Episode Intro:Dimple Dhabalia has woven both her own story and that of others she has worked with into a phenomenal book, Tell Me My Story: Challenging the Narrative of Service Before Self; a book that digs deep into the realities that so many of us who provide service to others (because “caring for others in inherent to who we are, and to do anything different would leave us feeling unfulfilled and restless”) experience. Did you know that vicarious trauma can result from repeated exposure to other people's trauma and their stories of traumatic events, and that compassion fatigue can result from caring for those who are in significant pain and distress? It will likely come as no surprise that factors such as lack of transparency, decision making that doesn't consider workforce health, and perceptions of unfairness in the workplace can tip our organizations into what is being termed “organizational trauma”, all of which contribute to toxic work environments, burnout, disengagement, and sickness. If your role includes oversight of people, you could be having to deal with all these - both as the leader of the team you are responsible for - and personally. The good news is that we can reset and redesign once-traumatized cultures. Join us to learn more! About Dimple Dhabalia: Dimple D. Dhabalia is the founder of Roots in the Clouds and a human-centered leadership coach with over twenty years of government and public sector experience. Dimple partners with leaders across mission-driven sectors to address root issues and design inclusive, human-centered workplace cultures where emerging and seasoned leaders can learn how to preserve their own humanity as they work to preserve it for others. After almost two decades working on the front lines of the government and humanitarian sectors, Dimple had experienced vicarious trauma, compassion fatigue, moral injury, burnout, and anxiety. Like so many others, she worked in an organization that celebrated the resilience of the human spirit in the refugees and displaced persons they served, while failing to extend the same ethos to those working within their own organizations. Determined to educate and support heart-centered leaders, she developed and launched the Daring Leaders Project (DLP), the first mindfulness-based leadership development program of its kind within the agency. Her vision and leadership earned her Director's awards for Innovator of the Year and the Pillar of Leadership. In 2021, Dimple launched Roots in the Clouds with a personal mission of putting the “human” back into humanitarian and making service sustainable across mission-driven sectors. Today, Dimple's cutting-edge work explores the intersection of generational trauma and moral injury and supports a holistic approach to addressing individual and organizational trauma using principles of mindful performance, positive psychology, and human-centered leadership. Her new book, Tell Me My Story–Challenging the Narrative of Service Before Self [Ambika Media 2024], was recently excerpted in the Stanford Social Innovation Review, and her work has also been featured in Fast Company, CEO World Magazine, and the Federal News Network. Episode Intro:Most organizations are struggling with skill shortages and retention of talent. A lack of social connection at work is a widespread problem – made worse by remote and hybrid work. Did you know that: 57% of employees feel invisible at work. 20% of new hires will quit their job in the first 45 days. Many don't even show up on day one (particularly when the gap between offer and start date is long). According to a 2021 research study by McKinsey, a lack of connection and appreciation is the number one driver for attrition! In fact, people are nearly three times more likely to quit because they don't feel like they belong at work than because of poor compensation. It is Dr. Aliaa Remtilla's mission to help companies foster stronger, more authentic human connections amongst their employees. Many of our organizations are striving to improve diversity, equity, and inclusion in our workplaces. We can't achieve any of these without ensuring that these same work environments are felt to be psychologically safe, where candor and willingness to engage in “productive conflict” is part and parcel of learning from different points of view. According to Amy Edmondson in her excellent book The Fearless Organization: Creating Psychological Safety in the Workplace for Learning, Innovation, and Growth, “…in a psychologically safe workplace, people are not hindered by interpersonal fear. They feel willing and able to take the inherent interpersonal risks of candor. They fear holding back their full participation more than they fear sharing a potentially sensitive, threatening, or wrong idea.” As a leader, are you helping create a psychologically safe work environment by practicing attributes of “leader inclusiveness” - of being approachable and accessible, willing to acknowledge your fallibility, and proactively inviting input? Interested in learning more about the impact of shame and the inner critic, of the toxic shame spiral and our shadow, and of the negative impact that unexpressed anger can have on our health? In