In the home environment for sure, but also when we enter and go through the educational system.  In Claim Your Dream Life,  Dawn explains how we have BIG DREAMS when we are children, believing we can be and do anything we want.  Then we become conditioned over time to temper our dreams and be "realistic".  By they time we reach adulthood, sadly just earning a steady paycheck is often our new “Dream”.  What can we do?  Dawn believes the answer lies in revamping the current system as our Industrial Era educational system's one-size-fits-all approach often leaves students disconnected with each other, bored and disinterested in learning. Dawn shares information and data from the US, but the trend she discusses isn't limited to that country.  There's a good reason we see so much labor unrest, with union workers striking, non-union workers organizing and pretty much all workers falling behind economically.Dawn examines the growth of CEO pay where compensation of the top CEOs has increased 1,322.2% from 1978 to 2020. Top CEO compensation grew roughly 60% faster than stock market growth during the same period and far exceeded the 18.0% growth in a typical worker's pay.  During the pandemic the dramatic increase in CEO compensation was obscene. While millions were out of work, CEOs' pay shot up 18.9% in 1 year. The CEO-to-worker compensation ratio was 21-to-1 in 1965. It peaked at 366-to-1 in 2000. In 2020 the ratio was 351-to-1. The makeup of CEO compensation is shifting away from stock options, to stock awards. Vested stock awards and exercised stock options totaled $20.1 million in 2020 and accounted for 83.1% of CEO pay.Corporate boards running America's largest public firms are giving top executives outsize compensation packages that have grown much faster than the stock market, typical workers salaries, college graduates, and even the top 0.1%.   What can be done?Listen and discover:1. Next, in Bait & Switch: The (Futile) Pursuit of the American Dream Barbara Ehrenreich goes undercover as a job seeker to highlight the professional people (like us!) who did  everything right—we got our college degrees, developed marketable skills, and built up impressive résumés—yet we have become repeatedly vulnerable to financial devastation, and not simply due to the vagaries of the business cycle. The social compact has changed, and yet many people are still playing by the old rules... Finally, for or over twenty-five years, Your Money or Your Life has been considered THE go-to book for taking back your life by changing your relationship with money. Do you want to know the secret to happiness and success? It may surprise you to know that emotional intelligence (EI) is key! "Emotional intelligence is the ability to monitor one's own and other people's emotions, to discriminate between different emotions and label them appropriately, and to use emotional information to guide thinking and behavior."In the Science of Happiness and in Volume Two, we're focusing on what we can do to improve our happiness as we relate to other human beings in community. For over eight decades, the Harvard Study of Adult Development has been tracking the same individuals and their families, asking thousands of questions and taking hundreds of measurements from brain scans to blood work, with the goal of discovering what really makes for a good life. Through all the years of studying these people, strong relationships have the biggest impact on physical health, mental health and longevity. In part seven, our big reveal is happy people nurture good relationships. Dr. Waldinger, who now runs the study, says that emotional intelligence and relationship acumen are bigger predictors of success than IQ. In this episode, you will learn the following:1. What is emotional intelligence and how can it be learned?2. How does emotional intelligence impact our ability to succeed in different areas of life?3. What are some practical tips for improving emotional intelligence? In this volume, Dr. Waldinger explains that emotional intelligence and relationship acumen are bigger predictors of success than IQ. Emotional intelligence helps us build stronger relationships, succeed at school or in the workplace, reduce stress, defuse conflicts and enhance satisfaction. Proficient social skills allow us to build meaningful relationships with others and develop a deeper understanding of ourselves. Some essential social skills are active listening, verbal and nonverbal communication, leadership and persuasiveness. Here are some tips on improving your social skills: ask open ended questions, use icebreakers, maintain good eye contact, express interest in others and ask them personal questions.Resources: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5981239/Support the show

Does Worrying about What Other People Think Make Us Happy?“When we asked, ‘What was your biggest regret?' a lot of people said, ‘I wish I hadn't spent so much time worrying about what other people think'" according to the Harvard Happiness Study.Fear is a primal emotion and goes to the heart of our survival drive in the physical world. Our survival as humans, as a tribal species, is dependent upon our being accepted by the tribe. If we got rejected by the tribe, historically it literally could mean death due to lose of protection and shelter. In the modern era, fear of societal rejection triggers our limbic or reptilian brain. Emotionally, from an evolutionary standpoint our limbic brain just can't handle rejection!  Yet, to live our best life we need to let go and overcome this primal instinct - this fear of rejection really does not serve us very well in our modern world!Episode References:Episode 65: Stepping Up and Stepping Out: How to Take that Leap of FaithEpisode 14: We Didn't Just Talk About Our Dream Retirement - We Went For it!Support the show

Does being self-absorbed make you happier?"People are happiest when they make investments in things that are beyond themselves."In the last four episodes of The Science of Happiness series (Volume 1), we focused on the science of happiness as it relates to creating purpose and deeper meaning in life. Volume 2 focuses on our fourth quarter theme of Community and Cultural Adaptation. The Harvard Study of Adult Development, which launched in 1938, is the longest scientific study of happiness ever conducted. It found that people are happiest when they make investments in things that are beyond themselves. Dr. Waldinger, who now runs the study,  recommends helping kids learn about the satisfaction of being interested in others and building great relationships. The key to success in building relationships is to listen. People who are self-absorbed tend to steer a conversation back to themselves even when it's not about them. Being a good listener means listening with all four senses and asking questions. So, if you want to be happy, make sure to invest in things that are beyond yourself. In this episode, you will learn the following:1. The Harvard Study of Adult Development, which launched in 1938, is the longest scientific study of happiness ever conducted.2.
