On this episode I'm joined by Gerry Leonard for a deep dive into Hinterland, the band he formed in the late 80s with Donal Coughlan, and the duo's 1990 album Kissing the Roof of Heaven. Both Coughlan and Leonard had been in a variety of Dublin bands during the 80s but it wasn't until they both moved to Copenhagen in 1986 that they got to know each other. Early in 1987 the duo returned to Dublin and formed Hinterland – Coughlan was principally responsible for the lyrics while both concentrated on melodies and arrangements. Demos were recorded for a second album but it wasn't to be. In the mid-90s Leonard headed for New York with $200 in his pocket and ended up working with Bowie. He's worked with Suzanne Vega and loads of others and we chat about all of that and more. Coughlan, who was diagnosed with MS in his early 20s, sadly passed away in 2016, he was only 54. Episode notes are here.

Gary Cooke talks to Dublin-born guitar legend Gerry Leonard: Pt2 by Senior Times
Once Gary Cooke's guitar teacher, Gerry Leonard is an Irish lead guitarist and solo artist, known for his harmonic and ambient guitar style and for his work with David Bowie. He has lived and worked in Dublin, Copenhagen, and Manhattan.
October marks a great time on the annual sports calendar. Pierce Turner and I begin this episode talking about castles and end it discussing Patsy Cline & Roy Orbison. But in between we do manage to touch on his career. He's been playing music since he was a kid in Ireland in the 60's. He couldn't help it; it was all around him. His mom had her own band and the family had their own music store. And as a 14 year old kid, he was in charge of inventory! He was even in a 60's Irish version of a boy band. But he wanted to start writing his own music, so he struck out on his own, which led him and a bandmate to fly to NYC with no plan; not even a place to stay when they landed! His first recordings in America almost ruined his career by attracting a bunch of weird Aleister Crowley fanatics! But he started writing music for modern dance and working with Philip Glass before starting a true solo career. His sound has shifted over the decades, including ditching the traditional band format and working only with string quartets. His new album features David Bowie guitarist Gerry Leonard and a rhythm section of Tony Shanahan from Patti Smith & Beck and Yuvel Lion from David Byrne. It's called Terrible Good, because that's exactly what it is. And Philip Glass returns! Check it out in the usual places. Check out Pierce's website, pierceturner.com for more info. “Oh, The Starlings', is the debut album from Irish duo Kieran Goss and Annie Kinsella. It was recorded in New York with eight time Grammy winning engineer and mixer Kevin Killen at the helm. “Oh, The Starlings' has been described by songwriter Rodney Crowell as: “So good, it's heartbreaking...the record itself feels like an old friend.” On today's episode, Kieran and Annie talk to me about their experience making the album with some celebrated American musicians and a few Irish ones including guitarists Gerry Leonard, John Doyle and our very own Declan Murphy. Welcome back to Albumtoalbum, the David Bowie albums podcast with me, Arsalan Mohammad. And it's a very exciting podcast indeed today as we welcome not one but two Bowie alumni, producer/musician Mark Plati and drummer Sterling Campbell, to talk about a new old classic lost collection of remakes, the legendary TOY. TOY was released last month as part of the Brilliant Adventures box set, which covers the 1992 – 2001 period, an era in which Sterling and Mark worked with Bowie, together or individually, on albums like Black Tie White Noise, Outside, Earthling, hours and TOY as well as some of the most high profile live shows of the era – the Glastonbury performance in 2000, the BBC Radio Theatre show of the same year and the subsequent TOY sessions, where Mark and Bowie selected a number of David's songs from the 1960s to remake and remodel with a full band. Strangely, from the perspective of 2021, when TOY was offered to Bowie's then-record label Virgin, it was met with some degree of perplexity, a distinct lack of energy and never got released, although the energy and positivity of those sessions led naturally onto 2001's magnificent Heathen. By all accounts, these were amazingly creative, enjoyable sessions, a fact that is audibly evident in the charismatic interpretations of the songs. Tunes that were barely heard by the record-buying public at the time, subsequently ignored by their creator for thirty years were now lovingly revisited by a band who knew just what to do with them. In part one of this conversation with Mark and Sterling, we begin by going back to New York in the late 70s and 1980s, rediscovering the music that shaped their lives and creative outlook. It's the stories of two future musicians growing up in the midst of a cultural new wave shaped by punk, hip hop, disco, techno - and Bowie. Fast forward to the 1990s and the pair fondly reminisce about their time in the studio working with David Bowie and his collaborators, including Brian Eno, Gail Ann Dorsey, Gerry Leonard and many others. The group dynamic was productive and creative – and hugely enjoyable. Sterling recalls Bowie's devotion to British contemporary comedy colouring the mood of sessions, with David frequently insisting on group breaks to watch videos of Alan Partridge and The Office. Mark affirms how, in the studio, Bowie would pounce on random ideas and accidents, a characteristic recalled by so many of his collaborators over the years. The pair also reflect on the shifts in pop culture and technology from the time of the Beatles to the present day as successive generations have accrued a shared pop culture history and debate how the pandemic might change things for the future.