this podcast host Susan Ney and her guest Alister Moes explore the importance of anger management. The pain, sadness, hurt, fear, anxiety, shame, and often trauma, are what leads someone to react disproportionately to events. It is only when this is examined, with compassion and deep respect, that a person can alter their response to the triggers in their life and learn to relate to the emotional reactions that have led them astray. Alistair Moes and his team at Moose Anger Management have been humbled and inspired by the many people who have taken up the courage to take on this type of investigation. Hope you decide to join us! About the Guest – Alistair MoesAlistair is an international anger management expert and author. He has been working with people worldwide, and professionally since 1989 as an anger management specialist. He has been in private practice since 1995. He has worked with those who have enormous challenges in the world: from high-performance business leaders, gold medal-winning Olympic and professional athletes, to people that are close to homeless. Anger is indeed an equal opportunity emotion.Alistair has developed a manner of working, which is respectful, solution-focussed and based on both academic theory and extensive experience. This experience includes working with trauma, and historic abuse in a manner that honours each person and allows for deep healing. During the last twenty-eight years, he has worked with thousands of people who have made the call out of a desire to create change. Although he has facilitated court-ordered situations, he now works exclusively with self-referred clients, which includes those sent from the workplace, or strongly encouraged by a partner, or even unfortunately sometimes, a lawyer.Alistair's approach focuses on the gifts and potential of each person. In this manner “the good” that is present in an individual is attended to, as are the challenges that face each person. He also has extensive experience working with what is behind a person's anger. As he shares on his website, it is only when this is examined, with compassion and deep respect, that a person can alter their response to the triggers in their life and learn to relate to the emotional reactions that have led them astray. Alistair regularly presents workshops to diverse groups. He also provides counselling for parents with an extensive focus on Dads. I have been surprised to hear ageism being referred to by a growing number of my colleagues and their children. Ageism is defined as prejudice or discrimination on the grounds of a person's age – at any age. And like other forms of bias, ageism is not based in biology but is socially constructed. It starts in childhood. We pick up cues that then guide our feelings and behaviour towards people of different ages and towards ourselves. According to the Global Report on Ageism, “Ageism affects us throughout life and exists in our institutions, our relationships and ourselves”. The report suggests that implementing educational and intergenerational contact interventions can help. As can becoming more aware – how might you be unintentionally contributing to the problem? Nurtured by Nature with Host Susan Ney | HR52

In my last podcast, I talked about saying yes to opportunities; that these can take us to experiences and places we could not have ever imaged. Something we often don't say “yes” to, is taking breaks. I have been the person who, fully focused on what I was doing, didn't stop what I was doing to grab that morning coffee, or at times, lunch. As a leader I always encouraged that team members ensure that they take their breaks, but I often didn't model my words, and therefore, likely left team members confused at what I really meant. This alone wasn't healthy. Not taking much needed breaks for my mind to focus elsewhere wasn't healthy, and … although I guess I have always known it internally, getting outside to enjoy some truly fresh air, also wasn't healthy. And may explain why I was frequently going home so exhausted. I just finished reading the book The Nature Fix: Why Nature Makes Us Happier, Healthier, and More Creative, by Florence Williams. I felt it important to share some of what I learned. I know that I always feel better when I have taken a few moments to step outside, to breathe fresh air, especially when this involves even a small walk. It was interesting to learn that there has been significant research conducted on the very positive benefits to our health – both physical and psychological. So, today's podcast is about just that. It will hopefully encourage you to change any bad habits that you might be currently engaged in…. Hope you will join me! About the Host: Susan has worked with people all her life. I met Brian when he was working as the Business Manager for the West Vancouver Municipal Employees Union. I was working as the Director of Human Resources and Payroll Services with the District of West Vancouver. We both eventually moved on from those positions. Brian, to work with the BCGEU – the BC Government and Services Employees Union - as, amongst other responsibilities, their pension expert. Brian recently retired from, what ended up being over ten years