While we might all enjoy a magic trick or an intriguing sleight of hand by a magician, most of us prefer not to be actively deceived in our personal or professional lives. Yet despite repeated calls in recent years for greater authenticity in leadership, there are still leaders in who rely on the magician's tools of deceit and manipulation to further their personal agendas. To better understand the way that magical processes are used and abused by leaders, we are joined by Professor David Hannah of Simon Fraser University. David R. Hannah is an award-winning researcher and teacher, and presently an Associate Professor of Management at the Beedie School of Business at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver. My life is not rainbows and cotton candy clouds and worlds. But what I realized, and the way I looked at it is, I cannot control what happens around me. But I can control how I'm going to react to the situation. I take control of how I'm going to react, as opposed to letting the people or situation dictate it. So I think that's the way that I focus on it is because I'm behind the driver's seat with the help of the steering wheel, I'm going to actually get where I need to go, but not let anxiety overtake it. I'm going to be grounded through the process. Thoughts on Breathing Breathing is really important because I think what happens is the fact that I think we breathe because that's just what we naturally do. But when it's purposeful deep breaths, and you're listening to yourself, when you're breathing, it just calms and slows things down. Autobiography You're able to actually undertake it. I think when we have anxiety, our breath, our breathing, just speeds up and our heart rate goes up. But then, even amidst the storm, if you just sort of calm it down and just breathe, and slow it down, you're able to handle it. And I guess people around me said, the reason we'd like to rely on you is that no matter what happens, you're still calm. And I said, because if I'm not calm, and everyone else around me is not feeling it. If I'm not calm, then they're going to panic. But if I'm calm, there's that calming sense. Now, inside, I may be turbulent trying to figure out how to resolve it. But I'm still very calm. Just let's resolve this. It literally felt like so many students just ganged up on me for no reason whatsoever, not in a physical way, but in a psychological way. In high school, it was like, there were instances when you would get bullied. I would say was not a good time for me. I was awkward, shy, and quiet. Maybe that's why it was easy to pick on someone like me. I wasn't an athlete. I wasn't a person who had gotten into trouble. I wasn't in the band or arts. I was just this nameless, faceless person among 500 students. But I will say at that point, mindfulness never really factored in. It's only later that I can reflect back to say that those instances, you know, have sort of reinforced that. I need to treat people with respect, I need to treat people with care. It's also about listening to other people, so they have an avenue and a way to share. Autobiography Related Episodes Three Simple Steps To A Balanced Life; Trevor G. Dara Kelly is from the Leq'á:mel First Nation, part of the Stó:lō Coast Salish, and is an Assistant Professor at the Beedie School of Business at Simon Fraser University. She completed her Doctor of Philosophy in Commerce in the Department of Management and International Business at The University of Auckland Business School in Aotearoa-New Zealand. Dara's doctoral research explored Coast Salish economy of affection with a focus on Coast Salish philosophy of freedom, unfreedom, wealth and reciprocity. Economic unfreedom emerged with introduction of the Potlatch Ban across Canada, and its residual impacts are prevalent today reflected in an aspect of the research findings that honour Xá:m! Crying, weeping—the affective expression of grieving that shapes how the Coast Salish wisdom keepers in this research talk about gatherings. Economic freedom from within Coast Salish worldview is inherently spiritual by virtue of the interrelated nature of exchange between Xá:ls, the Creator, Sólh Téméxw, the river environment, and Xwélmexw, the river people. She conducted this research using research methodology emerging from Coast Salish philosophy, protocols and worldview. Dara completed a Master of Commerce at The University of Auckland Business School. Her research thesis was entitled, "Ngā Kete e Toru o te Wānanga: Exploring Feminine Ancestral Leadership with Māori Business Leaders". She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from the University of British Columbia (UBC). In addition to her studies, Dara was a Researcher with the Mira Szászy Research Centre for Māori and Pacific Economic Development at The University of Auckland Business School. We had to scramble to find a way to get him back home Sunday afternoon for Monday morning school. It's been a very long day as we record this. Life will get in the way of things and when it does we just need to make the best of the situation. Later we are joined by Sam Thiara. Through his tireless work, Sam continues to be committed to the betterment of communities as a speaker, educator and storyteller. In 2016, Sam received the Governor General's Sovereign's Volunteer Medal as a past recipient of the Governor General's Caring Canadian Award. Also, in 2012 he received the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal and the Rick Hansen Difference Maker medallion. Over the last 20 years, he has helped and supported 45+ not-for-profit organizations from establishing a strategic vision to engaging stakeholders to rolling up his sleeves and doing whatever work is needed. As a community activator, his passion is to inspire and motivate others in their personal and professional development through his many adventures and reflections on life's journey. It is about helping people establish and build their personal autobiography through storytelling. As a writer and blogger, Sam published his book, Personal Storytelling: Discover the Extraordinary in the Ordinary to help others share their stories. His reflections on life help others vision and build their stories. Sam has mentored and coached hundreds of individuals in life and career. He is also an accomplished speaker and in 2011, spoke at TEDxSFU where he created the signature phrase, ‘Discovering the Extraordinary in the Ordinary'. The benefits of finding a mentor to help guide your path Mentorship is defined by Merriam Webster: the influence, guidance, or direction given by a mentor. In this episode, I am talking with Sam Thiara, a professional speaker, writer, professor, and mentor to thousands of people. We discuss first and foremost what is a mentor, the best way to find a mentor, and what to expect in a mentorship relationship. The Language of Mindfulness - A Podcast on Conscious Communication by Brett Hill
