Bone Burnett and found the sisters contributing more original material, including collaborations with Brandi Carlile and Dan Wilson. Both albums reached the Top 10 on Billboard's folk chart. Their next two releases—You Don't Own Me Anymore and Saturn Return—were co-produced by Brandi Carlile, and each earned a Grammy nomination for Best Folk Album. Their fifth, and most recent, studio album is called Mind, Man, Medicine and finds the sisters co-producing for the first time, alongside Ben Tanner and John Paul White, who is best known as half of the duo The Civil Wars. The album was recorded in their hometown of Muscle Shoals, Alabama, primarily at the legendary FAME Studios.

Send Kris and Rob a Text Message.April 24, 2004, Laurel, Maryland. In the suburbs of Laurel, Maryland, the night of April 24, 2004, held a darkness far more chilling than the streets would suggest. Walter Rogers lay sound asleep, blissfully unaware that his life was about to end. Meanwhile, his wife, Laura Rogers, paced the living room with a tumult of emotions roiling within her—shock, anger, and devastation. With a heart heavy with the weight of unspeakable betrayal, Laura grappled with a harrowing truth that had shattered her world: her husband, the man she once vowed to love and cherish, had been violating the innocence of her own daughter from a previous marriage, sexually abusing her. The revelation was a thunderclap in her mind, igniting a firestorm of conflicting impulses. As the night wore on, amidst the muffled sounds of her children sleeping, Laura's turmoil reached its breaking point. A deafening boom reverberated through the house, shattering the silence of the night. In the morning's light, Walter Rogers lay lifeless, a victim of the events that had unfolded in their home. The question echoed through law enforcement and beyond: did Walter deserve to die? Laura Rogers' story is one that blurs the lines between victimhood, vengeance, and vigilantism. A mother, driven to the brink of madness by the unspeakable crimes perpetrated against her own flesh and blood, found herself standing at the precipice of a moral abyss. In a moment of raw agony and righteous fury, she made a choice that would irrevocably alter the course of her life—and the lives of those around her. In the eyes of the law, Laura Rogers was a murderer—a perpetrator of the ultimate act of violence. But to many, she was a mother pushed beyond the limits of endurance, driven by a primal instinct to protect her child at any cost. Her actions, while undeniably extreme, resonate with those who take justice into their own hands when the system has failed. The case of Laura Rogers challenges us to confront uncomfortable truths about the nature of morality, the limits of forgiveness, and the inexorable pull of retribution. In the realm of true crime, Laura Rogers' story stands as a haunting testament to the thin line between right and wrong, justice and vengeance. It is a narrative that defies easy categorization, inviting us to wrestle with the profound moral quandaries that lie at its heart and the uncomfortable reality that the distinction between victim and perpetrator is not always as clear-cut as we would like to believe. In the end, Laura Rogers' legacy is one that will continue to haunt the annals of true crime—a stark reminder of the human capacity for both unspeakable cruelty and unyielding resilience. Her story beckons us to ponder the age-old question: in the face of unspeakable evil, what price is too high to pay for justice?Sources used for this podcastSupport the Show.JOIN THE HITCHED 2 HOMICIDE IN-LAWS AND OUTLAWSSTART KRIS CALVERT'S BOOKS TODAY FOR FREEH2H WEBSITEH2H on TWITTERH2H on INSTA

Over the last 2 decades, Laura Rogers has worked consistently as a hugely dynamic actress on both stage and screen. Her latest role sees her playing Clementine "Clemmie" Churchill in Jack Thorne's new play: When Winston Went to War with the Wireless at the Donmar Warehouse. In this interview, Laura talks about exploring the world of 1926 Britain and the foundations of the BBC. She talks about her personal admiration for Clemmie who was known as a rod of steel and the "backbone to Winston", and what it's been like working opposite Adrian Scarborough's Winston. This is the first time Laura has worked with Adrian and also the first time she has played the Donmar Warehouse which she describes as a very special institution. On this production, Laura is also reuniting with director Katy Rudd whom she worked with on the National Theatre's acclaimed production of The Ocean at the End of the Lane. Here, we're given a fascinating insight into the rehearsal process and she shares her excitement at bringing the piece to audiences when the show opens. In our very special interview, Laura Rogers also gives her take on politics today and how they perhaps differed to in 1926. In a time where various industries are striking and the BBC is again under much scrutiny, we hear Laura talk about the parallels between the events of 1926 and to that of 2023. We also hear Laura praise the work of Jack Thorne as she discusses how unique and epic his writing is and why this piece seems so well-suited to the Donmar Warehouse. After Arts Council England announced it would be withdrawing funding for Donmar Warehouse, there's been great concern about the future of the theatre industry, a concern which Laura shares. However, she also feels assured that the Donmar will continue to thrive as she shares her hopes for the future of the industry. She talks about the family-feel of working at the Donmar and also expresses her admiration for Michael Longhurst as he prepares to step down from his role as Artistic Director. It's a truly fascinating listen and we look forward to seeing her portrayal of Clemmie when the show opens. When Winston Went to War with the Wireless runs at the Donmar Warehouse from 2 June - 29 July with tickets available now. With thanks to Kate Morley PR.

