My life is not rainbows and cotton candy clouds and worlds. But what I realized, and the way I looked at it is, I cannot control what happens around me. But I can control how I'm going to react to the situation. I take control of how I'm going to react, as opposed to letting the people or situation dictate it. So I think that's the way that I focus on it is because I'm behind the driver's seat with the help of the steering wheel, I'm going to actually get where I need to go, but not let anxiety overtake it. I'm going to be grounded through the process. Thoughts on Breathing Breathing is really important because I think what happens is the fact that I think we breathe because that's just what we naturally do. But when it's purposeful deep breaths, and you're listening to yourself, when you're breathing, it just calms and slows things down. Autobiography You're able to actually undertake it. I think when we have anxiety, our breath, our breathing, just speeds up and our heart rate goes up. But then, even amidst the storm, if you just sort of calm it down and just breathe, and slow it down, you're able to handle it. And I guess people around me said, the reason we'd like to rely on you is that no matter what happens, you're still calm. And I said, because if I'm not calm, and everyone else around me is not feeling it. If I'm not calm, then they're going to panic. But if I'm calm, there's that calming sense. Now, inside, I may be turbulent trying to figure out how to resolve it. But I'm still very calm. Just let's resolve this. It literally felt like so many students just ganged up on me for no reason whatsoever, not in a physical way, but in a psychological way. In high school, it was like, there were instances when you would get bullied. I would say was not a good time for me. I was awkward, shy, and quiet. Maybe that's why it was easy to pick on someone like me. I wasn't an athlete. I wasn't a person who had gotten into trouble. I wasn't in the band or arts. I was just this nameless, faceless person among 500 students. But I will say at that point, mindfulness never really factored in. It's only later that I can reflect back to say that those instances, you know, have sort of reinforced that. I need to treat people with respect, I need to treat people with care. It's also about listening to other people, so they have an avenue and a way to share. Autobiography Related Episodes Three Simple Steps To A Balanced Life; Trevor G. Sam Thiara is on a mission to support individuals on their journey. Over the last many years, he has mentored hundreds and engaged thousands. In about 5,000 conversations to date, they center around the topic of understanding 'who' you are over 'what' you are going to do. He activates the voice within with a concept called, The Five Core Elements. Sam graduated from university unprepared so his first job was janitor. He later took a career leap into the unknown, leaving a comfortable corporate job and never looked back. With the many challenges with COVID, there are also opportunities as we slowly emerge. Sam shares how we need to CARE during the pandemic and CARE stands for Collaboration, Adaptability, Resilience and Empathy. These four words are so important right now as we move forward.Sam shares his journey to India to search for ancestral roots with a faded photograph and little else. In the process, he also discovered his identity. He wrote a book called: Lost and Found: Seeking the Past and Finding Myself. www.sam-thiara.comhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/sthiara/Support the show (http://www.patreon.com/olr)

Sam had a two-fold story to share with Lady Time, in his early forties he had a yearning to find out more about his ancestral roots as a British-born Canadian of Indian descent ‘before the thread would be lost forever in the fabric of India' as he so eloquently put it. Then a few shorts years later he had a pivotal decision to make in his life – stay in his very comfortable pensionable corporate job or leave and jump into the unknown? He chose the latter. In our conversation he discusses how he navigated that decision when he found himself standing on a precipice with comfort behind him and uncertainty waiting over the edge. Both stories intertwine in a way, where Sam first found a sense of belonging and discovered more of who he was and later realised that the corporate world was no longer a good fit. Sam authored a book called 'Lost and Found: Seeking the Past and Finding Myself' about the journey seeking his roots. He also offers affordable coaching for those starting out or rethinking their career. What does it mean to come alongside someone as a mentor? What is mentorship really and don't we just call that a coach? Who should be a mentor? Why should I become a mentor, who am I? We tackled all of these questions with our guest Sam Thiara this week. Sam has been mentoring people for years and was recognized by the Canadian government for his work. Sam has been seen on the TEDx stage multiple times and is a lecturer at Simon Fraser University. His personal story is even more fascinating, but we are going to save that for another show. Sam took us into the power of mentorship and why you should be one too. Sam's Website is full of incredible information, I love his blogs as well as a blog written to follow up this episode. In today's episode, Connor interviews Sam Thiara, about his new book Lost and Found: Seeking the Past and Finding Myself. While discussing his story you'll notice so many of the themes of this podcast come to the forefront. It didn't take Connor long to connect with Sam and his desire to share his message with the world. To follow Sam and pick up a copy of the book please visit Sam-Thiara.com. About the book: Sam Thiara documents his seemingly impossible quest to find his grandfather's village—armed with little more than a faded photograph.Sam vividly recounts his adventure through India's crowded roads—a journey filled with mishaps and surprising encounters, and a growing sense of purpose. Drinking in the beauty of the Taj Mahal and the Golden Temple, he finds himself connecting more deeply with his Sikh faith, while confronting the ugliness of the country's poverty and injustice. Along the way, Sam also wrestles with his sense of self. A British-born Indian, living in Canada, whose parents came from Fiji, he questions: Am I Indian? Am I Canadian? Am I Sikh? Who am I?As he begins to piece together the puzzle of his history, Sam realizes he is piecing himself together, too. Touching and inspiring, Lost and Found is a book for anyone who has felt adrift in the world, confirming that what was once lost can be found.
