In this edition of RC spotlight we hear from Frederich Hayem (Fred), a relatively new runner who has achieved rapid success since taking up the sport just over a year ago. He is the perfect example of how good training and learning from your mistakes is the best way to improve as an athlete.  He joined our coaching program with the goal of running his first marathon and crushed it, running a 3:29. Despite some injury and setbacks, he has taken several minutes off of his already impressive half marathon PR and as he moves into a new age group, he is only continuing to get faster. Fred attributes much of his success to consistent strength training and sticking to a plan without stressing about hitting mileage or paces exactly. To learn more about Fred's story and growth as an athlete we'll chat about topics including: How Fred used his background in strength training to help his running performance Why consistency is king when it comes to improvement in running What it means to be a “smart runner” Why you should avoid focusing on perfection if you want to get faster Fred's future goals, including some big races in 2024 A lot of runners strive to get better quickly but Fred shows that you don't need to rush the training process in order to see great results. If you are new to running or have been training for a while and want to get better you're going to love this conversation. This week's show brought to you by: MAS Iron Outside of training deficiencies, low iron is one of the most common reasons for poor results during workouts and races.  Recent research indicates that almost 56% of male runners and 86% of female runners suffer from an iron deficiency that severely hampers performance. The problem with eating iron-rich foods or supplementing with traditional iron supplements is that iron is notoriously difficult for the body to absorb and utilize. In fact, only about 25% of dietary iron found in animal sources is absorbed while 17% or less of the iron from plant sources is absorbed. But MAS Iron has found a way to combat these absorption issues to ensure you can get the iron you need for health and performance. By combining the most efficiently absorbed form of elemental iron with clinically proven ingredients to aid in absorption, MAS Iron performs like no other iron product on the market. In fact, clinical research has shown the combination of ingredients in MAS Iron can quadruple absorption and increase bioavailability by 30%, all while reducing GI issues by 50%. Check out the research and the results for yourself at masedge.com/iron. Runnersconnect fans will automatically save 20% on any purchase. Movie: Slaughterhouse-Five The 1969 Kurt Vonnegut Masterpiece Vs. the 1972 Filmed AdaptationThe Margos continue “Banned Book Month” with one of the most controversial works by celebrated author Kurt Vonnegut, 1969's antiwar novel Slaughterhouse-Five: or The Children's Crusade: A Dirty Dance with Death. Vonnegut's fictional account of his real-life experience as a prisoner of war and the WW2 Dresden bombing was published at the height of the Viet Nam conflict and appreciated by millions who loved the science-fiction blend of sex, the futility of war, American hypocrisy, and the meaning of life. The lead character of Billy Pilgrim is “unstuck in time” as he moves from different events in life due to his traumatic war experiences. Captured by the Germans after the Battle of the Bulge, the weak Pilgrim and his cohorts are marched to Dresden during the waning days of WW2, not knowing that the allies were planning to bomb the open city that had approximately 25,000 citizens who were not in the military. By staying in a meat locker underground, he and a few others survive only to have to clean up what is left behind. When he returns home, he encounters aliens from Tralfamodore who bring him to their planet to study him. This is when he learns he can time jump and find out exactly when he will die. In the end, he finds that life has no meaning, and…so it goes. George Roy Hill (The Sting, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid) directs the filmed adaptation, which stars Michaels Sacks, Ron Liebman, and Valerie Perrine, which made the author very happy. Synopsis As Leipzig's chief provider of both sacred and secular music Johann Sebastian Bach probably gave a huge sigh of relief on today's date in 1733. The death of the Imperial Elector Friedrich Augustus the First of Saxony earlier that year had resulted in a four-month period of official mourning, which meant NO elaborate sacred music at Bach's Leipzig churches, and certainly no frivolous secular concerts with the Collegium Musicum, an orchestra of professionals and amateurs that Bach assembled periodically at Zimmermann's coffee house in that city. Finally, Frederich's successor said, “Enough was enough,” and this notice appeared in a Leipzig paper: “His Royal Highness and Electorial Grace, having given kind permission for the [resumption of] music, tomorrow, on June 17, a beginning will be made by Bach's Collegium Musicum at Zimmermann's Garden, at 4 o'clock in the afternoon, with a fine concert. The concerts will be weekly, with a new harpsichord, such as had not been heard there before, and lovers of music are expected to be present.” So it's not hard to imagine Bach at Zimmermann's giving the downbeat to put the new instrument through its paces in one of his own harpsichord concertos. It's another two-fer this time  as we cover the last two episodes of AMC's The  Walking Dead.  Basically covering the initial onslaught in our group's attempt to "deal" with Negan.  The action is spread out over two episodes and focuses heavily on Carol and her current state of mind.  Both are excellent episodes and go deeper than most.  We meet Paula, mostly in the most recent episode, played expertly by Alicia Witt who brings a stunning depth and coldness to her portrayal.  Packed with violence, but not in an empty, gung-ho way.  Each death is significant, and weighty and we watch as our "heroes" begin to make us forget just what that word means.  Let us know what you thought of the episodes of the show and of the podcast by writing to mail@z-realm.com or by posting a message on our Facebook page.Oh, and we kept calling him "Frederich" but it's really "Gregory"...sorry about that.