"Everyone's life is an autobiography…make yours worth reading" Meet the incredibly talented Sam Thiara. In this conversation, you'll hear how he has managed to transform himself from a person who is focused on achieving success to someone who inspires others through his storytelling, guidance, and insights into human nature. That transformation occurred, "the moment I stopped thinking about what I'm doing, and focused on who I am." And that my friends, is the Langauge of Mindfulness. Sam is not an actual monk, but his clients treat him as a sage. In this conversation, he relates how he's a "difficult monk" because he doesn't tell his clients the answers to life problems, but rather helps them explore who they are, so they arrive at answers themselves. Inspirational Speaker, Educator, Writer and self proclaimed ‘Do-Gooder', Sam Thiara joins the show today to discuss Sam's journey to becoming the ‘difficult monk' who has helped many people change their view of the world. Together, they discuss why obstacles are the necessary bricks on the road to success, why the more difficult the struggle, the sweeter the prize is and how even though you cannot control every situation, you can control how you react to it. KEY TAKEAWAYS The person who needs help, has the answers within them, they just need to be unlocked. Having the person reflect, ask questions and understand what matters to them in life will help them seek out their purpose. If it is easy and straightforward, it is probably not meant for you. The pain that you go through provides the pleasure at the end. The more difficult the struggle, the sweeter the prize. Obstacles are the necessary bricks on the road to success. Never fear the obstacles, embrace them because they are part of the journey. Realise that those obstacles are placed there for a reason to help you accomplish and achieve where we need to go. The world is very complicated and diverse, the more you focus on trying to change the world, the more frustrated you will become. By supporting others and changing their view of the world, you have changed the world in essence. From the moment you wake up to the moment you go to bed, you have a choice to make. Choose to add richness to your day and to your life. At the end of it all, at least you can say that you had some engaging experiences in your life that you truly enjoyed. As opposed to dwelling on the challenges you faced. Everyone will face challenges in their life. It is how you approach the challenge that matters. Understand that you are building resilience and this is something you have to face to get to the other side. You may not be able to control the situation, but you can control how you react to it. BEST MOMENTS “I am the difficult monk” “By leaving, I control my uncertainty, they don't.” “From great darkness comes great light.” “I said to myself, I am going to be open to this experience and I am going to embrace the opportunity, but what am I going to learn as a result of this?” ABOUT THE GUEST Sam Thiara: Speaker, Educator, Coach, Writer and Community-Do-Gooder “I am an individual who is a speaker, storyteller, author, coach, mentor, entrepreneur, educator and dedicated to community development. There are five areas that I identify as my foundation: Servant Leadership; Story Sharing; Activator and Igniter; Champion and Enabler; and Community Do-Gooder. My passion is to help individuals, groups and organizations. This also extends to the community where I enjoy and participate in community development and engagement where I have mentored/coached , hundreds of individuals and worked with 45+ non-profits over the last 25 years.I have spent the last 17+ years at the Beedie School of Business as a lecturer, administrator and on the Alumni Association Board. For the last 20+ years, I have been involved with helping people build on their autobiographies. This has become the foundation for the building of GradusOne (which recently merged with League of Innovators), an organization to help high school/post secondary/recent graduates in their career journey. Storytelling is a cornerstone of my background. Whether as an author or speaking at a conference, I have had a very rich reflective life and enjoy sharing my experiences. I am called upon by organizations and schools to do keynotes, workshops or panel facilitation. This exposure has enabled me to speak regionally, nationally and internationally. This week's episode is for all the strong women out there, who struggle with balancing their tactical professional and caring compassionate self. I know this is an internal conflict that I deal with regularly as an entrepreneur in a care-giving and creative sector. How can I highlight my expertise, intelligence, and strength without losing the softer side of myself? This struggle is particularly evident in negotiations, where we are required to bargain for something we want, such as a promotion, raise, or new opportunity. Women are typically socialized to step back, give in, and avoid conflict. So, how do you harness your inner shark without losing yourself? This week's guest is Alexandra Kutilin, a full-time MBA student at Simon Fraser University's Beedie School of Business. Alex is passionate about career mentorship, professional development, and entrepreneurship for women, topics that she regularly explores on her blog, professionalwomanblog.com. As an ambitious young career woman, she is also very active on campus. She is currently the President of the Graduate Women's Council, Student Ambassador, Mentors in Business participant, and has been a competitor in the 2019 BC MBA Games and 2020 National MBA Games, just to name a few of her many pursuits.