with the BCGEU, building expertise on the public sector pension plans in BC. He sat on pension boards, assisted with a myriad of questions and is probably one of the most knowledgeable individuals around when it comes to this stuff. Brian joins us on today's podcast to share some of this knowledge and to address questions that we have both been asked in our respective positions over the years. And, he asked me to stress this is a general overview as plans and their specific details and information including design details will vary and the pension plans themselves should be relied upon for the specifics. The websites for the specific pension plans have been included below. *EDIT NOTE: The new flat accrual rate on the MPP. is not 1.85% (which was the PSPP number before moving to 1.95% Jan 1 this year). I am not going to bore you with all the statistics on the importance of fun and play in our work environments. I would be just telling you the obvious. I believe these would help with the engagement (or disengagement) dilemma and create a much-needed spark our organizations desperately need right now. When I reflect over the years and my employment at the various organizations I have worked within, what I've cherished most - the memories that bring a lovely feeling of warmth within me - are the moments of fun. Although I worked hard and it wasn't always easy, it is the times of play and laughter that I continue to cherish. Now, given that much of my career involved working in the public sector, expenditure of public funds in play activities was certainly questioned. Working towards attainment of exotic prizes and retreats at expensive spas were never going to be part of anything that could be considered; activities often available to private sector firms just weren't doable. This fueled the creativity button. Therefore, what could we do to bring fun and play to work without much, if any cost? And, for our listeners working for non-profits, for those of you working for small companies and for you entrepreneurs, hopefully you will gain some ideas that might work for you. These have been quite structured. My personal experiences have been with the more laissez-faire ones and those that just simply came about because... well they just seemed meant to. In this era of so much brain drain, engaging that wisdom and experience as one way to pay-it-forward is something that we are certainly encouraging. And the reverse works. I would cherish the opportunity to be mentored in the areas I struggle... technology perhaps... by those the skills come to more naturally–the generations following behind me in our work worlds. About the Guest – Melissa DeallyMelissa is an Integrative Health Practitioner, Registered Health Coach, Speaker, and host of her podcast Don't Wait for Your Wake Up Call and her YouTube channel Your Guided Health Journey. Melissa works with her clients to better understand what might be creating health challenges. She helps get to the cause of the health issue and then creates a personalized program - a guided journey back to a vibrant, thriving, perfectly balanced state of wellbeing, mind, body, and soul – an attainable goal well worth every effort to achieve. As Melissa notes, this elemental wellbeing is our birthright, deeply foundational to everything we could ever want in life, the solution to most if not all of the problems we are experiencing on every level. She asks, “Do you keep getting told nothing is wrong with you or that they don't know what is wrong with you?” or are you “Tired of the only option being offered is a drug that you have to take for the rest of your life?”. She shares “Well that was me….my migraines had become so frequent, and all my doctor offered was more drugs. I wanted to know WHY my migraines were suddenly more frequent. When I turned to holistic health, I was able to do a lab test that showed my hormones out of balance. When I fixed that, my migraines went away.” And, “When my 6-year-old daughter got tummy aches every day, I was told ‘all little girls get tummy aches, she'll grow out of it' except there was no answer as to how long that would take. Again, I turned to functional medicine labs, and learned she was intolerant to gluten and dairy, so we removed those and voila! The tummy aches were gone!”Melissa's experiences taught her that there are often answers that traditionalmedicine doesn't provide. There are other solutions, and now, as an integrativehealth practitioner, she helps many people who are struggling and looking foranother way. Some of the common challenges she can help with are:➤ Getting to the root cause of your health issues➤ Removing toxicities➤ Boosting deficiencies to help your body come back into balance so that it canheal itself, and give you newfound energy, and a renewed joy of life. She uses functional medicine labs that get mailed to your home and help"see" what is going on inside your body and then provides a personalwellness protocol to guide your healing journey. We haven't been taught the importance of managing stress, optimizing sleep, orwhat we put in our mouths.AND - we have a food industry that doesn't care about our health and a healthindustry that doesn't care about our...

