“I want us to really love our country and not see it as the problem. Stop talking about sharks and spiders and snakes. Start talking about the beauty of a grassland.”  Bruce Pascoe and Bill Gammage need no introduction. Both have authored books that changed the conversation about pre-settlement history in Australia and speak to the importance of listening to First Nations wisdom: Bruce with his groundbreaking Dark Emu, which argued that Indigenous people did not follow a hunter-gatherer lifestyle at the time of colonisation, and Bill with his 2011 book The Biggest Estate on Earth: How Aborigines Made Australia, which explored how Aboriginal people have managed the land to their advantage for millennia.  Now, Bruce and Bill join forces to continue the conversation in Country: Future Fire, Future Farming, delving into the remarkable agricultural and land care practises of First Nations people. Country examines how, through complex seasonal burning programs, Aboriginal people managed the land to avoid the late season destructive bushfires we fear today.  Together they join writer Sophie Cunningham to discuss how employing Indigenous land management practises is critical to creating a more sustainable future for people and country.   The bookseller for this event was The Paperback Bookshop.  Featured music is ‘Red Orchard' by Justnormal, frumhere. For many years, news headlines have been punctuated with stories of coastal properties falling into the sea; and it's well known that Britain's low-lying parts of the East Coast are at risk. Now, the Environment Agency is giving its clearest warning yet: that some coastal communities will have to be moved, and land given up to the sea. Its Chief Executive, Sir James Bevan, has called it "the hardest of all inconvenient truths" and says "climate impacts will mean some coastal communities cannot stay where they are". The Scottish Government has said it wants at least half of all agricultural support payments for farming and crofting to be conditional by 2025 - meaning to get the money, you'll have to deliver things like biodiversity gain or reduced emissions. NFU Scotland has been holding a roadshow across the country over the last month gathering farmers' views; we find out how it's gone down. And a pilot grant scheme aimed at encouraging small scale food growers in Wales, has led the Welsh Government to take action. The pilot awarded grants of up to £5000 to fund equipment to grow food, on less than five hectares. We visit one of the participating farms. In this podcast AHDB's Derek Carless and Peter Shallcross a dairy and arable farmer in the South of Wiltshire speak to John Bates about how levy payers can access free support to help decision making in connection with the ending of the basic payment scheme in 2027. The rundown of payments starts its run down from December and farmers need to manage the transition the best they can. AHDB's job is to help levy payers navigate complicated issues and present evidence and facts for farmers and growers to consider and adopt, for their individual circumstances and their business needs. In this interview with Curt Yoose, an Agriculture instructor at Ridgewater College in Willmar, Minnesota, he discusses agricultural technology and education programs. He defines the field as “using technology to make producers, growers, farmers more productive, more efficient, and lessen their impact on the environment, using technology to do those things.” He explained that there are two types of technical applications in agriculture—one dealing with software and data components and another with hardware and electrical components. Not surprisingly, he says the skill in most demand is troubleshooting, requiring both soft skills and technical skills.

For some, the concept of hands-free farming is terrifying; for others, the prospect is game-changing and exciting. But, is fully autonomous farming really possible? In this episode we chat with Kit Franklin, senior lecturer in agricultural engineering at Harper Adams University in the UK, who in 2016 set out to prove an entire crop cycle could be done autonomously. The project was called Hands Free Hectare, which later expanded into Hands Free Farm after garnering worldwide attention and for producing what is believed to be the first crop to be planted, cultivated, and harvested - completely autonomously. While Kit started this farming experiment simply to prove robotic farming was possible, how transferable is his autonomous trial crop to the real world? And is it how we want to be farming our food in the future? In this episode, Kit discusses:The role autonomy can play in making small-scale farming viable and lowering chemical use.How media exposure of even a small scale project can change perceptions of agriculture and attract unlikely entrants to the industry. The key enablers required for autonomy to take off, and the business models that may bring it to scale. For more resources from this episode, visit our website.