Ep 266 Guest: Mark Selman Indigenous Business In his book “Resource Rulers,” Bill Gallagher points out that the key to Canada’s economic future is in the hands of indigenous organizations and individuals. He goes onto say that opportunities are boundless for anyone who chooses to engage with First Nations businesspeople, community leaders and governments. Like all business relationships, the dynamics and the particulars of how to succeed are wrapped up in the intricate web of human relationships – relationships that take into account the culture, the rules and regulations, and the meeting of minds in the pursuit of a common objective. We are on new ground in Canada. Moving forward, First Nations and non-indigenous organizations will be working together to develop resources and capitalize on opportunities in a manner that will bring employment, revenue and prosperity to territories that have languished in poverty under the Indian Act. How then do we move forward? What are the business and cultural first-through 100 steps that need to be realized to ensure success? These are the questions being asked by everyone in business, be they First Nations or not. We invited Mark Selman, the founding director of the Executive MBA program in Indigenous Business and Leadership, Beedie School of Business, to join us for a Conversation That Matters about the wealth of potential in doing business as or with indigenous organizations and individuals. Conversations That Matter is a partner program for the Center for Dialogue at Simon Fraser University. This week, Ken gets a “taste” of social innovation at Simon Fraser University’s RADIUS incubator, speaking with co-director Shawn Smith and social entrepreneur Dylan Jones about their work. We learn how innovation requires bureaucratic flexibility, and Ken winds up at a loss for words with his mouth full of crickets! For decades now, higher education has embraced the entrepreneurial incubator to promote the commercialization of software developers and research breakthroughs in engineering, chemistry and medicine. (10K covered the movement broadly in this episode on “Campus Incubators and Accelerators” https://youtu.be/kwMooswS_C8, and visited the University of Waterloo’s “Velocity Garage” https://youtu.be/lj1AnCfYRMk). But in recent years, a wave of incubators has begun appearing to support social enterprises, launched by a new generation of altruistic entrepreneurs and “changemakers,” focused on the so-called “triple bottom line.” SFU’s Beedie School of Business established the RADIUS social innovation hub in 2013. (The name is an acronym for “Radical Ideas Useful to Society.”) Every year, RADIUS Fellows hosts emerging leaders in the social economy, and RADIUS ChangeLabs deliver extracurricular activities to SFU students. RADIUS’s Local Economic Development Lab (LEDlab) is working in Vancouver’s downtown eastside to build a more dynamic and inclusive economy (www.LEDLab.ca). They helped turn an informal group of wastepickers and recyclers into The Binners Project, with its own brand, marketing, and business model for R&D, cartsharing, and event services. (Learn more at www.binnersproject.org). RADIUS Ventures delivers incubation support to startups at the business model validation stage, and acceleration support to growth-ready companies ready to attract venture capital. These social-purpose companies have potentially profitable business models, but also aim to improve society by addressing environmental sustainability, homelessness, and other social challenges. RADIUS “co-entrepreneurs” with the ventures, going deep and ensuring they provide a meaningful change in trajectory for the entrepreneur and the company. One RADIUS venture was Zero Waste Market, Canada’s first package-free, zero-waste grocery store. (They changed their name literally days after this episode was completed, to Nada Grocery. Learn more at www.nadagrocery.com). Another great example of a social enterprise incubated at RADIUS is Coast Protein, a sustainable energy bar and protein powder company (see www.coastprotein.com). Their products are all-natural, with no artificial sweeteners or preservatives, and very few ingredients – primarily Canadian-farmed cricket flour. Cricket protein is far more sustainable and nutritious than beef or chicken, explains CEO Ryan Jones: per pound of protein, cows take 13x more land, produce 100x more greenhouse gases, and require 2,000x more water. And instead of 30% protein by volume, crickets are 65% protein, while also being high in iron, calcium, and B12 – an essential vitamin often missing in vegetarian diets. It’s still “the wild west of crickets right now,” Ryan explains, and most of Coast Protein’s marketing budget goes to consumer education. People don’t realize that the insect protein market is already about $200 million annually in North America, and expected to grow to about $1.5 billion by 2023. Or that crickets taste like “burnt roasted almonds with a hint of roasted mushroom.” Shawn observes that innovation can sometimes be challenging within a bureaucratic environment like a