Charlene Wright. A chalk board artist. A painter. A professional clown. A facilitator, coach, and trainer. She is an individual who calls herself a creativepreneur. She helps others honour all of who they are – especially and including their creative side, as they transition – from job loss, from employment to entrepreneurship, from shifting into retirement, from change. In my conversation with Charlene, she noted that people only really get ready for a career transition when they have to and thus find the process something that really shakes them to their core. And that we need to get better at self-managing our careers. Charlene founded SmART Career Solutions (SCS) to recognize and celebrate that a significant number of professionals don't fit into a traditional service model and that NOT ALL PROFESSIONALS wear a suit or would consider themselves an “average” job seeker. She asks “Are you an out-of-work creative professional that wants a new JOB or wants to build a creative business or both? Do you leverage your creative and artistic skills to your advantage? Are you missing out on better opportunities? Have you married the elements of ‘being creative', finding meaningful work and generating money?” She offers Job Search Online courses and career coaching if you are ready to leverage your superpower … or at least be willing to be held accountable! Negative self-talk. I suspect you are like me, especially when it comes to how we feel we are being perceived by our worlds. We all pick up on body language, changes in vocal tone, and other indicators that an individual's words, as one example, may not be an accurate reflection of what they are truly feeling. And… yes, this provides a wonderful playground for those negative voices inside of us. Today we are going to talk about that negative chatter inside our heads. Some call it our gremlins. It's the stuff that holds us back, erodes our self-confidence and creates havoc in our ability to present as our very best. And I have not yet met anyone who doesn't struggle with it. In the podcast we explore identification of those gremlins and tools to use to enable a refocus when they are having their fun with us. Hope you will join me! Meet Monique Liddle. She is the Manager of Operations at the City of North Vancouver Library. It is a place she has called “home” for over a decade and not a place that she had originally envisioned working when she graduated from the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) with her certification in Interior Design Management. Our libraries are so much more than a repository of books and information. Monique was able to use the skills and expertise she had built over the years to secure a similar and yet very different type of position within her local library. That was many years ago now. Monique has continued to grow and thrive with the library. And yes, she has even been able to use her training in interior design! Learn more about what the library can do for you – including as a potential career path. About the Guest – Monique Liddle Monique graduated from the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) with certification in Interior Design Management. As it was difficult to find employment in that discipline right out of school, she continued working in the food service industry, starting as an Assistant Front-End Supervisor with Extra Foods, then becoming the Front-End Assistant Manager with Thrifty Foods. When a Customer Service Supervisor position came available at her local library, she jumped at the opportunity to apply her skills differently. It was a good move for her. In the ensuing years she has been promoted to Head of Branch Operations and Customer Service and then to the Manager of Operations. She is now responsible for a large scope of responsibilities that include effective customer service delivery across all departments, promotion and retailing, facility oversight, employee engagement, circulation, cash handling, and implementing new systems for retail and circulation. It is easy to see why her previous customer service and people-oversight expertise was recognized when Monique made the decision to apply to the library. It has and continues to be a great career for her. She loves her work, and it shows! Stephen Hammond, lawyer turned professional speaker, helps his clients avoid the landmines that are getting so many people and workplaces in trouble. For 27 years Stephen has educated thousands of Canadians about the importance of preventing and responding to all the inappropriate stuff that goes on at work; in particular, harassment, bullying and discrimination. Despite the serious nature of the issues, Stephen is known for his humour, wit, and discussing issues that are current and relevant. Most importantly, people leave his sessions feeling more confident to prevent and address inappropriate workplace behaviour.Stephen shares the importance of dealing quickly with matters that can quickly erupt into more serious situations especially when these appear to violate individual's ability to work in a respectful work environment or are an infringement on any of the protections provided under human rights and charter of freedom legislation. His stories