Derek and Kieran are thrilled to be joined by Gerry Leonard. Gerry is a musician and producer who hails from Dublin. We discuss the music scene of the 80's in the fair city, moving to New York and ultimately recording and touring with David Bowie. Gerry's partnership with Bowie produced three studio albums (Next Day, Heathen and Reality). Gerry is an in-demand musician who's credits now also include Suzanne Vega, Rufus Wainwright, Laurie Anderson, Roger Waters and many others. Leonard heads up his own project as Spookyghost, he has recorded two solo albums. The first recording simply called “Spookyghost” His second, “The Light Machine” was described by David Bowie as “Quite the most beautiful and moving pieces of work I have possessed in a long time.” We were delighted Gerry took the time to chat to us. Let Christy Take It bring you Gerry Leonard. Thanks to Mark Cullen for editorial work.

The Total Tutor Neil Haley will interview Director/Producer Francis Whately of HBO's DAVID BOWIE: THE LAST FIVE YEARS. In January 2016, David Bowie died at the age of 69, just days after he released the critically acclaimed Blackstar, a haunting album that explored questions of mortality. With intimate access to Bowie's friends and artistic collaborators, and a wealth of rare archival material, Francis Whately's insightful film examines the celebrated artist's remarkably creative final years, through the production of both Blackstar and its predecessor, The Next Day, as well as his stage musical, Lazarus. FEATURING | David Bowie, Tony Visconti, Ivo Van Hove, Toni Basil, Earl Slick, Gail Ann Dorsey, Gerry Leonard, Carlos Alomar, Catherine Russel, Sterling Campbell, Zachary Alford, David Torn, Enda Walsh, Donny McCaslin, Maria Schneider, Robert Fox Francis has been making films with the BBC for the last twenty years. He has worked on a wide variety of acclaimed films including documentaries on Mark Rothko and Jackson Pollock; a fashion film with the supermodel Kate Moss; A film with HRH the Duke of Edinburgh, to celebrate his 90th birthday and a hard hitting current affairs film on the state of women's rights around the world, with Hillary Clinton, Madeleine Albright and Condoleezza Rice. Recently he made a tribute to British National treasure Dame Judi Dench, with Daniel Craig, Sir Ian McKellan and Piers Brosnan. His latest film is a feature length documentary entitled 'The Sidemen'. It discusses the role of some of the greatest unknown musicians who back stars like the Rolling Stones, Billy Joel, Prince, Otis Redding and David Bowie. It was released in July 2017.
Gerry Leonard is a Dublin born guitar player, songwriter and producer now based in upstate New York. As part of the New York scene Leonard’s distinctive ambient style has led to his working with many great artists over the years. A highlight was becoming music director / guitar player for David Bowie on his last year long “Reality” world tour and DVD (2003/2004). Apart from Bowie’s previous two records, “Heathen” (2001) and “Reality” (2003) and the subsequent tours, he is also featured on the penultimate David Bowie record titled “The Next Day” and had two co-writes with David on the album, “Boss of me” and “I’ll take you there”. “The Next Day” came out on March 12 2013. Gerry was honored to be part of the Brit Awards Tribute to David in Feb 2016.Leonard produced and helped co-write the last full album for Suzanne Vega. “Tales from the Realm of the Queen of Pentacles” came out in Feb 2014 and has been very well received garnering 4 star reviews from Q and Mojo music magazines. He has also produced and arranged the new album from Suzanne based around the life and works of the author Carson McCullers. This new 10 song album called “Lover Beloved” will be released in the fall of 2016. When not touring or recording with these international artists, Leonard heads up his own project, Spookyghost. Under the name Spookyghost, he has recorded two solo albums. The first recording simply called “Spookyghost” was primarily an ambient guitar record, made in his New York apartment in 1998. His second, “The Light Machine” (2002) has been described by David Bowie as “Quite the most beautiful and moving pieces of work I have possessed in a long time.” A third Spookyghost album is currently in the works.