major public university. Entrepreneurs need to respect boundaries and structures, while remaining adaptive and responsive in an emergent space. RADIUS functions like a “skunkworks” at SFU, where risks can be taken, failures go quietly, and lessons can be learned. Academic innovators need their “pockets of innovation” to be protected from needless bureaucracy, and depend on “bridging innovators” in a wide range of departments, particularly in finance, to make their innovation work possible. Shawn emphasizes that SFU has a lot of these people, but that “they don’t always get the recognition they deserve.” On the upside, though, a university setting provides a wealth of expertise and cutting-edge researchers in a wide range of disciplines, and an endless supply of enthusiastic students who deeply care about social issues and want to make the world a better place. Social incubators like RADIUS need to bring people together from disparate perspectives, to “bite off problems that people haven’t quite figured out yet,” and universities are an ideal setting in which to do that. Shawn Smith is Director of Social Innovation at Simon Fraser University, co-founder and co-director of RADIUS, and an adjunct professor in the Beedie School of Business. He earned an MBA in social entrepreneurship from the University of Oxford in 2010, and has spent 12 years working in social impact organizations, including Impacto Quito, Global Agents for Change, and Education Generation. Chapter 1
As we've been hearing, developers were hoping for more incentives to build rental housing in this year's provincial budget. Concerns are being raised by groups like the Urban Development Institute that if the supply of homes for purchase or rental doesn't increase, demand will push prices up again. So should the government be doing more? Guest: Andrey Pavlov Professor of Finance at the Beedie School of Business at Simon Fraser University
Beedie School of Business professor Andrey Pavlov and lawyer Wes Mussio join host Stuart McNish to discuss the new British Columbia real estate speculation and vacancy tax.
The Vanderbilt Business Executive MBA program offers two tracks, Executive Edge and Global Immersion. Students in the Global Immersion track spend their second year learning alongside an international cohort of approximately 60 working professionals from four prestigious business schools, including Vanderbilt Business. Global Immersion students participate in four international residencies that last for nine days each, starting in Canada at the Beedie School of Business at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, British Columbia. Marketing Director Amy Katz sat down with Executive MBA student Megan Flynn after the Vancouver residency to get her initial thoughts. They discussed working on international teams, the importance of immersive experiences during business school, and more.
Ep 200 Andrey Pavlov Vancouver’s Out of Control Commercial Real Estate Market Walk down Vancouver’s Robson Street these days and you’ll see store after store papered over. The businesses that used to occupy the spaces are empty; the shops have “For Lease” signs on them. Those businesses shut down because the cost of rent has skyrocketed in harmony with the skyrocketing value and subsequently the skyrocketing property taxes of commercial real estate – a market that was ignited when the Provincial Government introduced the “Foreign Buyers Tax” on residential properties. To people looking to invest in Vancouver Real Estate, the "go home" tax didn’t make them walk away from owning land in Greater Vancouver; they merely shifted their focus. They were able to do this because the Province’s publicity infused, vote getting campaign designed to cool the housing market didn’t include a “stay out of BC” clause on commercial real estate. There are no school taxes, no empty home taxes, no foreign owner taxes on commercial and industrial real estate. Human beings did what they always do, they simply adapted to government policies and found ways around the rules in an effort to meet their own needs. In doing so they are driving up commercial property values, which in turn drive up rental rates and property taxes. Tenants are not only seeing rising rental rates, they are also responsible to pay the increased property taxes which in turn are driving many independent businesses out of business. The only companies that can afford the rent are national and international chains which charge more for their goods in Vancouver than in any other North American city. Along the way, the very soul of Vancouver’s retail market is disappearing along with thousands of jobs. We invited Andrey Pavlov, a Finance Professor at the Beedie School of Business to join us for a Conversation That Matters about the unintended consequences of a tax that forgot to look at the downstream effect it would have. Simon Fraser University’s Centre for Dialogue presents Conversations That Matter. Join veteran Broadcaster Stuart McNish each week for an important and engaging Conversation about the issues shaping our future.