are real, taken from actual cases. His lessons, using his recent book The New Norm: A manager's guide to improving workplace behaviour … and keeping out of legal hot water are practical, outlined as: 1) A big mistake; 2) Important tip; 3) Quiz on the key points; and 4) relevant Canadian legal cases on “the big mistake”. Stephen makes a subject that could be overwhelming and mired in legalese approachable and understandable as evidenced in his keynotes “It's Official – Everything is Offensive” and “Creating Your New Norm at Work”. Hope you will join us for lots of nuggets of great learning that could help keep you and your organization contributing to the “wow” organizations – those great ones that we love working for and with. About the Guest – Stephen HammondStephen Hammond is an author, speaker, trainer, and consultant in the field of the weird things people do at work that get them into trouble. In this week's podcast we talk about the importance of effective communication and what Susan Scott in her excellent book Fierce Conversations: Achieving Success at Work & in Life, One Conversation at a Time, calls, “fierce conversations”. Overall, most of us could be much better communicators. Too frequently we attempt to express ourselves and find that what we had hoped to convey has been received in a manner that we had not intended or expected. With our incresased use of emails, texts, tweets and the like, I see this getting worse, not better over time.Scott asserts that the next frontier of exponential growth, the place you will find a new and sustainable competitive edge, lies in the area of human connectivity – internally with staff and externally with your marketplace. This assertion is supported by leading edge research groups such as McKinsey & Company where words like heighted connectivity, more purposeful, more human, and emphasis on employees' need for affirmation, social chohesion, purpose and meaning are being increasingly used - all postive impacts of deep dialogue and effective communication. We have an opportunity to do things differently as we begin to emerge from the realities of the pandemic. According to Scott, “Conversation = Relationship”. Make your conversations truly great ones! Tips and insights in today's podcast. Hope you will join me! About the Host: Susan has worked with people all her life. Malcolm White lives his passion through his work. He has always known that he loved working on the water. He was fascinated by the tugboats and the barges they were towing – the ones he would watch while working as a fishing guide in Campbell River, British Columbia. So, he attained his Deck Hand certification and the requisite sea hours. And over a career of, now forty years, he continued to take courses, build continued experience on the ocean, and for many years now, has been master of his tug, as the Captain. Malcolm shares his journey with us, including some very frightening and exhilarating experiences, a little about the tugboats used in this exciting work, and some tips if this is a career that might be of interest to you or someone you know. Ever wonder what it is like to assist those big freighters into dock? Hope you will join us! About the Guest – Malcolm White Malcolm is the captain of the one of the big tugs we see working in the Vancouver harbour. They are called yarding tugs. They guide the huge freighters and cargo ships to dock or moor at our local mooring lots, terminals, and refineries in the lower mainland. His responsibilities also involve receiving, towing, and landing huge barges. It is interesting and difficult work. Over the years, Malcolm has transitioned from working as a fishing guide in Campbell River, on Vancouver Island, to attaining both the sea hours and relevant certifications to first become a deck hand, and eventually to attaining the title and responsibilities of tugboat captain. It has been a truly wonderful career for him, full of exciting experiences and memories. One he will miss when he decides to retire. In the meantime, he is enjoying working with his new baby – yes, a tugboat – and it's quiet! Conflict and Conflict Resolution with Host Susan Ney | HR26

I don't think it would be much of a stretch to assume that, at some point in our careers we have all been party to, or impacted by, conflict-laden situations: individuals not getting along, someone not pulling their weight, colleagues not showing up on time or at all, poor behaviour, rules not followed, as only some examples. All too often, these situations get tolerated, ignored, excused, and otherwise not dealt with. I have been in situations that allowed me to address such issues, in others where I have been stymied in doing so. I have also been the avoider and the leader who didn't act in a timely manner. I know that NOT dealing with situations that create conflict is NOT a good thing. I also know that dealing with conflict is one of the toughest responsibilities that individuals who oversee people face. We don't teach these skills well. Many of us don't learn effective conflict resolution in our formative years. This spills over into our work environments. The outcome is not good. Gary Harper in his excellent book The Joy of Conflict Resolution: Transforming Victims, Villains and Heroes in the Workplace and at Home encourages a different approach. I was lucky enough to learn from Gary. He reminds us that “every conflict provides the opportunity for learning, growth and enhanced relationships”. Yes - the opportunity. I just re-read The Joy of Conflict Resolution. I would like to take today's podcast to share some of Gary's insights – because I know they work. A Career of Building Equity and Justice | HR25