The CA has developed and published a Race Equality Programme with a vision that will ‘tackle systemic injustice and inequality and drive forward positive change for our Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic employees and residents – influencing the partners we work with to do the same.' The Programme has three areas of work: CA as Employer, CA as Commissioner and CA as Facilitator.Discussing the Race Equality Programme, Lorna gave examples of the 2025 achievement targets set out in the Declaration of Intent, the support received for the Programme and the hoped for achievements through the race equality hub.Elaine Bowker is Principal and Group Chief Executive of the City of Liverpool College which as an anchor institution within the city, has a key role in supporting the City Region to ‘build back better'. It’s par for the course around one’s Saturn Return—an occurrence during the end of your 20s, when the trajectory of Saturn returns to the same position it was in when you were born. According to astrology, this is a period of great change in one’s personal life and the duo—Laura Rogers and Lydia Slagle—felt this was an appropriate phenomenon after which to name their new, emotionally stirring, Brandi Carlile-produced album. Ozark Highlands Radio is a weekly radio program that features live music and interviews recorded at Ozark Folk Center State Park’s beautiful 1,000-seat auditorium in Mountain View, Arkansas. In addition to the music, our “Feature Host” segments take listeners through the Ozark hills with historians, authors, and personalities who explore the people, stories, and history of the Ozark region. This week, Grammy nominated Muscle Shoals Americana & contemporary bluegrass singer-songwriter mega-duo The Secret Sisters, recorded live at the Ozark Folk Center State Park. Also, interviews with these superlative siblings. The Secret Sisters are an Americana singing and songwriting duo consisting of vocalists Laura Rogers and Lydia Slagle. The sisters’ music has been compared to artists like The Everly Brothers. Laura and Lydia are from Muscle Shoals, Alabama. With a love for music coming from both sides of their family (their grandfather and his brothers forged a group called The Happy Valley Boys,) they grew up with a zeal for country music and sang songs with their family by country music artists such as Don Williams. The girls first learned to harmonize through singing a cappella at their hometown church. The sisters have produced three albums. Their third album, “You Don’t Own Me Anymore” produced by Brandi Carlile, received the duo’s first Grammy nomination. Aside from touring the world with their unique brand of Southern story telling and impeccable harmonies, the Secret Sisters have appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, and have a song featured on the movie soundtrack for “The Hunger Games.” In this week’s “From the Vault” segment, musician, educator, and country music legacy Mark Jones offers a 1983 archival recording of autoharp master Ron Wall performing the traditional tune “Home Sweet Home,” from the Ozark Folk Center State Park archives. Writer, musician, and traditional dancer Aubrey Atwater presents “Devil Songs.” Aubrey will guide us through the dark angel’s appearance in generations of traditional folk songs with musical examples and her own cultivated insight.

Two years ago, Lydia and Laura Rogers, the Alabama siblings who harmonize together so enchantingly as The Secret Sisters, looked like they had it all figured out. They'd built a sterling reputation with critics and a strong fan base. T-Bone Burnett was their record producer and they were in demand. But behind the scenes, the artists were suffering, at times despondent and afraid all they'd built and all they wanted to do was being torn away from them. They'd been cast adrift by their label. Faced with insurmountable legal bills, they took the extreme step of declaring personal bankruptcy. But they kept that a secret, if you will, from their fans.  But it got better. They leaned on family, faith and an ace in the hole, the friendship and mentorship of folk star Brandi Carlile. They called on their fans for what would be a make-or-break crowd-funding campaign. And they came out with a triumph, an album far more mature, revelatory and contemporary than anything they'd made before. It was the Grammy nominated You Don't Own Me Anymore. Lydia and Laura spoke with The String before a show at the City Winery in Nashville.

Despite dubbing themselves a "baby band" when comparing their short history in the music business to those that have championed their work, Muscle Shoals, Alabama siblings Lydia and Laura Rogers have a strong connection to the history and romanticism of vinyl records. From putting on mini-concerts for each other on their parents' waterbed -- in sync with Highway 101 and Linda Ronstadt albums -- to Jack White recording and putting the duo to vinyl for the first time, the Secret Sisters' love for the medium matches their undeniable devotion to the art of songwriting. Since that first Third Man seven-inch, they've continued to work with producers who eye authenticity as an integral part of their aesthetic: the legendary T. Bone Burnett, current Nashville staple Dave Cobb and most recently Brandi Carlile, who helmed the Sisters' emotional new album You Don't Own Me Anymore, a title that speaks volumes to the trials and tribulations of heartache, bankruptcy and professional distress that nearly killed the Sisters' career since their last record. Today, Lydia and Laura sit down to discuss touring United Record Pressing and watching their first vinyl release being pressed, why vinyl continues to be the measurement by which the Sisters gauge how well their own albums sound, how You Don't Own Me Anymore's exemplary cover art is a familial response to their recent struggles, and some stellar stories involving Levon Helm, Fiona Apple, Elton John and human-sized catfish. El Nino is a weather event that happens every 5 years. It leaves Europe largely unscathed but causes havoc around the southern hemisphere. El Nino causes droughts, floods and has even been linked to an increased incidence of war. And yet it is surprisingly hard to predict. Adam speaks to Professor Adam Scaife, from the Met Office, about unpicking the science from weather chaos. Echolocation is the ability to sense objects using reflected sound. A handful of animal species do this - most bats, some whales and even a few humans. Some blind people use echolocation to navigate the world they can't see. Some make a clicking sound as they walk. Others use the sound of their footfall. In fact, all humans, sighted and unsighted, do it. Adam meets BBC's Damon Rose, who is blind, and they compare skills. Marnie Chesterton travels to Southampton University's Institute of Sound and Vibration Research to meet Daniel Rowan. His team have recently isolated some of the factors necessary to echolocate. The work involved an anechoic chamber - the quietest place on earth and the sound equivalent of nothing. Last week Adam gave the incorrect reason for why we have seasons. Dr Laura Rogers, a physics teacher, puts him right. Dr Rhys Jones, star of BBC TV's Wildlife Patrol talks to Adam about the origin of snakes. A recent paper from a team in Yale hypothesises a common ancestor with tiny hind legs and nocturnal habits. Adam questions why 3400 species of snake have evolved to not have legs, when millions of other animals find them so useful.