When we are able to fulfill our life's purpose, in this case helping ensure that people's voices were heard, inequities were addressed and choice was actioned, as part of the responsibilities of what we are paid to do, we tend to infuse really positive stuff onto those we work with. I was one of the lucky ones provided the opportunity at an early point in my own career to work with such an individual – Bill Howes. Bill is someone who through every action and every word he spoke, exuded leadership, alignment with core values and passion for what he did. He knew what he was good at. He built leaders along the way. And he has continued to make a positive difference in his retirement activities. Bill spent most of his career working for and with unions, as a paid employee within those organizations. It might be something for you to consider too. Our unions need great leaders too. Hope you will join us! About the Guest: Bill Howes is a native Torontonian. He went to school in Vaughan Road Collegiate Institute, and at nineteen he started working at Northern Electric in Bramalea, Ontario. Bill got involved with organizing for the United Electrical Workers while working at that plant. Shortly after, he moved into the office part of Northern Electric, which had a company association. He became active and one of the leaders of a strike by Northern Electric office workers in 1966, the first successful strike ever at Northern. Coming out of the strike, the association members realized they needed a legitimate union, and Howes was on the committee that interviewed all of the unions with a connection to telecom. They chose the United Auto Workers (UAW). Bill became involved in organizing with the UAW and was active in that local for several years. Bill left Northern in 1972 and went to work with the Canadian Labour Congress (the umbrella organization for many of Canada's unions) to organize white-collar workers. He organized the first chapter of the Association of Commercial and Technical Employees (ACTE). Knowing his background in organizing telecom, the Communications Workers of Canada (CWC) asked that Bill be put on loan from the CLC for its organizing drive. The CWC eventually hired him, making him National Representative responsible for organizing in Ontario in 1974. Bill focused on a variety of organizing campaigns through his years with the CWC, primarily with office, technical and operator units across the nation. He also taught seminars on organizing. In 1989 he left the organization which, through several amalgamations over the years had now become the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers' Union, to accept the position of Executive Assistant to the President of the Toronto and York Region Labour Council and the responsibility of being the labour link to social justice movements. Bill left the Labour Council in 2000 to establish Organizing Resources, providing consulting services to unions conducing organizing campaigns. In his “retirement” he also co-founded Not Just Tourists and has worked tirelessly on behalf of feral cats in the Greater Toronto Area – more on these in the podcast! *With appreciation to Joan Roberts and her overview of Bill in her excellent book Cracked: How Telephone Operators Took on Canada's Largest Corporation… and Won!If you wish to contact Bill, he can be reached at bill.howes43@gmail.comThe website for the Toronto and Yukon Region Labour Council is Toronto & York Region Labour CouncilThe book referred to in the podcast is Cracked: How Telephone Operators Took on Canada's Largest Corporation… and Won! by author Joan RobertsAbout the Host: Susan has worked with people all her life. Paul Moffatt made a decision, late in his career, to become a bus driver. He applied to the local transit authority, studied for and attained his Class 2 drivers license. He has discovered that, of all the different jobs he has worked at through his career, being a bus driver is the absolute best. As a people person, Paul has found his niche. We are going to explore the process Paul went through to make this decision, why he loves the job so intensely, and where else this has taken him to in the latter years of his career. About the Guest – Paul Moffatt Paul worked most of his career as management in the food industry in the United States. He also sold cars for many years (GM Sales master and Salesman) and developed a multi-million-dollar commercial real estate. Having graduated from West Vancouver Secondary School in the lower mainland of British Columbia, he decided to return to Canada after many years of being away. A move to Victoria led him to a decision to apply his people skills differently. Paul researched, applied, attained his Class 2 driver's license, and became a bus driver for BC Transit.
